Bronson's Loose Again! On the Set with Charles Bronson

Rate this book
This all-new companion volume to the acclaimed Bronson’s Loose!: The Making of the ‘Death Wish’ Films reveals more information on the Death Wish series and also details the complex histories behind eighteen other Charles Bronson movies. Documented herein are fascinating tales behind some of the finest Bronson films of the mid-1970s (including Hard Times and From Noon Till Three); his big-budget independent epics Love and Bullets and Cabo Blanco; his lesser-known, underrated dramas Borderline and Act of Vengeance; his notorious sleaze/action Cannon Films classics of the 80s (including 10 to Midnight, Murphy’s Law and Forbidden Subjects); the numerous unmade projects he was attached to; and his TV movies of the 90s (including The Sea Wolf).

Exhaustively researched, the book features over three dozen exclusive, candid interviews including those with directors Frank D. Gilroy and Jerrold Freedman; producers Menahem Golan and Lance Hool; writers David Engelbach, Harold Nebenzal and Andrew J. Fenady; and actors Maggie Blye, Kirk Taylor, Gene Davis, Robert F. Lyons, Kathleen Wilhoite, Angel Tompkins, Catherine Mary Stewart, Robert Joy, and Diane Ladd.

Profusely illustrated with rare promotional materials, behind-the-scenes photos, and images from deleted scenes, Bronson’s Loose Again!: On the Set with Charles Bronson is loaded with previously untold insight into one of the most elusive and unique icons in cinema history.

Paul Talbot is the author of the books Bronson’s Loose!: The Making of the ‘Death Wish’ Films, Mondo The Falconhurst Books and Films, and The Films of the Dionne Quintuplets as well as numerous articles for magazines like Video Watchdog, CinemaRetro, Psychotronic, Films of the Golden Age, Shock Cinema, Screem, and Weng’s Chop. As close as we'll get to a Charles Bronson biography in this century. Essential reading for any fan. I'm still stunned that CABO BLANCO was originally scripted to have Charlie battling a giant squid.

I was already a huge fan of Paul Talbot's first Bronson book, so when I learned of this follow-up I was excited to say the least.
This book is even better than the first, if that is possible. It covers a wide range of Bronson's non-Death Wish movies, with many anecdotes and loads of fascinating information. Talbot loves Bronson, but he doesn't blindly recommend every movie as if it is some under-rated masterpiece. He is very measured and honest about everything, which makes the book a serious appreciation rather than fanboyish nonsense.
Talbot's style is very accessible; he makes the book free-flowing and readable, like the first (only even more so). I found I came away from the book knowing a whole lot more about the movies than I did before. For this kind of thing, Talbot is one of the best writers there is right now. The book is a must. Cannot recommend it enough.

Excellent look at Bronson’s later work, with loads of interviews and re-evaluations of overlooked projects. Very interesting to hear about the many changes some went through from script to screen and even after release. (Cabo blanco)
Well worth it!

The sequel to “Bronson's Loose!, “Bronson's Loose Again!” was in my opinion even better than the first book. Unlike the first book which touches on only the Death Wish movies, the second discusses many of Bronson’s other movies, mainly ones made from the late 1970s until the end of his career in the 1990s. While I am a Charles Bronson fan, I am fairly new to his repertoire and haven’t seen much of his work as of yet. As luck would have it, at the time of writing this, I have only seen one of the films examined in this book (excluding the Death Wish series). Paul Talbot, the author, explains in the forward that the book was written for people who had already viewed all of these movies, but I found that that wasn’t necessary to enjoy the book. It would have helped in parts, such as when reading about specific scenes and avoiding spoilers, but I understood what was being written about just fine. And on the other hand, now I have even more movies of his that I’m excited about seeing. “Bronson’s Loose Again!” was highly informative of the whole movie making processes. It included information on the writing, casting, filming, theatrical run, reviews, and distributions of each film. Also my issue with the first book, not quite being long or as informative, was absolutely resolved with this one.

In his 2006 book Bronson's Loose!: The Making of the Death Wish Films, author Paul Talbot chronicles the making of Death Wish and its four sequels through a series of behind-the-scenes interviews and anecdotes with members of the cast and crew. Ten years later, Talbot returns with a companion piece aptly titled Bronson’s Loose Again! On the Set with Charles Bronson, an in-depth look at the films Bronson made after Death Wish and outside of that franchise. The book is filled with insightful information and colorful production stories, with each chapter dedicated to a particular film presented in chronological order.

The choices of movies here are either haphazard or eclectic. I appreciated reading it either way, although it being designed to be read out-of-order meant that some basic facts are repeated.

This covered a lot of the movies I most wanted to see in such a collection, starting with Hard Times and Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus, for whatever that's worth. I enjoyed reading about all of them, including some I need to catch up with. I don't think I even knew about The Sea Wolf.

I could easily keep reading these, although I suspect there's only so much of interest to many. I'm fascinated putting together the complex and occasionally wildly contradictory vision of Bronson that comes though in all of the interviews.

Although I prefered the First Book Bronson's Loose,Bronson's Loose Again has a little more information on the Deathwish franchises such as some players who were not available for interviews in the first book. The Main focus of course is On Post-Deathwish Movies Bronson,One of my favorites 10 to Midnight is in there and some other good movies. I highly recommend Both books Bronson's Loose and This one Bronson's Loose Again!
