From birth, Camryn has been groomed for sacrifice. She’ll do anything to fulfill her last mission—protecting the Paraspecies king. Recent betrayals have left everyone on edge, especially the king’s second in command. He has no intention of standing down. She must either earn the trust of the mate she can never have or destroy him.
He won’t fail his king again…
Trent will eradicate the treachery within the Paraspecies that nearly killed him and the king. No one is above suspicion—especially the female succuba mage who rescued the king and saved them both from certain death months later. Why would she help the enemy? The elusive female is a hindrance he’s determined to break.
Born in small-town Texas, Cara Carnes was a princess, a pirate, fashion model, actress, rock star and Jon Bon Jovi’s wife all before the age of 13.
In reality, her fascination for enthralling worlds took seed somewhere amidst a somewhat dull day job and a wonderful life filled with family and friends. When she’s not cemented to her chair, Cara loves travelling, photography and reading.
The unfolding story of Camryn's life broke my heart, but she finally gets a different life, a true mate and a HEA.
'The Rending' by Cara Carnes is one of those series that you start reading and it's got you for life. I was given a copy of 'Salvation', the third book in the series, by the author in exchange for an honest review and, once I started reading I really didn't want to put it down, but it is a full-length novel and took me about five days to read (I like to absorb every word so I'm slow). I really didn't want to stop reading for anything, not meals, not sleep, certainly not housework, and I woke up each day eager to get back to the story. Totally illogical I know, but have you ever read a book that had you so hooked it felt like you were living in it and, as though it were a TV programme, you didn't want to stop reading in case you missed something while you were away? Yes, it's one of those and despite all the tears I cried, I absolutely loved it.
If you haven't read the previous two books in this fantastic dystopian series of action packed paranormal romances, please don't be put off. There's a seriously helpful glossary at the beginning of the book that tells you everything you may need to know about The Rending, the history and characters that appear throughout the series to date. Having said that, there's also enough background in the story that you won't feel like you've missed much anyway and it can easily be read as stand alone.
I had a serious problem trying to decide what to write in this review because there's so much going on in the book I had no idea where to start and I really don't want to give spoilers. The story is woven around Camryn as the central character and set, like the previous books, during the on-going conflict following the supposed end of the war known to all as The Rending. Camryn is a generous and kind hearted half Succuba mage who has sacrificed and endured so much in the name of a blood vow. Her current assignment is to save the life of King Bredon who has stayed in Redemption since she rescued him, and is still infected with something she has named Hellfire. She's treated very harshly by almost everyone except the fledglings who were with the King when she rescued him from Facility Six in the first book 'Redemption'. Everyone else in Redemption hates her, including her true mate Trent, and despite all the good she does, continually trample over her feelings like they don't exist and make their hatred of her very clear. She has very few people she can trust or rely on and they can be counted on one hand. The unfolding story of her life is heartbreaking. I went through more than one box of tissues crying for her and all the things she's had to survive. To call it harsh doesn't even begin to cover the levels of pain she's suffered, and still suffers, for all of her 27 years and all of it with the knowledge that she's nothing more than a sacrifice who's painful death will be excruciating and now that King Varden has a new mate and a new alliance with the Mage, it will also happen very soon. She is out of time, but, despite her orders and the less than stellar attitudes of the 'good guys', she manages to train a lot of the Paraspecies warriors to fight and successfully defend themselves against the alliance between the evil Succubae King Varden and his equally evil and twisted new mate, the Mage Queen.
There are some really great characters in this action packed and steamy story, like Hedge, Levi, Blade, Kenny, Sam and Jim, Camryn, her fledglings and the wolves, some totally twisted and evil ones, including Dr Covali, Kelman and his right hand thug, Tony, as well as some totally indifferent ones like Sera and Maeve. Over the course of the book, long held secrets are shared, attitudes and feelings towards Camryn change radically, and because she goes completely against her orders, teaching the warriors and mages of the Paraspecies all the fighting and defensive skills of the ancient ways she grew up with, she finds that the outcomes of prophecies and visions are not set in stone, no matter how many different ones there are with the same ending, they can be changed for the better and she can have a happily ever after with the true mate she loves and who has finally learned to love her. The life she has ahead of her at the end of the book is very different to the lack of one she had at the beginning and I cried happy tears for her every time someone demonstrated they cared about her. This book choked me up from beginning to end. I was sad, happy, angry and frequently downright furious with some of the characters for their treatment of such a generous, lonely and deprived person as Camryn. Whilst not a cliff-hanger ending, there are a few open threads and new questions in need of answers. I absolutely loved it and really can't wait for the next one in this truly spellbinding series.
Cara Carnes if rapidly becoming one of my all-time favourite authors and I've given 'Salvation' 5 seriously well-earned stars. It's on my read again list, where I'm pretty sure it'll be a permanent resident and my list of books to rescue if the house was burning down.
The heroine is so good! She's strong, kind in spite of how she was raised (and I thought what the heroine of the first volume went through was bad, this is so much worst!), and I loved how the youngs attached themselves to her without her realizing it. The hero is more pig-headed at first, as often in books, but seeing him fell was pleasant. The story is solid and grabbing, and I'm sad to realize the author never wrote the story of the dragon king.
I was given an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!!!
I have to say that this is te best book in the series so far. The tears are still streaming down my face!
Kamryn is in so much trouble...everything and everyone is against her and yet she has to follow orders. She has to save the King and his second but both men do it so damn hard.
Trent doesn't know what to feel exactly for the Succuba Mage so when she heals him he can blame all his feelings to the connection that happened over the healing.
When all hell breaks lose he finds himself more and more attached to the Succaba's side and more in need to protect her and take care of her.
I have to say that this book was simply freaking amazing!!!!! There were a few points that were a bit confusing but that took nothing from the amazing plot and the quick pace with wich the story moved. The action in the story either in physical or emotional part was so fast and so hard that many times left me without a breath. The twists and turns of the plot and the emotional roller coaster was damn fun and so freaking enjoyable! A really awesome book to a truly amazing series!!!!!
Third book in series, should be read in order. Mages, wizards, dragons, shifters and other paranormal make up this story. Keeps you interested from first to last page. Well written, emotional, twist and turns around every corner, strong female lead and male lead.
I have read this series multiple times and find it enjoyable entertaining series would recommend for older teens(16 up) it has fighting and sexual activity but
Salvation by Cara Carnes is the 3rd book in the Rending Series. Though it probably could be read as a stand alone I very highly recommend reading the other books in the series first since there is a very complex continuing story line throughout all of the books.
I was recently introduced to one of the stories in this series, as well as this author, while reading an anthology awhile ago. I have to be honest and admit that I probably never would have bothered with even reading anything in this series otherwise, because though I love paranormal romance stories, this particular series is more along the lines of fantasy. But I gave it a shot and was absolutely hooked from there on out. I was so very glad I did because this is a series not to be missed!
As I have said in my other reviews for the other books in this series, this is a story of mages, wizards, dragons and so very much more than just a romance. It is so very easy to become engrossed in the complex world that this author creates. Though there is definitely romance with some great and steamy sex scenes, there is also so very, very much more.
This is the story of the succubus/mage Camryn and the half golden, half red dragon Trent. Trent is the second in command to King Bredon and hates succubus and mages like Camryn for a very understandable reason. Because of this he fights his growing attraction to Camryn for a long time before he finally gives in. Camryn is a wonderful heroine who has basically been tortured and abused her entire life while being brutally trained to fulfill a rather desolate destiny. It is a long and arduous road for these two to finally get together romantically but it is so worth the experience to see how they finally get there.
So very many characters from the previous books are in this one so it is a good thing that the author includes a cheat sheet of who’s who at the beginning of the novel, if only to refresh my memory since its been a few months since I read the last book and there really are so many characters and events at play that it’s important to keep them straight.
There are lots of twists and turns in this book, and after I was finished the book I actually went back to the Prologue to re-read it since the many surprises at the ending were connected with the Prologue and made much more sense after all of the surprises were revealed.
I truly cannot say enough wonderful things about this series. I could go on for pages about everything I loved in this story but instead I will strongly urge you to pick up a copy of this book right away. If you haven’t read the others but want to try a different type of paranormal romance (I compare these stories to’ The Battle Lord Saga’ series by Linda Mooney) you truly will not be disappointed in the world Cara Carnes takes you to!
How deep is her love? Beyond all that life offers.
Ms. Carnes pulled out the stops with this heroine and the story of Salvation. I couldn’t put it down and my emotions were doing a yo-yo dance. For the previous two books in The Rending series, she’s left you wondering just what Camryn’s agenda is. She is at the root of all suspicions and despised by all and yet she sticks loyally by their sides and continues to pull their butts out of the fry pan time after time.
Towards the end of Redemption’s Forgiveness, she saved the lot of them from an army of NAH. She was instrumental in rescuing the king. Still they won’t trust her. Now her mate lies in a coma and she isn’t allowed near him. Of course, no one knows he’s her mate and she is bound by oaths and her mission not to tell anyone. It’s for the best right? After all, she doesn’t expect to make it out of this alive. But she’ll do everything she can to make sure the king and her mate do, in spite of all the visions that say otherwise. So with the help of her fledglings, a bit of ancient magic and ritual, she’ll heal her mate in secrecy. Then she’ll deal with the repercussions of his suspicions. Everything is about the success of her mission.
Trent awakens from his coma to discover himself drawn to the succuba mage. He doesn’t know what her agenda is but he’s going to find out, one way or another. Being ordered to seduce her, though… that doesn’t sit quite right with this warrior. The closer he gets to her, though, the harder he finds it not to defend her. He discovers she is one hell of a knowledgeable warrior. She’s an excellent mentor. She commands loyalty from those she trains. It’s becoming darned hard to stay away from her and it sure isn’t a command that keeps him at her side.
There is so much that could be said about Camryn and Trent. She was raised from birth in the crucible as the enemy behind the lines. Her life has always been about sacrifice. I loved watching Trent fall in awe and in love with her long before he figures out that she is his mate. I loved watching him become the mate she needed him to be. I wish I could express all those things that had my emotions tripping, but you’re going to have to read this one to figure it out for yourself. There are just too many surprises and spoilers to go there. I have no clue how the heck Ms. Carnes is going to top this one. I’m sure we’ll find out when she delivers the king’s story. If you haven’t picked up The Rending series then I’d highly recommend it. It’s an excellent dystopian fantasy. While all of the books can be read as stand alones, I would really recommend reading them in order. *****Reviewed for Xtreme-Delusions*****
Salvation is the second book in The Rending series by Cara Carnes. This series just keeps getting better and better, I couldn't put this book down. In this book not only do you get to know more about Camryn and Trent you also get deeper into the world of Redemption. A world you wont want to leave once you start reading about it.
In Salvation you finally get to know the succuba mage, Camryn. In the previous books you see a bitch with no emotion and tons of mystery. Now you will know who she truly is and all the mystery will come to an end. I can say I spent the better part of this book with tears in my eyes. Camryn is probably one of the strongest females I have encountered in a book and she has gone through so much abuse and been hated by almost everyone she has ever met, yet she always holds her head up and pushes forward. Her entire life has been nothing but sacrifice for people who treat her like crap and this last mission is no different. She is sent to save the kind or the paraspecies and to do it at any cost.N o matter how bad he and his team treat her she is going to save him and she will do it at any price, even her own life. Not only does she have to save him, she is determined to save her mate, a mate she knows she will never be lucky enough to have love her back. I mean come on, who could ever love a succuba mage? They are the most detested of all paraspecies.
After Camryn saves Trent's life he is mysteriously drawn to the succuba mage and cant fathom why. He figures it will eventually go away but until then he plans to watch her as closely as possible. What he doesn't expect is that while keeping a close eye on her he gets to see the woman behind the facade.Seeing who she truly is and the torture she has gone through all her life sheds a new light on the feelings Trent has for her. But will it be too late? Will the feelings he has for her come at the price of loss? So much is a stake, can he keep his king safe and have the love he wants or will her sacrifice to keep them safe come before he knows whats happening?
This was an awesome book and I'm sad I will have to wait for the next one, but I'm sure it will be worth it. Cara does such an amazing job telling these stories with such detail shes definitely on my list of favorite books/authors.
If you love paranormal and are ready for a whole new adventure into an entirely different world than you have even been in, with twists and shocking revelations at every turn, then this is the series for you.
*ARC received in return for an honest review* Oh my! This series just keeps getting better and better with each new book. Salvation is book three in this awesome sci-fi/paranormal/dystopian (or whatever you want to call it) series. It tells the story of what happened after The Rending. The Rending is a twenty year long war between the humans and paranormals (Paraspecies), which began with the murder of the Paraspecies king and his family. At one time all paraspecies coexisted alongside humans without issue, each with their own laws and leaders until the succubae king aligned with the humans and initiated a war between the two for his own purposes. For more details, see the history on the author's website: www.therendingseries.com/history.html. So now the country is divided into sectors and supposedly at peace, but the alliance between the humans and the succubae is still in effect and they have not given up on their goal to destroy the Paraspecies.
The heroine in this book is Camryn, a half succuba, half mage warrior with a lot of secrets, who endured a horrific childhood. Her goal is to protect dragon and King of the Paraspecies, Bredon. She kicks ass, while training the young warriors, saving everyone's lives, and trying not to lose her heart to the king's second, Trent. Trent would do anything for his king but he can't seem to stay away from Camryn even though succubae and mages are the scourge of the Paraspecies. The romance between Camryn and Trent is part of the story, so there is some sex in this book which is hot and emotion filled. I can't say enough about what a fantastic series this is and I can't wait for the next book.
For those who may not have started the Rending series, SALVATION can be read as a standalone, but for maximum enjoyment and understanding of the series, I would definitely recommend you take the time to enjoy the first two books; you won’t be disappointed.
That said, as with books 1 & 2, Salvation does takes a couple of chapters to get moving, but this is only because of the complex world building and descriptive nature of the author’s writing.
Once the story hits its pace, we are overwhelmed by the presence of the two main characters; Camryn, a succubus/mage and Trent, the gold and red dragon who is second to the King. Trent is a hard-arse with an aversion to succubi and mages, but his reasons become blatantly obvious as the story unfolds. While Camryn is a formidable heroine who has endured ruthless training to fulfill her destined role after years of betrayal, torture and abuse she has deliberately tried to forget.
Many characters from the previous books make an appearance as they have strategic roles to play, and with the abundance of twists and turns in this book, you better be paying attention!
So if you love fantasy and paranormal romance, you will devour Salvation, as it is all this and so much more.
Salvation by Cara Carnes is book three in a complex paranormal/ dystopian world series. The author suggested reading them in order and I highly suggest that too. I recently bought Book 1, Redemption which was on sale. Then found that I had Book 2, Redemption’s Forgiveness when I had purchased the Romancing the Wolf Anthology. I am saying all this because I found the first scene in the dungeon confusing. The sorting out of who was who took me some time. I was forewarned and did not heed, don’t make the same mistake.
Still I have fallen under the spell of this imaginary world. I do not remember reading anything by Cara Carnes before but I had seen the name among romance authors. As for this series she has brilliantly created an imaginary world of vibrant and vivid descriptions of places and characters who come to life as you read. It is a story of prejudices, mistrust, injustices, danger, suspense, with heart breaking events, along with lust and love.
The characters main and supporting are complex. There are valiant heroes and heroines and nightmarish villains. Start at the beginning to get the full scope of the overarching theme. Then plan to be carried away to another time and place.

While I have not yet read the first two books, I did not feel lost starting on this one. I will admit there were a few things that I felt would have been clearer to me if I had started with book one, but overall it didn't affect my perception of the story too much. With that being said, I absolutely loved this book. It took me a couple of chapters to really get into it, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. Camryn is such a combination of strong and vulnerable, that you fall in love with her. Everything she has experienced in her life has been with one goal and one goal only. Now that the time has come for that, she finds that life has a way of happening and changing things. Add in all the supporting characters, who you can't help but have strong feelings for, and this is one tantalizing book. I can't wait to read the rest of this series. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Camryn is hiding who she really is from everyone. She's half succubae mage and something else. Camryn' mission is to prevent King Bredon and Trent deaths at any cost. Camryn agrees to train everyone in Redemption ancient battle techniques. Not everyone trusts Camryn or her motives. A group of fledglings trust Camryn against everyone else which pleases Camryn. Trent wants to trust Camryn yet can't explain his attraction to her either. Can Camryn prevent King Bredon and Trent deaths? What is Camryn hiding?
This series gets better with each new book. The characters and story suck you in from first page to last page. Definitely looking forward to more from this series.
The need to protect King Bredon and his first commander Trent is pushing Camryn to put herself in jeopardy. Teaching the Kings troops in the ancient ways of war are their only hope. Falling for her mate Trent, was easy. Giving into their desires was completely off limits until it's not. Loved the new characters and the old. Still a great storyline but at times it got a little confusing like there were parts missing or not explained.
OMG, this was an amazing story!! Just loved learning about Camryn and the horrible things that happened to her when she was young and betrayed. So very happy she found her mate and can't wait until the next book!!
