Judge Rosswell Carew’s fiancée is still missing. Because her last call to him came from a payphone in Sainte Genevieve, Carew arranges to hold court there so he can pursue his search for her. When he witnesses someone who resembles Tina tossed from a riverboat ferry, he's plunged into a nightmare world he never knew existed. Rosswell is astounded when he discovers that what he saw and the fate of Tina are intertwined. Unable to convince the local authorities that something deadly is going on, Rosswell teams up with his faithful research assistant Ollie Groton to discover the truth. The excitement never lets up until the last page.
This is the second book I have read by this author and I really loved it. It follows on from where book one finished, where Roswell's girlfriend had gone missing from the hospital. This is a light hearted mystery about how a practicing Judge and his research assistant Ollie (ex con) who think they are detectives trying to solve the case. Ollie is a member of Mensa and is always stating unusual facts, mostly at the wrong time. It is brilliant how the author has developed their characters and I think this is one of the best bits of the book. If you want a quick and easy read this is the one for you.

As with the 1st book in this mystery series, it took me awhile to get into the story. So many odd characters and hard to tell the good guys from the bad guys. But Judge Carew and his research assistant Ollie are great characters both going to any lengths for each other and to find the Judge's fiancee. There were many twists and turns, but ultimately the good guys came out on top. There is a cliff hanger at the end that leads into the next book. I definitely would read more in the series.
I found this book worse than the first one. I finished it but but glad it was done. Understandable why it was free. Characters silly, their names are sillier and the plot is ridiculous. It is so repetitious that on lot's of pages you can read one paragraph and skip the rest because it has been said many times before. Sequel, no thanks. Giving this book and author a one rating is too good.
5++++stars REALLY INSANE, THIS WAS SO TWISTED, I HAD TO KEEP RE-THING=KING EVERTHING I THOUGHT I KNEW. THIS IS BK#2 AND CRAZIER THAN BK#1 THESE ARE THE ZANIEST CHARACTERS I’VE EVER READ. BUT I LOVE THE CONVOLUTED STORYLINE ALL THE CRAZY CHARACTERS RUNNY AROUND IN THE BOOK. IT WASN’T EASY TRYING TO KEEP PACE WITH ALL THAT GOES ON.
I really had to struggle to finish this book because it became so monotonous with the two main characters arguing with one another throughout the book . Maybe if I read the first book I would have felt differently . Not really interested in trying to read it .
T h e Judge and Ollie are quite the team. This book has enough humor to make you laugh out loud. I have read book one , it was a great book to keep you reading and looking forward to next book.
Judge Rosswell is in it to win it! He and Ollie uncover a bizarre network of imminent concern today also. After uncovering the secret network, how do they stop it?
In this second book of the Judge Rosswell Carew Mystery series, we find the Judge thrust into a murder mystery as he sits of the balcony of his bed and breakfast room in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri, where he has been searching for his kidnapped fiancée and working as a fill in Judge. Rosswell witnesses a woman's murder through his binoculars, but the local police chief quickly dismisses his account. The police chief also isn't too interested in locating Tina either.
As the Judge pursues finding the victim's body, he runs across his 'research assistant' Ollie, a genius (Mensa) who has a criminal bent. Ollie and Rosswell encounters '...disorder, disarray, and destruction...' as the cover says. There is even an oracle. When the duo realize they are chasing a viscous murderer from Rosswell's life as a Judge the suspense tightens.
This book was better than the first which was terrific. I was compelled to read it in one day. I can hardly wait to read the next volume out in 2014 entitled 'Bloody Earth.'
I was gifted this book by the author as he knows how much I loved the first book. The review is my own and not influenced by friendships.
Early on a Sunday morning, Judge Rosswell Carew watches the Mississippi River ferry from the balcony of a B&B. A woman resembling Tina, his missing pregnant fiancé, is tossed overboard. He calls the Sheriff but his story is not believed. Unable to give up his search, the judge enlists the aid of Ollie, a brilliant, eccentric, almost trustworthy assistant. Together they seek out some of the colorful town characters: an old lady who speaks in riddles, dopers, midwives. They explore caves, find hidden passages, and escape a wildfire in their efforts to find and rescue Tina. This story, the second in a trilogy, reads well on its own. Lots of twists and turns until the reader wants a score card to separate the good guys from the criminals.
I love Bill's books. These are perfect summer afternoon in a hammock books (which does nothing to explain why I waited til January in Missouri to read it), or lazy weekend books. The characters are fun and interesting, the mysteries are just tangled enough to keep you guessing, and Rosswell is so dorky that you can't help but love him.
Better than the first book in the series, but too many things were taken for granted. It seemed to me that a fair amount of time had passed between the two books and that the events between them were important and significant. I'll admit that I may have missed some things early on in the book but I think another chapter or two at the front end would have been helpful.
Having read the first book in the series, I was intrigued to see how the continuing storyline would unfold. There were a number of twists and turns in the plot and some of the characters seemed a little larger than life, but overall it all worked. Another enjoyable read.
