Cat Island #1

Gloria's Inn

Rate this book
Hayden Tate suddenly found herself in a world unlike any other, when she inherited half of an inn nestled away on Cat Island in the Bahamas. Expecting something like the resorts found in Nassau, Hayden was shocked and a little disappointed to find herself on a beautiful tropical island undiscovered by tourism. Hayden reluctantly begins to adapt to a simpler way of life found on the island, and her conversion is often comical.

Not only did Hayden's aunt leave her an inn, but the company of her former business partner as well. Strange as she is beautiful, Adrienne turns Hayden's world upside down in many ways. Hayden quickly learns that being with Adrienne will always be an adventure.

The tranquility of the island is shattered with the disappearance of a mysterious guest. Hayden and Adrienne soon find themselves at the center of a murder investigation, fearing for their own safety and the lives of their guests. Eager to rid themselves and the island of a ruthless killer, Adrienne and Hayden decide to conduct their own investigation. The eclectic mixture of guests and staff make their efforts both interesting and humorous.

Born in 1965, Robin Alexander grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she still resides. An avid reader of Lesbian fiction, Robin decided to take the leap and try her hand at writing. It didn't take long for her favorite hobby to become a full-time author.
Since her heritage is Scottish and Irish and she’s allergic to seafood, she’s considered an honorary Cajun. When she’s not writing, she’s exploring her state with the top off her Jeep in search of the small towns on the water that inspire her.
Robin is awkward, sometimes shy, loaded with anxieties, accident prone, dangerous with power tools, and has been known to make idiotic decisions. She has been fortunate enough to turn her shortcomings into the hilarious characters you’ll find in her novels and short stories. Her passion is writing funny tales about falling in love, being imperfect and reveling in friendship.
Robin is convinced she has the best job in the world, and she’s extremely grateful for her fans who support her and enable her to do what she loves.

There is a high likelihood, however it might break my own rules (Eta: That I don't judge an author, good or bad, based off of just one book), that if I had read this book first, I would never have read another book by Robin Alexander. Which would be very unfortunate as I've mostly loved everything by her (which is why I have that 'don't judge based on one book' rule). But this book? Good grief.

The only reason this book didn't [eta: initially] get a 1 star rating was the bits of humor scattered here or there that actually got me to laugh. From beginning to end this book frustrated me. Literally, if this hadn't been an Alexander book I wouldn't have been able to make it past that mess that was the opening of this book. Granted there was a patch there immediately thereafter that was fun and amusing but . . . gah. This book.

The women in this book acted like they were college freshman at spring break trying their damndest to get onto 'Girls Gone Wild'. Gah. The first batch of visitors literally sexually harassed the inn owners, Adrienne and Hayden. They both liked and disliked it, but they didn't want to piss off their guests so . . . gah. Second batch of visitors turned this into a weird stupid crime caper.

Despite what I said earlier, I'm seriously considering dropping this back to say, 1.5, just so I can click on 1 star on GoodReads. Have 0.5 for humor.

And to think this, and the two sequels I already own, are the last books currently in print by Alexander that I haven't yet read. I think I'm going to go be ill. There are actually 4 books, now that I look into it, that I haven't read by Alexander. Two I don't own, then the two sequels to this book, that I already own.

ETA: Noticing that I have already rated one of Alexander's other books 2 stars, gazing upon it, gazing upon this book, thinking about it hard, I will in fact lower this book to 1.55.

Rating: 1.66 1.55

Fun island shennanigans

I found this early R A work fun to read, but I can see how in the following years she honed her craft to write stories with more sucessful wit and amusement. Still I did really enjoy it and I have already purchased the next in the series.

4 Stars

4 Stars because I enjoyed reading this light, funny, totally bonkers book about lesbians in a remote island getaway.

I liked how the author sequenced the story. It added a layer of thinking for me.

The group of lesbians were totally insane. Like, I felt it was bordering on harassment (just if it was me and I didn’t want to do the things they were making the characters do) but it was also fun and totally crazy?

The mystery bit of the story was intriguing and fun to follow.

There’s one bit that I kind of cringed - some terms were probably ok to say before but taboo now. It’s a personal thing. Nothing major.

Meh. This wasn't terrible and wasn't great. Billed as a mystery, the mystery doesn't show up until about two thirds into the story. The set up would have been better if the characters weren't so two dimensional. The bulk of the story was a love story or a sex story, couldn't really tell what was more important. The sex wasn't horribly written, but like in a lot of erotica, it was pretty unreal.
Don't go in expecting much, and you may enjoy it.

I read a third of the book hoping it would get better but instead it kept getting worse, so I shelved it. I finally read some of the other one star reviews and I concur with them. I am also happy that I've read so many of Robin's later books to realize that she has come a very long way in her writing. There were hints of the humor that I love but even that was not enough to get me to finish it or to take a chance on the others in this series.

JI'm going back and reading old books by Robin because she has the funniest lesbian books I've ever read. It's rare that I laugh out loud at a book. This one read different though, the summary... and so far the book, I haven't laughed but it's a mystery. I haven't finished it yet... maybe 25% but I am hating Adrienne. She has been so not nice really, at least not friendly, and she can read Hayden's thoughts and she's still not nice? Now she's pissed because Hayden didn't immediately believe that she could read minds? Who would?

I'm going to finish the book because I bought it, and I like the author, but it's the first time I didn't like a character in one of Robin's books. And if it was an unlimited or cheap and by an unknown author I would stop here. I'm really happy I didn't buy the sequels when i got this... i almost did.

Hayden has been nothing but easy going and friendly when her entire world flipped and she got handed a job at a shitty resort after her family member died and Adrienne is acting like she's a burden. and Hayden I'm sure is going to apologize for not immediately believing in the paranormal... it's not even like she made fun of her but I'm sure she'll apologize for not suspending her lifetime beliefs for a near stranger and they'll eventually hook up so I really hope Adrienne has an excuse for her shitty behaviour and makes a 180 so i can adjust my rating.

Also Adrienne got pissed about Hayden not immediately believing her mind reading skills even though she's a stranger... and rushed off to the boat supply pick up making Hayden have to rush, but then went home and hayden who had only been there a couple days had to go unload the boat... what did Adrienne do go cry? And before their walk Hayden thought she wanted a nap so she made her walk, then run, gave her a shitty attitude, and made her unload a boat... and sure enough Hayden apologized... twice, because the first one was thrown back in her face with a "it's okay I'm used to people acting like you" attitude. This is ridiculous. Adrienne is a bitch.

Okay I read some more and I have to lower my rating. I don't think this book would be written after the me too movement. A bunch of lesbian predators. A girl says she doesn't like getting naked in front of people so a bunch of strangers get her drunk take all get clothes off and throw her in the lake, and dunk her a bunch.. and they must be easy older than college age it sounds, and that's just one example of the predator lesbians. Also not safe at all. Might as well drink and drive. I am not liking this book at all. It's safe to say that the newer the book is for Robin the better it is because she has some of my favorites but this is awful.

And I just want to mention one other scene.. it's like 8-12 lesbians or something. They strip to do body shots naked waist up. They force the owners shirt off and bra even when she fights against it. If a group of men ripped off a womans clothes and forced her to do body shots? These are strangers. It would be sexual assault. They are women. it's STILL sexual assault and what I'm suppose to enjoy this? Maybe if they were 22 and like lifelong friends but this it's just not ok.

Also is the one who ordered her to put peroxide on her bite a dr? Because I have doctors in my family and it's been known for decades, at least my lifetime, not to... you can use it if you don't have like alcohol or antibiotic cream but you have to clean it of and she wad taking a bath, it's bit more affective than soap, this had been known for decades... a doctor should know.

Oh and a hospital wouldn't strip a patient and leave her naked. And they Hayden wants to die the useless, rude, creepy handyman and Adrienne won't Jerry her because she's afraid how he'll react?

And Adrienne has yet to get better. She should not let the guests harass Hayden. She knows them and lets them do it and is just basically like "yeah they're like this you have to deal". Also she is like my mind tells us we're soulmates so you have to accept that and then the next day lets a guest hang all over her and leads her on, and her excuse is I wanted you to get jealous so I know you wanted me... even though you went with my BS soulmate thing right away and I can read your thoughts. She sucks so hard. I might not be able to finish it.. you should be able to get a refund on a book if it's killers than half read. Hope it's going to better with the mystery... if I make it that far.

One more thing... the couple stays for a week with everyone else. Then wants to stay a for a few more weeks and they get to for free? And Adrienne offers this without asking Hayden who owns it too. The utilities, food, stuff that costs, this would make them lose the profit of basically the whole lesbian group. Makes no sense and is just rude to do without Hayden's input. Though she would agree because she's become Adrienne doormat. Well she lets them all boss her around even though she's the boss but she'd do anything for Adrienne like apologize when Adrienne was wrong. It's been a week!! And I'm thinking her aunt hated her to leave her this woman with this resort. She even gave her a massage when she was the one beaten up in the hospital too sore for sex and she's the one giving a back rub. Ugh.

I know I'm being ridiculous at this point. But I have such high expectations and everything is pissing me off and I'm now just bitching about stupid stuff. but this book is full of stuff you shouldn't do, shouldn't let someone do to you, shouldn't accept, and shouldn't enjoy if you were against it to start... at least not like this. So much doesn't make sense. Adrienne sucks. The lesbians are predators. I'm going out on a limb here and say Robin was just out of college or fresh out when she wrote this.

Seriously though back to the peroxide. They said peroxide and antibiotic cream on it. If you put antibiotic cream on a sore and then peroxide after it won't even bubble because there's nothing for the peroxide to react to. the antibiotic cream took care of it. It makes no sense to put it on before or after. Literally no sense at all.

I just realized too this could have been fanfiction first because of the xena references. Which in that case it actually fits well in that world. If I read it in fanfic free I would have rated it much higher. Is that why Hayden gets walked all over by Adrienne? Because she's Gabby? A sidekick. Because fucking xena got away with too much BS too. This has to be it. Hayden is perfect and easy going and Adrienne it's bossy and self centered. It's a xena/gabby fanfic. I'd bet money on it. If I search and find this in the net somewhere for free I'm going to be so pissed.

I'm not going to leave a rating as I don't think it would be fair.....

I read this for a challenge

I have nothing against batting for the same team, but as I don't swing that way I don't really get it... I read a few M/M which were ok... but reading the female persuasion really isn't for me and this had a lot of sex in it....

Still a sweet romance with some colourful characters.

I’m a huge fan of Robin Alexander and have been working my way backwards in reading her books. This one just didn’t hit the mark for me. It seemed like a choppy story with too many storylines crammed together. I honestly didn’t feel the chemistry between the two main characters. If this is your first book of Robin Alexander, don’t give up. I absolutely love her other work. I usually read one of her books in between intense books because they tend to be sweet, hilarious, and feel good stories.

DNF at 40 odd percent.

Once the lesbian girls gone wild gang turned up and were basically assaulting eachother, taking off other people's clothing, forcing intimate acts and essentially having orgies, I couldn't handle it.

Call me a prude, and thats fine by me. I suddenly felt no more respect or care for the two love interests for going along with such smut.

I mean really who wants any sexual encounter to be drunkenly forced by others in the room who are watching and instigating? Gross!

It would be all well and good if there was consent involved but there was no mention or talk of it and it crossed the lines of what I would consider consensual.

Drunken forced sexual forays without consent aren't funny, that's assault.

An unusual romance

A completely different plot with a few twist and turns. Inheriting half of a Carribbean Inn, some crime, and some god romance and an HEA. This is the different type of novel that Robin Alexander write and that I really enjoy reading.

It was mostly easy to read. Humor adds a nice touch to the story. However, it feels like something is missing, as if it's all somehow frivolous or something. If you just want to distract yourself, if you won't expect much, then the book will be interesting. Personally I will be reading the sequel, of course.

This is a super fun story that will have you laugh out loud at times. It is a "love at first sight" kind of romance. But the story is about so much more than romance. It is about found family with a bit of a mystery and suspense thrown in. Adrienne and Hayden have such amazing chemistry, in opposites attract kind of way.

It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. The story just didn't grab me, despite an interesting premise. Grammar and punctuation errors are what finally sealed it though. Every page had at least one, and most had a lot more. I just couldn't keep punishing myself like that...

I'm glad I read other books of hers before this one. If this had been my introduction to the author I doubt I would have given her a second glance. Her more recent books are so much more polished and very enjoyable to read.

Dismissing the few grammar errors and the many punctuation flaws, this book was very entertaining.

For the most part, the story is very simple: lots of fluffy romance between two beautiful gals. The crime mystery attempt put me off, but the scenery and characters were lovely. I found myself chuckling a lot, and even laughing out loud more than once. For the rest of the story, I just grinned.

In technical terms, Gloria's Inn failed, but if you are looking to feel good reading a lighthearted story and don't mind technical errors, nothing will stop you from enjoying this book.
