Yellow, Blue, Red, Green, Gray Happy, Sad, Angry, Calm, Scared A little girl helps a little monster figure out his feelings. It's all good until he has a new feeling.
"Mostruoso".
Wow! A fantastic book all about exploring emotions. This excellent story describes emotions as different colours! It tells the story of a monster who has got his feelings in a muddle. Then a little girl comes along to help the colour monster sort out his colours (emotions) so that by the end of the story they are all sorted out and jarred up. I love exploring this book with children and I can’t wait to share it with more children in the future. The pop up elements of this book are amazing and really add to the character and feel of the story. The monster looks like it has been coloured in by children so it’s easily relatable for children. In a classroom setting this book could help individuals explore their feelings but you could also use it with a child to help them understand their emotions. You could ask them to draw a colour monster of their own and colour it in the different colours for their emotions. You could take it one step further and use it as an emotion regulation tool for a child who could stick his/her colour monster on a chart that the teacher and the child has access to so that the teacher could easily see how the child is feeling.
I absolutely adore this book! It tells the story of a colour monster who seems to have got his feelings in a muddle. He soon meets a young girl and together they embark on a journey, exploring all the different types of emotions. It is a truly fabulous way of encouraging children to acknowledge their emotions, alongside explaining feelings they may or may not have already experienced. I will definitely be using this in my classroom. There is so much to be discussed and learnt together.
Lovely book about how our emotions link to different colours. Makes emotions more accessible, and the added pop up book is really good for a more exciting read.
Read again for PSHE and as we started one of the children believed it was going to be "cringe" when in actual fact they really enjoyed it and it was great for my PSHE lesson. _______________________ Honestly, what a fantastic book - 5*
I will be reading this to my class tomorrow for PSHE live learning. A word I didn't think I'd ever utter a year ago but here we are.
This book is great for understanding emotions and realising that all these emotions are important and how to deal with them.
A fabulous book which represents emotions through different colours and helps to sort out the strange feelings every person has. The pop-up aspects of this book make it really fun and engaging - perfect for KS1!
Brilliant book to develop children's emotional literacy and vocabulary. Used on placement to make children more aware of their feelings and how their actions can make other people feel. Would be a great resource for PSHE lessons.
One of my teacher friends was looking for this - I didn't have it, now I do! Great explanation of recognising emotions - in the simple way of colours. Love the sensation of the feelings each page evokes, the multimedia based artwork is so clever, just perfect for the target audience.
Idly read as my mother works with children and had it in the house. So gentle, so lovely, so calming and instructive for children whose emotions feel confusing and messy.
Setting – This story doesn’t really have a particularly obvious setting because it is supposed to be inside the child’s head. Characters – The two characters are the little girl and the colour monster, with the colour monster being the main focus of the book Plot – This story is interesting because there isn’t a huge plot, it is a story of unscrambling the colours (emotions) that the monster feels and identifying what they are so he can understand what colour he feels at one time. Language /narrative – The language that is used in the book is short, uncomplicated and straightforward to understand. There are no made up words, and there are very few words at all really. This is so that children spend less time focusing on what the words are and more on what they mean – this story is trying to explain a potentially new concept to children so it does not want or need complicated language to do that, it needs easily recognisable and understood words. It is told as an explanation from the perspective of the girl helping the monster. They are there to compliment each other, the pictures visualise the words to make the concept of emotions easier to understand, and the language puts the emotions in the pictures into words for children to use in their life. The children need to have been able to feel and differentiate their emotions to an extent. For example, you wouldn’t read this to a 2 year old with limited vocab who is only just experiencing some of their emotions for the very first time, but would to a slightly older toddler who can recognise but not always understand what they are feeling. The pictures are made from different painted/coloured/scribbled on pictures being placed on the page to make a sort of collage. They therefore look like they have been coloured/decorated by children, whilst still maintaining consistent and recognisable shapes made by adults. There are links to other books written about The Colour Monster encountering different scenarios and how he handles his emotions, or other books to do with emotions such as Ruby’s Worry. The patterns of the story are going through the individual colours and explaining what they are It would be perfect for a KS1 class, particularly in a PSHE lesson to open up discussions about feelings and how they affect us
The Colour Monster is a lovely book which helps to explain lots of different feelings children will experience. I think this would be a great book to use with KS1 children who may find it difficult to identify their feelings. The book could lead to a discussion about different feelings, how they make you feel and what can cause or help these feelings. The illustrations in the book have a child-like collage effect which is likely to be relatable to children. Children could create their own posters of their feelings, explaining them through images and drawings to help them explore and understand them better.
