DI Sally Parker is called to one of the best hotels in the area after one of the guests, Megan Carmen, reports her friend, Tina, missing.
Sally investigates Megan’s background when the woman reveals that she has just arrived from France and Tina is a woman she met on the Internet. Do genuine people truly arrange to innocently meet people they’ve only just met online? Or, in light of Tina’s disappearance, is there something far more sinister afoot?

When Megan Carmen travels from France to England to meet her internet friend, Tina, for the first time, she is excited and thrilled. They’ve hit it off online, and now they plan to spend the weekend together looking for new housing for Megan so that she can move back to her home country. The two young women find themselves experiencing a series of questionable events, culminating in the disappearance of Tina.
Web of Deceit: A DI Sally Parker novella. is disquieting and creepy. I thought that the plot was well conceived, but the quality of the writing didn’t quite measure up to that of some of the very fine thrillers I’ve read this year. However, given that it was a novella, the authors spun a pretty fine tale. I did wish that I could have seen more of DI Parker and her partner Jack. There was some wit in spots that broke up the gloomy mood somewhat. There’s a twist that I didn’t expect, which I rather liked. I’m thinking that there might be some parents out in book land who will want to share this story with their social media-addicted teenagers, just in case…
I bought this a little while ago, but was inspired to read it a couple of days ago after finding out about another author I knew, who turned out not to be genuine or what they seemed at all. It came as a huge shock to me at the time, so I thought Web of Deceit was the perfect book to read next, as it is about meeting an online friend in real life. I thought I may as well use a fictional novella to help increase my paranoia a little further.
I really enjoyed Web of Deceit. This story was surprisingly creepy at the beginning. I even jumped at my own shadow while I was in the middle of reading this. It was fast paced, sometimes rather tense, and there were a couple of moments I was gritting my teeth together and holding my breath. There was an interesting mix of characters too.
It also reminded me of a scary experience I had in Merthyr Tydfil a few years ago. I have promised myself never to return there again. I didn't realise places like that existed in real life, just in creepy horror films!
This is ideal if you fancy a quick read between full length books, and it certainly makes you think about some of those people you have met online but don’t actually know in person. Expect to feel a little more suspicious of online folk after reading this.
Web Of Deceit is a novella with trust at its heart. Megan trusts her new Facebook friend Tina, so much so that she comes over to England and lets Tina help her find her new UK dream home.
On the first night, Megan and Tina have a strange night at a hotel, with unsettling events happening and enough to leave Megan shaken. The two women move to a second hotel on the next night, but when Megan wakes up and Tina is nowhere to be found, panic sets in.
Megan is put in touch with DI Sally Parker, who leads the investigation into the alleged disappearance of Tina. However, things take an even more sinister turn, and not everything is as it seems.
As this is a novella, I can't give any more away without spoiling the plot. Sufficed to say, Web Of Deceit is a book that focuses on exactly that. The intricate webs of deceit which people weave effortlessly, with little thought for others.
It is a cautionary tale, forcing the reader to consider how well they know people, especially those who forge friendships with people they meet online. Social media is a shadowy place, where many people are not what they seem.
Web of Deceit is a well written story, with a well thought out plot. For me, it was a nice introduction to DI Sally Parker, who seems like a capable and intelligent character and I look forward to reading more about her.
I gave Web Of Deceit 4 stars on Goodreads. A well thought out novella, and a great intro to DI Sally Parker.
A great little novella by Tara Lyons and Mel Comley . A very fluid read where Sally Parker comes to the rescue . A story that got you thinking of social media friendships with a neat little ending . Loved it . Big 5 stars from me
I was given this book by the authors in exchange for an honest review.
I was dead excited to hear that Tara Lyons had collaborated with the fabulous Mel Comley (M.A Comley) on this novella and I knew that I would be in for a treat! What a great little read it was!
The characters of Megan and Tina immediately had me thinking of both these authors and I was curious as to how much of themselves had been injected into the creation.
The storyline was clever. I had thought at times that I had figured it all out but was pleasantly surprised at the end when all was revealed. There were some good twists which made it all the more interesting and certainly kept me hooked. I easily read this novella from cover to cover. I liked the premise of how the lies that formed the basis of the story were all intertwined and not easily unravelled.
It did seem ages, however, before DI Sally Parker made an appearance which is not usual. Although it fit the story and she and DS Jack Blackman (LOVE HIM) did capture my interest — I just wish they had been in the story from an earlier stage. Oddly, I was waiting for Carol (from the Justice series) to show up too! Shows how much I love Mel’s books! I want all the characters to mix and mingle like one big Justice/Parker series party!
What a great way to introduce Tara Lyons as a debut author too! I am certainly looking forward to seeing what Tara’s full novel will have in store for us if this was just a taster. And the cover…well..it is another winner!
So for a great little DI Sally Parker “fix” I would certainly recommend you get your hands on this book as you will easily read it in one sitting! Well done on another fab instalment of the DI Sally Parker series. I am looking forward to the next in this series. Available for pre order now and publication date is January 20th!
This is a DI Sally Parker novella written by Mel Comley together with emerging author Tara Lyons.
How much can we trust our online 'friends'? How much do we really know them?
Living a solitary life in France, Megan is persuaded by her online friend Tina to go back to live in the UK. After meeting up and looking at some homes together, the pair settle in a local hotel for the night where strange things take place. When the following day events take an even more sinister turn, DI Sally Parker is called in to investigate.
I loved the dark setting of the story, the sense of foreboding that emanates from each page. You feel that something terrible is going to happen, but what? I wanted to give a big slap to Megan for being so gullible. This book made me reflect on my own online activities and the 'friends' with whom I interact and chat with on a daily basis through my phone and PC. How much do I really know them? Do they actually portray a true image of themselves?
Well, this was a pleasant, intriguing and well-written novella that left me guessing till the end. I thoroughly enjoyed it and being very short and fast-paced I read it all in one sitting.
With thanks to the authors for an ARC of this book.
I love the DI Sally Parker series and it was great to get another fix of her even though she only features towards the end in the story.
The whole storyline is very current for todays world and has an underlying message in there that we could all take note of.
The author has actually teamed up with a new author on this novella but all the elements and the feel of the series is still very much there.
As it is a relatively short story it is quite difficult to go into the storyline to much without giving things away. All I will say is that what should have been a fun road trip for two friends turns out to be a lot more sinister.
It certainly will make the reader question what their online friends are like in person and if they are the same as the persona they give off online.
Many thanks to both authors for an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for an honest review.
Blurb - DI Sally Parker is called to one of the best hotels in the area after one of the guests, Megan Carmen, reports her friend, Tina, missing. Sally investigates Megan’s background when the woman reveals that she has just arrived from France and Tina is a woman she met on the Internet. Do genuine people truly arrange to innocently meet people they’ve only just met online? Or, in light of Tina’s disappearance, is there something far more sinister afoot?
My thoughts - Having just recently read Wrong Place and No Hiding Place by Mel Comley I was very excited to see she had teamed up with the lovely Tara Lyons to bring us this novella Web of Deceit. Although I don't know these authors personally we are all members of The Book Club of FB and I've seen how passionate they are about books and knew this would be a cracker and I wasn't disappointed at all.
Web of Deceit may not be a full length book but the authors have certainly packed it all in and nothing seemed to be left out, it all flowed nicely and told the story perfectly. I've kind of avoided novellas with the thinking that how can it possibly be as good as a full length book but I've just been proved completely wrong. This is a real can't put down book that I read in one sitting, I was hooked.
I found Megan quite annoying at the very beginning of her journey and at one point thought "just grow a pair" but she grew on me really quickly as the story unfolded and turned out to be a great character. I'm maybe reading to much into it but is there a possibility we could read more about Megan again? I do hope so.
A gripping novella, packed full to the brim and leaves you wondering how well do we know our Facebook friends ;)
Thank you to the authors and TBC on FB for the Arc. Just brilliant.
With thanks to The Book Club (TBC) and authors M A Comley and Tara Lyons for allowing me to read this novella in return for an honest review. Having lived alone in France for the last ten years Megan befriended Tina online. Their chatter got around to Megan moving back home to England and arrangements were made for a house hunting weekend. Megan was both excited and nervous of meeting her online friend but her fears seemed unfounded as they were getting along wonderfully. A country hotel overnight stopped the excitement and created fear after a strange series of events occur and they can't get out of there fast enough. Deciding to move onto another hotel things take a serious turn and now it's not just fear, it's real terror...Tina is missing ! Enter DI Sally Parker, a woman with a nose for unsavoury characters and knowing when things just don't seem to add up. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and DI Parker is a great character, a woman who wants to get things done. Strong minded and willing to go the extra mile to catch the bad guys, I really liked her. Looking forward to more
A friendship made on the internet, and a lifestyle change lead to a journey that becomes increasingly scary and testing. A gripping tale and a great concept. I am not going to rehash the synopsis so I will concentrate on the art of story telling. I enjoyed this short story but I felt it would have been better had it been longer. There was some mystery until the end but some of the surprise was lost due to the limited number of characters and scenarios. Having said that the writing was fluid, and so easy to read that it was no effort at all to finish in one session. I have read other tales of DI Sally Parker and her partner Jack and really like these people, but I didn't feel this was their best case, and in fact this doesn't quite fit somehow. I realise I am slightly out of step with other reviews here as I am not giving it the same very high rating but for me this was no more than 3.5 out of 5 stars. If you like short stories and/or DI Parker you will enjoy this.
I love Sally Parker and I love Mel Comley's writing so when Mel announced she was teaming up with new author Tara Lyons, I was nervous and excited all in the same emotion!
My nerves were totally unfounded as I loved it. It was that little dose of pure Sally Parker to tide me over until next time!
Having never read a novella and only recently read any adult short stories, I am in awe how authors can cram so much in to such a small number of pages. Web of Deceit is all of 70 pages but it felt like a lot more with the build up and then Sally's brief but tenacious investigation!
Many thanks to the authors for my advanced copy of this novella in return for my honest review.
Megan meets Tina on Facebook and comes over from France to meet up with her to look at houses. On their hunt a number of bizarre incidents occur and DI Sally becomes involved. At first Sally finds the whole thing hard to believe which is understandable as a reader I did too. A light hearted easy read which I read in a few hours.
I really enjoyed this novella written by Mel Comley & Tara Lyons, about two friends who met on Facebook and decide to meet up in real life, when Megan decides to move back to the UK, after living in France for many years. Strange things start happening when Megan and Tina start house hunting and have to stay in a couple of hotels, and Tina disappears on their second night. Di Sally Parker is called in to investigate after Megan reports Tina missing. Having read Wrong Place and No Hiding Place by Mel Comley, it was an honour to read this novella by this exciting new team and (I may be wrong) but I might have read a hint that this will not be the last we see of Megan Carmen. I highly recommend this novella to all crime lovers.
Many thanks to Mel Comley & Tara Lyons for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I received this as an arc from Mel herself in exchange for an honest review.
DI Sally Parker is called to one of the best hotels in the area after one of the guests, Megan Carmen, reports her friend, Tina, missing.
OMG. WOW. Absolutely fantastic read. CNPID. Read in one sitting. Had to find out if it happened how I thought it would. Nope. Wrong. Would never have thought that. I love DI Sally Parker. Wasn't sure about Megan at first. But she won me over in the end. Did not like Cleo from the start. Evil. Hope to see more from you two. This is a must read and I would highly recommend this book. 5 * although I would have given more 10*.
How many of us have said don't trust a stranger? But is social media different? Up until 3 months ago Megan had been happy with her solitary, artists life in France , but then Tina admired her work on Facebook they quickly became friends. Megan made the decision to move back to England and her new Facebook friend Tina gave her the confidence. But is she really who she says she is? Should we trust someone we have only met online? Great Novella by Tara Lyons and M.A Comley. Easy read, certainly a page turner and twists right up to the end.
Megan and Tina 'meet' online and become friends. When Megan plans to move back to England from France, they meet up in person to try and find Megan somewhere to live. Things quickly move from friends getting to know each other better, to a missing persons investigation.
At 70 pages long the authors (Mel and Tara) have done well to fit so much story in. I liked how Sally and Jack from Mel's newest series are involved in the investigation. On the other hand I took an instant dislike to Cleo, who I can only describe as odious!
All in all an entertaining novella. Well done Mel and Tara.
This is the first book written by M A Comley and Tara Lyons.
It's a short but gripping novella and I absolutely loved it.
This novella makes us really think about the people we 'befriend' on Facebook. Do we actually really know them at all ? It was a short, quick read and one I didn't want to end.
Megan Carmen, living in France, received a friend request from Tina Lloyd from England on Facebook even though they've never met and over the course of months they become such good friends, that Megan decides to move back to England and arrange to meet Tina so that they could go house hunting together. Right from the first night, strange things start to happen that doesn't feel right for Megan. Is she delusional in thinking that they are being followed? Tina suddenly disappear and DI Sally Parker is called a out to investigate, but nobody but Megan can confirm that Tina accompanied her. Is Megan telling the truth or is she delusional? DI Sally must sift through the strange events and try to make sense of this case.
This wonderfully combined work of Mel Comley's and Tara Lyons makes you more aware of the dangers of how easily things can go wrong when you befriend people that you've never met and know nothing of and giving your trust too easily to them. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. I give it a 4 star because I would have liked it even more if it was a full length novel, but still a very good story. Thank you fTBC for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I received this ARC recently in exchange for an honest review. It's a D I Sally Parker novella and it was lovely to read another book involving this character. This book is about two people who befriend each other on Facebook and meet up for the first time. We all have 'friends' on social media that we have probably become acquainted with through a friend of a friend but don't actually know them personally. They see our lives happening on a daily basis through our statuses or things we post, photos we share etc but how well do we know them and how do we know who can be trusted and who can't, are they really who they say they are? This book opens up all of these questions and makes you sit back and think about the 'friends' that are on our social media pages. Definitely food for thought! Another great book from Mel Comley, this time co-written with Tara Lyons. I will post my review on Amazon on publication day.
This book was a novella by M A COMLEY and TARA LYONS. I am familiar with MA Comley's books but this is the first joint publication. I enjoyed everything about this book. It started with a meeting between two ladies who had 'met' on the Internet and felt they were friends. It makes you consider how well you can know people you have never met.
Megan wanted to move from France and Tina was going to look at new homes with her. The story has a bit of everything - intrigue fear, mystery and adventure. I loved the style of writing and although it was a short book it had a great story with interesting characters. DI Sally Parker, from MA Comley's series, was involved in investigating when Tina goes missing.
Thank you to Mel, Tara and TBC for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a quick read and had me turning the pages very fast. Deceiving people is very easy if you are deceiving people that easily trust others especially when you meet them on social media. This is the first DI Sally Parker book that I have read and she seems like a nice girl, knows how to do her job and how to listen to people. I would however have loved this to be a novel rather that a novella but I still enjoyed the story. Fast paced and never a dull moment although in the beginning I did not think much of Megan and thought there was something suspicious regarding Tina. I would recommend this as a quick and easy read to lovers of detective and mystery genres.
As a big fan of thrillers I'm always looking for new authors, when I was given the opportunity to read this by unknown authors to myself I was intrigued and have got to say was not disappointed i thoroughly enjoyed this read, a very well written thriller that has you asking yourself questions right from the start, and as any classic thriller this had me guessing all the way to the end as to the outcome, I would recommend this to any fan of the thriller genre and I will certainly read further books from these authors.
One word - WOW! I don't usually read novellas, preferring full-length novels. I wasn't too sure what to expect of this one but I have to say I'm very impressed! The story may be short but I read it in one sitting, it's certainly gripping! It doesn't lack anything when compared to the other DI Sally Parker books. It's fast-paced, brilliantly thought-out, all loose ends were tied up and I highly recommend it. Megan is a great character, I hope we'll be seeing more of her in future books. Thank you to TBC and the authors for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was an excellent little book cowritten by MA Comley and Tara Lyons. It's a DI Sally Parker novella, but the main characters are Meg and Tina, two women who have met online and decide to get together, but when they do, strange things start to happen. I thought I might have had it figured out, but I should have known better. The ending was one I could never have anticipated. A wonderful joint effort by both authors.
First of all I would like to thank the author and TBC for the ARC of this book. I found this story to be quite thought provoking and chilling. The characters are well developed and likable. The story itself makes you think long and hard about the social media trend in general. I not only thought about my social media "friends" but also about my child's. I highly recommend this book as it was a very good read!
A great and easy to read novella from the wonderful Mel Comley and Tara Lyons. The ever blurred distinction between social media and the 'real' world, and the faith and trust we place on relationships on screen plays out in this enjoyable read. Mel Comley never fails to entertain. 5 stars from me.
Megan Carmen gets to know somebody called Tina on Facebook and they soon begin to have a firm friendship. Megan is currently living abroad but she is coming back to the UK to meet Tina and to find a new house. When Megan comes to the UK, a series of events happen which are bizarre as well as being frightening and creepy. All of these events appear to be unconnected. DI Sally Parker and her partner go to investigate the case but nothing is at first appears. This is the first collaboration between Mel Comley & Tara Lyons and what a fantastic collaboration it is. This is a fantastic book. It is really well written and structured. The chapters are quite short but end in such a way that you simply have to read on. Reading this book became addictive and I couldn’t help but finish reading it in one sitting. Web Of Deceit deals with topical issues and highlights the dangers of meeting people from the internet, who you know next to nothing about and who could quite easily turn out to be dangerous. This book really kept me guessing almost to the very end as I just didn’t know who or what to believe. Reading this book was similar to being on a rollercoaster ride as there were so many twists, turns and stomach churning moments. The characters were totally believable and seemed very realistic. For example, Megan is slightly naïve in that she only believes the best of people. She is also headstrong and determined. At first, I must admit that I was unsure that this would work as a novella because I was not sure that the length of the book would do the story justice. I need not have worried as the storyline was fully explored and neatly wrapped up. Nothing was lacking. I really enjoyed reading this and I would definitely recommend it to others. This is a great start to a fantastic working relationship. I can’t wait to read more from the very talented Mel Comley & Tara Lyons.
This is a novella written by Mel Comley together with new author on the block Tara Lyons, I wanted to read Web Of Deceit and get a feel for their writing prior to the release of their first full length novel The Caller released June 2016.
Megan becomes good friends with Tina, a woman whom she met on the Internet, they decide to meet up when Megan returns from France, but how well can you really know someone you have only interacted with through social media? Web Of Deceit explores this issue with relish! It’s difficult to say too much about this book as it is a short story and I’m not one for spoilers! But suffice to say it maybe short but it’s packed full of intrigue and suspense.
I hold my hands up and admit I’m not a big fan of Novella’s but I really enjoyed Web Of Deceit, it has a well defined plot which comes together to make a gritty quick read. One negative, I would have probably rated this 5 stars if the story had been longer, as there was so much potential in the plot. It’s certainly a topical book, as we all have “friends” we think we know well, even though we only know them through social media, would you meet up with them? If you said “yes” you may change your mind after reading this short story!
If you are looking for a quick read and you’re a fan of fast paced crime thrillers, with plenty of tension then this is the book for you, it maybe short but it’s compelling and guaranteed to keep you glued to your seat until you’ve read it all in one sitting. After reading Web Of Deceit I am really looking forward to the publication of The Caller, if Mel Comley and Tara Lyons can pack so much into a novella, then I have high hopes for their full first length book.
I am not the biggest fan of short stories, but I had read and enjoyed all of the previous books in this series and the Justice series also by one of these authors, so I thought I'd give it a go. I was also interested to see whether I could hear the other voice behind the writing as this is the début offering by a new author collaborating with Ms Comley for the first time. Pretty glad I did really. As a short story, it held its own. It is rather dark but the main thing that comes across is that it is perfectly credible. How many of us have trusted people that we have never really met. I know I have but thankfully, my experience had a much better outcome than Megan's. It was a short read but punchy too. I read it all in one sitting and it did keep my attention throughout. I am not sure it would be the best introduction to this series, better to start with the main books but, as a filler, it satisfies completely. I could also hear the "new voice" provided by Ms Lyons and, even with such a short introduction, I like what I hear so far. My only criticism would be that I feel that the storyline is a smidge overcomplicated for just a novella and that it could have been part of a main book. That said, it was complete in this book, I just feel that it has the potential to be a whole lot more.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
