Chanaakya!!, I don't think there is any Indian who has not heard of his name, fame and intelligence. Probably its the same curiosity that made me choose this Voluminous book from my shelf which was lying untouched since months. I now realise why did I delay this long ? I think I was scared of its size of whopping 1000 pages!! Alas! I regret!
Honestly speaking, when I just began (the initial few pages), I felt the author has overpraised the character chaanakya. However I was slow and steady in deciding it. I also felt if it was necessary to make this book so voluminous!. As I picked up with the pace and finally finished it, I feel Why didn't the author write for another 1000 pages ? Why didnt the author use more superlative words to describe him ?
On the surface level one may feel the greatness of chaanakya for establishing the great Maurayan Empire. At a little deeper one may understand his vision of establishing `ekachakraadipatya' to protect sanaatana dharma and to avoid possible greek invasions. Its also very evident that chanaakya built this largest empire with the support of Chandragupta, his friends and pupil of Magadha. His tactics of acquiring dynasties without war is praiseworthy. He is also known for his thought-provoking decisions etc etc..,
At a more deeper level what I felt reading this great work is that: Chaankaya with his `sootras' of `Arthashaastra' just didn't rebuild Mauryan empire. He rather built personalities. He showed every reader, ``what it is to Live". He proved that every individual himself is a greatest empire. His brain and heart has to coordinate well to build a sustainable life. He further adds in your life the simplicity which makes you think Big. He shows that, by following the path of Dharma from heart, and Karma through brain, can do wonders. Each one of the characters mentioned in the book represents a different kind of force in our life. Chaanakya utilises them all to build the largest and strongest empire (An empire thats built to rule mankind and thats us).
The author Rudramoorty Shastry is no less than a voice of Kautilya himself. The conversations between the characters in this work are so deep as oceans (only if you read them carefully - you should only know an entirely different life exists on this seabed!). They bring out so much changes in your thoughts. Every character is a lesson of life. However, what caught my attentions are 1. The ever fragrant love of Charana and Sugandhi 2. The swamynishte of Vasubhooti 3. The humbleness of Chandanadaasa and the vaidya Sumanta 4. The bhaavalahari of Madhavi
If you are willing to build an empire of your life on the foundations Tarka, Shaastra, Love and devotion, and ofcourse dharma, please read this book! I am sure you will all contribute to make this Earth a better place to Live!! Chaanakya is all within us!

ಇವಿಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೇ ವಿಧವಾವಿವಾಹ, ತನ್ನ ಸಹಚರನಿಗೆ ಗಣಿಕೆ ಒಬ್ಬಳನ್ನು ವಿವಾಹವಾಗಲು ಪ್ರೇರೇಪಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದಲ್ಲಿನ ಹುಳುಕುಗಳನ್ನು ಹೋಗಲಾಡಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮುಂತಾದ ವಿಚಾರಗಳಿಂದ ಚಾಣಕ್ಯನ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಗೌರವಾದರಗಳು ಮೂಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಅವನ ರಾಜನೀತಿ, ಸವಾಲುಗಳನ್ನು ಹಲವು ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನದಿಂದ ವಿಮರ್ಶಿಸಿ ಪರಿಹಾರ ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ರೀತಿ ಅನನ್ಯ.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಗಾತ್ರವನ್ನು ಇನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಡಿತಗೊಳಿಸಬಹುದಿತ್ತು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಒಂದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಓದು.

This is an wonderful book which covers Chanakya's life story as well as Chandragupta Maurya story. This book has 1001 pages!. Once i crossed 20 page, I started living in 320BC! I could visualize whats happening in that time. Its an amazing style of writing, just simple and very clear. Every one who wants to know about Chanukya, Magadha and Maurya empires must read this. Thanks to Su Rudramurthy Shastry.

ಕಥೆಯ ಸಾರಾಂಶ: ಮಗಧ, ಆರ್ಯಾವರ್ತದ ಶಕ್ತಿಶಾಲಿ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ. ನಂದ ವಂಶದ ಧನನಂದನ ಕ್ರೂರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ನಲುಗಿಹೋಗಿದ್ದ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯ. ಅತಿಯಾದ ದುರಾಸೆ, ಸ್ತ್ರೀ ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹ ಇವೇ ಮೊದಲಾದ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಚಟಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳ ಮೇಲೆ ಅನಾವಶ್ಯಕ ತೆರಿಗೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇರಿ ವಿಕೃತ ಆನಂದ ಪಡುವುದು ಅವನ ಚಾಳಿ. ಅತಿಯಾದ ಸ್ವಾಮಿನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಿಂದ ಎಂಥಾ ಕ್ರೂರ ಆದೇಶಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕೂಡ ಪಾಲಿಸುತಿದ್ದ ಅವನ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಅಮಾತ್ಯ ರಾಕ್ಷಸ (ವಸುಭೂತಿ). ಒಬ್ಬ ಚರ್ಮಕಾರನಿಗೆ ಆದ ಅನ್ಯಾಯವನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಭಟಿಸಲು ಹೋದ ಚನಕನನ್ನ ಮೋಸದಿಂದ ಕೊಲ್ಲಿಸಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಆತ್ಮಹತ್ಯೆ ಎಂದು ಬಿಂಬಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಹಾಗು ನ್ಯಾಯವನ್ನು ಕೇಳಲು ಬಂದ ಚನಕ ಪುತ್ರ ವಿಷ್ಣುಗುಪ್ತನನ್ನು ರಾಜಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೈನಿಕರಿಂದ ತಳ್ಳಿಸಿ ಅವಮಾನಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ತಾಯಿಗಾಗಿ ಶಪಥಗೈದು ದೇವವ್ರತ ಭೀಷ್ಮನಾದಂತೆ, ತನ್ನ ತಂದೆಯ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣರಾದವರ ಕೊಂದೇ ತೀರುವುದಾಗಿ ಶಪಥಗೈದ ಚನಕನ ಮಗ ವಿಷ್ಣುಗುಪ್ತ "ಚಾಣಕ್ಯ"ನಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ಪಿಪ್ಪಿಲಿವನವೆಂಬ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮೋಸದಿಂದ ಕಬಳಿಸಿ, ಯುವರಾಜನಾಗಬೇಕಾದ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತ ಮೌರ್ಯನನ್ನು ಮಗಧದ ಸೇನೆಯ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ತುಕಡಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥ್ಯನಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಧನನಂದ. ತನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮರು ಪಡೆಯುವ ಹಂಬಲದಿಂದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತನಿಗೆ ಚಾಣಕ್ಯ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಪುಸ್ತಕ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ: ಬಹಳ ಸುದೀರ್ಘ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ (೧೦೦೧ ಪುಟಗಳು). ಲೇಖಕರೇ ಪೀಠಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ ಚಾಣಕ್ಯನ ಬಗೆಗೆ ನಮಗೆ ದೊರಕುವ ಆಧಾರಗಳು ಬಹು ಕಡಿಮೆ, ಆದುದರಿಂದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಶೇಕಡಾ ೯೦ ರಷ್ಟು ಇರುವವು ಕಾಲ್ಪನಿಕ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಹಾಗು ಘಟನಾವಳಿಗಳು. ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು brief ಆಗಿ ಬರೆಯುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಕಡೆ ತೀರಾ ಎಳೆದ ಹಾಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಓದುತ್ತಾ Dr. ರಾಜ್ ಕುಮಾರ್ ಅವರ ಯಾವುದೋ ಚಾರಿತ್ರಿಕ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ನೋಡುವ ಅನುಭವವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕಥೆಯು ತೀರಾ one-sided ಆದಂತೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ. ಚಾಣಕ್ಯನ ಮುಂದೆ ಬಾಕಿ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಗೌಣವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಚಾಣಕ್ಯ ವಿರಚಿತ ಅರ್ಥಶಾಸ್ತ್ರದ ವಿಷಯಗಳು ಕಡಿಮೆ. ಅವನು ಅದನ್ನು ಬರೆದನೆಂದು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ತಿಳಿಯುತ್ತದೆ.
ಪುರುಸೊತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಗ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಬಹುದು.
ಪಿಪ್ಪಿಲಿವನವೆಂಬ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮೋಸದಿಂದ ಕಬಳಿಸಿ, ಯುವರಾಜನಾಗಬೇಕಾದ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತ ಮೌರ್ಯನನ್ನು ಮಗಧದ ಸೇನೆಯ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ತುಕಡಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥ್ಯನಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಧನನಂದ. ತನ್ನ ರಾಜ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮರು ಪಡೆಯುವ ಹಂಬಲದಿಂದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಚಂದ್ರಗುಪ್ತನಿಗೆ ಚಾಣಕ್ಯ ಜೊತೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ.

A Voluminous book of 1001 pages... Author has mapped the theme and completed the novel by conveying all his messages... This is a epic journey of Vishnugupta to Chanakya and Senapathi Chandragupta to Chakravarty Chandragupta Maurya.. This novel can relate to Mahabarath.. Here Chandragupta denotes Yudhistira, Chanakya denotes Krishna, Rakshasa or Vasubhuti denotes Bhishma, Shriyaka denotes Shakuni, Charana denotes Arjuna and so on... There are many characters but I loved two characters, One is Rakshasa or Vasubhuti (prime minister of Dhananada) who was so obedient to his master Dhananada even if he is evil and bad... Another character is Sugandhi (wife of charana) a prostitute who is very kind hearted. Sacrifices herself to Dhananda just to help Charana who she is loving to... Loved the chemistry of Sugandhi and Charana... Only negative content of this book is too big which may make reader to loss his interest even to start by seeing the size of book... there are some characters which can be edited as there was no role playing directly... otherwise book is just a blend of class and epic.... Must read

ಚಾಣಕ್ಯಯುಗ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳ ಮೂಲಕ ಮರುಕಳಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಅನಿಸುತ್ತ. ಗಾತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ದೊಡ್ಡದಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಬೇಸರ ಅನಿಸಲ್ಲ

Reading about the founding of the Maurya Empire was a long term dream of mine which has finally come true. After reading this epic of a thousand pages I come out more or less satisfied.
To start with, it is very difficult to find a proper novel about Indian History, at least not something that is written by an IIT/IIM "writer". (I refuse to read those) So I was overjoyed to find a book that too in Kannada which narrated the life of Chanakya and Chandragupta. The author narrates a very detailed depiction involving hundreds of characters, a true epic befitting the empire it talks about.
Overall, reading the book was a good experience. The story is good and quite interesting and a refreshing change from the usual medieval European setting found in fantasy and historical books. The author, through the voice of Chanakya focuses on the planning and framework of founding an empire which is so often neglected in books and takes backseat to the battle elements. The book considers the multiple elements which were present at that time in India, be it the clashes of religion or the rivalries between kingdoms.
However one thing I did not come to terms with till the end of the book was the choice of narration and the characters. I have the same issue with most of the books that I've disliked in Fantasy/Historical Fiction.
The author chooses to narrate the story in a theme which is suited for Pauranika settings rather than historical settings, that is, the good vs evil theme. In the book, good people are good beyond imagining and evil people are pure evil. The brave are ever admirable, never wavering or faltering while the cowards show their fear in every turn. This is believable in a Pauranika setting where it is easy to believe there lived men with no faults, the pious, selfless men who are the embodiment of morals and righteousness. When you apply the same logic to a historical book with real characters, it is far less appealing. There is excessive amounts of virtue in every good character. I do wish this was written the way Bhyrappa writes his books.
Despite my dislikes mentioned above it is still a good book to read and definitely worth giving a try.

This is my first historical novel read in Kannada.. so take my review with a pinch of salt.
The author has captured the story of Chanakya, Chandragupta Maurya along with the lifestyle of people in the Aryavartha in a simple way, understandable for everyone. The storyline also describes the influence of the foreign invader Alexander the Great, which is commendable.
However, throughout the entire novel, I had a sense that the author wanted to reach that imaginary satisfaction of creating a 1001 pages book. This comes from the fact that there are numerous instances in the book were unnecessarily longer from the perspective of the overall storyline. For example, the repeated thoughts the characters have about certain person/incident and all the characters repeatedly explaining to each other of being overly submissive/respectful towards others were in certain instances unnecessary or over-used.
In many instances the dialogues seems to be very much inspired by Dr. Raj Kumar movies.
Being a historical event based novel, the author has to follow certain boundaries for his imagination. However, through the book, I never got a sense of suspense or curiosity. It was a plain and yet enjoyable read.
If you’re looking for a book with exciting storyline to keep you up all night, this isn’t the book for you.
If you are looking for a lazy weekend read, I will recommend this book.

Hands down the best history based fiction I read so far. Every key incidents has been depicted in such a way that it's almost impossible to think that there is fictional elements to the book.

1. Dialogues are pedestrian. Considering it’s a 1001 page book, I wonder what the editor was doing.
2. The way Chandragupta’s escape from the prison was planned & executed by his friend Charana is one of the book’s highlights. Charana is probably the most interesting character in the book— patient, level headed, wise, & courageous.
3. Chandragupta is portrayed as too much of a goody two shoes, which Kings & Rulers never were.
4. The Author is adept at describing action & building momentum on page. Yet, he repeatedly gets bogged down in inane dialogues that don’t take the story forward. So, after having read 632 pages, I finally gave up. This is the first time in my life I have left a book unfinished.
P.S. One phrase I want historical fiction writers to stop using: “ಜಂಘಾಬಲವೇ ಉಡುಗಿಹೋಯಿತು”. I have come across it so often, ನನ್ನ Clicheಬಲ ಉಡುಗೋಗಿದೆ.
