Too Close for Comfort Gritty. Fast-paced. Compelling. As the newest murder squad recruit for Mildenheath CID, DS Wendy Knight knows that she will face the unthinkable, but what she does not anticipate is that a sadistic killer may be too close for comfort.

When a known prostitute is found dead, Wendy is assigned to the case. Solving it means that she will have to outwit and outsmart an elusive serial killer. As her investigation unfolds, so too does a sinister plot that will turn her world upside down and make it increasingly difficult to distinguish friend from foe in her tightknit world.

Could the murderer be hiding in plain sight?

Will the answers she seeks be more than she can bear?

Guilty as Sin A missing teenager. A murdered businessman. A huge, earth-shattering secret. When seventeen-year-old Danielle Levy goes missing one lunchtime, DS Wendy Knight and DCI Jack Culverhouse believe they have a routine case on their hands.

When a prominent local businessman is found dead in his warehouse, however, the case takes a whole new disturbing turn as Knight and Culverhouse begin to unravel the connections between the two cases which lead to a dark and disturbing secret that will make them question everything they thought they knew.

Jack Be Nimble They know when he will kill again... but not who he will kill

A killer is loose on the streets of Mildenheath, and his barbaric crimes seem a little too familiar...

As the body count begins to rise, DS Wendy Knight and DCI Jack Culverhouse start to realise that the killer is emulating the gruesome, grisly murders of the world's most famous and elusive serial killer: Jack the Ripper.

With Culverhouse struggling to come to terms with his ex-wife's dramatic return after she disappeared eight and a half years earlier and Knight trying to cope with the trauma she’s suffered following devastating events of two previous cases, the race is on to stop the killer before he completes his final kill and retreats back into the darkness.

They know he's going to kill again, but they don't know where or who his next victim will be. And what's worse, they don't know who he is either...

First of all, to be clear, I had previously read the first two books in this 3 book set some time ago so this review is only for the third book - Jack Be Nimble - which I have just finished!

Another winner:
This was another of Adam Croft’s winners. Jack Culverhouse and Wendy Knight are a strange pairing – he is very impatient and brash, she is hard working and determined to be the best she can. They both have problematic private lives which occasionally intrude on their police duties but which have to be put on the back-burner when they are working on difficult cases.

Adam is an exceptional writer who is very good at keeping his readers guessing as to what is going to happen next – one of the finest masters of suspense. Whenever I pick up one of his novels I always know I am in for a treat. The story was additionally fascinating with the links to the original Jack the Ripper.

The only sad thing about the whole story was the ending, along with the fact that it was over far too quickly but, of course, that leaves the reader wanting more.

Couldn't finish

I think some authors don't do a great job with female characters. This is the case here. I only read part of the first book and just couldn't continue. I did not like the characters at all. I would have thought that a police detective would be reasonably smart and know something about the law and investigation. And as for the character herself, it was hard to relate to her as she is basically a stupid alcoholic slut. Not too many people "shag" in a second date! Otherwise she pretty much talks and acts like a 12 year old. The male protagonist is vulgar and just as stupid. What's the point?

CON: Dreadful and unlikeable characters. I'm stumped to say anything nice about them. How the two police representatives ended up in the police force I will never know. It seems, in an attempt to be gritty, we are left with grossness. Unwieldy scenes that go nowhere. DNF'd before I threw the kindle at the wall.

PRO: It was on a deal.

I read book 1 of this set last year and reviewed it separately. This review is for the second book, Guilty As Sin 3*:
For me this one was baffling right from the start because the family of the missing girl were either walking the dog or dogs at differing times. Now, I remembered this and was wondering why that was but now I've finished it I have realised it was probably just typos, which is irritating as far as I'm concerned.....it doesn't take much to get my back up, however. Then we learn Danielle had an IPhone but they didn't think it was backed up......I thought that was an automatic function.
I found the mention that in every secondary school class, there will be 2 kids self-harming a shock. What's gone so wrong in society and why are kids these days behaving so mentally disturbed ?? It can't ALL be the internet's fault.
Once again, Culverhouse keeps me amused with his non-PC straight talking. It's sooooo refreshing.
This story was pretty short, I finished it in under 24 hours so I hope the next one is longer. He lost one star in this review, which would've been a 4* because he committed THE cardinal sin of writing one character's name near the end when he meant another. That baffled me again till I figured out what he meant !! Onto book 3 now.
Jack Be Nimble 4.5*:
I liked this book more as it was longer than Guilty As Sin, giving me more to sink my teeth into, so to speak. I liked the parallel with the original Jack The Ripper murders as well in this one. What I am finding I like the most about this series is the deliciously un-PC-ness of them. I enjoy that such a lot and long may it continue. I'll definitely be reading the rest of them.
I am pretty irritated with Helen, the current Mrs Culverhouse, and how she's been behaving. The sooner he kicks her into touch the better. I laughed aloud at his remark about Marathon among his other usual gems. It was nice to meet Detective Debbie and the new local reporter girl, too. I liked both of them.
There were the odd dropped punctuation marks in this one and then Janet Grey was mentioned as "the" Janet Grey quite peculiarly yet a further sentence lost the from it !! However, that was it for mistakes in this one which I was very happy about. I didn't mind the 2 short bonus stories he included in this omnibus, but as a rule shorts don't interest me much. Of the 2 I preferred the first of them.

Brilliant trilogy of drama and mystery

Another great set of books involving Culverhouse and Knight. Intriguing scenarios and authentic terror throughout. A typical Marple- esque set of stories where the final ending is nowhere what you are beginning to expect. A truly great page turner for all mystery fans.

Been generous with my rating

I downloaded these to fill in the time during the covid 19 outbreak and as they were free I feel guilty being critical. However, I couldn't describe them as being well written, in the last one the culprit wasn't mentioned until the last chapter. There are constant references to a events in a previous book, the writer has no knowledge of police procedures, the characters are unbelievable, sorry wasn't going to critisise.
Have decided to change my rating to 2 stars.

Read these in chronological order and enjoyed all three stories. Easy to read and the stories flowed well. Culverhouse is an old school copper and I warmed to him immediately for sticking to his non-pc principles. Wendy Knight grew on me. I appreciated the banter between characters and the general feel of the books.

Adam Croft's Knight & Culverhouse is a crime thriller that documents the efforts of a hard-nosed DCI and his DS as they try to solve serial killer mysteries. DCI Culverhouse has been through it all and he takes no prisoners, being tough on alleged criminals. DS Knight is more reasonable but thorough in her efforts. The two are a mismatched pair. As the mysteries proceed, the two of them begin to adjust to each other and to affect each other's attitudes. These stories provide background for each of the characters and those that are associated with their work. Culverhouse's wife has left him and he has not really adjusted in the eight years since she vanished with their daughter. Knight feels held behind because of Culverhouse's attitudes. However, the two of them manage to overcome personal tragedies and interpersonal conflict to solve the crimes. The murders are sufficiently different between the stories to keep the narrative fresh and the action entertaining.

Three great books plus two additional short stories at a real bargain price!
Not so much “Good Cop – Bad cop” more like “Old School – Fresh young and out to prove cop” I received this set free from the author for a open and honest review and I am so glad that I had this golden opportunity to find something different and new.
The books are about a grumpy and hardened old school cop Culverhouse with attitude and a young and fresh called Knight who shouldn’t really get along but such as in life make an outstanding team. The stories are clever and robust and the characters are interesting and feel real and get so involved in the story and the relationships as it develops it just makes good interesting reading. For me the first book glued me to the story as you learned about the two cops and the ending had a twist you don’t see coming. Three great books, three great stories what more do you need, maybe the next book in the series!

Excellent

These had me gripped right from the start Knight and Culverhouse make a great team together. Old school cop with new school cop whose father used to be a cop but with a few skeletons in the cupboard. The way they bounce off of each and and solve the cases keeps you hooked, through in their private lives into the mixture and even more you want to read. What is Culverhouse's wife that left him doing back on the scene and what is she up to? You are just going to have to read tot find out this mystery and the others of the killer that is a bit to close to the home for one of the team, and no its not the wife, or the girl that disappears but turns up a little later as someone else also very close to her home, or someone is killing on the same dates as Jack the Ripper did is that just the only connection and what does a hairdresser have to do with it all.

Not really sure what to make of these stories. I don't like Culverhouse - not sure how he got to be a DCI. He is vulgar, has no sensitivities or consideration for his team or the victims. In previuos detective novels the team may be mismatched but do manage to work things out and you can see how they at east work as a team of sorts. not in this case. Culverhouse does not seem to listen to anyone except himself - and that is through all 3 books - although in Jack be Nimble he did start to thaw out a little.
There doe snot seem to be any rapport or working relationship between Knight & Culverhouse - although it may be that as the stories are quite short the characters don't get chance to develop very quickly. I am hoping books 4-6 improve.

I had actually read the first two books in 2017 but decided to read them again as a refresher. I absolutely loved this box set. It was great to read them again. Culverhouse is an amazing boss and Wendy has had a rough ride. The last book was new to me and it did not disappoint. I found myself at work dying to get home to read some more. I actual twigged earlier in the book that it would be hairdressers related, so pretty chuffed I worked that out. Brilliant series and now I am going to have to get the next one.

Well, if you like bad tempered, rude policemen who are not politically correct who team up with mixed up females then these are the books for you. The first book did not make me want to keep reading but they do get better. The third book based on the Jack the Ripper murders was interesting but bit drawn out. The personal trials of the main characters were a bit of a distraction. Even though I did guess the bowline murderer.

Incredible read, gripped from the start. I really do love the books written by this Incredible Author. The characters really gripped me and I happen to like both Knight & Culverhouse. Can’t wait to download book 4-6 now as I for sure need to find out more about Culverhouse wife and his daughter Emily. 5* rating from myself.

I'm conflicted.

I liked the police stories but I didn't really like the two main characters.

DCI Culverhouse is much too old school - despite his age, he clearly needs to retire. DS Knight decided to tell a bartender all about the case before it had been released to the public and then decided to drive home after drinking. AND she gets injured but goes straight back to work.

Nothing detracts, nothing inspires

In my usual way of starting a review, I award three stars. If I see something that detracts from the story, I subtract a star. If I see something that I find exceptional, I add a star.

This book set I found simply average. Nothing thrills, nothing disappoints. So, three stars it remains.

Knights & Culvergouse Box Set- Books1-3

I liked the books because it showed Knight, a woman, who was in the foreground of every case. In particular I liked the part about the crime that had alot of the Sherlock Holmes mystique. I would recommend this box set as a good read because I really had to concentrate on the clues.

Not worth 2 cents

Didn't get past 5th chapter and quit reading. Why does every other word have to be a swear or dirty word? Such filth ruins the story and the book. Writers, clean it up if you really want better reviews.

These are the first three books in the series and they were free! I kind of want to read the rest. These are short, quick novels which was perfect as I mostly read in the car while we were travelling. The characters are kind of quirky and the writing is choppy but they are decent police procedural.

My sleep audiobook and then my fill-in walk audiobook. I listened repeatedly and it grew on me, especially due to the excellent narration by the author. I’ve listened so much I can repeat phrases while enjoying the three book set. Thank you Adam Croft.
