Original modern thrillers with a flavour of Ancient Rome

I’ve read the first three books in this series and am pacing myself, as I know I’ll enjoy the next ones just as much.
If you’re an avid reader like me, you binge and then get jaded with the ‘same old’ and need something different to clear your palate. The Roma Nova series is different! Modern thrillers set in an alternative world, they develop in maturity along with the main character, Karen, who becomes Carina as she accepts her patrician Roman birthright. Or rather matrician, because this Roman society is based entirely around the women as power-holders. This neat twist has many consequences in how Roma Nova is organised and I love the way Alison Morton has fully realised this society. I believe completely in the world she has created.
Carina’s military training and the competition between adrenalin-driven soldiers is also totally realistic, while adding excitement and suspense. My favourite part so far is when Carina goes under cover in gangland and has to use all her training to come out alive – and changed. She reminds me of Katniss Everdeen in her gutsy, physical approach to survival, but the series allows her to develop and interact with the powerful, mature women in her society.
Carina’s partner, Conrad, on the other hand, irritates me intensely. The political conflict between them offers some romantic / adventurous scenes but I’d be very happy if Carina gave him the boot.
I was confused when I started the first book because I expected historical fiction. It is NOT historical fiction and even the ‘alternative history’ tag is misleading. Then I realised that these are modern thrillers incorporating the culture of Ancient Rome (especially the second book onwards). If you know anything about Ancient Rome (as I do, from my Latin studies at school and university) you’ll appreciate the references. If you don’t, it won’t in any way spoil your enjoyment!
In the old days, this series would have gone on the Science Fiction shelf but categories are breeding like rabbits these days and who knows where Roma Nova belongs – it’s an original concept and a great series – try it!

TRUE ROMAN WAY SURVIVES THE FALL

In this alternate universe, the basic Roman ideal survive in Northern Italy. Tempered with some Celtic ideas, a strong group of Roman families survived the fall and has Imperium. Their country is as modern as any other, perhaps even a bit more....
Highest Society is matriarchal, but there is gender equality in all of institutions.
Their vigiles are better than their forebears, their legionaries are superb, but the Praetorian Guard sets elite a new standard!
Well written, you feel the soldier's point of view. Realistically gritty training and action, real thoughts, real entertainment for the reader! I enjoyed this immensely. SPQR on the 28th century since the founding of the Eternal City by the sons of the wolf. Vale!

COVID rescue

In this time of pandemic isolation the relief of finding an escape in the imagined world of ROMA NOVA was a lifesaver. I loved the books, plots, characters, the plausability of an alternate history, my thanks to the author for following her passion in writing these stories, it allowed for a few hours escape each day, BC

GREAT BOOKS, GREAT VALUE

I've reviewed all the books in this box set individually. Suffice to say, they were all page-turning thrillers and up there with the best books I've read. Buying them bundled together was great value, too.
