I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I guess I should have known (based on the cover art, which is not my favorite) that this book was going to be dark. It was much darker than I was prepared to encounter. That said, it was a real page turner and a nicely crafted storyline. It is fundamentally a book about good and evil, with supernatural and religious elements. I enjoyed reading it and I will definitely read Book 2, though I need a break from so MUCH evil so I will wait a few weeks before I go back to the story. Thank you to the author for the free, signed copy of the book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It started off a little slow but once it got going I couldn’t put it down. The end will leave you anxious to start book 2 for sure! Although it is fantasy, it is still real enough to give you the serious creeps!
This was my first ever book I have gotten in a Giveaway, and this book was breathtaking. Not only was I unable to put the book down, but the fact I could not figure out what was going to happen next was a thrill. The cover of this book and even the tittle of it really pushes the main idea out, which is the fact this story is not a happy go lucky fairy tale. This is harsh and brutal world the author has created with a small dash of fantasy. I truly love this book and has become one that's been burned into my mind.
I won this via a Goodreads giveaway which did not influence my review. I wasn’t sure what to rate it because this is one very odd book. I wasn’t sure I actually liked Collin. It gets off to a bit of a slow start. Collin is a rather lonely nineteen-year-old, mom’s gone, dad is both absent and cold when he is there so he’s mostly alone with his horse Ginger and his nanny Sylvana who is now no longer his nanny (he’s a bit too old). He has a friend, Patrick who had a rough start in life and has a girlfriend, Jill.
Dad works as a funeral director in theory but he’s not really part of the narrative but in the long run he is the center of the story. He is the evil spider in the center of the web.
Collin has been having odd dreams that might not be dreams. They spur him to start looking at the big complex that makes up his homestead and I don’t want to spoil anything, but it contains seriously weird stuff.
This is also has some serious religious subtext (okay several times it’s not even subtext, it’s in your face Christianity). It doesn’t get too overwhelming most of the time but the heart of this story is good vs evil and in theory, Collin is good. I honestly had a bit of trouble with several things Collin did, starting with how he handled Jill’s murder (not a spoiler, that’s in the blurb).
Without spoiling things, Collin does some really dubious stuff (in theory to protect himself but in most of the cases there were other options) things that would be against his religion. We don’t get into his head enough after these things. I wanted that. He accepts his higher calling and all the paranormal mysticism surrounding it but doesn’t really seem to think twice about anything he does (and that includes refurbishing coffins which is just weird).
I was very annoyed by the non-ending ending. I don’t have problems with sequels, but I want at least something wrapped up by the end. It practically ends in media res. The whole good vs evil thing and the various parties on either side were interesting and engaging and I’ll have to get the next one to figure out what’s going on because this whole book is build up for the next.

I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway and I am so happy to have found this author. I will definitely be reading the next book. This story is of Jacob/Colin as he discovers his true destination in life. It is quite the supernatural fantasy and one I highly recommend. I also appreciate that there really isn’t a lot of cursing in this book.
I won this book through GoodReads First Read program.
Platz tells a compelling tale with twists and turns. It is a battle between good and evil. God and Satan. The only disappointing part of the book was that it ended without ending. You will need to get book 2 to find out what happens.
Jacob Davis (or is it Collin Graves?) is the son of a mortician named Henry Davis (is that his real name?) and Jacob lives in a building in a Chicago cemetery. He gets a girlfriend Jill who is a news reporter and he has a best friend Patrick. Weird things begin to happen. Twists and turns happen throughout the tale. When Jill is killed Jacob learns that much of what he knew of his life is false. Plus those who he trusted are really evil.
This is a battle between good and evil, God and Satan. I enjoyed how Platz brought out scripture in his tale. Being the son of a mortician I also enjoyed the scenes which included embalming fluid, caskets and other things that reminded me of exploring my father's prep room and show room.
I am looking forward to book 2 and finding out how it ends.
This proves that Fantasy books are not for me at all. I was unable to get into this story. Terrible dialogue. Characters are even worse. I only purchased it because I received a signed copy of Book 2 for free and felt I needed to know the story from the beginning. Guess what? Bad idea. I am beyond sorry that I bought it. All I can think of is what possessed me to do that without at least starting Book 2 first. I've absolutely no interest in Book 2 now but I will try to read it. For me a two-star rating is really pushing it. I wish that I could delete the book.
I found it to very a little slow to start. However, by the time I finished, I couldn’t read fast enough. I read a lot of fantasy/vampire books. This one was like no other. I was gifted the book by the author/Goodreads (Thank you very much.) Being a giveaway, I wasn’t expecting very much. I was very happy to be proven wrong. I highly recommend this book.
Thank you to Goodreads and the author for the signed copy. Enjoyed the fast-moving romp through the worlds of light and dark. Only problem was the ending or should I say lack thereof. I was very disappointed not to have some resolution before having to purchase another book ! I guess I will never know what happens as I have way too many books to read to warrant me purchasing another.
Interesting story, a bit gory at times and confusing in the beginning. However, as I got 3/4 of the way, things became more clear. A good premise, characters need some work but not terrible. I would like to read book 2.
At first I was a little confused with the dreams but the more I read it, the more I loved it. I really like the characters - except for the vilians, of course. I finished the book while waiting at the hospital to be assigned a room a few weeks back. When I was done - I couldn't wait to get the 2nd book. Now I have purchased the 2nd book and I'm taking it to the hospital when I get admitted this coming Tuesday - already started it and it's good from the first page! Awesome story!.
Be prepared for a wild ride when reading this book. There are many twists and turns, numerous shall we say topics will be brought out by this book. Beware this book is not for those faint of heart and will deal with topics that go from life, death and beyond, are you up to the challenge?
As I read this book, I realized I had stepped into a world of terror and evil. I did enjoy the writing, creative drama and the fear that kept me on my toes while quickly turning each page to continue the story. I will read the 2nd book.
I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I was so surprised and I was thrilled at how quickly I got it in the mail. Thank you to the author, Leinad Platz, for sharing his creative story with us and for autographing my copy. This was such a fun book to read. It's so different from other supernatural books in its content. It's part thriller, part love story, part comedy but it's completely engaging. The characters are a lot of fun. This was such a unique story. I loved it and can't wait to find Book 2. I really need to know what happens next.
Thank you to netgally and Leinad Platz for this book to review. Full review coming soon.
Since I first entered to win this book, my getting the book, and reviewing the book the description has changed a bit, so what I thought I was getting was not quite what I was expecting when I entered.
This was not really my cup of tea. It's kinda quasi-religious but it can't decide on which one, christianity or a made-up one for the story. Also, you are a good halfway through the book before a bunch of the religious stuff gets dumped on you then it just kinda disappears again.

This is a book I won through Goodreads.com – it sounded interesting but reminded me of the program “Sir Graves Ghastly” that was on television years and years ago ----the beginning was a bit confusing but after a couple of chapters – it really took off and was a great read ---- has adventure, surprise, mystery, fantasy and maybe some science fiction in it – the young man is learning that not only was his girlfriend murdered, but his dad isn’t who he says is his and his life is a total lie! AND, I’m delighted that the author included the second book in the series because where this one ends is – it just plain stops and leaves you wondering! A truly intriguing read! I look forward to starting the next one!
While the first few chapters seem a little confusing, they are setting in place important information which is intriguing enough to suck you in and keep you interested until the story suddenly begins to move with the hastening speed of the downhill skier. At the bottom of the hill, the reader will want to repeat the act and reread the book for both satisfaction and to catch any little thing missed with the first read. It is easy to see that this book will become one of those that needs to be reread every so often for great pleasure and perhaps a little reassurance.
I would have given the book five stars, but I felt the ending was not in a natural spot. I just suddenly ends like the skier hit a tree just inches from the finish line. But I have already ordered book 2.
This was won in a goodreads giveaway....thank you to the author.
Not exactly sure what to rate this yet. Its a quick, intense read. A little bit of a slow start, but only about 30 or 40 pages were slow and then just sucked right in.
I'm not even sure what to classify this book as, there is mystery, thriller, supernatural, magic, romance, a little bit of everything...just kind of wow....now have to order book 2, wish I had it to start now.
A really great read...but if you are the least bit squeamish about certain things then you might want to pass it by, otherwise highly recommend.
What a great book! It's hard to describe the story without spoiling anything. Parts supernatural, thriller, and mystery wrapped into a great story. Honestly the cover art was a bit of a turnoff and I am a huge fan of books in this genre. Don't specifically know why but it just didn't appeal to me. Glad I didn't let that deter me from reading. Thankfully book 2 is out and available for kindle download so I don't have to wait to finish the story.
I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway.
The book started out like any other run of the mill Suspense/ Paranormal read. It quickly turned to being anything but. The writing style reminds me of Dan Brown meets James Patterson. He takes you to a twisted place and really makes you feel that you are right there in the action. The historical aspect he brings with the artifacts was brilliant. All in all this is one of the very best books i have read in an awful long time. i can not wait to read volume 2.
I was not sure what to expect when I received this book in a giveaway and I picked it up and did not want to put it down plus it was a fast-paced book and enjoyable. I thought it would be strictly a horror book due to the cover art being slightly creepy but it was more of a suspense thriller with supernatural elements. It is a battle of good and evil(which means it evolves religion) so if you enjoy those things you will also enjoy this story.
Jacob starts out as a simple worker at a furniture store... until the hot looking TV reporter walks in the door. Suddenly, Jacob's life starts getting weird.
This book is good - well written, and filled with action. I was a little upset that the ending seemed a little rushed, but overall the book was very good.
*I got this book through GoodRead's Giveaways - an excellent source of interesting books!
This is a cute, unique story. I recognized most of the quotes and there is also a word that was used, my kids and I have used for years but never heard anyone else say, "brinner!" I enjoyed this book more than I thought that I would.
I won this book in the goodreads giveaway because my daughter asked me to try. She looks forward to reading it now that I have finished, making sure that it wasn't too inappropriate.
I received this book for free from Goodreads Giveaways. This is a really great book. I am going to have to get the 2nd book to see how it ends. The main character finds out he was adopted after his girlfriend turns up mysteriously dead. Things have always been a bit freaky in his life but now everything is getting weird.
This story comes from a very twisted place, but really grabs you and pulls you in! I couldn't put it down and finished it in a matter of hours. Not for the timid! This story takes on many levels of depravity, offers alot of pain and blood, mixed with a smattering of romance. If you like reading something from way out in left field... this is the book for you!
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I think I expected something lighter, based on the playfulness of the title. Surprise! This is a dark and intricate story. It was well written and I developed feelings about the characters. The only things that bothered me were the info dumps that occurred in a few places. Probably necessary, but kind of detracted from the mood of the action.
I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. I learned about what was happening to Collin as he experienced it. I like the dialogue between Collin and Patrick. I found the lesson on God/Christmas/Santa (pages 206 - 208) strange. It doesn't fit in with the existing narrative style. I look forward to Book 2.
I received this book after winning it on Goodreads Giveaway. I read it and am giving it a honest review. It's an amazing book and full of many twists and turns. I was upset reading about Ginger, Collins beloved horse and of what Patrick had to endure. I highly recommend this book.
