For daily spiritual reading during Lent I intend to draw nourishment from All Shall Be Well: Readings for Lent and Easter. A powerful collection of writings from poets, activists, and religious sisters and brothers, this volume includes voices who speak for peace, caring for the needy, and uplifting the weak. I do not want to give a litany of the authors, but the table of contents, with writers both classic (Howard Thurman) and contemporary (Mary Lou Kownacki), had me quite excited.

A diverse gathering of authors and meditations for the Lenten season. Thought-provoking and spiritually nourishing, a wonderful collection for those desiring more than a superficial devotional.

A good collection of daily readings for the Lent and Easter season. The one reading per day concept is very doable, most are not very long, though there are a few that are, such as one by Thomas Merton. As is not unexpected from the Maryknoll Press, many of the writers chosen are Catholic, though I didn't find that a drawback. The writers are from many different places and backgrounds so there are a variety of voices, and many ways of seeing the stories of Lent and Easter, which I found valuable. This is a wonderful resource. My favorite reading was by Jesuit James Martin who suggests a different sort of Lent than the usual "giving something up." Originally when people gave things up for Lent it was so that they would have more to give to the poor. We seem to have lost sight of that positive giving sort of Lent today, and focus only on our own sacrifices, our own personal sacrifices - far too often our own bad habits. Instead he proposes that we have a positive Lent, and do something, specifically that we bother. "Jesus does not condemn those who are weak and trying hard; but those who are strong and aren't trying at all." Martin says. "..For Jesus, sin is often a failure to bother to love."
