An expert on horror and sci-fi cinema (his books of film criticism include Nightmare Movies and Millennium Movies), Kim Newman's novels draw promiscuously on the tropes of horror, sci-fi and fantasy. He is complexly and irreverently referential; the Dracula sequence--Anno Dracula, The Bloody Red Baron and Dracula,Cha Cha Cha--not only portrays an alternate world in which the Count conquers Victorian Britain for a while, is the mastermind behind Germany's air aces in World War One and survives into a jetset 1950s of paparazzi and La Dolce Vita, but does so with endless throwaway references that range from Kipling to James Bond, from Edgar Allen Poe to Patricia Highsmith.
In horror novels such as Bad Dreams and Jago, reality turns out to be endlessly subverted by the powerfully malign. His pseudonymous novels, as Jack Yeovil, play elegant games with genre cliche--perhaps the best of these is the sword-and-sorcery novel Drachenfels which takes the prescribed formulae of the games company to whose bible it was written and make them over entirely into a Kim Newman novel.
Life's Lottery, his most mainstream novel, consists of multiple choice fragments which enable readers to choose the hero's fate and take him into horror, crime and sf storylines or into mundane reality.

This brilliant collection is full of stories that showcase classic characters of fiction and reality, along-with a horde of pop-culture references, all made special by Newman's writing. The tales are dark, witty, whimsical, chilling and fard-hitting.
My absolute favourites (excluding the tales which are present in other collections) were~
1. Angel Down, Sussex: This novella, a stellar piece of action involving the Diogenes Club, is unbeatably good. Why Titan Books has still not managed to compile this, along-with other pre RJ-tales of Diogenes Club into a solid collection, is a mystery.
2. Seven Stars: Involving almost all of the stellar cast whom we have come to see in Newman's work, this tale is truly an invaluable jewel (no pun intended).
The writings are followed by a delicious 'Who's Who' that acts as a precursor for the similar addenda present in Titan edition of 'The Man From The Diogenes Club'.
Recommended to all those who love Newman and his overarching creations.

Самой секретной и самой элитной спецслужбы Его Величества, ответственны за борьбу с темными силами.

“Семь звезд” – это сборник из шести новелл о том, как на протяжении двух столетий клуб “Диоген” сражается за безоблачное будущее Британских островов. Сражается с различной степенью удачности, без тотальных катаклизмов в недалеком будущем у них не обходится. “Буахаха! Сначала на планете умрут все собаки, потом вампиры, а вскоре после этого на ней не останется и людей”. Спустя пять минут после этих слов на планете не осталось ни одной собаки.

Надо отметить, что особой удачностью не могут похвастать не только бойцы “Диогена”, но и сам Ким Ньюман. Несмотря на высокий потенциал его задумок и возникающий время от времени “хеллсинговский” кураж, писателю не удается вытянуть на приличный уровень ни одну из своих историй. Каждая из них больше похожа на набор зарисовок для большого романа, чем на самостоятельное и полноценное произведение. И это чертовски обидно. Я много лет пытался найти написанные Ньюманом романы из цикла “Anno Dracula”, но теперь мое любопытство чуток остыло. Хочется верить, что для русского перевода издательство “АСT” выбрало далеко не самое лучшее произведение автора. (2007.10.19)

In this book, you'll find a chain of stories linked by a mysterious and malevolent jewel which has a negative effect throughout time. Many familiar names and faces appear, sometimes subtlely changed from their personas in other Newman books, but spending time with them is always a pleasure. From Ancient Egypt to the future, via several centuries, I found some stories more appealing than others, but was gripped and amazed throughout. As ever with Kim Newman, full of ideas, wonderful places and flawed, but deeply interesting characters.
