Brion Brides #3

Alien General's Bride

Rate this book
Nothing could have prepared her for the general...

This is a 100 k full scifi romance novel featuring a BBW human heroine and a growly alpha male Brion warrior general. It can and should be read as a standalone and has a guaranteed HEA ending!

Isolde Fenner had big dreams, but surprisingly enough, the universe was even bigger. Curvy and confident, she set out on her first intergalactic mission as a scientist from Earth, studying alien species. But she didn't even get to step foot on her shuttle when everything was turned upside down. The most powerful man in the universe wanted her. Her. And despite knowing better, she wanted him too. No one says no to the general. But she can't let him know that.

Diego Grothan is undefeated. Body, mind, soul - there is no one stronger than the Brion general, one of the most feared men in the universe. But even he finds himself on the brink of destruction when a human woman calls to him like nothing else. She is his. She simply doesn't know it yet. Not only is it unthinkable to want a human, but it might just be the push his enemies need to come for him. But Diego Grothan is prepared. Always.

Thrust into intrigue, war and hunted by enemies hiding behind veils, Diego must prove himself not only to his new bride, but the galaxy at large. It is no easy feat, but he is, after all, undefeated...

Will Isolde give into the mouthwateringly hot and equally as ferocious alien general or will fate make the decision for her?

I'm glad this book was free because this story piiiiiised me off.
I very much wanted to give only two stars...but the author *did* address my grievances at the very end...but it was more of a glossing over splinters.....(gritting teeth)

Isn't there some kind of unwritten rule for authors not to make their characters "sins" too great to overcome? There SHOULD be!!
IMHO, the Brion race are a bunch of physically attractive, assholes who lie, murder and steal....but feel no shame in it. Why would you ever make them your heroes???

"Brions were known for their honor" I have never considered a a warrior killing someone not a threat to them or anyone else to be honorable...but that's just me with my wacky opinions.

heh. These Brions did the following:

1) Found a planet named Rhea with an indigenous but non-advanced population on it. (Rhea is very *rich* in pretty much every resource needed. Food, minerals, gems, ore, etc...
2) The Brion began mining/taking/exploring every aspect of the planet for themselves in secret
3) Murdered any of the indigenous people from the planet who stumbled across them (Location 4620)
4) When the planet was discovered by another advanced race within their same "federation" and a research team was sent to explore this "unexplored planet" - the Brions destroyed/murdered that whole research team. (to keep anyone from knowing of their occupation of it)
5) When a second research team (along with a protective flotilla) were sent to Rhea, they were all murdered in transit.
6) The Hero knows it's a screw up but lies by omission to heroine by not disclosing this to her. Just hoping for some guilt-free poosy
7) Hero admits he would have murdered her as well if she hadn't been his fated mate.
8) Hero considers heroine not wanting to bond with him a traitorous act and gets a little pouty about it.

But of course, he's SO seeexxxxy and she just can't stop thinking about him.....and when he fights in a big fight, she decides she can't wait to screw this guy who has admitted zero remorse to these murders.

9) All the Brions "in the know" about planet Rhea agree the heroine needs to die if she won't jettison her scruples and ethics and LIE on their behalf so that no one finds out about them strip-mining planet Rhea for many years. (No mention of the murdered research teams and their accompanying personnel. Murder-schmurder.)

In the VERY end, the author glosses over that the "traitors" who pulled the trigger on all the innocent lives got killed, so -whew- everything's good there!

There is sex with the TOTALLY HOT, magnificent murdering asshole who has no conscience...and his ginormous schlong... But I was so annoyed with the story that I honestly skimmed those scenes. Couldn't tell you if they were hot.

Only recommended as filler

I give this book 1.5 stars because I didn't hate it, the general premise was intriguing but I found it hard to connect with any of the characters and the whole thing was 566 pages of utter tedium.

As usual, I started reading this book knowing very little about the storyline, I wanted to be surprised by the plot twist, character development and world building, if there are any. But all I got was bland characters, boring villainous hero dressed up as a good guy who spent a lot of time pouting about about the heroine's refusal to accept the honer of mate-bonding with him. His boring alien species were presented as honourable people even though they condoned the killing of innocent people to protect their secret research.

The insipid heroine was presented as well educated and super intelligent but she spends most of her time getting weak-kneed around her supposed mate and resisting the urge to have her way with him. She was the definition of wet noodle as she spent her time being told what to do and where to go. The rest of the plot revolved around boring villains, unnecessary and irritating angst, instalove, bland battles and the death of characters I couldn't care less about.

At 566 kindle pages, things got a very tedious fast and I found it unable to connect with the characters or care about their troubles. Even the battle scenes and love making between the hero and heroine left me feeling bored to tears and in the end I just had to skim-read to save my sanity and precious time.

The whole thing left me with a sense of meh, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

The book started off with promise and subsequently failed to meet the intentions of the author. Voxley laid out a solid story arc but ultimately failed to connect the outline to any real substance. The overall story felt hurried and glossed over. I was able to read this book for free and still feel like I should get a refund.

While the reluctance of the heroine seemed was annoying at times in terms of not communicating clearly a way to negotiate between the hero's culture and her culture and the villain plot was far fetched at times, overall this was an engaging romance with good world building, action, adventure and a sweet romance.

I don't know where to begin with this one. I can't stand books in wich smart educated women are reduced to hormonal teenagers by a hot guy. I am so annoyed right now that I can't even collect my thoughts so I am going on a rant. I don't know how a female can right women so bad that is if the author is a woman I don't know and I don't care. Don't get me wrong I like to read about diferent types of heros but this is a joke. The main female character doesn't do anything (well at least she doesn't do anything to the spot where I decided to stop). She just stays in her room and mopes around about how awful it is that a hot guy wants to spend his life with her and is ready to die for her. After that she fantasies about the said hot guy and that is it. There is a part in the book where I thought ok so she is going to do something predictable and stupid now and still she did absolutely nothing. The other thing is the fact that she is supposed to be like I said inteligent educated person chosen amongst the whole planet to represent us and not only that her area of expertise is languages and cultures. Her job is supposed to be mediator between different planets yet all of a sudden she doesn't know the main hero language that well not to mention she doesn't quite grasp his culture. And then come the part wich made me stop because my patience left me. Mild spoilers ahead: She finds out something about the situation she is in confronts the hot guy and when he asks her to listen because he is going to explain she acts like a 16 year old told him she doesn't want to listen and screams for him to Get Out. That was it for me I couldn't take it any more. The plot began ok but than just became silly like it is writen for teenagers. There was no chemistry between the main characters infact there was no feelings what so ever between anyone. There are this twins one is killed the other doesn't even reacts. The big conflic doesn't make sence and so on and so forth. I am sorry to say this but to me this book is just an example of how not to write stories.

I didn't hate it, but I can't really save it either. It's less than ok with that bond interfering with the plot. It's pretty difficult to take seriously any stories where the heroine's pants are wet, and her mind blanked by idiotic, unrealististic lust.

It may have been 2 stars, if not for having read an other in the series.

it didn't improve the second time around.

The couple: Diego and Isolde

Romance genre: alien
Part of a series: Yes (Brion Brides)
Length: 567 pages

Plot: Isolde is a human who was selected to go on a research mission to a new planet, Rhea. She misses her ship, though, and the only ship the station master can find to send her own is run by the Brions, a war-hungry, aggressive species that everyone is afraid of. She doesn't really have a choice, and when the captain of the ship, General Diego Grothan sees her, he knows she is his fated mate, so he's more than happy to take her (*wink wink*)
There are problems though: the rest of the the research crew is attacked and killed; turns out Isolde doesn't like not having a choice in her fated mate; the Brions actually want to kill her because of her research mission; there is a rogue Brionese senator and another Brionese woman who wants Diego; freaking Rhea and the politics - there's stuff going on behind the scenes.

Character development: It took Isolde a while. The idea of fated mates really isn't that unusual to humans, no matter what romance authors would have you think! We talk about fate and soul mates all the time. Just because not everyone believes doesn't mean we don't understand 0 that's just a pet peeve of mine in books where the human rejects the bond at first. Diego was a great character, but I do wish he wouldn't have backed off so fast - I love a j/p hero who just plow ahead (not in real life, mind, but in a book? Yum.).
My one complaint was that there were a lot of people to keep up with (besides the MCs):
Urenya – the healer, childhood friend of Diego
Aneya – jilted lover
Eleya general turned senator, refusing mate of Eren
Eren – Senator, villain
Faren – other general
Deliya – guard (ex of Diego but not jilted)
Narath – other guard, mate to Urenya
Usually the really turns me off of books. It started to here, and that's what cost that final star.

Would I read more from this author/in this series: Yes
Next book in the series: Alien Warrior's Mate

Can they bring peace?

The Brion are a warlike species. Their greatest general is Diego Grothan. He's never been defeated, but when he meets Isolde, a human scientist, has he met his match?

Isolde is a scientist on her way to another planet to do some research. When she misses her ship, a helpful agent asks the Diego to get her where she's going. That's when he realizes that she's Hus fated mate.

Well paced story, good premise, likeable characters. I've read this several times now. It's a nice, light SciFi romance to make you feel good.

Finally a sci-fi alien romance that I could finish reading! This is a full novel. There are a few typos but the price is right.
Intriguing world building but the focus is on the main characters. There is a lot of frustrated desire but it was refreshing to have the characters build a relationship before jumping into bed. There is violence resulting in death--warrior society.

I will read more from this author.

3.5 stars.
The storyline was interesting and I quite liked the world building. Unfortunately the heroine’s wishy-washy “I won’t be his gesha because he lied to me but I want to ride him like a stallion until I pass out” internal debates got very annoying. So did his “just get over it and let’s have hot monkey sex because you and I are inevitable” attitude.
The ending of the book dragged a fair bit too.
Overall though, it was a decent book.

Unsure

I was on a roll devouring it hoping to see how the characters played out. However, now that I'm done I feel blah. Everything was just okay for me. This didn't stand out for me like the beginning. Also this is the first book I have read from this author and in this series.

I read this in a romance bundle via KU that is no longer available and that included books 3, 4, 1, 5 and 6 from the series. Here were my thoughts on the bundle:

I really wanted to give this a 5, really. But there were a lot of little things, and a couple major things, sprinkled throughout that just made me make a star away. My overall I impression in very high, but I think these books suffer when read back-to-back or as a boxed set. The 1st and 5th novels were by far the best-- the characters, backstroke, and plots had more development and depth. The 3 in the middle felt short and flat, bringing nothing truly new to the table I.e., it's a nice read if you are familiar with the characters but I can't imagine they would read well as a stand-alone since nothing really big happens with them. Also, the first 4 books had some really bad editing errors. Only minor errors in the 5th.

***The Cons***
(Please forgive me if I misspell the names as I'm working from memory.) Also, potential SPOILERS.

Deliya's story is unremarkable because we don't know enough about her to care about her and the ending is incredibly perfunctory. Leiya's story is interesting because of the whole "opposites attract" thing, but too much time was devoted to back story such that the connection between them was harder to buy into. Eurinya's story had so much potential but came off as boring because it read like someone else was reporting on what happened to her, rather than experiencing the story through that character's perspective.

There are several phrases, concepts or themes that are so repetitive that they are irritating. I am sure that the reader did most of them so that anyone could read any one book and understand what's going on. However, for serial or boxed set readers it is annoyingly repetitive. It might have been better to include a one-page primer that new readers could view to understand stuff and experienced readers could choose to skip.

If you are offended by crass language, you should stay away from these books. I usually don't mind if appropriate for the context, but I felt the use of some terms actually took something away from a love situation where it is already hard to find the romance.

***The Pros***
The 1st and 5th stories were SO enjoyable that the cons did not matter as much to me. Those 2 stories made the read worthwhile and made them real standouts in this genre. The author's writing is fluid and comprehensive. The concept is creative and interesting. If I had read only these 2 books I would have rated it 5 stars.

Love that this was a full length novel, thank you very much!!! I've been wanting to know more about this universe and its final being delivered. Very exciting and also very appreciated.

Another solid set of characters that are easy to relate to, I especially found myself connecting to Isolde in this, as she is a human from Earth that has been put into a very unusual and dangerous situation. Reading how she dealt with this was not only entertaining but also had a realistic feel to it. Isolde's reactions to the events unfolding around her seemed very real to me and if the situation were actually real might possibly be something that could happen. I enjoy when the author makes their universe and its characters feel like real places and people, its helps me to connect with the story and get a clearer picture when I'm reading.

Diego gave me the opening into the Brion's universe that I've been dying for since the first book in this series. Reading how he thinks, acts and looks at the universe around him was simply amazing. I love learning about new cultures in real life, so learning about an alien culture pretty much rocks my world. And while I'm sure there is way more to learn about the Brion, this definitely satisfied some of my curiosity.

The story flowed very smoothly as events unfolded at a nice pace. Making this a very smooth, easy read. I think if I wasn't reading on my lunch breaks I would have devoured this in one day. Definitely looking forward to reading more.

Isolde is supposed to be a part of a research team to look at a new planet called Rhea. She misses her ship and catches a ride with the most feared warlord of the most feared race. Diego soon tells her that she is his Gesha and they are going to be together forever. Meanwhile there is a civil war brewing among the Brion's between those who believe they should keep the planet Rhea to themselves or share it with the rest of the galaxy.

This story itself wasn't bad, I liked the overall premise and some of the twists and turns...but I did not like Isolde at all. She was mean, judgmental, immature and every stereotype of a woman who wants men to be mind readers. She is nearly killed and a war is on the horizon and she still acts like her "not wanting" to be with Diego is the biggest issue. Which I also don't understand....She already confirmed that she really had nothing going for her in her life. no goals, aspirations and no really family or friends to speak of. I didn't really get what her reluctance was. Then she insists on going to Rhea, where she will probably be murdered, and accuses Diego of being selfish for not taking her there. I also didn't understand what the big deal was about the Brion's keeping Rhea to themselves. They are treated with disgust and contempt by literally every other species so I feel like the fact that they were willing to share it at all was a big step...but that's just me.

Too many words!!!

Overall I really liked the story. It was interesting and I liked how everything unfolded. However there were numerous times where the story dragged on. I felt the author either didn't have a good handle on the English language or was an English major and tried too hard with making the writing feel Tolkein-like or highbrow literature. Unfortunately this made many of the sentences feel awkward instead. So much so that I found myself reading many paragraphs over again to get an idea of what the author was really trying to convey. There seemed to be a lot of hinting in the words like the author was trying to lead us to her point so we needed to read between the lines when all I really wanted was to just state it plainly!

I am interested in reading the next series because Faren seems like an interesting character. I'm just hoping the writing gets better because looking at the ratings on Goodreads they get better as we get to the next book in the series.

Literally,I first started this book thinking that it was a run of the mill alien syfy romance series. Wow I was wrong, this lady is a wonderful story teller, she draws you in,with this heroine, who seems very insecure with herself, but is very educated in alien language and cultural ethnicity. So she's left behind on the station ,when her transport shuttle leaves and didn't wait for her. The General gets commandeered to take Isolde, but in reality she is his gesha, bond mate. So on the way to Ria, they find out someone shot the transport shuttle into pieces, the second one that was on its way ect ect. I can't give it all away but if you are looking for a book with action, romance, intrigue this is it! I'm looking forward to the following books in this series.

Great Sci Fi Romance, Love a Brion General

Nothing is quite as hard as world building, especially in space, where we need to believe the characters and the science, but Voxley does this really well when she introduces the Brions. They are just different enough for conflict, and close enough to be loved… and I do love Diego.

This is no insta love romance, that is still a fated romance, walking the fine line of the inevitable and yet not. Those prequels matter, and with them you get to struggle with our H and h. I really love it, the first and second time, and it made for a great launch into a massive universe of love and war.

DNF at 33%. Isolde hasn’t even left her room on the ship yet. There’s a ton of internal dialogue.

Things I know about Isolde:
- She has no passion for her career and no interests.
- She does not particularly excel at anything.
- She’s wishy washy.
- She’s jealous.

Things I know about Diego:
- He’s a mass murderer and a normal murderer. He’s good with murdering individuals or entire planetary populations.
- He’s a good fighter.

I have no interest in following their romance when Isolde finally decides to leave her bedroom.

I hated the snarky, sarcastic main character, Isolde. Always talking to herself and talking down to herself. Maybe it was supposed to come off funny but I found the character irritating. About half way in, the attitude changed, the snark dropped down to bearable levels, and the story actually started to become interesting. I would like to see what some of the other authors would do with the same storyline.

Loved this book. Perfect mix of tension and sorting out of wills. At no point do you feel like Isolde is a wimp, but she's not stupid either. Too many heroines suffer from either being wishy washy, or being so head strong they're complete idiots. Anyway - lots of testosterone from Diego, but all in a good way. You always feel that he respects Isolde, and this is still one of my fav books from this author.

FYI - not as fond of book 1 and 2, but this one shines, imo.

Great Read

I have read this book a few times. I love the way they meet each other. Even though the chemistry between the two of them is off the chain Isolde is reluctant to give in to Deigo Grothan, the most feared Brion general, until she knows him better. With her goal of reaching the planet Rhea and the Brions trying to kill her they encounter many challenges on their way to love.
If you like action and adventure along with your sci-fi romance, this series is for you.

Can’t stand the heroine or hero. There was nothing smart about the heroine. Can’t understand why she still wanted to go to the planet Rhea where multiple research teams die. She gets all upset because hero takes her away to keep her safe. Talk about TSTL. She was just a hormonal teen. Hero a blood murderer. Nope not for me.

There was a lot of unnecessary information in this book. It just went on and on. I skimmed over 50% of this book and still got the story.
