POWELL IS BACK IN A HEART POUNDING STORY THAT WILL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS. The Americans aren’t happy with the changing political climate in Britain. Elements of the CIA and MI6 enter into a conspiracy to help shape the thinking of the British public. Meanwhile ISIS has a plan to bring terror to the streets of Britain. Powell is caught in the middle when he offers help to a former lover, whose life is in danger. Soon it becomes evident, someone will stop at nothing to see them both silenced. Unsure who can be trusted, Powell must act to save the lives of his friends and right a terrible wrong.
Bill’s love of reading commenced at a very young age. He credits his Gran for encouraging his interest by regularly taking him to the local library after primary school. At boarding school, when the lights went out in his dormitory, he was often encouraged by the other boys to tell stories. English Literature was always his favourite school subject. A long and successful career in IT saw him live and travel all over the world. With hindsight it was the start of his writing fiction but they were called business proposals in those days! Having always enjoyed different cultures, the one life lesson Bill has learned is “wherever you go you will find good and bad people. This is not determined by colour, race, religion or country.” Bill has finally fulfilled his lifelong ambition to become an author and has now written nine thrillers including seven in the best selling Powell series. Bill lives near Nottingham, UK with his German wife and has seven daughters, a son, a stepson, three horses, a dog, two cats and two rabbites! When he’s not writing he’s probably watching his football team West Brom, who he has now been supporting for over fifty years!
And so onto the 3rd book in the series, which can be read as a standalone. This time the trouble comes to Powell’s bar in Brighton with a request to help an old friend who he met in Saudi Arabia called Lara.
I found Deception to be far better than the two previous books in the series. Bill continues with the same characters from book 2 and there is more gritty sex to enjoy! Deception weaves conspiracy and terrorism into the story which has a very good plot. This book is very much in the mould of the popular BBC television series Spooks.
I liked the questions Bill asked through his novel about the war on terror and how to deal with ISIS. These questions were thought provoking outside the plot of this novel and the many what-ifs make you wonder how far governments will go outside their borders. This book was written before the real-life chemical attack in Salisbury of Sergei and Yulia Skripal on the 4th March 2018. So Bill clearly had his finger on the pulse with exactly what can happen in the UK.
Deception captured my imagination and I found it thought provoking because of the problems caused by misinformation and the value of intelligence gathered under interrogation.
I liked how all the characters had to cope with misdirection and how the reader has to shift through all this data to see the wood for the trees. This unravelling of truths and plausible lies made for Deception to be an enjoyable and entertaining read. This makes Deception an OUTSTANDING 5 star read and shows that Bill has returned to the form he revealed when he published both Revenge and Encryption.
Deception (Powell Book 3) by Bill Ward is a brisk, straight-to-the-point international conspiracy thriller that held my attention from beginning to end. The author develops the plot well, brings it to a satisfying conclusion, and mostly avoids the cliches of the genre. The writing style is very bare bones. While the wording and short chapters lack much in the way of descriptive detail, they make for an easy read and a lightning quick pace. There's very little character development, which limits emotional investment in the story, but readers who love plot-driven thrillers will find much to enjoy.
Recommend to fans of fast paced thrillers especially those based around topical issues. This is the third outing for Powell. My enjoyment of the book was enhanced by reading the previous two books in the series which introduced all of the main characters but could be read as a stand alone. Via an agent he'd worked with previously Powell is caught up in an ISIS bombing campaign in the UK and the dubious methods of the government to combat terrorism. After a raunchy start the action and intrigue take over. Ward is first and foremost a wonderful story teller. The story is fast paced with plenty of twists and held my interest throughout. With clearly defined characters and logical flow to the story Ward's books have good readability and are always a pleasure to read.
Fast paced thriller. Ward knows how to create real suspense and how to keep a story moving along. Anymore, there seem to be a lot of terrorist novels that just rehash the same tired old plots. This novel, on the other hand, is fresh and original and the plot twists will keep you guessing.
Deception (Powell Book 3) by Bill Ward starts out chillingly with a terrorist Fawwaz Al-Hashimi out to revenge the deaths of his mother and sister, and the destruction of his homeland. He, the best bomb maker, for a group of terrorists, is on a mission. Too important to be destroyed in a bomb vest himself, he’s designing a bomb that will take out thousands in London, one of the two places where his enemies live, the ones who bombed his country. He’s set on his mission and nothing will deter, not a woman or marriage or hope for a future outside of the destruction of England or the U.S. And so the story begins with the Koran-reading Fawwaz and I’m hooked, which is no surprise thanks to the thrilling writing of Ward, whose prior books I engulfed with relish. (* see post note) This the third of the Powell series moves along at a rapid clip with no let up as the reader discovers Powell gets caught up in the bombing campaign against Britain. The intrigue doesn’t let up as he, along with another agent he’s worked with in the past, take on ISIS. Power and his ex, get caught in the crossfire of revenge and become targets. How does this play out? Who will betray them? The page turning thriller will leave you guessing right to the end. And when that last page is shut you’ll want more great storytelling from the very talented Bill Ward. *(Post note: his prior two Powell series books are stand alone reads with satisfying endings as is the case with this one)
“Deception” - book 3 in the ‘Powell’ series - is another wonderful gem of a thriller that I devoured in just a couple of evenings. What I love about Bill Ward’s books is the smooth transition of the plot from one to another and the fact that at the same time each installment can be read as a standalone. After his return from Saudi Arabia to England, Powell once again finds himself in the thick of it. When terrorists strike with more boldness in the heart of his homeland, an old acquaintance appears in his bar asking him for his help as representatives of a foreign government are following her about the sensitive information she possesses. Soon, after the irreparable occurs, Powell realizes that the enemy he’s facing might not be an international terrorist organization but someone much closer to home, and someone much more powerful… Like the previous books in the series, this third installment was fast-paced and pulled me right in with its delightful mixture of intrigue, conspiracy and thrilling action scenes. I enjoyed getting to know new characters and was also happy to “reunite” with the old ones, which I feel like I’ve known forever, and that speaks a lot about the author’s ability to make a reader invest in their characters. Absolutely loved it, and I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series. Highly recommended!
I made the mistake of picking this book up and not realising that it was the third in the series. However, the characters and back story are sufficient enough that it's an enjoyable read, that wets the appetite for the previous two stories in the series. Powell, former Mi5 operative now enjoys life owning and running a bar. He has numerous contacts from this days in the service and when one comes to him needing help in fear of her life, he jumps at the challenge to help. The story surrounds terrorist plots in the UK and from the first page you are pulled into a fast paced, suspenseful story that will have you turning page after page desperate to find out if you're connecting the right dots. Dealing with a conspiracy at the highest level, I found myself lost in the pages and very much enjoying the story. Ward has a way with characters, making them 3D in character with enough information to keep you interesting. Well written, highly engaging and a very enjoyable read!
Really fast paced and excellent. Once it got started it just didn't stop, and it was a great follow-up to the other books in the series by Bill Ward. Deception is the third installment for our hero, Powell, as he focuses on bringing down injustice in the world and helping people in need overcome their oppressors.
It is incredibly relevant, with ISIS being a part of the story and dealing with bombing threats. There is a lot of tension and intrigue in the story and I found myself glued to my chair until I had finished it. Bill Ward does an amazing job of keeping the story in line with modern day events and adding a lot of twists and turns to keep the story fun.
I recommend this series for anyone who likes fast-paced thrillers. You won't regret it!
Deception is the story of duplicity on the part of some members of the British government intent on getting the public behind them in the war – and nobody can deny it is a war – against Islamic terrorists. The question is, how far can you go before you descend to their level of disregard for human life? Is extreme torture ever justified? Mr Ward has the uncanny habit of writing fast-paced thrillers that leave you wondering if they could possibly have an element of truth. Whatever, this is an author on his best form, featuring characters that live in briefly but vividly described settings that don’t slow the action, or allow the reader more than frequent, wildly inaccurate, guesses as to what might happen next.
Having read the first two volumes in the series I was eager to get my hands on the next story. Bill Ward writes cutting edge thrillers about human tragedy and this one was no exception. A passionate and compelling thriller about terrorism that is chilling, haunting and difficult to put down. It starts with an explicit sex scene that is part of information trading in the world of spies and agents. When agent Lara is being followed she gets agent Powell in Brighon/ Hove involved to help her. Ward's characters are all flesh and blood, and given the current crisis in Syria and the terror plot in Paris, this is all the more powerful.
The third book in this fantastic series, and it will not let you down. The reality of terrorism in today's society with Isis threats is prevalent in this storyline, but the author takes it one step further with government conspiracy and underhanded tactics leaving a lot of innuendo around the threat of terrorism and what leaders will do to push their cause forward.
Powell is a great character and I really hope to see more of him - especially with the tension between himself and Affina as the underlying story throughout the three books!
I was completely mesmerised and it left me wanting more! Great work by this author!
What a journey Bill Ward has taken me on. The first in the series, Trafficking was a five star rating from me as was the second in the series, Abduction. The books are standalones but to see a writer improve with each book it's a must you read them all.
Deception is the most powerful and hard hitting of the series. Writing, organisation and plot have more depth. Ward's writing has gone from strength to strength and it's been a delight to follow the main character, Powell throughout all three stories.
Well done Bill Ward, I will be reading more from you.
Powell is back again for another thrilling race to save mankind, which is not exactly how he pictured retirement. When a friend shows up needing help, Powell is dragged back into the world of espionage and black sites. His country is trying to prevent terrorism, but there are some who don't feel that enough funding is being spent on prevention. When his friend is discovered near a suicide bomber, Powell is in the race of his life to stop evil from winning. An intense thriller with complex twists and turns.
After having read the first two of the Powell books I had no hesitation in reading this third instalment, and I wasn’t disappointed.
The writing is as strong as ever and the story holds your attention from the very first page. Powell’s life is thrown into chaos when an old lover comes to him for help, little does he realise just how dangerous things are going to become.
The threat of terrorism is growing steadily but the culprits might not always be as obvious as suspected.
This is a brilliant read and I am already looking forward to what dangers Powell finds himself in next.
This is the third book I've read in the Powell series by Bill Ward and I've loved all of them. A thrill on every page, this fast moving story of terrorists, CIA, MI6 plus Powell and friends, will keep you turning the pages to the end. Powell is like a loveable cross between James Bond and The Sweeney. The story itself is topical and current to world politics, which makes it feel even more real. I loved every minute of it.
terrorist plots, government conspiracy both home and away and powell at the heart of this incredible, fast paced book.
bill ward has once again out-done himself and left me speechless! impossible to put down, I read the entire book In an afternoon and my only regret was that it had to end.
Another great read. This was an in-site into Powell's former life. This book is a stand alone read but if you get the chance read the previous Bill ward books as they do follow a pattern. Another thrilling read.
The author has come up with yet another spell bounding thriller that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat and your heart in your mouth as the gripping events unfold.
It starts with a fanatical terrorist Al-Hasimi roaming the streets of London intent on wreaking revenge on behalf of ISIS for the deaths of his family. Unaware of the danger lurking, Powell is relaxed, enjoying life looking after a bar in Brighton when he is contacted by a former lover in fear of her life. When he hears her story, he calls on his old friends from the security service and concerned at her plight jumps at the challenge to help.
What follows is a conspiracy at the very heart of government to stir up public opinion against Islamic terrorists, setting one security group against another. The ensuing storyline is full of twists and turns in a dramatic series of thrilling action scenes that build up to a dizzying conclusion, leaving you gasping for air.
As in all Bill Ward’s thrillers there is no time to draw a breath. All you can do is hang on there until it is all resolved at the finish. You will not be disappointed.
This has been a n awakening for me as I do know things go on but even though its a fictional book & storylines it's not hard to see a lot of it is truthful.I cried at parts throughout the 3 books ,I also enjoyed reading about the friendships & how people deal with all sorts of things ,there will always be crime & corruption & hopefully there will be many like Powell to stand up against the evil& corrupt people no matter how far up they are .Bill Ward definitely knows how it works & he also keeps it real & as the story unfold's I can't help not being able to put the book down .⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I love action novels—the fast pace, the car chases, the fist fights, the shoot-outs, the mystery, the intrigue. This novel promised all that and more, and I have to say, after reading it, I wasn’t disappointed. I sat down with it and read it through in one sitting, cover to cover.
This novel is the third in the Powell series, but I haven’t read the first two books (yet—now that I realize what I missed, I’m going to). Despite having missed some of Powell’s earlier adventures, I was able to follow the action without difficulty. You do not have to read the earlier works of the series to read this novel. But you probably will want to after reading this one. Any potential ambiguity is explained in a timely and expeditious manner without bogging down the plot. And the plot moves fast. There is action on every page. Every paragraph. The book moves at breakneck speed, almost to the point that character development is stifled. Almost. You learn enough about them without pages of introspection to develop a fondness for them. But maybe, just maybe, a little more internalization would have been nice. Just enough that we could breathe a bit now and then. Like I said, the book moves fast.
This novel covers the painful and uncomfortable subject of terrorist attacks on Western soil. What makes it really disquieting is the way certain factions involved handle the situation. The prospect is frightening and all too believable. The end of the novel is resolved satisfactorily, but the reader will have plenty to think about long after the book is put away. This is a novel readers won’t soon forget.
Deception is a fast-paced thriller about terrorism in England and political reactions. Although it is not normally my preferred genre and I try to shy away from terrorism in novels (I see too much of this heart-breaking violence on the news channels), I really enjoyed this well-written story. This is the third book in a series, but it did not impede my engagement in the action.
Powell, the main character, is a retired MI6 operative who now owns a bar, but he still keeps ties and friendships with his formers contacts. When his ex-lover, Lara, finds her life in danger, she seeks Powell’s help. Being the stand-up guy he is when he sees an injustice, he agrees to assist but quickly finds out it is much more deadly than he bargained for not only to himself, but his friends as well. The story is told from different points of view. Being in the mind of a bomb-making terrorist is horrifying. The cold and calculating actions of the men pursuing Lara and Powell keep your heart thumping and will keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I would have preferred to know more about the main characters and their motivations. Not having read the previous books, I felt the characters could have been more developed so I would have been more invested in them outcome. I still enjoyed this page-turner and its descriptive look in to the world of fighting terrorism. I recommend this suspenseful, heart-pounding read.
A WELL TESTED FORMULAE A good old fashioned British detective story set in the south of England. I enjoyed the read, and I know this as I was reluctant to put the book down and do much else until I had finished it. One point though, the characters spend a lot of time drinking, which I most certainly would not have done if I knew there was a contract out on me. I would have preferred to keep a completely clear head.
Bill Ward Book 3 Deception This book is the 3rd in the Powell series, and it is a fantastic addition to the series. From the start to the end this book is full of action. Powell gets involved in all sorts of action including kidnapping and murder. I highly recommend this book. 5* 06 December 2015.
This story was moving, exciting, entertaining and interesting!!!. I would definitely want Powell on my team☺️. Bill is a fantastic storyteller and is a PHENOMENAL writer🤗.
Loved this real page turner. Kept you on the edge of your seat on what could possibly happen next.. No need the thevulga explanation of sex that happens I. The story, though kinda.spoilt it in part's
I do like a good thriller, and Deception by Bill Ward, fits the bill (no pun intended). Read on to see what I thought about the book!
Synopsis (from the author): The Americans aren’t happy with the changing political climate in Britain.
What I liked: The book started with a bang and didn’t let up until the end. The idea that government agencies would work to influence the public’s opinion in a nefarious way harkens back to any number of scandals, and makes it believable. Powell and the other characters were believable, too. With plenty of action, good characters, and an entertaining storyline, Deception was a good read!
What I didn’t like: I had a little trouble with the idea that the Americans could run such a complex operation in Britain, but once I accepted it, the story worked. I thought the demise of Lara was too predictable, as well.
Overall impression: Deception by Bill Ward was an entertaining read. Good action, good characters, and a believable plot makes this a book to add to your TBR list! My only regret is that I picked up the third book in the series…now I have to read the first two!
