Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

The third part of the exam begins here, and it kicks off--pun intended--in the right direction! I had forgotten so many of the details between the battles that this makes it even more exciting.

And for it to end on a cliff-hanger regarding Sakura's battle should be illegal. But her story arc has been so much more impressive lately. I'm glad there's some justice done to her character now, even if I have a tough time convincing myself that she's as powerful as Sasuke and Naruto.

Yours truly,

Cut scene to the beginning of the tournament. Tournament? Why? Oh yeah... we gotta weed out the remaining slackers and the peeps who aren't doing their countries proud.

Fortunately, we're not asked to do much soul searching, here. Instead, we get some quick and interesting battles with peeps with wide abilities and mismatched aptitudes. It's a much more fun read, in general, over the previous volume, but never as mind-blowingly cool in quick instances, such as Sasuke's curse.

On the other hand, the fight between Inu and Sakura was enough to make up for everything and make me cheer and laugh. She really has my heart in this one, and it doesn't matter if it's just a carry-over from her greatness in volume 6. She's earned it.

The preliminary round of the Journeyman Ninja Exam has started and Sasuke barely won his match, while Sakura is going toe to toe with Ino. This volume was full of one-on-one combats, out of which Kankuro and Shino's fight was top-notch. I'm so psyched about the upcoming fight of Naruto and Gaara.

This volume is starting to hold my attention a little more because the one on one fights are more interesting to me then the fights that happened already!

This volume starts with where it was left previously..the second stage of the chunin exam is finally over and now it will be third and final round but since there are more than usual participants, there will be a preliminary round now to narrow down the participants....

It is really interesting idea and this round was my favorite in Anime and here also I feel the same intensity and excitement as I felt in Anime.. Sasuke's curse mark still hurts bad and he is now forced to fight without using his special ability, Sharingan... and also he is not allowed to use any ninjutsu.. so it is really tough fight for him..

The confrontation between Orochimaru and Kakashi was the highlight of this volume and also the final battle between Ino and Sakura.. I was not interested in this fight before but after reading this.. I think this fight was much better than I judged it in Anime before....

The ending was again a cliffhanger, like it is becoming a tradition for this manga series now. Overall, a good read and slightly better than previous volume.

Gaara really stole the show in these early arcs. Shame his character became rather stale later on.

Sakura's memorable moment was when she found a goal to better herself for her team's sake in the previous volume. I thought that cutting her hair solidified her resolve. While that was a great moment for her character, Kishimoto tugged her back into her petty dispute with Ino. Their rivalry doesn't do much for either character. I like that Kishimoto included Sakura's desire to be like Ino, or surpass her, but the reasoning is still shallow. So far it seems as though the female characters of the series are written to exist as extensions of the male characters. They are easily infatuated with the boys and are more interested in them. They have no goals that push them beyond their limits, which makes their careers an afterthought.

The whole Sasuke fiasco at the exams was weird.
first, with all these elite ninja and THE hokage himself, and they couldn't notice Orochimaru standing there among them? He's strong, but definitely not stronger than all of them!
second, the hokage's decisions are highly questionable, he know how effective and dangerous Saskue's seal is, and yet he decides to let him continue on in the matches and doesn't even supervise the sealing process with Sasuke? seemed weird!

Nonetheless, it's interesting and the it was fun to see the different techniques here.

I got to say, the battles are pretty good. Even if there's some stuff that really should not be that long, like well, the flashback on what happened between two characters and their once friendship or whatever. I was like really, we're having this now. Oh okay then. Still gets a 4 for the fight scenes alone. I mean there's more going on in this one but still. Anyway, the series has its moments and potential. Good volume regardless.

Loved seeing Iruka again, also more Kakashi content among the curse mark drama. I know what's happening but I'm stressed for everyone anyways. I also forgot how long stage three is. It's fun to see everyone's individual abilities but ngl I don't care about it, we already saw most everything in stage one.

*Read as part of the 25 Days of Manga challenge for December 2020.*

Considering the two previous volumes felt structurally weak in terms of the plot, I do feel as though this volume really made a pronounced effort to pick things back up. (Or maybe I just didn't feel like the "wilderness survival" aspect of the Forest of Death felt genuine.) Here we get to the prelim bouts being used to cull the numbers of entrants for the third round of the chunin exams, and here's where things definitely start to shine a little more. While there's absolutely something to be said for the way this larger plot is unfolding beneath the surface level, I personally think the prelim bouts are such a nice example of character depth and exploration in the applicants we see as the bouts begin.

Personally, and this probably isn't a shock to anyone who's kept up with my reviews of the series so far, I don't really care about Sasuke's match. It's a quick round to show off how Special™ his eyes are, that he was able to replicate a move used against him once, before then ushering him away to deal with the issue of the curse mark placed on him by Orochimaru. (Kind of sad he's more interesting when he's passed out and being discussed as a playing piece rather than when he's awake and trying to hide the fact he has the exact same number of brain cells as Naruto.) Shino's match is nightmare fuel, and arguably, Kankuro's is too, but it's still cool to see how quickly their matches end as a sort of grim testament to the abilities they brought into the exams to begin with.

And...then we get Sakura and Ino's match. I tend to (and probably will for a long time to come) rag on Sakura a fair amount, but I don't mind this match. The fight itself happening between flashbacks of the girls and their lost friendship is a nice narrative way to expose their shared history and what they meant to each other before they allowed Sasuke to be the thing that came between them. I think my only major annoyance with the lead-in to the match is the fact that everyone (including Ino's own team) seem to think she's going to fail hard and that Sakura's already so much better and more skilled, to the point the latter won't break a sweat in their match. Which...if you're looking just at the technique of chakra control and manipulation and that was the sole thing on which the matches were being judged? Then yeah, okay. It's been shown regularly since early on that Sakura has advanced and well-honed skill with chakra manipulation. But...she is still sorely lacking in terms of physical combat and technique. Iruka more or less says so at the start of the volume. And given that we've seen Ino hold her own a tiny bit better than Sakura in the field of combat, I'd say that they're arguably evenly matched. So I really don't follow with this nonsense of everyone having absolutely no faith in Ino, much less Shikamaru and Choji. Way to encourage your teammate, guys.

One of Naruto's greatest strengths is the way Masashi Kishimoto takes his time telling a story. After four volumes, our heroes are still struggling to survive the Chûnin Exams. Before beginning the third level, the number of participants must be whittled down, necessitating one-on-one combat, possibly to the death. Meanwhile, shinobi Kakashi Hatake attempts to heal Sasuke and suppress his curse when the malevolent Orochimaru shows up. I like how the Naruto series makes clear that the students' teachers and authority figures must also deal with threats and danger. No one is immune from contact with evil.

Shino is so GOATED I wish he was more important I feel like he was hard done by even more so than Lee in Shippuden. Orochimaru is still a freak!
Sasuke needs to stop aura farming and go to the doctors.
I forgot that Sakura and Ino actually BOX in this exam, I’ve completely forgotten how this fight ends so I’m gassed to read volume 9 🦊🦊🦊

I read Vol 8th. They can pass 2nd exam. Next, They fight each other 1 on 1. They are tried whether they can fight 1 on 1. Then, their power also excite us. They are just boys. However, to become 中忍, they fight mercilessly. The scene is the most exciting in this vol.
