Gwen Stacy: Spider-Woman! In one universe, it wasn't Peter Parker bitten by the radioactive Spider, but Gwen Stacy! She's smart, charming and can lift a car- just don't tell her Police Chief father! This special reprint of the top-selling Edge of Spider-Verse #2 comes packed with bonus material including script pages, sketches and more!
David Jason Latour (b. 1977) is an American comic book artist and writer known for his work for Image, Dark Horse, Marvel and DC comics on titles such as Wolverine, Winter Soldier, Southern Bastards and Spider-Gwen.
This was a pretty good introduction to Gwen Stacy's spiderwoman, and definitely left me wanting to read more of this series. But it also left me wanting MORE, not in a good way. I knew it wasn't her origin story and so it's not like that's what I was expecting, but we only get a tiny glimpse into Gwen's life in this and I was left more than a little unsatisfied. Maybe I need to pick up the Edge of Spider-verse trade and read this in the context of the storyline its actually part of. But the art is gorgeous (Gwen's Spiderwoman costume is amaze) and the characterisation is interesting, and I think the Spider-Gwen series is going to be really great.
WOW! So this is an alternate universe where Gwen Stacy was bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker! The first 2 pages they sort of give us a flashback for what has been happening do far! Spider Gwen is awesome and i love it! Awesome issue for anybody who loves Gwen Stacy!
oh my god, I am rereading this after seeing Across the Spider-verse (...4 times), and I am in love with the way they brought Gwen's story onto the big screen! I have such a bad memory that I forgot all about this after my first read, so I didn't notice how true they stayed to the comic and Gwen's origin story. The way they recreated the comic panels through gorgeous, absolutely stunning animation, and even added bits here and there which were not originally written (I just wanted to be special... like you... Gwen. gwen? who's gwen?), and just the emotions carried out in that opening scene (I cried all four times watching her opening scene) when there was so little to work with here amazes me (okay, I don't know if there is an extended version of her entire backstory, but most of it is crammed into one single across-page in this issue).
Every spider-person goes through some extremely traumatizing stuff, and Gwen is no exception. Her story is so incredibly heartbreaking, I can't imagine carrying the guilt of accidentally killing your best friend (and have him die in your arms), while your father hunts for you for the murder of said best friend. This comic, although short, conveys the struggles and responsibilities Gwen has to face being Spider-Woman. However, maybe it's because I'm accustomed to ItSV, I don't particularly enjoy this art style? But it's possible they have different artists for the other issues, so we'll see! I adore Gwen so much and hopefully I will actually start reading all her comics this time around :)
PS, I played the AtSV soundtrack while reading this, and it works so well!

I love Gwen so much ahhhhhh can’t wait to read the rest of her stuff<33
When I had heard about Spider-Gwen at New York Comic-Con I was floored. I was completely excited that Gwen Stacey was going to not only become her own super hero but also get her own series of comics. This is a fantastic introduction to her, her world, and her as Spider-Gwen. It's a great read, especially if read before reading Spider-Gwen issue #1.
Una muy rápida introducción a Gwen Stacy en la Tierra-65. Me pareció muy corto, pero lo estoy leyendo en un compilado de Spider-Gwen (Into The Spider-verse) así que no viene tan mal.
A new reader simulator. The main character herself is extremely likable. Heck, I started to buy Spider-Gwen collectibles before I actually started reading the comic! I just love the design and the whole all-female rock band motif is absolutely brilliant. Nerdist.com claimed it to be instantly likable and, well, they didn't lie. The problem is - this issue is confusing as heck. The story starts in the middle of something and the thing is - there's nothing before it! Yes, this issue is not the first appearance of Gwen, but still, there was no proper backstory before. So, when this issue starts with "Previously on Spider-Woman" it's as confusing as getting into the entire comics thing for the first time. You're like "Wait, what? Why?!" And that feeling ruins this issue a lot. But still, amazing design and pretty cool setting. Would like to read more.
This story felt like a sheer drop off in story-telling. I still enjoyed it, and I definitely enjoyed the art design, and I like the retelling of Gwen being the "super-hero" and the backstory, but she actually did not seem that interesting of a character other than, "Hey, I'm a drummer." I would have liked to have seen something a little... deeper? More interesting? I don't know, but the story lacked charisma, as did its main character.
Gwen's origin feels rushed and uninteresting. Some of the references ("Face it Tiger") are far too meta. Captain Stacy's reaction to Spider-Woman's unmasking is flat and emotionless. Feels rushed. Peter Parker's Lizard form is barely touched on, although it's a great idea.
The art is unsightly sometimes. Especially in closeups of Gwen.
Gwen's character here is a tiny bit irritating and slightly tropey. She isn't heroic or likable enough. She's also kinda bland. Most importantly, she acts and looks nothing like classic Gwen Stacy, which I hate, because we should have seen classic Gwen before her transformation into Spider-Woman. After she got bitten, she could've gotten a makeover inside and out. But nope - we skip right into the spider bite with no backstory. Underwhelming.
Spider-Gwen in this issue could benefit from being more heroic and having way more character depth to separate her from Peter. Also, possibly having a passive love interest, maybe Mary Jane / Glory, or even Black Cat. New York City itself is also a wasted opportunity - it would've been cool if the writers went with a futuristic / cyberpunk look for this New York.
I read the entire Edge of the Spider-verse event on Marvel Unlimited. I had gotten the free trial and the discount code of Agatha All Along for 50%, and I made sure to read as much as I could, especially om Gwen Stacy (who is my favorite Spider- sorry Peter... Sorry Miles... But I chose Gwen)
I really enjoyed it. For someone who doesn't read many comics and for only having read stuff on Spider-Gwen, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch and Agatha Harkness... I was able to follow the storyline without getting lost with all the Spider-people I didn't know. Pretty good and fun, I might actually start reading some more comics while I've got the subscription.
I loved spider gwen’s story and barely tolerated the others in this volume. I skipped over two in the middle entirely because the two men’s stories were like of a couple of nerd bros came up with the most cliche and boring story (including a weeping woman who throws herself into a man’s arms completely unprompted and lets the man deny her). I couldn’t bring myself to actually read that bull. Gwen Stacy, girl, I love you but you gotta get out of this company. Peni was interesting and I would have read more about her.
Love this quick introduction to Gwen as Spider-Woman/Spider-Gwen. Also wasn’t expecting Gwen to be in a band with Mary Jane, but it was a fun twist. Also Matt Murdock popping up for a minute was a nice surprise to. All in all a fun introduction, and that twist at the end has me interested to see what will happen next now. 🙉👌🏼
The whole comic gets three stars, Gwen's story gets four. But I already read that story in Vol. 0: Most Wanted. I'm not sure where I went wrong, but I thought Edge of Spider-Verse was going to give me more of her story. Instead, I read a bunch of other short stories in other universes I didn't care for.
This was a fun what if scenario but I did forget whether or not I had finished it... Which isn't a great sign. Still, I'm excited to re-visit the character in her own series once I'm done with the Spider-verse.
This was fine, interesting but I wasn’t engaged which is mainly because I am not as into traditional comics. Didn’t fully know the back story and had trouble following some of the panels. I did like the concept though.
the reading order for spider-gwen is confusing asf and i think (?) this is her first appearance but the art & her design is just mwah ! excited to see more of this girly
Loved this collection, even though one story leant heavily into body horror, which I do not like. I really want to read more of these and see what other kind of Spider-people are out there.
