**Beware of spoilers, particularly if you haven't read Book One, Dare, yet.**

Deny is the fantastic ... absolutely heart-wrenching ... sequel to Dare. This is no fluffy tale, my friends; but even so, you don't want to miss THE BLADES OF ACKTAR series! It's unique fantasy telling a powerful story.

Leith Torren, now promoted to First Blade, is within the enemy line, caught up in a web of lies. Renna Faythe is hiding again; struggling with her lack of faith. Though they've already been through untold horrors because of King Respen, much more is ahead of them. Adventure. Trial. Romance. Terror. Who will withstand the tests? Who will come out alive? And is there any room for young love in this perilous time?

Once again, Tricia Mingerink swept me away to the fantasy land of Acktar. Danger lurks, hiding in the shadows as the Blades - King Respen's trained assassins. Secrets are uncovered ... trust broken. Faith is tested severely. And in the midst of the dark chaos, romantic love blossoms. Eep! <3 It was beautiful, terrifying, amazing, and heart-rending all in one!

Leith Torren is like ... the best assassin-turned-hero ever! ^_^ And though he found faith and redemption in Dare, he still hesitates to embrace life. He's kind of torn. In this book, I think we see even more of the dangerous side of him. It's exhilarating, but also very grim. But he's just gallant, and wonderful, and quite ninja-like! *grins* Deny has me hoping and cheering for Leith more so than ever. But ... Poor guy. *hugs him* *tears* (So much to process as I think back over everything that happened in order to write a review!)

Renna is definitely a favorite character. Her struggle is so real to me. I can relate. And I've thought about some of the situations she's forced to go through ... and wondered how I would react. With strength from Him? Or paralyzing fear? I LOVE her journey. <3 It's hard. Harsh in the deepest sense of the word. Agonizing even. (I told you this wasn't a light read! It's very deep, real, and thought-provoking). But in the end, it's so beautiful. Even as it hurts, there's this crazy, beautiful, unfathomable hope. Reach out and catch hold, Renna! And never let go! But yeah. Renna is a great character. So real and relatable. I must admit, I'm slightly concerned about the direction this series is going ... (Eeek! Tricia, how can you do this to us?? *wink*) But I'm sooo excited too! Very much so rooting for dear Renna!

And Brandi!! She brings humor, life, and laughter! A splash of color amidst the dark of fear and danger. I love how she lightens the story up here and there, and ... I just love her. *smiles* Was getting a bit worried at one point ... But Brandi is Brandi. She has a beautiful faith, and her Lord holds her securely! ^_^ Can't wait to see more of her journey too! *Thinks about the end of Deny* ... Oh, Brandi!!

And the other characters, fabulous as well! I'm particularly curious about Martyn. Hmm ... And Jamie!!! I love him! *grins* He's hardened, yet still innocent-of-sorts, and awkward, but sweet. <3

The romance that was hinted at in Dare advanced into something quite obvious and sweet in this book. All the Leith and Renna moments!!! <3 <3 *fangirl squeal* It was all so adorable and swoon-y. And tender and a bit uncertain. Renna's reactions and thoughts concerning her feelings were realistic. Really enjoyed that! It's not instant-love or perfect; but it's perfectly lovely! ^_^ I can't wait to see more. Beautiful love story unfolding! But lot's trying to get in the way of it! Eek!
On the romance note, it was definitely a step up from Dare as for content. But clean, sweet, and suitable for the Young Adult or New Adult audience.

So remember the bit about Deny not being a light read? There's quite a bit of violence and gory detail in this book. Some scenes are pretty bloody ... even if they're not as dire as they seem. So big cautions to anyone squeamish. There are some pretty brutal executions touched on too.

It was intense. And heavy. At one point, my heart felt like a rock in my chest; pain gathered, tears brimming. But, it brings across such a deep, meaningful message to us Christians. Faith, even in fiery persecution. Perseverance, even unto death. What a journey. Whew. For a moment, I was wondering if everything was going to crash to an end ... but the close of Deny promises more exciting and profound adventures to come in Book 3! I can hardly wait!

So yes. Epic and thought-provoking. A series for fantasy lovers. And even if you don't like fantasy, you should still give THE BLADES OF ACKTAR a try. Non-magical. Great fantasy world. Poignant Christian themes. Incredible characters. Sweet romance. Action, adventure, danger ... And tears. And hope. And holding your breath; simultaneously terrified and thrilled for the next book! *grins*

I received an ARC of Deny from the author.

Tricia! How could you hurt my heart so?! Oh the torture! Loved it though! Full review below.

Ever since I read Dare and fell in love with it, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series. Of course, that involved waiting for it to be published. When that time came, I jumped at the chance to get an advanced copy. Let me tell you, from the moment I started reading it, my stress levels went through the roof. I was so nervous for the characters! Tricia did a great job in creating tension that kept growing and keeping me on the edge of my seat all the way up until the end. And yes, the book even made me cry, which doesn’t happen often. guy-in-black-hood-quote1

The thing I adore so much about these books is the hero, Leith. If you love broken, noble heroes as much as I do, then these books are for you. He’s in my list of top favorite fictional characters.

I can hardly wait for book three! Especially considering the ending. I can’t imagine what is going to happen next. I just know the next books in the series are going to torture my emotions and stress me out, but I mean that in the best possible way. I love books that grip you and drag you right into the heart of the story. And for all you who ask me how I can be so mean to my characters, rest assured, I’m getting a taste of my own medicine. ;)

If you haven’t had a chance to start this series yet, I highly recommend that you do so!

I received this book free from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Oh. My. Goodness. This book was amazing! I think it was even more amazing and intense than "Dare", if that's even possible.

"Deny" starts off right where "Dare" ended. And, even though "Deny" doesn't start with Leith getting seriously injured, it still has a pretty interesting start. We get to see a bit more of Leith's life as a Blade and his responsibilities to King Respen as the First Blade.

In this book, we get to meet this amazing young man named Jamie. Let me just say that I loved Jamie from the start. I thought he was the cutest thing and loved him even more when we learned a little bit of his backstory. *hugs Jamie tightly*

We also get to learn a bit more of Leith's backstory, which was amazing. *smiles* I love backstory, and his is, well, tragic, as you probably already know. But we get to learn more about his mother, which was really cool.

There are also quite a few cute Brandi and Renna moments. *cheesy smile*

*swallows down fangirl attack* Sorry. That was a close one. *clears throat* There were a ton of perfect fangirl moments. Aaaand I think I'll just leave that one for you to think about. *smiles evilly*

Now the last half of the book, like Dare, is the part of the book where you won't want to put it down. Just warning you. Procrastination will seem like the only option in these times. The last half is really intense. Yeah. I think I'll just leave it there.

And you might just want to have some chocolate handy. Just a warning.

A review? However can I write a review in this, this, the STATE!!! *lunges for book three*

*~* UPDATED REVIEW. 10/26/16 *~*

*Minor spoilers for those who haven't read Dare.*

When I signed up for the blog tour of book three, Defy, that included an ARC copy of the book. At which time I realized that (ahhhh!!) I hadn't read this one yet! O.O So, because it was however long until the blog tour, I ordered a copy of this book from Ms. Mingerink herself (yes, it's signed). Unfortunately, this is still the only paperback book of the series I have (wedged right there between Anne of Green Gables and Jonas & Olivia). But I'm hoping to change that soon. ^_^

I sped through this awesomeness in four days this May. Okay, okay, so that's not *that* fast. BUT. It was pretty good considering all that was going on at the time. XD I also dove right into Defy minutes after I finished this one. Thankfully, I didn't have to endure another cliffhanger...not for long, anyways.

The resistance-y stuff in this one is great as well. With Shad, Leith, Renna, and Brandi's disguises...gahhhh, I loved that part so muchly!!! ;)

As with the other books, I loved all the characters. Leith...I mean, I even love his name. I enjoyed watching him change through all of the books. :D For some reason I didn't mention Shad in my review of Dare, but I really do love him. He and his girlfriend are super cute. <3 And Jamie! Another cinnamon roll character to be sure. :)

Like, I mentioned before, this one ends on a dreadful cliffhanger too. Like, really Leith?! How COULD you?!? Okay, I know, she told him to. BUT... *cries* It did give a lot to the story though, and open some doors for a lot of stuff that happened in Defy. So I loved that. :) Bring on the tension and pain. I can totally take it... xD

(As with Dare, I would give a few cautions for this one. There is some darkness – I mean, we're fighting really bad dudes here. And like one murder. Kidnapping... But I would say pre-teen and up. :))

Another 5 star!! :D

Oh. My. Gravy.

This book was even better then the first! And the first was seriously good!!

Tricia is such a talented author! She had amazing ideas, puts them down on paper (or computer??), and writes them out beautifully for all of us to enjoy.

In other words, amazingness!! Like, read this right now! Well, of course after Dare. ;)

Ooh! There are so many great characters!!

Such a great character to fangirl over. :) And what he has to go through in Deny! Oh! Hard stuff! But it just makes him more fangirl worthy. XD

And then there’s Renna. She’s such an amazing character! Tricia did a wonderful job with her! And oh!! Chapter 42!!! It was so heart-wrenching, I think I started to cry!!

And there’s so many other characters I love, but I don’t want to make this post super long. :)

But Brandi, she’s always so blunt, and straight forwards. She walking entertainment.

Shad. He gives me a million heart attacks by some of the things that he does.

Martyn? I just really like him. :)

Oh! So good!! And yet, terrible (meaning, it made me cry!!!!!)! But why, Respen? Why chapter 42???

There weren’t any problems for me! This book was completely awesome!!

This did have a bit more violence, and it described it more then in the first book. At parts it made my stomach a little queasy, but it just helped me with falling even more in love with the characters. :)

But if you have a weak stomach, just be warned.

I want to read this to Trevor (my ten year old brother). Though when I do, I might not read all the detailed in some of the deaths and such.

Overall, I LOVED this book! I highly recommend this!!!!

It was amazing Tricia!! Congrats on the release!!

No. No. No. It could not have just ended like that. No way! I need the next book now! Alright, let me just say that this book was totally and utterly incredible.

Leith Torren has now been promoted to First Blade from Third Blade. Now he must be more careful, because King Respen will have an closer eye on him. He is in even more danger than he ever was before. How long will these lies hold? How long will it be before he trips up? For Renna Faythe, it has been a long time since she felt safe. Recently Leith made her feel that way. But now he goes away and puts himself in danger. Will she ever get the courage, that everyone else displays? She feels the need to be something more. But what?

This book was so intense. I mean intense. I pretty much panicked a few times. Scrambled to read more, but from how many pages I had left I knew, I knew, that it wasn’t going to end well. Then for a moment I had hope of a great happy ending. But it was absolutely crushed, though still so amazing. Sometimes books with unhappy endings are the best ones. I think this book fits that category. I did love the ending, but now I have to wait forever before the next on comes out!

Apart from all of that, the book was really well done. It started off right where it left off from the book before. I was sucked in from the beginning. The relationship between Leith and Renna is so sweet and they become closer to each other. Renna grows dramatically in this book. Leith, oh my goodness, is so great. He learns that he can’t save everyone.

The story progresses so fast. There is not a dull moment. Nothing seems to go absolutely right. There is adventure, life threatening danger, fights, and more danger. I wasn’t calm at all while reading this.

This book is for all fantasy lovers. It was so good. I can not tell you enough how good it is.

5 STARS. WHAT ELSE COULD I HAVE GIVEN IT? HOW HAVE I NOT READ THESE BOOKS UNTIL NOW?

But then, if I had read them earlier, I wouldn't have had all four readily available and thus would have had to suffer through that cliffhanger at the end of this book. Because HOLY COW. HELP.

There will be much shouting and flailing in this review.

Tricia Mignerink is a cruel author. She's terrible. The pain she inflicts on Leith, my baby, and on Renna my poor innocent little girl, and on Brandi, who should never suffer, and on Shad and the others... just ARGH.

The characters in this one were amazing! I fell in love with Leith in the last book (and yes, I mean that literally, although I still ship him with Renna SO MUCH) and he has not disappointed me yet. I sit here fangirling as his epicness just completely drives this narrative. He's the most wonderful male lead I've encountered in a while. (If you wanted to know who some other male leads I've loved like this are, think Janner Igiby, Leonard/Lionheart, Aragorn, and Prince Kai. I'm saying that Leith is just as epic and amazing as them.)

Then there's Renna and Brandi. I, personally, would like a chance to have some of the next book from Brandi's POV (which the blurb for the next one seems to promise! I can't wait! Arghh!) because I want to know if she ever struggles the way Renna does in wondering if her faith is real. Poor Renna. I relate to her so much. She's so quiet and brave, her struggles are so real, and she has so much crashing down on her all the time. She's not perfect! Hallelujah! But she's still amazing.

There's a new character in this book: Jamie. OH MY WORD I LOVE THIS KID SO FREAKIN' MUCH. He's the sweetest little thing. I think I spot a new ship on the horizon heh heh....

Speaking of ships: YASSSSSS. This one. I need it to be a thing. Like today, please. They need to admit how much they care about each other. Because they do. Halllppp.

The plot was terrific. Every time I thought I could relax, Tricia would spring something new on them. Like at one point I was like, "Wow, things are going really well for [spoiler] and then ALL THE EVIL IN THE WORLD CAME CRASHING DOWN ON THEM. This is good writing, people. This is writing that makes you scream and shriek and flail and cry and rip your hair out.

I feel like I should mention the cliffhanger, but AHHH. I literally flipped to the last page on my Kindle, turned the page, and started shrieking. My mother will attest to this fact. I was convinced that there was a mistake because HOW COULD THAT BE THE END???? WHAT EVEN?!

I will complain that there was a little more violence than I might have liked, portrayed more graphically than I'm always comfortable with. But it was depicted as evil and wrong and the good guys were not going around killing people. Except Lady Lorraine. My word. That woman... *simultaneously laughs hysterically and flees*

Now for a massively spoilery part that you should not by any means open unless you want to have the whole book ruined. If you don't than skip the next paragraph. PLEASE.

So in short this was a terrific book. Read it unless you don't like gratuitous violence occasionally.

Read it yesterday.

I would write something you could compare to a review, but I feel that it wouldn't do this book justice.

So, I will simply say that Deny repeatedly made me want to cry, laugh, and groan at the same time, and that it is the best Christian fantasy that I have ever read through within 24 hours. There are some very heart wrenching, beautiful, and sad moments that made me love the characters, and sympathize with them like you wouldn't believe.

I had every right to be afraid!! Okay?? EVERY RIGHT!! AND I'M STILL NOT OKAY OVER HERE!! BOOKS ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE HAPPY ENDINGS!!!

*coughs* Let me try and do this reviewing thing, shall I? Well for starters I am once again amazed at Tricia Mingerink's ability to entwine such truth into this highly suspenseful series. I am so encouraged and inspired. This book deserves to be set in a fancy library, where it is the main event and every publishing company in the world wants to have the privilege of Publishing her work. Just saying . . . he he he.

I am not ashamed to admit that there was some extreme freaking out on my end. And I will also point out that I've NEVER been so scared of a book's ending in MY LIFE!! I didn't pick the book up for 2 days after that, which is extremely rare for me. It lived up to all my expectations and even exceeded them twenty fold. It did not disappoint.

Description ~ It was well done. Average in certain scenes with the fight becoming more present, and nicely crafted in others. In my opinion she could have spent a lot more time in the details ( because that's me ), and used some bigger words to get more feels or vibes across, but I am pretty particular when it comes to this section.

Romance ~ Perfect. Founded on God and the attraction grows slowly, like a relationship should advance! Need I say more?

Content ~ Well.... let's see....battles, blood, multiple death scenes, fighting scenes, war, executions, etc. It is, after all, a suspenseful but gory series. >.< xD Some parts I could do without!!

Characters ~ I could rant forever!! So deep and relatable! How do I get across the the fact that they are like REAL people? With REAL problems and difficult relationships!! They are strong ONLY in the Lord and their faith is tested in REAL trials, not some fantasy or fake difficulty. They were so inspiring and I can't help but wonder if Tricia Mingerink has read Martyr's Mirror. . . ?

Leith ~ AHK!! I am in physical pain!! He was so perfectly amazing!! *screeches* His dependence on God, his failures, his warrior abilities, his mental block, his compassion, his cunning!! I want to believe that more men like this will arise in our world, whether people think it impossible or not. Men who's personality shines through in everything, but at the same time they serve God with a passion and love no one can understand.

Renna ~ Yes, I may have criticized her at certain points. May have judged her rather than feel sympathetic, but then I can't help to wonder . . . Would I do the same thing? I have connected to her so strongly!! She deals with things that are REAL problems in my life and I'm taking courage from this book. Her fear and love, her faith and dependence . . . her struggle!! I just love her realness!! If characters aren't relatable or understandable then their garbage. ;)

Brandiline ~ I can't say how many times I clapped or cheered her on, but God is certainly using her!! I love this girl so much!! Her faith is encouraging, and supportive!! I love how both girls take turns supporting each other . . . emotionally at one time to faith keeping the next and they don't even realize, but God is holding them together!! Her character development is so unique, and I appreciate her personality.

Jamie ~ *flails arms* I see a ship coming!! I SEE IT!! I love this new addition.... and hopefully he will help Leith out in the next book! His own personality is so realistic and I found myself sighing at times and cringing at others, especially his killing thing. I appreciate his fiery but timid demeanor.... if that even makes sense. xD

Maryten ~ ( isn't that his name??? Somebody tell me! ) Am I the only one holding out faith that God with work through Renna and reach him??! I want to ship him with somebody!! *sobs*

Favorite Scene : (( **spoilers** )) Probably when Renna + Brandiline started singing with all their villagers who were getting executed!! It was like a sad but happy scene!! And I nearly cried while smiling. My emotions were so complicated and twisted!

Overall ~ LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!! Now I can go grab the next book because I already bought it!! *taps forehead* Thank you, I'm not stupid. ;) I've read a couple books in my lifetime. Tricia Mingerink did a wonderful job, and I can't thank her enough. How do you get across deep feelings without fangirling all the way through??? I know I can't . . . xD ^.^

Recommended to ~ Those who have read Dare and who have Defy on hand. *weak laugh* O.O You don't want to read this book without the 3rd one on hand. Trust me. Anyone who loves adventurous tales, with twinges of romance, and lots of buried truth. I wish Tricia was more well known. . . .

Before I stop ranting I have two questions. Are we going to DENY our faith when caught up in the persecution? Or are we going to DENY Satan and walk away victorious?

If we suffer, we shall also reign with him:
if we deny him, he also will deny us:
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful:
he cannot deny himself.

- II Timothy 2:12-13

“Deny” is the second book in the young-adult christian fantasy series, The Blades of Acktar. War had come to Acktar. And our characters suffer for it.

“A tingle swept down his spine. How long could he go on like this? Pretending his heart hadn’t been touched by God and nothing about him had changed?”

Leith is now the First Blade and with his new influence, he is in a position to aid the Resistance against the King. That does involve a lot of risk trying to be two people: Leith Torren, the King’s First Blade and Leith ‘Daniel’ Torren, a christian and member of the Resistance.

“It would be safer. She should listen to Lord Alistair. Surely he knew best.
But if she did, she’d be doing what she always did. Run. Hide. Let others make her decisions for her.”

Renna has spent most of her life in fear and letting others pull her along. Thankfully, we see that change towards the end of the book as she finally takes a stand.

I can’t imagine how people handled waiting for the next book with that cliffhanger.

“The problem with fighting for a cause is that the rules of the cause dictate how we fight. And if we sacrifice the cause to win a few battles, we’ll ultimately lose the war.”

I'm sad. I want book three. I NEED BOOK THREE!!!
I had originally rated this 5 stars, but after much painful deliberation, I decided to give it 4.5 stars. Why you ask? I love the Blades of Acktar series so much but the characters got into a lot of trouble in this one. The characters kept on getting into stickier and stickier situations and things didn’t really get better in the end. Sigh…I guess that’s a little like reality in a way… the main reason I gave it 4.5 stars is stated below.

Ahh book number two in the incredible Series The Blades of Acktar, where to begin? In book two, Leith Torren, a changed man goes back to his now despised life as a skilled trained king’s assassin. But this time not to be wielded as a pawn for the evil King Respen’s every wicked whim, oh no, not this time. He goes back only to act as a spy for the resistance. His every move is laced with danger but worse yet he grows to realize that the people he has grown to love are neck deep in intense danger too! He wants to save lives but if he slips up it means death and torture for more lives than just his own. Leith realizes that his cover will be blown at any moment, but until then he does his best to pretend he is still the same loyal Blade he has always been to those against the Resistance. The other Blades begin to grow suspicious of their new first Blade. The stakes are high. He must keep up appearances for the sake of the Resistance!

First off let me start by saying that Tricia Mingerink has real writing strength in the area of hooking and sinking you in. The action doesn’t wait till the end of the book, oh no, it starts at the beginning and it continues to keep you at the edge of your seat to the very end. Just how I like it, so many books seem to drag in the middle and when the second twist happens you don’t really care, cause you know everyone will be ok in the end. This is not at all how The Blades of Acktar is. You’re genuinely worried if your characters will make it out in one piece. At the end you are still not happy, you need more. More!! I loved watching Leith and Renna’s relationship grow, come on Leith just courting her for land sakes! You both like each other! Quick before it’s too late! Deny had way more perilous situations than Dare. All of your favorite characters lives are at stake. Brandi is still so lovable and I’m so glad she’s back! Jamie was great addition, I like him a lot too. Totally shipping Jamie and Brandie! I love how sneaky the Blades are, there like wraiths!

I loved Deny, but I have to add these frustrations. It almost seemed like the whole deception angle with Leith being a spy promoted the ends justifies the means. In some areas it was clear that some tactics of dishonesty or injustice were looked down upon.

Another thing I didn’t like… because it made me sad. In book one Leith goes back on and old promise because of his new found allegiance to the Resistance. Which I dealt with in book one, but my heart just died when the person Leith betrayed found out about it. I relate with the other guy more than Leith. What’s he thinking? You’re a good guy now, so you sold me out? It doesn’t really help the good guys case any. I would be bitter about that one.

With that said I will finish by saying this. I still highly promote this series. I still firmly believe that there is a lot more depth to this series than most mainstream Christian fiction. It’s highly unique and encouraging to read a book that unashamedly promotes the gospel message and gives a dose of fresh, clean, fantasy. Read it ya’ll! This series is so awesome and the characters I’m in love with! So four point five stars it is. This book is also crammed with adventure, excitement, redemption and forgiveness. War just muddles things I think, making an unclear line between good and evil.

You know when you find a series that takes you by the heart and won’t let go? This is one of those. I immediately fell in love with Leith and his journey in Dare and couldn’t wait to get my grubby hands on Deny. Once I got my eARC copy, I dove right in.

Deny picks up about 5 seconds after Dare ends and takes you right back on the wild ride. You slide right back in with the characters and the plot. All of the characters are great. Leith is my favorite, but I’m getting rather fond of all of the supporting cast. (Fingers crossed I didn’t just jinx a couple of them.)

Leith begins his mission as a double agent for the resistance and fights to maintain a balance between two lives. He learns that some friendships he can’t save and not everyone gets to live. He grows stronger in the new faith that Brandi and Renna helped him find. Renna is challenged in her faith and I love watching her grow in that respect.

This book has a little bit of everything. Action, nail biting suspense, funny moments (mostly provided by Brandi), and bits of adorable romance. Also a couple of scenes that are quite happy to punch you in the gut. This book challenges you to think about defending your own faith and I really love that. It’s not the type of story where people quote Bible verses and everything turns out all shiny. Plans go awry, characters doubt, and not everyone will make it through alive.

So if you love stories with strong Christian elements, great characters, and plenty of action and adventure, then I highly recommend this series!

Encouraging story about faith, loyalty, and strength. It’s by no means perfect, I don’t rate this particular genre with a fine tooth comb, I’m looking for the message it presents. These books - as a person of faith, are very inspiring. Brandi is my favorite, she’s got such a beautiful soul and a childlike faith that’s so lovable and endearing . Rennas growth in this one was fantastic. The internal battle she goes through speaks volumes. I love the questions these books make the reader ask themselves. It drops a challenge in one’s spirit. What would you do in a situation like this ? Would you stay true to your beliefs when faced with adversity and speak your truth without fear? Or would you deny who you claim to be? Kudos to this author 💞

A dramatic cliff-hanger ending to this second book in this very compelling series. Leith makes some tough choices here as he tries to keep everyone safe but his deceptions don't turn out as he hopes and the results are edge-of-your seat action scenes. Everyone is risking their lives and the stakes are high but God is praised anyway.

DENY BY TRICIA MINGERINK

When Leith Torren is promoted to first Blade, everything gets complicated. Suspicion is high, and he must keep up his cover to protect those he loves. But how many half- truths and lies will he have to tell to keep up this cover? One thing is for sure. This pretense can’t keep up much longer.

I’m still in shock so, if this turns out to be an utter failure of a review……I’m sorry. I just am super excited, and…oh well, never mind. It would turn into a rant.

Okay, this book was sooooooo great! I mean, what’s not to love? Everything about it is screaming “I’m an awesome book! Read me!” So, just go buy it. And read it. And then fangirl with me!

The start had me squealing stupidly in the back seat of our van. Then the end had me in utter anguish. I had read a spoiler and knew what was to happen, but the way it happened. *shivers* I just want to get some bubble wrap, and take all the characters and wrap them in it. Then hide them.

After I read Dare I couldn’t think of how Deny could be any better. I was wrong. Deny was sooooo amazing! I read Deny in one day. And usually when I read a book in a day. I want the plot to speed up. But for this book. There was never a dull moment. I didn’t skip a paragraph like I tend to do if some parts of books start to drag. Because no parts did! Tricia somehow manages to put lots of exciting parts in it, but not overdo it.

And the characters. I could really relate to Renna. I actually have kind of a hard time relating to characters sometimes, but Renna. I don’t know. She was so relatable. She had questions that I have, and it was just awesome. And Leith. Aw, I don’t think much needs said, he was absolutely amazing. I loved the relationship build between him and Renna. *fangirl squeaks*

I am finding that I enjoy Tricia's writing style. Apparently, Tricia has been mentored and these books edited by Nadine Brandes. I know several of the F & F community are fans of hers, although I have yet to read any Ms. Brandes books. I find her writing just flows for me and is super easy to read. It's a great multi-tasking read if that makes sense. While I'm doing other things, I don't feel like I need to focus all my attention to appreciate what is happening and to stay invested.... but... the last 1/3 of the book was different. The pacing is still the same but the stakes have been significantly raised.

Although this and the last book had lots of mild suspense, I actually felt they were cozy fantasies with a strong Christian message. However; the end of this book completely surprised me. Perhaps it shouldn't have, but Tricia raised the stakes significantly and I was not prepared. I absolutely will be reading book 3 now!

Even though I KNEW what was going to happen, I was still on the edge of my seat! My poor little heart still hurtsssss. Characters!!! Poor little abused characters!!!

*sigh*

Onto Defy. ;-)

~~~~~~
WOW WOW WOW. I am suffering a battered heart after reading this book. It was SO good!!!! Review coming soon!
I actually sat myself down and had a long conversation with myself about this book. I had just finished Dare and was trying to decide if I should wait until closer to the release of book 3 before I dove into Deny. Take a wild guess at what happened.
Plot/Storyline: 5/5
Even better than Dare, if you can believe that. Tricia Mingerink is so creative.
Characters: 5/5
There weren’t many new characters in this book…just returns of the old ones. No complaints here. I loved all the characters.
Writing: 5/5
Again, absolutely fantastic.
Dialogue: 5/5
Amazing, just as book 1.
Want-to-read-ability: 5/5
Ahem. Well, I read this book even faster than Dare. And I think I read Dare in two days. Need I say anything more?
4.5 ⭐️No second book lull here. The ending?! I need to know. The stakes are higher and I’m invested. Also the faith in this book was excellent and flowed beautifully within the story.
So much fun to read!
It's a trial to write this review before starting book three, but I'm afraid I'll confuse the books in my mind if I don't review book two first. So...
When Leith Torren returns "home" to the king's castle, he must confront the stark reality of the darkness his old life oozes. He's decided to pretend to continue his role as king's Blade. Due to the deaths of nearly half the Blade, Leith is now First Blade, and he must find a way to assume the responsibilities involved with rank without violating his new found convictions. The difficult situation drags him into a web of lies, and he knows it's only a matter of time until he trips.
In Walden, Renna faces few of the harsh dangers Leith does, but the constant threat is wilting her faith. The flash of courage she found when facing Vane seems to leave with Leith. No matter how many times her little sister tells her that God is good and will protect them, Renna can't see the evidence. It seems the more her faith wavers, the more it is attacked.
Acktar is twisting towards war, but the lives of the lead characters may spiral into chaos before the bulk of the physical fighting even begins.
