Rate this book
Marguerite's atrocious, old and fat, enormously wealthy husband William Alexander is dead. When she goes back to live in her own house off Piccadilly in London she becomes a victim of her manipulative brother Stephen, who manages to marry her off to his heavily indebted lover Lord Philip Agnew, Viscount Morvern, after he has convinced Marguerite that her childhood admirer Hengist Agnew, brother of Philip, has married during the battles in the Peninsular Wars. Hengist comes 'home' on the night of his brother's and Marguerite's wedding and due to a mistake he is brought to Marguerite's bed. Because he knows that his brother will never touch her, he spends the night with her, setting situations in motion that are hard for him to control.

You can leave it to C. Hampton Jones to write a controversial Regency Romance novel about her theme of forced marriages in the beginning of the 19th century. This time it is Marguerite, who is widowed of her horrible fat husband William Alexander who has an unexpected fortune thrown in her lap, which attracts the vultures of her times: the penniless rakes. The bad thing is that the penniless rake who wins her hand through the manipulations of her half-brother Stevie is the homosexual Viscount Philip Morvern, heir to a destitute earldom and the brother of the secret love of her heart: Major Hengist Agnew. When Hengist comes home on leave from the war in the Peninsula (1810) he finds Marguerite married to his gay brother, who definitely will not perform his duties in the marital bed. So, Hengist starts a campaign, deceiving everybody around him… also the deceivers who tried to steal Marguerite’s fortune from her.

Yes, an amazing book. I can't wait to read the sequel: Death's Sting which sounds Shakespearean.
This book is treating the taboo on homosexuality in 1810 and is based according to the author on hangings of homosexuals in London in 1809, as C. Hampton Jones describes in the beginning of the book. (It was called the Vere Street hangings.) C. even uses the premises in her book.
The nice part is that the heroine in the book marries the homosexual brother of her childhood sweetheart Hengist. Hengist is yummy, Scottish and wears Highlander gear, as was fashion in books in about 2008. Never mind that, he is an old girl's DREAM. C. is known for her twists and turns in her book, and boyo this one is not different! Read and enjoy!
