A gardener’s plant choice and garden style are inextricably linked to the place they call home. In order to grow a flourishing garden, every gardener must know the specifics of their region’s climate, soil, and geography. Gardening in the South is comprehensive, enthusiastic, and accessible to gardeners of all levels. It features information on site and plant selection, soil preparation and maintenance, and basic design principles. Plant profiles highlight the region’s best perennials, annuals, trees, shrubs, and bulbs. Color photographs throughout show wonderful examples of southern garden style. Gardening in the South is for home gardeners in Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana.
Excellent addition to the home gardener's retinue of resources. Small enough to tote around at your local nursery. Large enough to contain beautiful photographs of each plant listed.
This book was very informative and really well done for the road subject matter it covered. It was full of great descriptions and was also very approachable and interesting. The consistent use of photos was also a great element that brought a visual balance to the large body of text.
Gardening in the South: The Complete Homeowner's Guide by Mark Weathington (Timber Press 2017) (635.90975). Now here's an odd Goodreads entry. Goodreads has the book listed under another name (“Growing the Southeast Garden”. Goodreads' index lists the book under the second name ("Growing In..."), but right there on the same Goodreads page is the cover photo of the book – bearing the title I used above (“Gardening in...”). How perfectly odd. I was tipped off to the problem when the book I read and returned from my local public library did not show up either on the library's index or on Goodreads' index. And now you know how it turned out. Turning to the book in question, this is a standard-issue review of the most popular garden center plants from vines to trees. It's not a bad book, but it adds nothing to the standard literature. My rating: 7/10, finished 7/20/18.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel! I am in the process of creating a garden from scratch at a new house. The only thing there previously are weird bushes planted in strange places and a bunch of wisteria vine that has chocked out everything else that might have grown. Let me say that I never knew how invasive wisteria vines are!!! It has taken a year to clear away the rubbish and I'm now ready to plant when Spring arrives.
This book is broken into the type of plant and has a very clear symbol guide on the various categories gardeners need: shade, full sun, partial sun, around trees, etc. I enjoyed being able to look into the bush section and fining very easily the bushes that I can plant in shade areas and also know how big they might grow, how far to plant them from other things and more. I can also look up specific plants and flowers and find out similar relevant information to see if it would work with what I already have planned. This is an excellent book to have electronically so that I can access it from my phone while out shopping for the various plants needed.
