438 dagar av Johan Persson och Martin Schibbye är en bok jag aldrig kommer att glömma. Den är lika spännande som den mest fängslande deckare, eller thriller, eller skräckfilm, för den är riktigt ruskig, mest för att berättelsen är sann. Det har faktiskt hänt dessa två personer, nu i vår upplysta tid, då gränser suddas ut och världen blir öppnare. Eller är det bara som vi inbillar oss?

Efter att ha lyssnat på 438 dagar är jag lite chockad över hur lätt det kan hända, att ens vardag rubbas, att man blir oskyldigt anklagad, riskerar att dö. Är oändligt glad att jag tog mig tid att lyssna på den här boken. Jag har haft mardrömmar under tiden, men det var det värt. Läs den, läs den, läs den och berätta för alla andra att de ska läsa boken!

438 dagar handlar om Johan och Martin, frilandsjournalister som tar sig olagligt över gränsen från Somalia till Etiopien och Ogadenregionen. De färdas med rebeller och fem dagar efter att de har korsat gränsen blir den anfallna av regeringsstyrkor som skjuter dem. De får ingen vård, förs bara till fängelse. Från den stunden börjar kampen för att överleva, att berätta för omvärlden att de lever och är fängslade.

Det som från början var tänkt som ett reportage om flyktingar och Lundin Oil, blir till slut en berättelse om korruption och förtryck, och om hur man överlever 438 dagar i ett fängelse, där man ligger som packade sillar på ett betonggolv, där det saknas vatten och mat. Där ingen vet att man finns.

Johan och Martin hade tur, de kom hem. Ännu sitter många av deras medfångar fängslande, journalister precis som dem, orättvist dömda för att vara terrorister, bara för att de ville berätta om de rätta förhållandena i landet.

Det här är verkligen en bok som inte lämnar mig oberörd. Läs den och sprid den!

Reading challenge 2015: A book based on a true story

"Den här boken skulle inte ha funnits om inte allt gått åt helvete."
(translation: "This book wouldn't have existed if everything hadn't gone to hell.")

Despite being a self-proclaimed history geek I tend to have trouble with longer books analyzing or retelling particular historical events from a key person's perspective. This book, however, is different. This book is personal. This book is about a historical event that's happened in my lifetime and it's written by those it happened to. It's not someone else who's interviewed them and then written it down; this book is their personal story. Like it says in the foreword: "It isn't just based on a true story. It is a true story."

In the early summer of 2011 I had just moved back to Sweden from China and was preparing to head off to university. At the same time photographer Johan Persson and journalist Martin Schibbye were preparing for a mission. A dangerous mission. They were going to a part of Ethiopia that was closed off for the media in order to report on the backside of the oil companies' claim on the area - and they were going there with a group of rebels.
Dangerous, yes.
Mad, yes.
Necessary, absolutely.

They were captured, shot, mistreated and eventually sentenced to 11 years in prison. For terrorism. They ended up being held in captivity by the Ethiopian government for 438 days before being pardoned in September 2012. During that time they met others in captivity, others who, just like them, were journalists. Others who had expressed their mind in words. All of them were accused of terrorism.

You don't realize how important the freedom to speak your mind is until that freedom is taken from you. You don't realize how important journalists are for the sake of democracy until they are the ones accused and held in prison halls meant for 100 people - but in truth packed with more than 200. You don't realize how far people can go to make you say the opposite of what you want to say until they, for months, trick you, give you false hope, let your shot wounds get infected without treatment and are more interested in using you as an actor in a propaganda movie instead of giving you a clean bandage.

It's gritty, it's beautiful, it's filled with good and bad memories, it's inspiring, and it's all true.

First of all, I really loved the way this was written. I'm usually not a big fan of autobiographies, but this was very nicely written. Also knowing that one of them - Martin, is a journalist who writes himself made the writing feel more faithful to the both of them.

Reading this mostly made me think about freedom of speech and press. How truly important it is, and how most of the world doesn't have that as a given, as a law.

And also how scared I am that people in the west are taken it so much for granted; to a level where they think it's ok to walk around and think that people who doesn't think like them should be silenced. Just being online a lot and seeing what people say and how they act scares me. The majority are acting and thinking in a fascistic way - which really makes me feel like freedom of speech is starting to become severely threatened. Even in the West. I don't know, this isn't really about the book itself, but reading about a scenario where there is no freedom of press made me think about this alot.

Anyway, I remember faintly when I was in school, maybe in the 6th grade? And this happened and our teachers talked about it. Reading Martin's occasional thoughts and longing for Göteborg made it feel so much more real to me. I know those places! It's mad.

Yeah, a very interesting read and it's so unsettling to read this and think that this actually happened. All those people are real, and the people from the prison for example probably still live like that right now.

Har läst reportaget, har läst intervjuerna, hört sommarprogrammet. Men boken håller absolut. Den är tätt, tätt skriven och växlar mellan dom två berättarna. Både miljön i fängelset och deras egna personligheter är bra beskrivna, och man fattar verkligen vad dom gått igenom.

Wow! Otroligt välskriven och så viktig historia. I flera år har journalist varit mitt drömyrke, och nu är jag mer taggad än någonsin på att äntligen få börja min journalistutbildning nästa år! Den här boken har verkligen övertygat mig om hur viktig journalistiken är. Det vill säga, journalistiken som syftar till att sprida kunskap och medvetenhet, inte journalistiken som syftar till att sälja bäst med hjälp av lögner och clickbaits. Enormt inspirerande.

I thought the first half was interesting but nothing that really intrigued me, felt like a 3. But then the second half came and I got tear eyed almost every time a family member was mentioned, the longing and the worrying gripped me. I also appreciated getting to know the other prisoners and I would have liked to know more about them, their life before, during and after their time in prison.

Maybe the fact that I read the second half almost in one go due to a long car trip enhances the experience and made it easier for me to get caught in the story. And maybe the first half would have been better if I’d done the same thing, we will never know. But since the first half did not win me over maybe a 3,5/5 should be my final rating.

En av de bästa böckerna jag läst på senaste. Trots det annorlunda spåret jag valde när jag tog denna boken i handen för att läsa intro texten på baksidan, gav det mig något helt oväntat. En riktigt bok, spännande, sorglig, fylld med känslor och frågor. Det är inte fota jag tänker lika mycket på en bok som när jag läste denna.

Ett alltför stort problem med mänskligheten nu för tiden är inte bristen på medvetenhet. De mesta har insikt och förstår/ har hört om hemskheten i fängelset och i korrumperade länder. Men det är dessa djupa skildringar baserat på det riktiga som jag inte tagit del av innan, en bok som djupast mitt synsätt på verkligheten på världens allra hemskaste platser. En ny syn på vad som är rätt och fel.

Strangely, this book reminds me most of Pietra Rivioli's 'The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade'. Except we replace the t-shirt with journalists and production of goods with reporting.

Läste ut den i slutet av juni. När jag började läsa kunde jag knappt sluta, fruktansvärt lärorik. Var själv inte riktigt rånyfiken när det hela ägde rum ca 2011 då jag var såpass ung, så att få chansen läsa om allt i efterhand var rejält surrealistiskt.

Kortfattat: handlar om två journalister, Martin Schibbye och Johan Persson som försöker ta sig in i den konfliktfyllda Ogaden i Somalien/Etiopien. Olja har blivit funnen i regionen, vilket har lett till en hänsynslös jakt som drabbar alla civila i området.

Det här är en spännande och viktig bok som kastar en mellan storpolitiskt spel och människorna mitt i det. Genom boken fick man en inblick i Etiopiens betydelse på världskartan men framför allt visade boken hur viktig den grävande journalistiken är och att journalister tillåts rapportera från ställen där ingen annan vågar rapportera

De första ca 80 sidorna av boken var extremt sega, trodde inte jag skulle orka ta mig igenom den. Men sedan blev den mer intressant och gripande, tappade tempo ett tag i mitten, men på slutet ville man ju bara läsa klart för att få veta att de tog sig ut ur fängelset. Intressant också att läsa om hur människan i fångenskap fungerar och klarar av att överleva genom att skapa rutiner att hålla fast vid. Tänkte först ge lågt betyg, men sista delen av boken gör att jag höjde betyget.

Skildringen från de två reportrarna som hamnade i etiopiskt fängelse då de försökte göra ett reportage om situationen i Ogaden. När jag slår igen boken är jag glad att det finns människor som sätter bekvämlighet, trygghet och till och med sina liv på spel för att berätta något viktigt för världen. Ett bevis för att god journalistik är nödvändigt för ett upplyst samhälle.

En intressant, tankeväckande och framförallt viktig bok. En bok inifrån en diktatur. Ett land med en fasad man gärna visar upp och en ytterst korrumperad insida, där manipulation och lögner är kutym.
Intressant också med det politiska maktspelet och den tysta diplomatin.
Jag lyssnade på boken och tycker att det var synd att inte båda författarna läste.

Otrolig bok, som blandar gapskratt åt saker som är helt absurda till tårar för den närhet som Martin och Johan visar sina familjer. Så viktig bok som skildrar något som aldrig annars ens skulle ha kunnat bli skildrat. Om pressfrihet men även om människoliv.

Mycket intressant läsning som hanterar konflikten i Ogaden-regionen i Etiopien, och Martin Schibbye/Johan Perssons resa dit för att undersöka och rapportera om den. Otroligt intressant och dessutom väldigt underhållande och lärorik.
