Marnie Whitlock has never known what it’s like to be normal. She and her family moved from place to place, hiding from reporters and psychologists, all because of her gift. A curse was more like it. Seeing a victim, feeling his pain as the last of his life ebbed away, and being helpless to save him. It was torture. And then one day it disappeared and she was free. Until those who hunted her for her gift tried to kill her. And then the gift came back with a vengeance.
Beckett Hamilton leads a simple life. His ranch is profitable and a legacy he’ll be proud to pass onto his children one day, work fills his time from sunup to sundown, and his romances are short and sweet. He wouldn’t have it any other way. And then he runs into quiet and reserved Marnie Whitlock just after she moves to town. She intrigues him like no woman ever has. And she’s hiding something. His hope is that she begins to trust him before it’s too late.
Liliana Hart spent five years teaching music in the public education system. She molded America’s youth, busted kids for smoking pot in the restrooms, and broke up illicit affairs behind the stage on a regular basis. (Liliana’s Addison Holmes Mystery Series, about a small town teacher who gets into a whole lot of trouble, is somewhat autobiographical, but she won’t confess to which parts).
Liliana began reading romance novels with all her new found free time, and when she ran out of things to read, she decided to write her own novels. The result was a 150,000 word thriller—a dazzling adventure—where the heroine was a thirty-year-old virgin assassin (Yes, you read that right). She couldn’t imagine why people weren’t knocking down her door to read it, but she persevered and began writing a second book. She finally got the hang of things, and eventually learned that losing one’s virginity wasn’t all that romantic after all. All of her books involve some kind of suspense (she just can't help herself), laughter, and a lot of steamy sex.
Since the failure of her first attempt, Liliana’s books have won awards such as: The Daphne Du Maurier, The Suzannah, The Linda Howard Award of Excellence, The Maggie, and many others. Her affiliations include Romance Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America.
Liliana loves to cook, and is addicted to reading, Internet Boggle, kickboxing, and Bones. She lives in a big, rambling house in Texas with a couple of cats to keep her company. She loves to get emails from readers.
Although I have purchased books in this series that are waiting on my Kindle for me to work my way to them on my never ending TBR, this is the first MacKenzie family book that I have gotten to read and I am so glad I started here. Trouble Maker is a great introduction to the Mackenzies and their extended family but doesn't spoil any of the previous stories.
Marnie was best friends with Darcy MacKenzie as a child, but a violent incident culminating in a tragic outcome took her away from Surrender as a teenager. Before that day, Beckett Hamilton captured her attention in a way no other boy had, and to her shock he accepted her gift without fear or judgment. It wasn't the right time for them then but as Marnie knows, the future isn't written in stone.
Fifteen years later, Beckett is running his family ranch and enjoying Montana life. The single women of the area hope to snag the handsome and wealthy rancher but he has no time or interest for anything permanent - until he finds out Marnie is back in town. He has never forgotten her and still feels as though he failed her all those years ago. He certainly doesn't intend to let her slip away from him a second time and wastes no time letting her know that.
Marnie needed time away from the small town to find her own way, but after escaping from a claustrophobic relationship, she sees it is time to return to Surrender. Her first encounter with Beckett upon her return takes her breath away but she resists him for as long as possible. He is a patient guy with a romantic streak though, and after a gentle nudge from the MacKenzie matriarch, Marnie finally gives in to what they both want. Unfortunately her past doesn’t go away as easily as she'd hoped and it threatens her future.
Fans of the series will enjoy the familiar faces and I loved the glimpse of family members in their younger days. Insight into Shane MacKenzie's future is provided, and there is plenty of drama - and deliciously hot moments - to go around! Now I need to go bump those other books up my to-read list because I am hooked!

New to me author.
This is the first book for me by Author Liliana Hart and I will simply say. Wow what an intense story.
This story starts out pretty sad as a young girl Marnie is severely abused by one of her parents. She is good friends though with a bunch of ranchers’ kids and best friends with Darcy Mackenzie. Marnie daydreams about Beckett Hamilton but that is all It is or is it? Darcy make sure that Marnie knows that no matter what her horrible father told her being with a guy is a normal and natural thing it doesn't make you a horrible person. Marnie also has visions and it scares her to no end. When her father confronts her and Beckett it all comes out. Beckett wants Marnie but when he finds out what has been happening to her he is beyond livid. Can he protect her? Can Marnie break free of her dad? Or will the fates separate any hopes of a future for them?
This book is a bunch of good-hearted young people just living life to its fullest and learning new things and strange things about themselves. Very enjoyable reading but also very heartbreaking. Thomas and Riley were hilarious. I truly need to read more work by this author.
I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review. Liliana Hart
I thought I had read all of Liliana Hart's MacKenzie series, but found this book hiding in my Kindle's TBR list. What a great story! Although not exactly MacKenzie 's, both Marnie and Beckett are friends of theirs. A really great story.
TROUBLE MAKER packs quite a punch and is both heartbreaking and heartwarming, but it's also a good way to touch base with all the MacKenzies.
Marnie Whitlock's gift has been more of a curse than a blessing all her life and leaving Surrender was the only way to escape the memories of a less than ideal home, an abusive father determined to beat the curse out of her and mother who did nothing to stop the abuse. But Marnie only exchanged one prison for another and is now determined to take charge of her life and her future. The first step to taking charge of her life is returning home to Surrender.
It's been fifteen years since Beckett Hamilton saw Marnie but she's had his heart all this time. His biggest regret is his inability to save her from her abusive father but her return is the perfect opportunity to see if the fledging feelings between them survived the time apart and Beckett will not give up until Marnie is his nor will he stand by while another man tries to hurt her again.
I think this is the most emotional story of this series so far and I loved Marnie and Beckett. My heart broke for Marnie and how she grew up, but she was a survivor and fighter with a core of steel who retained her sweetness through all the hardships of life. Beckett was a charming and adorable cowboy from the first and I loved that he did not give up on Marnie.
I have enjoyed every book in this series and look forward to more, especially Shane's story.
What a great addition to the Mackenzie series that introduces more fabulous characters from Surrender Montana, I really enjoyed it they steam between Marnie and Beckett was just awesome I also loved how Marnie has always been considered a Mackenzie not just by Mary and James but by all of the Mackenzies they really do take care of their own.
Yes Liliana Hart has done it again with The Mackenzie Saga. This time we're seeing how abused teenage psychic Marnie & her crush Beckett Hamilton, the neighbouring farm to the Mackenzie's land. Who he himself really likes her, but things goes down for them even her abusive father see's them & that was the turning point. AND they're separated before things can start. So we jump 7-10yrs later & Beckett's taken over the running of the farm & Marnie is a well renowned photographer & who helps the police with her psychic abilities & she knows she NEEDS to go BACK to Surrender. But what a lovely read where he'll wait & WON'T GIVE UP on the LOVE of His life 😘😘😘
When I read the introduction I was a bit reluctant mind games etc. I should have never doubted Lilianna Hart words..loved the book. I now have 12 books of her’s that are my #1 favorite.
Marnie is a fighter. Had to overcome the worst. Beckett is a wonderful man that helps her put her life together. I love how all these characters are intertwined with the Mackenzie’s
I have not had the chance to read all of the books in the Mackenzie Family series by Liliana Hart (My last review was of the 1,001 Dark Nights release Promise of Surrender), but the more I read the more I love.
TROUBLE MAKER opens up with the very tragic history of Marnie. Her story really tugs at your heart so keep the tissues on hand. She’s a woman that was abused by her father from a young age due to his disapproval of her psychic ability, though if it hadn’t been that, he’d have found another reason because he is just that vile of a character. Marnie is able to escape Surrender, Montana just as young love is starting to bloom with the hero, Beckett. She returns fifteen years later, safe from her father but carrying baggage from another abusive relationship. She is determined to make an independent life for herself so she initially holds off on a relationship with Beckett even though, through her visions, she already knows that they will end up together.
This book is a quick read with no lagging parts. The romance is hot and the plotline is intriguing from beginning to end. All of the characters are well developed, especially Marnie. I love how strong she was despite everything that she had been through. It’s impossible to not have an emotional connection to her. Beckett makes a wonderful sweet hero. He’s very patient with waiting for Marnie. In the beginning, I thought he came off as a player. It wasn’t very clear at first the reasons for him breaking up with Hazel so it almost seemed as though he was playing the jerk guy “I don’t like her anymore so she’s ‘crazy'” card. It became clearer what happened in that situation after a couple of chapters.
There are quite a few “easter eggs” that reference the novellas in the Mackenzie Family collection. The one that stood out most to me was a phone call that Cooper Mackenzie receives and Marnie gets the psychic impression of “Delta”. (The novella I’m reviewing is Delta: Rescue by Christin Harber.) There are also lots of references to Shane Mackenzie, the brother that lost his leg in the ambush at the compound, and it’s clear that his story is coming very soon.
My only dislike about this book is that Chapter 11 shifts to a love scene between Cooper and Claire (from COOPER (January 2, 2014)). Don’t get me wrong, it was a good scene. It was just completely out of place and it takes you too far away from the main story when all of the conflicts are starting to come together.
I totally recommend this book to everyone and suggest you also check out the some of the other works in the Mackenzie Family Series. While the author does a good job of showing enough background so you are not lost in the story, reading the other books will enhance the experience for this and all future Mackenzie books.
TROUBLE MAKER offers up a short and sweet story about first loves and never giving up on what you know is meant to be.
Marnie Whitlock knew she was different from the time she was little. Plagued with visions she accepts but has no explanations for, Marnie only hopes to survive the abuse from her father until she can leave Surrender, Montana and be free when her 18th birthday hits. But it turns out she became free before that.
Beckett Hamilton always regretted not telling Marnie exactly how he felt when they were young, and when social services took her away before he could even say goodbye, he was devastated. But now she's back in Surrender and he's determined to make the beautiful and successful woman his…forever.
TROUBLE MAKER is the first offering in a spinoff series based on Ms. Hart's wildly successful The MacKenzie Family series. While this would be listed as book 11.5 in The MacKenzie Family series, it's also the beginning of several MacKenzie Family novellas featuring the gregarious family but written by various authors. This is a good introduction to the family, though it focuses on family friend Beckett and their childhood friend Marnie.
While Beckett and Marnie had some decent chemistry, there were actually very few scenes of them together until about 3/4 of the way through the book! In fact, out of three sex scenes, one of those was a nice little D/s romp between a MacKenzie brother and his wife. Which I found rather odd. Even so, I liked the tempo of TROUBLE MAKER and the paranormal element of Marnie's gift was an intriguing twist. The writing was impeccable and intriguing enough for me to be looking forward to more novellas in this series.
Bottom Line: For a MacKenzie newbie, it's a good introduction to Ms. Hart's wildly popular family. I'm excited to backtrack and pick up a few books featuring some of the characters mentioned and also to see what debauchery other authors offer up for the family. - See more at: http://www.theromancereviews.com/view...
This story is as heart-breaking as it is heart-warming. I love a second chance romance, it's like rooting for the underdog. This is my first book in the Mackenzie Family series and in some ways, I think it was a cool way to start it. The characters in the present have all found their happy ending, but I didn't feel like it really spoiled their stories. It wasn't like I didn't know they would all end with an HEA. lol. However, what I thought was interesting about beginning with this book was that I got to see into the pasts of these Mackenzie folk. Become a little more acquainted with their personalities as teenagers and the circumstances that shaped who they became as adults. There were some moments when I got a little confused about who was who, but overall I kept up. Marnie and Beckett definitely have a unique story. Marnie's childhood was gut-wrenching. Meeting Beckett seemed to be the only ray of sunshine in her otherwise dark life. When things come to a head, he isn't reason enough for her to stay. But, I had to room to judge her (even if I did a little...) as much as I would have loved for her and Beckett to get their HEA right then, however they weren't really ready for it and they both needed that time to get into a better place in their lives. There are some funny moments, extremely yummy, hot scenes, melt your heart moments, and rip your heart right out moments of the book. I am not a huge fan of angst and it was a little heavy for me, but that is really a preference thing. So, if dig angst, you'll love that aspect of the book. I would have enjoyed a little more sweet, wooing scenes as Ben attempts to convince Marnie to take another chance on him. The novel is relatively short, and I was a little torn with wanting more time for things to play out, making it seem a tad more realistic, and just wanting these two to get their HEA. They deserve it. All in all, I'd recommend it, and I think it will be fun to go back and read the rest of the series.
Marnie Whitlock has the ability to see into people’s minds, and into the future. It’s not something most people can handle, but Marnie has always found refuge and acceptance among the McKenzie family. After being sent away from Surrender and spending time building a successful photography career Marnie is back. She’s determined to make it on her own. She’ll never let anyone take advantage of her again and she’ll guard her battered heart so she can heal. Even from Beckett Hamilton, the boy who’d captured her heart when she was a young girl. But when her past catches up with her she’ll need the backing of the McKenzie’s might, and she’ll have to decide whether to embrace the future she envisioned with Beckett. I liked the concept of this story. The heroine with special abilities and the hero who accepts her and wants to protect her. It was interesting and grabbed me, but I felt like their story was a little rushed. The McKenzie family feature heavily, which was great because they’d been a big part of Marnie’s childhood and considered her an honorary member, but we got a little side tracked in the middle with Cooper and Claire’s story. The reader gets the feeling that something is coming, though and this keeps us hanging for Marnie and Beckett’s happy ever after. I have to say, I really liked this couple. Someone like Marnie needs someone special who’ll take her as she comes without freaking out. And a man who’ll put ignorant, intolerant people in their place. The McKenzie family world is still a great place to escape. 4 flares. *ARC generously provided in exchange for an honest review. * Cheers
I have been following all the Mackenzie novels by Liliana since two years ago that's why I was very happy to receive an ARC of this.
It's been a while since the last Mackenzie book. And though technically this novel is not about a Mackenzie, it feels like coming home to Montana along with Marnie. I haven't read the Addison and Whiskey series so I'm not sure if it's been done there but I think this is also the first time I've read a book by Liliana that have a 'special talent' involved. And I can say that it was done very well and woven into the story very smoothly.
What I like about this novel is the fact that the main characters are not stranger to each other. They have a past that they have to work with which made their story even more interesting. I know I have said it often enough, but as someone who is not a fan of whirlwind romance, I really like how the plot of this story was established.
The suspense portion of Liliana's novels is one of the things I always keep coming back for but this novel was also very emotional it actually surprised me. Except maybe for Shane, (because I think with all that happened to him his story is will go in that direction) I feel that this is the most emotional book one Liliana has written. Or more appropriately, it is the most emotional book I've read of her.
I also loved the participation of all the Mackenzies in this novel. It made me want to go back and reread each of their stories. I really had a great time reading this book and I can't wait to read about Shane next.
This novel's on the short side, but it packs quite a punch! Trouble Maker is #11.5 in the series--something I did not realize going in, so while I was reading it I kept thinking, Huh, all these people already found their significant others, this must be quite the series! I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if you've read the first 11+ books (there's a bunch of novellas in there too), then this one is going to be like a big ol' family reunion. If you haven't read them, like me, you're still going to be okay, though keeping track of all those extra characters is going to be a lot more challenging.
Even though my head was spinning *just* a bit from trying to remember which MacKenzie was which, I really did enjoy this story. Marnie's backstory is just so tragic, and when her budding romance with Beckett is...well...nipped in the bud, I just wanted to cry. If anyone was deserving of a second chance at romance, it was these two. And thank goodness they're going to get it!
Though I would have liked to have seen a little bit more of Beck's attempts to win back Marnie--because I'm sure that guy was giving it his all, and what we do see is all kinds of adorbs--it's really hard to complain about anything in this story. There's a whole lot of sweet, a touch of suspense, a bunch of angst and drama, and one fantastic couple.
Sigh...and now my TBR's grown. AGAIN. Darn these authors with the series backlists! ;)

This is book sixteen in the MacKenzie Family series!
Meet the quite Marnie Whitlock. Marnie's never known what it’s like to be classed as normal. Marnie and her family was always moving from place to place. Trying to hiding from reporters and psychologists, all because of her gift. Some people would see it as a curse some would see it as interesting and helpful. Seeing a victim and feeling his pain as the last of his miserable and evil life ebbed away, and she was helpless to save him. It was pure torture. Suddenly one day it disappeared and Marnie was finally free. That was until those who hunted her down for her gift tried to kill her. That's when Marnie's gift came back with a unforgetable vengeance.
The Handsome Beckett Hamilton. Beckett leads a simple life. Beckett's ranch is very profitable and hopefully a legacy he’ll be proud to pass down his children one day. Beckett's work fills all of his time from sun-rise to sun-set. Beckett's romances are always short and sweet. Beckett wouldn’t have it any other way. Suddenly Becket he runs into the very quiet and reserved Marnie Whitlock just shortly after she moves to town. Marnie intrigues Beckett like no woman ever has. Beckett realises that Marnie's hiding something. Beckett hopes that Marnie starts to begin and learn to trust him before it’s too late.
Liliana Hart's books are so amazing, i love it how she writes 5* books
Marnie has seen and experienced enough hurt to last many lifetimes. Yet she finds courage within herself to continue on. A special gift give Marnie an extra insight to thing around her. A bless and a curse both in her eyes. Trust misplaced has Marnie starting over in her hometown. Holding her head high, proud of watch she can do, Marnie takes on her life with all she has. An extraordinary character.
Beckett made me fall for a cowboy. A man who's proud of who he is, what he does and the legacy he puts his soul into. A good hearted man, who loyal, trustworthy, and good to his word. Sexy and built, with the patience of a saint. Beckett work his cowboy way into my heart.
Trouble Maker is my first sampling of Liliana Hart’s work and will not be my last. Heartbreaking and warning all in one. Power packed with emotion and lingering passion that spans over a decade. A second chance romance that was only ignited before it was torn apart. A novella that hits you hard in all the right ways. Hang on for a one emotional and sexy ride.
And complementary copy of this book was provided by the author/publisher for an honest review. Receiving a complimentary copy does not affect the outcome of this review.
I have loved most if not all the MacKenzie books thus far and this one was no different. It has been a few since I have read the other books in this series, but I fell right into the story and the characters like I had never stopped reading them. Liliana has such an amazing way of drawing you into her books and making you live them while you read.
Beckett I must say I loved in this...he was a gentleman when he needed to be and fierce as well when the time called for it. Marnie is such a strong character...she has been through literal hell and back but has never gotten over her first love. Let's not forget that Marnie also is a clairvoyant as well which pretty much ostracized her from most people including her father. It was heartbreaking to read about Marnie's past and everything her father put her through.
There were parts in this that made me LOL as well, especially with how Marnie handled Hazel...I cracked up during that.
I think this was a great addition to the MacKenzie series and I love reading these and seeing how things are progressing for this close knit family as well as the community.
I’ve been a huge fan of the MacKenzies by Liliana Hart since Dane, and have read everyone of their stories, and this was one of my favorites. Marnie was a very sweet character who had a difficult life with her parents, especially her father. Beckett was very charming when we first met him, and stayed that way until the end. I loved how protective he was of Marnie from the first time they see each other again, she was resistant to him at first and he still looked out for her and defended her honor. It was great to see a bit of Coopers POV in there, and seeing the rest of the family is always good. It was heartbreaking to see some of Marys history, but to see how she’d overcome was amazing. Now to Shane, I have been wanting his story for so long and having these little catch ups on him has been great. I adore the MacKenzie books and have recommended them several times and will continue to do so, another five star read from Liliana Hart.
so i have read Liliana's books for awhile now and have loved this series . so what do you do when your life is thrown into chaos and you feel you don't deserve happiness but leave people who love you but needed to be done so you could see that you were meant to come back and be with the one man whom you first kissed as well as saw a future with but never dreamed you would be with him in the end . and what if another man whom you thought you loved but never truly loved came back because he thought he deserved her fame her fortune but never saw her . and what do you do when the one woman you knew was your equal in every way possible came back but to have her ex try to hurt her what will happen next . find out by buying this book and her 5 other new releases that came out today .
Trouble Maker is a story about survival in many ways. Marnie Whitlock has been a survivor her entire life. She survived an extremely violent upbringing as a child, being taken from her home and the people she knew, then later a controlling boyfriend. She is back in her home town now to make a fresh start and to find happiness within herself.
Beckett has had a thing for Marnie for years, but his life is ranching and being the owner of his families ranch now he is tied to the land.
Beckett and Marnie had me rooting for them from the beginning of this story. They have some twists and turns and a couple of detours have to be taken but Liliana takes us on a ride through their story that will leave you wanting more and at the same time give you that happy satisfying HEA feeling that comes from a great romance.
This may not be about one of the 9 MacKenzie kids (adults now), but she is a close second. Maurine has been Darcy's best friend since kindergarten. She left Surrender when she was 17 when her parents died and she went into foster care. Now 15 years later she has come home.
Beckett still loves Maurine. She may not be the 17 year old he last saw, but he loves her more now. However, she just came out of a bad relationship and it's going to take awhile to get there. But one thing Beckett has is patience and he will use it to get the love of his life back.
We get a closer look into Mary MacKenzie in this book and I think Mary and Jim need their book at some point too. Everyone makes appearances and we get a few glimpses of Shane too.....can't wait for his story. In true MacKenzie fashion, they all surround Maurine with love.
okay let me start by saying this... I didn't like it. not one bit. I didn't like that ... IT WAS TOO SHORT! and I didn't like it, I LOVED IT!
oh dear lord. I loved how Lilliana delivered this story. I loved it from the first page of the prologue to the last word of the last chapter. every single bit of this story was addictive. jilted exlovers, demons from the past, busy body gossips, angsty love.. so much is happening. and let's not forget the Mackenzie family.
let's just say this, this books proves Lilliana is a force to be reckoned with in the romance genre. not many authors can write a book you refuse to put down til it's over.. LH does. hands down. this one doesn't disappoint
*arc received from the author for an honest review*
The thing with Liliana Hart's stories, is that the characters are so real that you cannot help but be invested in their lives and futures. Marnie's life has been hard and just when she found love, it was cruelly ripped away from her, like everything else. Barrett wasn't man enough then, will he be this time? And will he be allowed to prove that he is? But this isn't only about them, Cooper and Clair also get a little time to remind us of why we like them so much. The guest appearances do kit stop there though, as the formidable Mary MacKenzie also gets to worm herself a little deeper into our hearts. While this isn't strictly about the MacKenzies, it is about their world and therefore about them. It was well worth the read.
~~I received this in exchange for my honest opinion~~
Liliana knows how to write a great book. Not only do I love reading about the Mackenzie's in Surrender, MT, but reading about their friends is just as awesome!! There aren't going to be many words about this book, because I don't want to give ANYTHING away. But this is a sorta spin-off of the Mackenzie series. Trouble Maker has the Mackenzie family in there, but this is about 2 people that started something, then had to leave.
If you have NEVER read Liliana's work, you are definitely missing out. Not only will you fall in love with her, but you will fall in love with her writing!! Get this book, get the ENTIRE Mackenzie series and fall in love with Surrender, MT.
I think I'd quite happily live in Surrender. The Mackenzie universe brings us the story of Marnie and Beckett, and what a story it is! Marnie never knew the unconditional love of her parents. Her dad was a mean brute that took his belt to her daily while her mother watched on in fear but never lifting a finger to help. Beckett was the kind rich boy fixing to become 'the man' on the ranch and way beyond her league. Now Marnie has a gift, a gift that others seek to exploit for their own gains but Beckett? He's only ever wanted HER. Thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the series and liked the way our dear friends from the other titles popped up. Five star read.
