THE GREATEST WESTERN WRITER OF THE 21ST CENTURY LIFE IS CHEAP IN ARIZONA TERRITORY
Raised by the Shawnee, Jamie Ian MacCallister survived the bloodshed of the Alamo and the Civil War. With each victory, the MacCallister legend grew—as violent and unpredictable as the land that gave him life.
Now the battle has gotten personal: the brutal murder of his wife at the hands of the wild Miles Nelson gang. Jamie’s journey of revenge will take him from Atlantic City’s bustling port of thieves, con men and whores to the pristine and deadly landscape of the Colorado Rockies…and finally to a place called Little Big Horn. All he has at his side are his sons and an unquenchable thirst for justice—MacCallister style.

A fitting end to Jamie’s saga and a great exploration of the opening of the West, from the Alamo to Little Big Hirn, through the character’s eyes. Revenge and justice are the motivating factors in this installment as nearly every chapter features Jamie’s bloody vengeance inflicted upon members of the Nelson gang, the viscous outlaws responsible for the death of his beloved wife.
Very much like Louis L'Amour's Sackett series, Johnstone's western series follows the Mac Callister family.
This volume follows the family patriarch, Jaime, while he travels the Rockies to bring justice to the outlaw gang that killed his wife. At the same time, he's being pursued by families of which he has made enemies. Throw in some historical fiction, Jaime riding with George Armstrong Custer, and you have a pretty good tale. Really high body count of the outlaw gang that killed his wife.
This was the very first book I read from William Johnstone. I am a big fan of westerns and have read some good ones and some bad ones. After reading this book I spend months devouring any western Johnstone wrote. A word of caution, read his book series in order and don't do like I did and make this your first William Johnstone experience.
Jamie MacCallister was seeking revenge. And, he certainly did -- seemed like there was bloodshed in all 37 chapters! Joseph A. West, author of the novel, included quite a bit of Western history in his narrative. At times, it was difficult to separate history truths from the fiction. I have put visits to the Scotts Bluff area in Nebraska, the Alamo Saloon in Abilene, Kansas, and the Hotel de Paris in Georgetown, Colorado on my bucket list. I now have the terms "soiled dove" and "curly wolf" added to my vocabulary. :-)
Very interesting "Western" - well written and researched - early times in the western world - settlers - wild towns - Indians unsettled - gun men (both good & bad) - interesting read, traveled 9 states (on horse) to avenge his wife's killer - tracking 51 men - holds interest to the end - also family issues - romance -
This book reminded me about the humor through Mr. . Johnston's books. Life and death can be painful but humor enhances the best parts of life so we can get through the worst parts. Another great and historically accurate book.
They did it agsin. What a great story. Jaime was involved in The Alamo right up to and including Clusters Last Stand. How the authors keep coming up with these stories is beyond me but am glad they do.
This is the 3rd of the series. All 3 were hard to put down. At times it seem like you were there living in the years past. I like the historical part weaved into the stories. Very good reading - highly recommend the series so far.
Just another revenge story. Wife is killed and husband goes after the killers. Travels around killing them left and right. Repeat, repeat, repeat. There are a few side stories but overall, I wasn't at all impressed with this story.
I must I read all the books with Jamie. I started with his crisis as a child, and worked my way through his life adventures. Now his crisis came to and end and he moved on to be with his wife Kate in the Starry walk. It was a great joy reading about his journey.
Another great western series by Johnstone. This one follows the adventures of a family for generations as they help build the American frontier. Recommended
