Nate Roth was determined to have the calm college experience advertised in all those slow-motion ads with the soothing Morgan Freeman voice and with his crazy overprotective parents back home, this could also be his only chance in life to get rid of that pesky virginity of his.
Nate meets Alex Matten, an unbelievably attractive senior who is particularly interested in Nate, his art and also, in his virginity. Alex makes him doubt his sexuality and when Nate meets Colt, a hot senior who teases and challenges him every chance he gets, his doubts are confirmed.
Colt offers to help Nate realize his gayness by getting him with Alex but there is the issue of Alex apparently having a boyfriend "of sorts" and Colt being an infuriating piece of work.
Between the "friends-his-parents-warned-him-about", addictive student get-aways and awakened desires, Nate has his work cut out for him.
I will admit that when I first got the book I thought it would be some silly teenage, comming of age romance filled with sappy dialogue and a Harlequin Romance type of plot. Boy was I wrong! This story had me in its grip from the beginning to the end. In fact I couldn't stop reading it until I got to the end and so I am writing this review at 3:30 in the morning. This is a romance story, but it is also about young people finding out their true selves with the help of new found college friends. You meet every social element of the social ladder and learn how they "tick" , so to speak. There is one shining star holding everything and everyone together, the very naive , extremely handsome Nate . He also adds most of the lighter moments of comedic elements. I suggest you set aside a weekend to sit down and thoroughly enjoy this delightful tale of friendship and developing love. Whether you are male or female, straight or gay, I assure you that you will find this a thoroughly delightful and entertaining read. My hat is off to the author, Cali Burem for developing such realistic and intriguing characters and placing them in this perfectly suitable plot situation.
I laughed through a good portion of this book. The characters were well rounded and easy to relate to. My biggest complaint is probably that I couldn't figure out where it was supposed to be taking place. Since there didn't appear to be snow or much cold during winter it ruled out Canada. Since only a few characters were British and it required a passport to go to their home not England, yet English slang and spellings were used throughout the book. I wasted a lot of energy trying to figure out where they were and flipping back to see if I missed something that said where. It was frustrating. I loved the story though.
