Gaia è bella, egocentrica e infelice. Un giorno di novembre torna nella città in cui ha studiato, dopo un’assenza di dieci anni. A Pisa niente sembra cambiato, invece è cambiato tutto. Gaia ritrova gli amici di una volta e il suo amore dei tempi dell’università; ma a dividerli ci sono, ora, gli anni passati lontani e la morte di una compagna di studi, Virginia, avvenuta in circostanze oscure. L’inchiesta sul misterioso suicidio si snoda fra le vie della città e i collegi della Scuola Normale, fra ricordi sepolti e ossessioni che vengono alla luce.

Un libro dalla trama abbastanza semplice e scontata resa in modo estremamente cervellotico. La scrittura in generale non mi è dispiaciuta, ma troppi giri di parole e troppe riflessioni sul nulla. Un buon esercizio di stile.

Pisa vista dalla Scuola Normale è una realtà distante. Se ne ricordano i piovosi giorni di novembre, le palme altissime dell’orto botanico, il gelato sul Lungarno, l’indolenza placida degli abitanti con i quali non ci si confonde granché, perché i Normalisti vivono nel loro ghetto, con le pareti scrostate, i mobili vecchi e malandati, ricoperti da una sbiadita carta da parati verde acqua.
Un mondo di cose proibite e riti che si ripetono un giorno dopo l’altro: lezioni, biblioteca, occhiatacce ad ogni risata che rompe il silenzio, poi la mensa con le luci al neon e i piatti sempre più vuoti per dissolvere nella magrezza l’esuberanza di quei corpi ventenni. Su tutto prevalgono i riti del nonnismo e l’incubo delle notti dei processi contro le matricole. Sopravvive chi muta, come i pesci rossi dello stagno artificiale nel giardinetto del collegio. In pochi sono sopravvissuti all’esperimento dei piranha gettati nell’acqua melmosa. I sopravvissuti sono diventati enormi, i ventri rigonfi, tesi, teste e pance trasparenti, i denti sviluppati in maniera abnorme. Sono sopravvissuti ma hanno perso la loro identità. Non sono più pesci rossi.
Ilaria Gaspari racconta tutto ciò attraverso la voce della bella Gaia, a distanza di dieci anni dal diploma, e seguendo la struttura del noir. Ci sono due suicidi, c’è un amore intenso, tante ossessioni, l’amicizia, la paura, l’inadeguatezza di essere al mondo.
La Gaspari ha uno stile ricercato ed elegante ma che a tratti ho trovato un po’ ripetitivo. Un paio di volte ho avuto la tentazione di mollare la lettura: mi sembrava di aver colto il messaggio che l’autrice stava lanciando già a metà libro, e non vedevo la necessità di dover arrivar a pagina 191. Poi l’intreccio noir ha prevalso.
Forse perché l’ho letto in giornate grigie, quelle dal cielo incerto, quelle in cui pensi possa iniziar a piovere da un momento all’altro, ma poi non inizia mai. Forse perché anche il mio umore in questi due giorni era un po’ grigio. Forse perché ce l’avevo col mondo intero e prima ancora con quella parte di me che non riesco ad educare. Forse per un po’ tutte queste cose, Etica dell’acquario m’ha messo addosso una gran tristezza. Ma forse era anche ciò che voleva l’autrice.
Esordio narrativo interessante, ma mi aspettavo qualcosa di più.

The main character is Gaia, a young girl who is forced to back to the city of Pisa after a suicide, in the city where she studied at the "Normale" in this occasion she will meet her old friends.

She is the main suspected by the police, it isn't clear the border between suicide or homicide. The story is not linear but it is continuously alternating the temporal planes, it is a story of love, it is also a drama that narrates the steps between towards the adult life.

Philosophical Reviews:

The villain of this story is an idealized fisherman who catches Gaia and then throws her into the Tyrrhenian Sea, in my opinion this is a synonym of her adult life, and her obsession to be outside the peaceful water of the aquarium.

After then years Gaia is forced to back to Pisa for an interrogation due to the suicide of two of her comrades.

From a philosophical point of view, it is interesting to analyze that the real dead is she with her old friends, they are alive and beautiful, their beauty is at the peak. They are adult they cannot change the past, they think about their selfishness for not having act properly as good friends, which would probably have changed the future, in short, they have behaved like fish swimming without thoughts in the aquarium, and not, as human beings.

The second part is the most interesting, due to the description of Virginia and her relationship with Gaia, they are friends for the skin but also bitter enemies, in my opinion a part of Gaia died with the Virginia's suicide, what mean for a living being assist to a suicide of a close friend? isn't she live in a limbo between life and death? the drama is that Gaia is conscious of being dead.

Literary Criticism:

The story narrated in this philosophical fiction with some traits of noir, is the story of Gaia, a girl who studied at the 'Normale' school of Pisa, in Tuscany.

In her mind remains indelible the aquarium that was at school, it's used as a metaphor, it means a return to the past where the life of the fish is protected by solid glass.

After ten years Gaia, Marcello, Cecilia, are at Pisa, the reason for the repatriation is not pleasant, they are in Pisa for a very serious fact.

As the events unfold, the reader will enter into Gaia's intimacy, will fall in love with her , she is a beautiful girl, but will also be distressed by Gaia's thoughts.

During the narration there are flashbacks between Italy and Switzerland.

The main theme is the anguish for what could be done and not haven't done, at the center there is a female friendship.

This story is told in first person, by the Gaia's voice.

The reader will have a very particular image of Pisa, through the eyes of a student and then adult, but not as a tourist, where everything is magnificent.
It is a circular novel in the sense that the first phase goes very well with the last "For a long time I thought I had to forget Pisa. Instead after every escape I always ended up returning"
It's also a story of love between Gaia and Marcello.

The exit from the placid waters of the aquarium is a synonymous of freedom but at the same time by a peaceful and protected environment, but not immune to tensions especially when some piranhas are introduced inside the aquarium, the devil will be defeated. The anguish is to live as adults.

Mi è piaciuto molto e in una maniera curiosa, è il primo di Gaspari che leggo. Lo trovo un esordio molto buono, con una trama ben congegnata, una tensione che tiene per tutto il libro, e personaggi con le giuste zone d'ombra. La lingua è colta, ma capace di "scadere" nel basso quando è il caso di farlo, rendendo bene il carattere della protagonista che rischia di esplodere a forza di essere contenuta. L'ho apprezzato anche perché ha diverse sbavature, diverse imperfezioni... tipiche, a mio avviso, di un esordio. Tutto ciò rende la voce dell'autrice autentica e "umana", una voce riconoscibile. Direi che non è un libro perfetto, ma è un libro riuscito e vero. Come se non dovesse preoccuparsi di dimostrare la corrispondenza tra i fatti vissuti e i fatti scritti, perché le due parti aderiscono fin troppo bene tra loro. Da lettore è una bella sensazione, non scontata.

É un bel libro che intrattiene bene. Sicuramente parla a chi ha vissuto la realtà dei collegi di merito. Sono tornata lì, sugli scranni della mensa mentre osservavo le povere matricole che subivano, le nuove coppie che sbocciavano e i vassoi vuoti delle mie compagne e ho pensato che mi sarebbe piaciuto avere Gaia seduta vicina a me

Se non avessi passato cinque anni tra Timpano, biblioteca e D'Ancona probabilmente non avrei letto questo libro, e mi sarei perso una trama scontatina e personaggi che riescono a essere allo stesso tempo scialbi e macchiettisticamente sopra le righe. Ma cinque anni a Pisa li ho vissuti e quindi ci ho ritrovato, dopo più di dieci anni, vive come non ricordavo di ricordarle, le atmosfere, i riti, le paranoie e il gergo della Scuola. Certo, ne viene fuori un'immagine grottesca e esasperata della vita in Normale, della sua bellezza e delle sue miserie; ma è un romanzo quindi l'esagerazione ci può stare.
