Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Winter 1944. Driven by a desperate hunger and the harshest of winters 15 year old Jordy Laatens is forced to find danger. Caught in the ruins of a crumpled building, he cannot escape. His captor, a big man in a warm green uniform, calls him a dirty thief and holds a gun to Jordy’s head. And in that moment Jordy knows he is about to die. His short life flashes before his eyes. He remembers the early years before the Nazi occupation, before the terror times, when his biggest concerns were his prank-playing brother and the daily torment of the school bullies. He thinks of his hard working parents, his scattered brothers and sisters, his friends from then and now. And of course he thinks of his best friend, a Jewish boy called Ebbie Maier and of the life they shared, before different bullies came to their country, ones who wore smart uniforms and carried guns; bullies who brought yellow stars with them and then ruined everything. The Star Stitcher is a story of family, friendship and the shocking consequences of war.
