Tim Ouellette is a horror writer living in Maine and is the author of several works of fiction including FRACTURED, HOLLOW MEN, MIRROR IMAGE and I DARE YOU.
Tim is also the author of several non-fiction titles including his philosophy series A STUDY IN EXTREMES: THE PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOLOGY OF HITLER AND NEITZSCHE.
This was a book with many stories in it. I enjoyed many of them. This book was a little different than what I normally read. I don't read too many books that have multiple shorts stories in them but this book had some good scary stories and I enjoyed the chance to try something new. * I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
Good solid ideas at work here, but in dire need of proofreading from page one. Stephen King influence is apparent but the stories lack a strong narrative voice of their own. Some clumsy and cluttered prose gets in the way of what could otherwise be very taut and enjoyable stories.
Looking forward to a more refined offering from this author, but unfortunately this collection in particular is lacking some much-needed polish.
Fractured is a collection of shorts by Tim Ouellette and he gives us a set of smart fun stories. The opening story is short but very sweet, a man just wants some sleep but his dead wife won’t cooperate. I am a big fan of flash fiction and I love that fewer words are sometimes so much more. The Hunted is a story about just that, a man makes sport of hunting people but while he enjoys his hunt little does he realize he too is being hunted. Tim gives us short horror at its best with this twist of fate as the tension is quickly created and the story is just as quickly devoured. Stories like Insatiable like the title of this book leave you feeling just that, fractured. It makes you feel as though you just woke up from a strange dream and can only remember bits and pieces, leaving you disturbed in some way without knowing exactly why. The stories continue to read as partial glimpses into dreams of madness, killswitch and demontia fit this well as a boy hears voices that he can’t shut out and a father who returns home to find he hasn’t escaped the madness he thought was only in his mind. Tim Ouellette’s stories fill you with unease leaving a tight spot in your chest, and your head feeling a bit fuzzy.
Containing stories about heartache and terror, and poems about death, Fractured by Tim Ouellette is a collection of horror fiction from a new face to the genre. This is a short read, with five stories and three poems, including an excerpt from his debut novel, Fallen.
The opening story, Sleep, is one of the standout stories in this collection. The longest one in the book, Through a Glass, Darkly, allows the characters room to breathe, and gives this tale a greater sense of heartache and sorrow. The poems are well written, with vivid prose.
Every story deals with family horror: a husband visited by his dead wife, the death of children, of a man’s sister. I found myself wanting this volume to be longer, with more stories and more variation, but on the whole it’s a good book that will appeal to most fans of dark fiction.
Tim Oullette offers us a variety of dark short stories and poems in 'Fractured'. I enjoyed the collection and finished it in one sitting. My favorite was the short story, Through A Glass, Darkly. The vivid descriptions kept the story moving and I read back over the story a second time.
I recommend 'Fractured' if you're looking for a solid read full of dark themes. I look forward to the full length novel Oullette has planned. We get a sneak peek of 'Fallen' at the end of this book.
