These comics chronicle the adventures and misadventures of Dinah, a young dinosaur who has Asperger’s Syndrome (so-called high-functioning autism).
Each of Dinah's adventures is based on a real-life occurrence. Dinah believes that the best way to deal with most things in life is to laugh at them, and hopes to offer to the non-Aspie a small insight into the challenges of her everyday life, and to her fellow Aspies and auties, solidarity, and reassurance that they are not alone.
I adore these comics. I am an Asperger myself, and there are many situations depicted in these comics that I find very, very recognisable.
At the doctor, the doctor asks: “What brought you here?”
Dinah, confused. After pondering the question she responds: “A bus?”
The moment she replies “A bus”, she realises that this was probably not the answer the doctor was looking for. But she's right — the doctor's question is confusing, indirect, irrelevant, typical of the neurotypical world that surrounds aspies. Truly, these comics are very true and very funny.
You can get a taste of the comics through Dinah's very own blog . Many of the comics in the book are also available online, but the quality is better in print, and some comics occur only in the book.
What is great in this book: all 40 comics.
What is not so great in this book: the fact that it has only 40 comics. I can't wait for the sequel!
This is a fantastic little comic strip type picture book that explains in such a great and quirky way the troubles and confusions faced every single by those on the Autism Spectrum. If your looking for a light and amusing insight it our lives please do take a look.
