Chance for the Win

Rate this book
Chance wants more than a great life in the NFL...
Chance is the rising superstar quarterback for the Chicago Bears. He's talented, rich, gorgeous, and has an amazing kid. The only thing missing in his life is the one thing that could cause him to lose it all; a man to share it all with. He keeps telling himself to focus on the game, the money, and the lifestyle until he retires, and then he'll come out and find a man.

Manny needs the crazy job that fell into his lap...
His last children's book still hasn't found a publisher, and he can't find the right words for the one he's writing, but the bills keep showing up in the mail. Just when he starts to contemplate a life in a cubicle, a sexy, famous quarterback asks him to be the nanny for his son. The salary will solve all his problems. The kid is a dream to watch. But the biggest shock is when they start falling for each other.

Passion leads to problems...
When an old friend from Manny's past threatens to tell their secret to the press unless Chance gives him money, will it be the final straw that tears them apart, or will they work together to give themselves a chance for the win.

This is one of those reviews. One of those reviews which, before I began writing it, I sat here with my phone and my bluetooth keyboard and just wanted to heave out a lazy raspberry and move on. But I like to at least try to justify my high and low ratings, so here goes.

This is bad. Bad dialogue, bad characterization, confusing actions and interactions, unbelievable obstacles, no realistic conflict, lazy world building, and spots where the author forgot what he already wrote. Like when Manny wanted his friend to meet him at a coffee shop, but instead they met at his apartment, but a couple pages later, Manny's friend has left him at the coffee shop...

Why did Chance have a kid? When I read the synopsis, I figured he'd been in a relationship with a woman at one point, or he'd had a drunken moment of trying to be straight or something. But no. Chance's kid is adopted. This makes zero sense. Not only is Chance still fairly young, he's also always been single, and he's a professional athlete. What single, young, closeted pro athlete is going to adopt a kid? It would make it somewhat believable if Chance seemed to like kids, but alas, he doesn't even seem to like his own kid.

And Manny the manny? Come on.

Sloppily-written confusing nonsense. Hence, one star.

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

In this book we meet Chance and Manuel (Manny). Manny is a author trying to get his duel language children's book published. He has gotten rejection after rejection and realizes if this latest publisher doesn't want his book then he will need to find a temp job just to have food and a roof over his head. One day while sketching at the park this man sits next to him on the park bench while his son is playing. They get to talking and during the discussion Chance offers him a job as his son David's new nanny. This is not the job Manny was originally looking for but a chance to spend more time with Chance sign him up. If only everything was as easy as that first meeting.

The first time Chance sees Manny on the park bench he wonders if their is a chance he could possibly have a chance with this beautiful man. When he finds out he needs a job he thinks now here is the way to spend more time with him but not have to go public. Chance knows the more time he spends with Manny the more he wants but as a NFL quarterback he also knows going public is not an option for him right now. He always told himself for the right guy he would come out and tell the world just to be with him. However when Manny asks for just that a chance for them to be public Chance is afraid and just isn't sure. He wonders will he loose the man of his dreams over fear?

This is a great love story. It shows how stereo types will keep people from having something amazing. Sometimes you have to take a leap for love and this isn't just a gay or gender thing it is a love thing. I think that this is an amazing love story that will have you hooked from the first word to the very end. I had never read M/M books before trying Zach's second book. This author will have you seeing the love story not seeing the gender or whether these guys are gay or straight. Check out this book as well as others he has written.

Cute little football romance

I'm always happy reading a romance where one of the MCs is able to be out in the macho world of American Football, what a shame that isn't the real actuality for gay pro players.

Still, this is a sweet little story with only minimal angst and a sub plot involving an ex drug addict friend of one of the MCs who tries a bit of blackmail and it had a HEA which may not be realistic but would be nice to think could be.

There are annoying niggly editing and grammar mistakes but not enough to completely spoil things.

Chance is a single father and he's having absolutely no luck when it comes to keeping a nanny around for his son, it seems that once the nanny realizes that they don't stand a chance with Chance they quit. It's a terrible situation but Chance really needs someone to be there for David when he's traveling for games. While at the park one day Chance and David meet Manuel/Manny after a conversation Chance hires Manuel to care for David. While this was a quick hot read I really wish it was longer, I would have loved more character background. Especially since there were a couple of things that threw me off in this book and the biggest one is how did Chance come to adopting David? It was never discussed just mentioned that he was adopted.
I enjoyed this book and it's a solid start to the series, it's also the first book that I have read by Zach Jenkins. I'm off to read the second book in the series Game Changing Drive.

Manny, who had a real aversion to being called "Manny" which was ridiculous and the way he told people and made such a big deal about it was kinda ridiculous. David was cute, but he was just kind of a afterthought, the story wasn't revolved around him or anything, there wasn't a cute aspect of the child Manny took care of and Chance loved so much...
I dunno, the whole thing just seemed so .... juvenile to me, like these weren't grown men but unsure teenagers, the way they spoke to each other, the way Manny gave Chance the ultimatum out of the blue when he knew from the begninning that they'd have to be "discreet" then he got mad that they had to be and was kind of a jerk to Chance when he talked to him again... I was like, am I missin where things were supposed to have changed cuz I don't remember anyone ever talkin about it?

And the drug dealer friend, I totally thought was gonna try to kidnap David or something.... I knew the second Manny told him he babysat for Chance that he was gonna do something I just didn't think it was what it was. That was ridiculous too in my opinion.
I dunno, maybe i"m just in a crap mood or something, but I didn't get this one at all.

I should have loved this book, it had all the ingredients for a great story.....really likeable MCs, a closeted sportsman, a cute child, the promise of a good romance. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how good the ingredients are if the recipe is wrong. Key dislikes...Chance and Manuel have a major falling out and go there separate ways...no conversation is had, no airing of grievances or sharing of emotion, they meet at a game, hook up and all is great again......poor David, Chances little boy who he adopted as a baby (so we learn in one sentence and it is never mentioned again), I wanted to adopt him just so that someone could show his some affection! I usually love children in MM romance novels, but this little guy had no role other than providing Manuel with a job.......and can we talk about love? Actually, no, we can't, because I don't think it ever came up.....but a marriage proposal was made and accepted?!? This could have been so good. Two stars because they were actually nice guys and the cover is lovely.

I have actually read Zach Jenkins before and this book has a good story line and believable characters. I can understand Chance wanting to keep things quiet being a football player, but it is really hard to have a meaningful relationship like that. I love the fact that Manny is an artist and writes bilingual children's books. It makes his nanny job with Chance's son David so much better. We don't hear a lot about David, but the story is about Chance and Manny. Chance's brother, Steve, is a breath of fresh air. Their interactions are so believable and just like brothers can be. Manny's new friends are just too funny and help him when he and Chance break up. Chance is getting better about showing his emotions to Manny, but he still needs to work on verbalizing his feelings. I will continue to enjoy more of Zach's books as they come out. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Over all I enjoyed reading chance for the win. Manny was fun, loving and mostly caring, to friends and family. Chance is carefull, loving persons, he cares for his son and for Manny .
This story is about a man who is still in the closet, and to scared to come out. He plays NFL Major league football . But because of this he might and up losing Manny, But in the meantime Tayler a friend of Manny's tries to blackmail Chance. Do they lose everything because of the blackmail or does their love hold strong?

It starts off wonderful, but I found once it hit the half way mark, it was rushed. But still end off with a great twist. I would love to read more of Manny and Chance.
I was given this book, for a honest review. I would have bought it if I didn't. If you like sweet romance, this is the book.

Great story

I really enjoyed this story about an NFL football player and an artist of a children's book. Chance, the star quarterback for the Chicago Bears meets, by chance, a down on his luck artist who's talent has been turned down by one publisher after another. Chance offers Manuel a job babysitting for his son. Even though both are gay, Chance is buried in the closet due to his occupation . This read was short, yet each chapter was packed with so much. I love how this story focused on being gay in a professional macho sport. Chance for the Win left me with the hope that maybe someday, not soon enough, the stigma and barriers can be broken for any athlete who should be allowed to be openly gay and proud to be themselves, as much as they are with the sport they represent.

I loved this book, and could not put it down once I started it. Chase is the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears. Manual is trying to get one of his children's books that he has written published. Chase hires Manual as a nanny for his young son, but really wants a relationship with him, but only on the one condition that they never show any affection out in public. He does not want anyone to know that he is gay. This works for awhile, but it does not matter if it is a gay relationship or not, no one wants to be the big secret that no one can know about. This is a beautiful MM love story, and shows some of the social issues that can arise with a gay relationship. I received this book for free in return for an honest review, and it is well written with a wonderful story.

This was an enjoyable read. Chance and Manny meet in the park while Danny, Chance's son is playing. The two hit it off and Chance offers Manny s job as Danny's nanny. The feelings of attraction are strong between the two and they fight to keep things as just friends. But once Steve, Chance's brother gives him a little push in the right direction, things start to heat up between them. But Chance believes the only relationship they can have is hidden behind closed doors. Will Manny settle for that or will he walk away? Manny's friend Tyler think he can get money from Chance by threatening to go public about him being gay. Will this be the end to their relationship? Or is this the push that they need to take things to the next level?

Great story about love and sacrifices to be able to truly love another. NFL quarterback of the Chicago Bears has came out to is family but still is in the closet I'm the public's eye. Mammy will change Chance's ways of thinking but when Mammy can't take no more of hiding their relationship is when Chance will loose the one thing that he needs in his and is adopted son's lifem. But everything chances with an old friend and current druggy tries to blackmail Chance will be the whole turning point for the closeted star quarterback.

DNF at 32%. I don't have any significant complaints, I just could not get into it. I've got too many books already downloaded or in the queue to try and stick with one that doesn't hold my interest at all.

Chance is in the NFL and he's gay.....but he's in the closet. He meets someone that he really wants to be with, but only if it's discreet, after all he can't ruin his career. He ends up ruining the relationship instead. Sweet romance.
