Dean Roberts is a sick, elderly man with just one precious thing in his life − his teenage daughter, Marisa. When she mysteriously disappears on a road trip across America and the police draw a blank, Kane and Lucy are hired to find her and bring her home. But as they retrace her last known movements they realize that she has been kidnapped – and that this this is no ordinary abduction.
When Kane and Lucy set out for Missouri to find a teenager who has gone missing whilst on a road trip across the States they soon discover that she has been kidnapped by a darkly sinister group whose victims are turning up dead – real dead. But what is the motive for her abduction? Her bank account is untouched, no ransom demand has been made, and a telephone call from the missing girl a few days after her disappearance only adds to the mystery. But as the body count mounts they realize they are in a race against time as they enlist the assistance of local law enforcement officers and friends of the missing girl in a desperate attempt to find her before it’s too late.
John Hemmings is an experienced criminal attorney and writer of crime fiction with a one hundred percent record as a criminal trial lawyer - not one of his clients has ever been executed...yet!
He graduated in English literature and spent five years as a post-graduate lecturer before turning to a life of crime - on the right side of the fence of course. Each of his books features Boston private investigator Mark Kane and his long-time companion Lucy.
Many of the stories are inspired by actual events and people the author has met and worked with during his career, but names and locations have been changed to protect the innocent - and sometimes the guilty.
On his website: www.johnhemmings.net you can read the first 5 chapters of each of his books in the Mark Kane Mysteries series (and even read the first 4 chapters of the next book in the series: 'Missing'. which is due to be published in approximately 6 weeks).
This is the second book by this author I have read, and certainly cements the idea that yes, you can write a mystery/crime novel without depending on visceral graphics and salacious sex scenes. An intricately woven tale that centres itself in the realities of a true investigation, lifelike characters that you warm to immediately and quality writing set this novel apart and above many of the similar offerings in the same genre. A lot of fun to read and certainly gets your brain ticking over. Still a wee bit confused about the whole Kane and Lucy dynamics - they're obviously relationship partners but why does he baulk at calling her his partner in the business? Highly recommended read.
Missing is the fifth book I've read in the series and shave enjoyed each one. My only complaint is I would like the main characters, Kane and Lucy, more developed. They really don't interact and Lucy has to practically ask for a compliment or recognition. They are friends with benefits but no sex scenes. I can't seem to get to " know" them and they sure do eat often. Overall, it is good, clean reading and edited very well.
This series is called "Mark Kane Mysteries," but I think of them as "Kane and Lucy," because Lucy is much more than just a sidekick. Together, Kane and Lucy banter, solve mysteries, and probably fool around, although that is suggested rather than explicit. The author is very careful to keep the prose "clean," and I greatly appreciate that. In addition, the mystery is always well-crafted and interesting.
Mark Kane & his assistant Lucy investigate a missing teenage daughter of a wealthy client. The last he heard from his daughter she was in Springfield, Missouri. Investigation begins and leads to a complicated discovery of a group selling body parts. Good plot, good characters. Fun read.
An entertaining story but it felt like something was missing. It lacked the element of excitement to make it five star book. It had a predictable ending.
John Hemmings writes detective novels. Kane and Lucy are a team searching for a daughter that did not call home for her father's birthday. The duo is tenacious and driven to find the truth and the subject of their search. In the genre of detective work, Raymond Chandler comes to mind. With the drinking on Kane's part and the snarky helpful comments by Lucy, the case is solved. For those who enjoy mysteries and a great working team, I would recommend this writer.
While the relationship between Mark and Lucy isn't all hearts and flowers, it's believable. She provides a steady influence and reigns in what looks suspiciously like an over fondness for drink. They work well together, finding Marisa and all her abductors.
If you are new to this series, I suggest you start with book one and read them all in order. Although each book can be read as a standalone, the characters carry over from book to book and some references are made to former cases. These are well written, clean stories that I recommend for anyone that enjoys a good mystery.
Wealthy teen sets to travel cross country after her high school graduation, when she suddenly disappears. Was she kidnapped or did she disappear on her own?
This is the fifth book in this series. It is a very good series for people who love a good mystery. Worth reading . I am on to the next book in this series . I recommend this series.
Another great story by this author. The characters are very interesting and the storyline runs without a hitch. The twists and turns leave you wondering if the first person you surmised is actually the guilty party, and just when you're saying YES. You discover you were wrong. Great mystery.
