Conar is trapped in the maze, where he is cruelly tortured by the guards. He is about to lose all his self-esteem and identity. Brelan is sent on a mission to free comrades from the maze. He pretends to be an overseer. Only when he is there, he discovers that Conar is still alive. In order to keep his disguise, he must participate in the torments, but at the same time tries to prevent the worst. At some point everyone succeeds in escaping to Chrystallis. There, Conar is slowly healed and his training begins. He learns all sorts of fighting techniques, Asian martial arts at Ching Ching, craftsmanship, horseback riding, etc., all from the best masters in their respective fields. In the end he is made into a 'Darkwind' in a ceremony. He asked his god Alel to free him from his love for Liza. The new Conar is now called 'Raven' and is an emotionless fellow who seeks revenge.
