WINNETOU I – II - III
Karl May (1842-1912)
Karl May was one of the most popular German writers of all time, noted mainly for books set in the American Wild West, in the 18th and 19th century.
It was Young Adult Literature in 1950/60;
I owe it to Karl May and his adventure books to discover my love for reading at the age of 12 to 14. It has become part of me and still is, as my abiding passion for reading is showing.
The Winnetou series is about:
"Old Shatterhand" the hero of the book and his adventures as Greenhorn in his first job as a surveyor in the Wild West.
Grizzly bears, buffalo herds and mustangs, Indian attacks, fights with bowie knives, pistols and shotguns, betrayal, greed for gold of the diggers, and more of the sort.
Old Shatterhand's friendship with Henry the gun maker of Saint Louis and inventor of the first repetitive gun, and also with " Sam Hawkin s”, his friends Dick and Will, three scouts.
The first encounter in a fierce and almost deadly fight between "Old Shatterhand" and "Winnetou" the proud young Apache Chief.
It all comes to a climax at the Pueblo of the Apache tribe, with Old Shatterhand recovering from his wounds, gaining his freedom and friendship with Winnetou.
Book II is of the same nature, with new and different adventures, in different American environments from East to West and North to South.
Shatterhand and Winnetou are chasing rogues and enemies, and make new friends, like “Old Death” and “Old Firehand”.
Book III continues adventures while chasing the Morgan bandits and fighting fierce Sioux warriors.
It all ends with Winnetou’s death and legacy to his friend and Shatterhand’s revenge on the murderer Santos.
As I mentioned above, I owe these books my early love for reading, and will, therefore, abstain from criticising Karl May's style and quality of writing.
It would be easy, but unnecessary. All depends on the state of mind and with which eyes the reader is reading. Nostalgia in my case.
For future readers, it is good to remember that this is primarily literature for young adults.

The author is German, and he has never been to USA, and never met any native people and yet he wrote this absolutely amazing book placed in American Old West in which he writes about friendship and differences between Apache Winnetou and Old Shatterhand.
I personally think Karl May has been, and still is, my Tolkien.

Tapi rupanya jiwa padang praire begitu luas dan tidak bertepi, sebuah jiwa yang mencakup hidup dan mati. Dan barang siapa yg telah mengenalnya, boleh pergi kemana pun tetapi pasti akan kembali lagi ke sini.

Karl May overdoes it (more than usual) in this one.
Winnetou, dying as Christian, and his friend Old Shatterhand being so superior to everyone else - especially morally - just gets a bit much in this one.
The rest of the story is fine, as it always is, but is a bit pieced together.

[again, nie wiem który raz czytałem, przynajmniej 10-ty, ostatnio dawno temu]
Tak jak w poprzednim tomie, ten również był podzielony na dwie "przygody" – jedna w towarzystwie Sans-eara, druga z Fredem Walkerem. W obu pojawia się też Winnetou, (chociaż nie przez cały czas), lecz to w drugiej pełni większą rolę jeśli chodzi o fabułę. Iiiii tym razem również druga połowa podobała mi się bardziej, ponieważ najwyraźniej lubię cierpieć – nie spodziewałem się, że ostatnie kilka rozdziałów tak uderzy, w końcu czytałem/słuchałem je już wiele razy, do tego jak już wspomniałem pierwsza połowa tomu średnio mnie wciągnęła. Ale jednak uderzyło, podejrzewam więc że ponownie zapomnę większość tego tomu, nie licząc kilku głównych wydarzeń.
Ze wszystkich trzech tomów moim ulubionym nadal jest pierwszy, nie jestem pewien czy jest on "najlepszy", ale na pewno czytało mi się go najlepiej i najbardziej mnie wciągnął podczas rereadu (no i główni bohaterowie są tam chyba najmniej "idealni", nie wyprzedza ich wszędzie aż taka legenda i tak dalej. Super się czyta o Shatterhandzie, kiedy ten jeszcze nie zna się na wszystkim możliwym i niemożliwym).
Czy polecam te książki? To skomplikowane. W wielu miejscach naprawdę źle się zestarzała i pomimo bycia w założeniu zdecydowanie przeciwko rasizmowi, którego często krytykuje, jest w niej niestety masa stereotypów, idealizowania lub patronizowania zależnie od sytuacji, i czasem też zwyczajnie błędnych informacji (nie wszystkich, ale jednak trafiają się różne mity). Jest to wytłumaczalne, patrząc na datę jej napisania, ale nadal można a nawet powinno się to krytykować.
Do tego główni bohaterowie (rozumiejąc przez nich Winnetou i Old Shatterhanda) są przez 95% czasu przedstawieni jako idealni pod względem przekonań, umiejętności i zachowań, a reszta postaci – obojętnie z jak długim doświadczeniem – ma niemal zawsze gwarancję wyjścia przy nich na mniejszych znawców życia, szczególnie w tym tomie.
I oczywiście, zdarzają im się błędy, wpadają w skrajnie niebezpieczne sytuacje, czasem czegoś zaniedbają czy się pomylą... ale przez większość czasu Shatterhand, niczym preriowy Sherlock Holmes, wyczytuje z jednej znalezionej nitki całe sytuacje, których nie udawało się domyślić nikomu innemu, a Winnetou jest Szlachetny i Wspaniały i Przykładem Dla Całego Świata i [wstaw 50 innych przymiotników jakimi opisuje go Charlie (they're so into each other oh my God)].
Ale jednak... jeśli nie bierze się wszystkiego tak bardzo poważnie i dostroi umysł do sposobu, w jaki działa ta seria, można się super bawić – zastanawiać się, co tym razem zrobi Old Shatterhand, bo że ten typ coś odwali jest pewne niemal zawsze, taki z niego silly człowiek (szczególnie w pierwszej połowie tego tomu miałem wrażenie, że autor był w bardzo silly goofy nastroju pisząc go, może żeby zrekompensować połowę drugą XD ale poważnie, to co Charlie tam wyprawia is just something else sometimes). Powtarzać "sir that's gay" co dwie strony. A także "of course you do" za każdym razem, gdy się okazuje, że nasz Charles umie/wie/uważa kolejną rzecz, której się można było po nim spodziewać znając go już trochę. I ogólnie nie traktować większości rzeczy specjalnie poważnie, a jako czystą rozrywkę.
A szczególnie brać sporą poprawkę na dawne czasy i, jak wspomniałem przy pierwszym tomie, nie "uczyć" się z tych książek o native mieszkańcach terenu USA, tylko w tym celu szukać innych źródeł (to znaczy, paru rzeczy można się dowiedzieć, oczywiście, jednak zawsze lepiej sprawdzić też inne źródła). Zachować krytyczne myślenie, nie zawsze zgadzać się z bohaterami i tak dalej. Te książki to praktycznie fanfik z self-insertem autora, który zrobił pewien research i dorzucił własne przekonania i zainteresowania, i tak chyba najlepiej do nich podchodzić.

Winnetou III is a solid book that is emotionally gripping and intellectually challenging. The story revolves around the themes of friendship, heroism, resistance to unfair power structures and the search for a higher level of moral ideal. But behind the facade of adventure and romance lies a rather complicated confrontation with the colonial ideas of the time.
The end of the book is quite dramatic and tragic. Winnetou dies a heroic death to save others. This is the highlight of the book and sadly shows how the indigenous culture was destroyed by western colonisation.
Nevertheless, there is still a little happy ending at the end. Winnetou and his wisdom remain as a role model in the story. Old Shatterhand carries on this memory and teaches what respect, friendship and justice are.
Winnetou III is still a fascinating book today. Although it is simply written, it provides plenty of food for thought.

Die erste Geschichte in diesem Band hat mich fürchterlich wütend gemacht, aber die ganze Sache mit war so delicious und so im Geiste und Stil von Band 1, der mir ja unironisch erzählerisch ganz gut gefallen hat, dass ich wieder besänftigt wurde.
Der Hörbuch-Erzähler hat überdies eine sehr angenehme Stimme und hat mich nur manchmal darin aufgeregt, wie er Sachen ausspricht ("old", "rivulet", "zounds").

"Winnetou III" hat es geschafft noch langweiliger und langatmiger zu sein als die ersten beiden Teile der Serie. Der Fokus dieses Teils auf Religion hat mir ebenfalls nicht gefallen und - mehr noch als in den anderen Teilen - wirkte der Protagonist sehr überheblich.

If you're an adolescent guy, it's impossible not to love this book.
There are several reasons why I think this book is brilliant and that EVERY boy should read the Winnetou trilogy.
THE NARRATION STYLE OF Karl May
What made me stick throughout the entire story, is May's narration style. I LOVE travelogs (even fictional ones). Winnetou III doesn't follow the traditional novel structure. It's essentially a story built-up of several episodical chapters that make up one epic western adventure.
I sincerely doubt whether I should believe in the generally accepted view that Karl May has ever actually been to the United States. In the book, he describes the United States in such a profound geographical and also cultural detail. I know that he heavily romanticized the topic of Native Americans in the United States. Yet his descriptions of places, cultures, and peoples seem to be so realistic that it's hardly possible that a man with such extensive knowledge in the 19th century would be able to write a piece like this without seeing it live.
Karl May is a perfect Old Shatterhand. The way he leads the reader through his "travel" notes can draw the reader to the plot COMPLETELY.
I haven't read many books about Indians that were originally written in the German language. Yet I dare to say that this one is one of the best thanks to its popularity not only in Germany but also in other European countries (like my native Slovakia). I read a Slovak translation from 1965 which still keeps pretty solid popularity even in the 21st century.
VALUES THE BOOK TEACHES
Starting with the first book of the trilogy up to this final dramatic piece, the series in general deals with a rather complex topic - the relations between Amerindians and white Americans (or whites in general). The book sometimes seems to be a little spoiled with some incorrect, generalized narratives - The whites came to the New World with a sweet smile on their lips, and the reds greeted them with open arms. This was simply not true in many cases.
But then, May answers it with a view that still many won't agree with.
There were both good and bad guys on BOTH sides.
You had American Indians who were brave and friendly like Winnetou (in the story though, he struggles with moral issues that he notices in German Americans). On the other hand, there were Indians who would sexually assault, torture, and murder women and hold children captive whenever they invaded other tribes - The Comanche tribe for example (not explicitly in the books, but it's a historical fact)
There were white men like Old Shatterhand who behaved heroically in the Christian sense (sacrificing oneself for the other, enemies, etc.) and truthfully held up to good values. And on the other hand, there have been whites (e. g. Santer) who would eliminate anyone in pursuit of greed and vain fame.
This book teaches great values that seem to be fading out from our cultures. And they're universal. Anyone from any culture will become a better person if they adopted them.
Unity.
Courageousness.
Chivalry.
True Friendship.
Virtuous heroism.
These values are showcased in characters in the book regardless of their skin color or ethnicity. The story, in a sense, communicates the essential truth that your skin color is the MOST IRRELEVANT part of who you are. What matters is your values and character.
That might also be why I found the Ave Maria element throughout the story so intense. To witness Winnetou's quiet conversion to Christianity was heartbreaking in a way. He adopted the "values of white men" not because they were shown to him by whites, but because they were GOOD and morally correct values (self-sacrifice, killing only in defense, the rejection of vendetta...).
Winnetou III is a brilliant book and a perfect closing of the trilogy. May's remarkably gripping narration in combination with beautiful sceneries and good values taught by the characters makes it a book worth reading for every generation.
There are several reasons why I think this book is brilliant and that EVERY boy should read the Winnetou trilogy.

What made me stick throughout the entire story, is May's narration style. I LOVE travelogs (even fictional ones). Winnetou III doesn't follow the traditional novel structure. It's essentially a story built-up of several episodical chapters that make up one epic western adventure.
I sincerely doubt whether I should believe in the generally accepted view that Karl May has ever actually been to the United States. In the book, he describes the United States in such a profound geographical and also cultural detail. I know that he heavily romanticized the topic of Native Americans in the United States. Yet his descriptions of places, cultures, and peoples seem to be so realistic that it's hardly possible that a man with such extensive knowledge in the 19th century would be able to write a piece like this without seeing it live.
Karl May is a perfect Old Shatterhand. The way he leads the reader through his "travel" notes can draw the reader to the plot COMPLETELY.
I haven't read many books about Indians that were originally written in the German language. Yet I dare to say that this one is one of the best thanks to its popularity not only in Germany but also in other European countries (like my native Slovakia). I read a Slovak translation from 1965 which still keeps pretty solid popularity even in the 21st century.
VALUES THE BOOK TEACHES
Starting with the first book of the trilogy up to this final dramatic piece, the series in general deals with a rather complex topic - the relations between Amerindians and white Americans (or whites in general). The book sometimes seems to be a little spoiled with some incorrect, generalized narratives - The whites came to the New World with a sweet smile on their lips, and the reds greeted them with open arms. This was simply not true in many cases.
But then, May answers it with a view that still many won't agree with.
There were both good and bad guys on BOTH sides.
You had American Indians who were brave and friendly like Winnetou (in the story though, he struggles with moral issues that he notices in German Americans). On the other hand, there were Indians who would sexually assault, torture, and murder women and hold children captive whenever they invaded other tribes - The Comanche tribe for example (not explicitly in the books, but it's a historical fact)
There were white men like Old Shatterhand who behaved heroically in the Christian sense (sacrificing oneself for the other, enemies, etc.) and truthfully held up to good values. And on the other hand, there have been whites (e. g. Santer) who would eliminate anyone in pursuit of greed and vain fame.
This book teaches great values that seem to be fading out from our cultures. And they're universal. Anyone from any culture will become a better person if they adopted them.
Unity.
Courageousness.
Chivalry.
True Friendship.
Virtuous heroism.
These values are showcased in characters in the book regardless of their skin color or ethnicity. The story, in a sense, communicates the essential truth that your skin color is the MOST IRRELEVANT part of who you are. What matters is your values and character.
That might also be why I found the Ave Maria element throughout the story so intense. To witness Winnetou's quiet conversion to Christianity was heartbreaking in a way. He adopted the "values of white men" not because they were shown to him by whites, but because they were GOOD and morally correct values (self-sacrifice, killing only in defense, the rejection of vendetta...).
Winnetou III is a brilliant book and a perfect closing of the trilogy. May's remarkably gripping narration in combination with beautiful sceneries and good values taught by the characters makes it a book worth reading for every generation.

Mocne zakończenie dla bardzo przyjemnej trylogii. To lekka lektura, ale mistrzowska w swej kategorii. Czyta się bardzo szybko.

Diese Trilogie ist sowohl schön, traurig als auch spannend. Mir hat es viel Vergnügen bereitet, diese Bücher wieder zu lesen, da sie ein so wichtiger Teil meiner Kindheit waren - und dieses Mal konnte ich sie so lesen, wie es der Autor vorgesehen hatte. Natürlich kann man wirklich erkennen, zu welcher Zeit diese Bücher geschrieben wurden (sie entstanden zwischen 1860- 1900, was hier als Warnung über den Inhalt verstanden werden soll) und man kann erkennen, dass sie nicht als Bücher, sondern Kurzgeschichten für Zeitschriften etc. entstanden. Allgemein eine schöne Leseerfahrung - obwohl das letzte Buch mein Herz gebrochen hat.

Of course, you can really see how long ago these books were written (they were written in between 1860- 1900, which shall serve as its own content warning) and you can see that they were originally intended not as novels, but short stories published in magazines etc. But overall, an enjoyable reading experience - even though this last book is especially heart-wrenching.

Saya membaca sekuel Winnetou ini ketika saya masih di bangku SD. Saya masih ingat sekali ketika Ayah memberi buku ini kepada saya. Ayah bilang kalo buku ini adalah buku cerita favoritnya dimasa kecil.
Saya baca buku kesatu, kemudian lanjut buku kedua, dan ketika masuk kebagian buku ketiga, di bagian ketika sang Winnetou mati tertembak pada saat perang perebutan harta, saya pun menangis. Karena masih kecil, saya pun masih berharap bahwa pada akhir ceritanya nanti si Winnetou akan hidup kembali. Tetapi ketika menutup lembar halaman buku terakhir, ternyata tidak ada cerita bahwa Winnetou hidup kembali. Saya pun kembali menangis.. merengek.. dan memaksa Ayah saya untuk memberikan saya buku ke-empat, tapi buku ke-empat itu tidak ada. Hahaha...

Membayangkan Padang savana yang teramat luas, teknik membaca jejak, mengelabui tracker. Juga terselip kisah cinta yang tulus dan Persahabatan antara dua orang yang sebelumnya asing, kemudian menjadi saudara.
Di buku ini juga saya baru mengetahui bahwa bagian terlezat dari Grizzly itu adalah daging pada bagian jari-jari dan kukunya.

Третя і заключна частина пригодницької трилогії «Віннету» німецького письменника Карла Майя про пригоди та життя індіанського вождя апачів Віннету та його друга під прізвиськом Вбивча Рука.
Саме цим романом закінчуються пригоди німця на Дикому Заході. Мабуть автор є прототипом головного героя Вбивчої Руки. Але сам Карл Май вперше побував у Америці вже після написання та публікацій свого роману. Створити пригодницький роман його надихнули інші пригодницькі романи про Дикий Захід.
Знову Вбивчу Руку та ��іннету чекає багато пригод, небезпек та смертей. І все це на тлі колонізації Америки, ворожнечі багатьох індіанських племен між собою, а також у війнах, сутичках з блідолицими у боротьбі за свої землі,які закінчилися, нажаль, повним занепадом та знищенням індіанської культури.
Вся трилогія проілюстрована автентичними фотографіями із особистих фотоколекцій багатьох відомих фотографів кінця 19 та початку 20 століть. В основному це фотографії багатьох індіанців, а також світлини їхнього побуту, вбрання, полювання.
Вся трилогія мені дуже сподобалася і тепер є однією із моїх улюблених.

Ketika saya membaca buku ini, seri keduanya belum saya baca. Awalnya saya sempat khawatir kalau nanti saya nggak nyambung pas baca, tapi untunglah buku ini bisa dibaca tanpa harus membaca versi sebelumnya. Ada sih, beberapa bagian yang menyinggung buku kedua, tapi nggak papa kok, nggak material juga karena bagaimanapun kisah Winnetou ini selalu memukau di mata saya :D.
Dari judulnya udah ketauan kalau di buku ini Winnetou akan gugur, dan belum-belum saya udah sedih duluan sebelum baca. Tokoh utamanya emang Old Shatterhand tapi biar bagaimanapun Winnetou adalah nyawa buku ini, saya jadi menebak-nebak isi buku keempatnya seperti apa karena Winnetounya sudah gugur, Santer yang menjadi tokoh jahat utamanya juga sudah mati di akhir buku ini, yah semoga buku keempatnya tidak membosankan. Yang jelas saya sudah menetapkan seri Winnetou ini sebagai salah satu buku yang wajib saya koleksi :).

September 27, 2009kisah tentang gugurnya kepala suku apache yang gagah berani. tapi yang lebih menarik dari semua buku karl may adalah daya imajinasinya yang tinggi tentang benua amerika dan jaman indian. padahal penulis sama sekali tidak pernah menginjakkan kakinya kesana!

I cried reading this one. Awesome book with enchanting story, mungkin aku memang lupa detail ceritanya tapi aku masih ingat perasaanku waktu baca buku ini. Bagus sekali.
