Getting cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi and being rejected by his former Sithmaster Darth Sidious isn't going to defeat Darth Maul. In fact, it only makes him mad enough to take on the galaxy, with an army of Mandalorians!
The artwork is fantastic...resplendent without being ostentatious like in other comic serials I've read...but I feel that the dialogue and character interaction was lacking. Also, Darth Maul breaking out of prison in a matter of seconds just seemed kinda silly to me.
Still, it's a great buildup for the second comic...which I WILL be reading!
For all that was terrible with The Phantom Menace, at least we were given Darth Maul. Though he was given just minutes of screen time, he instantly became a favorite of mine in the series. Now, we have a comic that dives a bit into his backstory and shows the events that happened after Episode 1 (that’s right, HE IS STILL ALIVE). Dooku, Grievous, and Maul are the prominent figureheads of this issue and Sidious has a plot in place to destroy the witch responsible for Maul’s resurrection. Plus, Mandalorians. I MEAN COME ON.
Darth Maul makes a prison break! It's exciting! You will sit on the edge of your seat and the chair will tip over spilling you into the floor. That force is called gravity. Enjoy!
Now I know many people say that THE PHANTOM MENACE was a throwaway movie, but it gave us Darth Maul, and for that, I’ll forgive it a transgression or two. Darth Maul is probably my favorite Star Wars villain. Full of silent rage, a double-ended saber, the most acrobatic fighting style aside from Yoda…he’s just plain awesome. I was actually a little sad to see him meet the imminent villain end.
Thank goodness for Star Wars technology, though, which ensures that if you lose a limb…or half of your body…you can always just replace it with robot parts.
In this graphic novel, broken into four parts, Darth Sidious wants Mother Talzin, who is responsible for Maul’s resurrection. When Darth Maul escapes him, he retreats to his Shadow Collective army. The Sith hope that he will lead them to Mother Talzin. Of course, through all of this there are light saber battles, crossing, double-crossing, and everything else we’ve come to expect.
They’ve packed a lot into approximately forty minutes of graphic novel reading. Readers who haven’t watched THE CLONE WARS television show will have some catching up to do, and may find themselves feeling a little lost. However, anyone familiar with Episodes I and II should be able to keep up.
This book contains battle violence, but is otherwise clean reading.
Star Wars comic books do not get much better than this.
All star line-up of: 'Robot Legs' Maul, Grievous, Dooku, Sidious, Mother Talzin, the rogue faction of Mandalorian's that hero worship Maul because he is the wielder of the Dark Saber, and more.
Perfect balance between story depth, action, and I love the artwork.
I won't get my hopes up too high, because there has been zero mention of her... but if Asajj Ventress shows up it would just be the cherry on top of the cherry here. I just absolutely love the endless spiral of betrayals within betrayals in Sith culture. Looks like we are going to stay true and get a lot of that here. Again, would LOVE to see Ventress show up. We shall see...
If this series continues at this pace, this will be by far the #1 comic series for me thus far.
I have been meaning to listen/read more of the Star Wars Audiocomics, and this series following Maul was on my raider along with other series. I have to admit is an interesting character, to say the least, and if they had permanently killed him off in The Phantom Menace it would have been a waste. I look forward to seeing how the story progresses.
I have high expectations for the Son Of Dathomir series, this is one of my favourite characters of the Star Wars saga. My expectations in the 2017 comic Darth Maul were betrayed, it looks like my expectations this time will be met. The first issue was good in posing the base for a great story.
Reading this for completionism sake after Star Wars:The Clone Wars. The plotting is a little convenient, with Maul breaking out of prison pretty quickly, and the dialogue that can be bolstered by the delivery of the show's talented voice cast can seem clunkier on the page. There's also not really any thematic depth thus far. But the art is well-done and works to convey the action quite keenly in a more static medium.
Maul fighting in open battle, who would've thought!
After watching The Clone Wars and learning more about the origins and whereabouts of Maul, I became more and more interested in this character and bloody hell!, not only on the series but also on the comics they've managed to show the extent of Maul's capabilities way more than The Phantom Menace could ever.
Ooo excellent! I'm interested in where this goes. I'm currently watching Rebels and I see this black saber showcased, I'm definitely interested in learning more since it appears to be leaning towards being added to the canon. I could do without the terribly cheesy slogan on the front, but otherwise I'm excited for the next few issues.
I really like Maul's story. I followed it also on Clone Wars. I'm never disappointed. And of course I love Mother Talzin, so simply mentioning her anywhere makes me 'happy' hehe
I just began Reading comics, and have been a Star Wars fan since I was a kid. This book is well written and the graphics put you inside the book. A great opening to a story that can take you anywhere. I am going to buy book #2 of the series, right now.
One of the few good points of the prequels is Darth Maul. Looking cool and menacing. A little bit short but a good starting point for those of us that want to expand on lore.
