Yours to Keep or Throw Aside by E.D. Martin

Evolved Publishing presents an intimate glance inside two people's struggle to find happiness and contentment in their often troubled lives. [DRM-Free]

[Literary, Women's Fiction, Contemporary]

When her husband David’s infidelities are revealed, shattering the perfect life Kasey Sanford thought they’d created together, it’s a wake-up call that she’s lost herself along the way. She demands that David move with her to a new town, to a fresh start for their life together.

Kasey loves the freedom of reinventing herself, including her new friendship with police officer and soldier Andrew Adams. Andrew is handsome and charming, and his interest in Kasey awakens feelings she’d rather have for her husband, who pushes her further away with each of his alcohol-fueled outbursts. Intent on preserving her marriage for the sake of her young daughter, and with no one else to confide in, Kasey turns to Andrew for support.

But Andrew’s own life is falling apart as he’s put on standby for another deployment, triggering painful memories he’d rather ignore. He’ll do anything to forget the soldiers who didn’t return home with him, his stillborn son, and all those he’s disappointed, including God.

As their relationship grows, Kasey must decide if she will repair her marriage and remain with the man she’s always loved, or if she will give up everything she holds dear to save the soul of a man she barely knows, a man who fights her at every step, a man desperate to regain his faith in God, in humanity, and in himself.

First, I would like to thank E. D. Martin for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

E.D. Martin’s The Lone Wolf was such an amazing book on so many levels. This book was full of betrayal, infidelities, abuse, alcoholism, power, insecurities, self discovery, tragedies, birth, deaths and even some tears.

David was the one character in the book that I could not stand. I hated his personality, who he was, who he became, how he betrayed Kasey, how he abused her over and over again, how he felt as if he had to be in control. He just got worse as the book went on. However, never did I wish what happened to him to happen.

Nobody should have been put through all the bs that Kacey put up with David. Their marriage was broken and Kacey was not happy. The one person that made her happy was Andrew. Andrew was a friend that was there for her. Each had their own pasts they were dealing with but had a friendship.

I don’t usually talk about the end of the book in the review. However, I am going to say I was disappointed, shocked, and saddened how it ended. I didn’t see it coming.

At the beginning of The Lone Wolf, you’ll be introduced to Kasey Sanford. Within a few words, you’ll immediately relate to a woman leading what is on the surface a fairy-tale life that is shattered by the infidelity of her husband, David. The day-to-day business of living for Kasey is turned upside down as she is confronted with forks in a road she never dreamed of traveling. Understanding her role as a partner through life is the journey a reader will travel with page-turning pleasure and sadness. E.D. Martin expertly brings forth the empathy of the reader with an unusual and wonderful approach, alternating character views with Andrew Adams, the man Kasey will ultimately turn to for healing the ache and confusion of a collapsing life. Carrying a load of his own demons, chemistry draws them together in mutual need.

The Lone Wolf is a character driven story. As with most people, personal history dominates behavior, and the methodology used to reveal the motivations and behavior of Andrew is artfully done. No spoilers here, but you will find the process of this presentation a pleasant read.

I recommend this book, and I’m looking forward to a continuation of this story.

EDIT AUGUST 2015: About a year ago, I read and reviewed the paperback/ebook version of The Lone Wolf by E. D. Martin, and very much enjoyed this character driven story. Because I found the story so engaging, I purchased the audio version via Audible.com .

The Lone Wolf is just over eleven hours of listening. There is an old axiom about audiobooks and this story falls well into the parameters: A good narrator will make an already good book better. It is wonderfully narrated by Holly Adams, all voices nicely done, including those of men and a child. This is a story of infidelity, loss, love, frustration, parenting, belief in one’s self and God, tragedy, joy, sadness, the travesty of post-traumatic-stress … it’s really all there, and very true to life.

Even if you have the paperback and/or Kindle/ebook, do yourself a favor and listen to this story. It is truly an amazing insight into the human condition and delightfully read by Holly Adams.

Redemption. This was the first word that occurred to me with the last sentence of the book. Redemption for what we’ve done; redemption from what we’ve suffered.

The Lone Wolf is a touching story of two people struggling to find their place in life and their true self, two souls which have suffered more than enough, two human beings who have discovered that we are the loneliest in our darkest hours.

As everyone else I’ve had my ups and downs. I’ve loved and I’ve been loved, even in cases when I couldn’t respond with the same.

But maybe what touched me most was the quote:
“You’re keeping me at arm’s length because you don’t want to get hurt, don’t want to depend on me and then have me fail you when you need me most.”

Just think of the many times we’ve done it in our lives – we withdraw ‘cos we’ve been hurt before. We feel lonely, but we don’t dare to ask for help, ‘cos we’re afraid that we cannot return the favour later on, that the other one may require more. We desperately need love, but at the same time we’ve built stone walls round our hearts and we’re just hoping that someone will come and take them down, someone else will save us from ourselves.

Yet, real life is not like that. The others may try to reach us through the walls, but we are the ones that should destroy them and walk ahead. We are the ones to open up our hearts and our souls and grant love, unconditional love to the world, to spread light and love, to be accepting and forgiving.

We are the ones to search for redemption. No! Not search – to grant ourselves redemption, to see the light and walk with raised head towards the tomorrow in our lives.

Wow oh wow. Your gonna need a hanky for this book. Some marriages can be rough and others can be all glitter. You still have your troubles. But it's not a two way street, communication is the key in any type of relationship.
Kasey has had a rough marriage to a husband that won't listen to her at all and has her doing stuff like hosting parties, going to pta meetings and going to parties hosted by his friends. Or so she thought. She wants a simple life, kind of what it use to be before all the glam and glitter. What she finds out one day will shock her awake and cause events to take place that may help or may not. But will she ever be happy again?

Andrew is a soldier and a cop. In a small town a couple hours away from where he use to live. Not having the real so called sitcom family with the white picket fence. But an abusive stepdad, a mother to afraid to help him, a dad who's too busy and a stepmom slash siblings who don't care or like him at all. Besides loosing too many brothers in the war. And so many memories. He's a bit of a lone wolf when it comes to family and such. But it seems every time he opens up, he gets hurt again and again. Will he ever push pass his feelings and wall to see over it? And maybe let a person into his heart?

Life is perfect. At least that's what Kasey thinks. When hardships knock her family from the pedestal she has it on, there is only so much a woman can take. Moving to a different place is hard in the best circumstance throw in a child, it's near impossible but Kasey makes it work.

Being in charge of a group of people is hard. Andrew knows better than most what it's like to do your best and still not have the outcome you want. Every time he needs someone they turn tail and run. It's always the same.

When Kasey looks through the windows of a book store she realizes she's being stared at. Little does she know that starts a whirlwind in her life. When Kasey meets Andrew they bicker and argue and piss each other off.

Throw in some tragedy and some flat out confusion, and you have the interestingly told story that ED Martin has put together.

Follow Kasey and Andrew to see where they end up.

The Lone Wolf was a good story about love, life, and moving forward when you are dealt a bad hand. Kasey is married to a smarmy lawyer, to whom she is devoted. She is the mother of his child. However, David is not as committed to this relationship as Kasey would think. He is a cheater and an abuser. Although Kasey learns that the marriage means less to David, Kasey is willing to sacrifice her happiness to make the marriage work for the sake of their daughter. However, during all of this, she meets Andrew. Kasey has a very strong reaction to Andrew. He is a solder and police officer. This attraction causes turmoil in Kasey because she wants to work on her marriage, but now doubts that is the best thing to do for her daughter.

Can Kasey make the break from David and find happiness with another man? Can Andrew break down his walls and let Kasey in?

I received this book in exchange for a honest review.

The Lone Wolf was a book that steals your heart. I really enjoyed reading it. It's filled with so many emotions that you honestly can't help but enjoy it.

Kasey is a stay at home mom and her husband, David, is a lawyer. David is set on having the perfect family image. When Kasey comes home one day after all her errands, she discovers an envelope in her door. When she opens it she is shocked to find pictures of her husband cheating on her. In order to try to fix their marriage away from all the gossiping busy bodies they associated with as a part of the perfect image, they move to Ashville to start anew. New job, new friends, and a whole new life, Kasey finally gets the chance to figure out who she is.

This book was filled with problems that can happen to anyone, including drinking, cheating, loss and tears, and of course the happy moments that we all take for granted. This book was extremely well written. I highly recommend it.

Very intense book! Around 300 pages of love, grief, anger, and laughter, it was a tear jerker. I did not like the ending after all Kasey had accomplished, but then again could she had handled more? More would Andrew had not changed and she would have struggled more?
