Back home, there wasn't a woman who could say no to me. There wasn't a woman in town that could convince me to go back to my place instead of theirs. Once I blew my load, I was gone. I didn't have time for love.
But this isn't back home. This is the middle of a God damn war zone and I haven't scored a woman in months. The pressure built up between my legs is unbearable.
Then she comes around with that smokin' hot body. Taunting me with it every chance she gets. Worse yet, the damn woman won't shut up. Of course she's a reporter. Of course she wants answers. She's nothing but trouble.
If only I realized just how much trouble. This girl turned my world upside down and I didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.
HOSTILE is a standalone romance with hot sex, strong language, and an HEA.
I received this book for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed this gem of a book. It had everything I wanted in a military erotic-ish book from the hot soldier to a little bit of action and less not forget a HEA. Adriana is this journalist that has been rescued by the Americans in Afghanistan, although she feels like she could've handled herself there and is a little bitter that the government is making her leave the country. Derrick is this hot specimen of a man/soldier in the Army that puts his country first and just wants to serve honorable. He has been placed in charge of keeping Adriana safe and getting her to the next drop off point. The only problem is that he's extremely attracted to her and with the multiple tours in the desert he's definitely been on a dry spell with the ladies. Things happen and the two are forced together and must try to stay safe in the heart of the city surrounded by the Taliban. I questioned some of their actions while they were together but given the circumstances and not knowing whether you are going to live or die, I guess I would've made those same decisions. This book had likeable characters with great chemistry and some steamy sex scenes. You should definitely give this book a chance.
I'm honored to reseive a copy from the Smutpire press for exchange of a honest review. Truly honored!
I loved reading "Hostile"! It was so pleasantly easy to read, never left me hanging or boring. Instead I was captivated by the storytale, by the situations the chatacters where into, living me no space to think things different than they where, but most of all, I loved that Leila wanted both of their POVs to be in the story. The way the two main characters complements each others story is the most welcome part inside a story. Furthermore, Leila's writing was what I always said about uniqueness of writing. It's great to be connected easily with the story and the characters, but it's greater when you wished the story to never ends. Even if there wasn't strong emotional situations into the story, it was a great story to read.
So what's happening in the story?
Adriana is a journalist. She wanted to tell stories, to give voice to those that nobody would listen, that's why she went to Afghanistan. She was into a story about how families live there in the middle of a war, something that american people don't see offen, but she was detained by american military. Waiting, with few other americans, to be transferred to another area and back to US, it was something Adriana wasn't interesting in but she couldn't do much about it. However, she didn't kept her dislike for herself! Even when she met Corporal Watson, the handsome Cosporal Watson, she couldn't behave herself. She was reactive and scathing in her comments about the reason of her hostage. But she couldn't knew better!
On the other hand, Corporal Watson was, what I imagine, a hot militaly can be, not in a bear size but muscular, training, strong and deadly hot in his uniform. Not to mention his captivating blue eyes, his dark hair and sexy stubble! He was there about four months and his mission this time was to transfer few americans back home. It was a tough job to accomplish but he had to do it, and knowing there was a woman between the americans, made it even more difficult to him.
The escort to the border failed! On this side of earth, you are going to make it or be dead because, Talibans are everywhere, armed and dangerous for every foreign be on their land. Their vehicle was attacted by a Taliban and they had to continue by feet to the next village, wishing to find an american base and save themselves. But they had to splite, arranging to come back on the same spot, at night and plan their next move. Watson and Adriana stayed together, trying to avoid the heat of the desert, the residents and, of course, Talibans. It was difficult, and when they came back on the arranging spot and no one was there, things changed dramaticaly! They were now alone!!!
Every page was intense! Every thought, every scene, what every situation Adriana and Derrick had to deal until the end, was real. They didn't lost their courage and their target to stay alive, even when things were "life or death". That part is beyong words!! And the sex was necessary! When you don't know what next day will bring and you are alone with a man (or a woman) you are connected somehow with him (or her), then sex is fully justified. And both had so tanglible chemistry! It was the reason I wanted them to stay together and have a happy ending...after what they been through.
Don't miss that book!! If you like militar adventures you are going to love this one!
That is how the first two chapters start off in this book and really helps set the tone for what the story is about. Ariana (or Adriana based on the chapter titles--that part was annoying trying to figure out what this chick's name actually was) is a journalist that was in Kabul, Afghanistan when the Army swooped in to protect her thinking she was in trouble, much to her dismay. She wants to tell the story of the other side of the war, one from the Afghan civilian POV. To say that she is perturbed to be "rescued" by the Army is an understatement. All she sees is them interfering her journalistic pursuit instead of helping her.
Then we meet Derrick. He's a corporal that is annoyed to have to babysit a bunch of wayward civilians and take them to safety. He'd rather be fighting the good fight then dealing with this. The main thing on his brain right now is his lack of sex for "four fucking months". Used to getting his way with women is hard when there isn't any around--that is until one of these civilians in need of transport turns out to be a woman. A hot woman that looks like trouble. When he finds out she is a journalist it is even more of a reason to stay away, but the desire is immediately there.
On their way to another US base, they are ambushed by the Taliban. This gives the reader an idea of what it can be like in the middle of a war, especially if you have no idea of what is going on. My own brother is a Marine, so I can relate. The intensity of the situation drives them together as the group is separated and trying to make it so safety.
This is an intense read that will definitely have you on the edge of your seat. I always love when the POV bounces back between the two main characters. Great story telling and the first time I've read a book where the action is actually taking place in country. You won't be disappointed!
This was an incredible story, very original and captivating for this reader from the first page. Adriana was a journalist creating stories about afghan families and how they are coping with the war. Derrick was a Corporal in the US army, and the two are brought together when US citizens were collected by the army to send back to the states for their safety. Derrick takes Adriana under his protection and the rest of his troop protect the remaining 5 men who were also rounded up in the war torn country.
"Is there somewhere else you need to be? Are we interrupting your terribly important life by trying to save it?"
"Still, he was incredibly hot. I may ave felt an incredible loathing for the man, but that didn't change the fact he was smoking. His body was the kind that would always look better naked than with clothes, and his intense glare could sizzle like a hotplate."
"Like a trigger going off in his brain, Derrick snapped. The gloves were off now. He threw himself against me, pulling me against his body until we were two parts of a flame dancing together as one."
"Adriana was a fighter. She wasn't like the women I'd picked up in bars at closing time. She was feisty, she wasn't afraid of things, she took on challenges that most people- both men and women-would have run from."
I could go on for pages with these quotes, let me just say this book was suspenseful, sexy, scary and thrilling for this reader. I seriously could not put it down and am still dreaming about the characters and their story several days later. This is a must read love story of two people who need to save each other and reminded me of Jasinda Wilder's novel 'Wounded.'
This book was gifted by the Author for an honest review.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Now when I say I wasn't ready ,I'm promising you I was not mentally prepared for this book. I'm almost hundred precent sure this book took a few years off my life in a totally good way. This book is about a journalist ,our heroine Adriana , in the middle of Afghanistan .During the on going situation over there she is trying to write what she feels is the people of Afghanistan's true story. Our hero is a soldier,Derrick, bitter from several tour's and just tired of the ugliness of war. Derrick and his team of soldier's are supposed to take Adriana and some other Americans back to a check point location to get them out of Afghanistan . Things don't go as planed due to the on going situation/war whatever you wanna call it. To be honest this book rocked me,the pain coming from Derrick ,the strain of war on a soldier is something we rarely speak on or even discuss in a romance . We want our hero to rescue us ,but who rescues him? The sexual tension and drama Adriana and Derrick go through were written with so much real feeling ,it blew me away. The story had me from page one and I must say I would love to see a little more of Derrick and Adriana ,just to see how their future turns out. Please read this book and give it your full attention, wish I could have given it more stars.
Arc kindly provided by Smutpire press for an honest review. First of all who doesn't love hot demanding military men... I know I do that was part of what drew me to wanting to request this book for review always it was the description and the cover. We meet Adriana who is a journalist in Kabul wanting to get the people stories who aren't involved in the war but it all goes to crap when she is rescued by her own military guard. In steps Corporal Watson and he had my full attention right away. This man was hot. He is in charge of getting the civilians to safety and out of the war zone. This book had everything you could ever ask for an arrogant sexy man and a strong headed lead female. It has danger and keeps you sucked in until the last page to find out what is going to happy I'm so glad I read this book but one thing is I need more of them. I truly enjoyed this book and am very glad to read such an engaging story.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This is an exciting page turner. Ariana is in Afghanistan to do stories on the people and what their life is like during war times. Derrick is a soldier assigned to take Ariana and some contractors out of Afghanistan to be sent home. Except Ariana doesn't want to go home and resists, but ends up leaving with Derrick anyway. Along the way they get separated from the rest of their party after almost being blown up. They have to find a way to other Americans for help and along the way they have some hot sex, and Ariana gets kidnapped. Derrick and his team go after her, and even though Derrick realizes that in a short time he has become attached to her. But he decides that when they find her, he is going to be a jerk so that she'll leave without a problem. Romance and suspense, some snarky comments and some real life scares make this a very good book.
This book is written in the first person so the male/female leads. Initially I thought the military guy was a sex starved manwhore and she was a sex starved reporter... I got to 20 something % and my first reaction was exactly the same! Not much military action. I get the adrenaline rush but thinking about sex and pleasuring yourself in a war zone area...nah! Found it free.
Wow! I finished this book quickly, because I didn't want to put it down. I didn't think Derrick would want to settle down with one girl. Ariana seemed like she wants to settle and be in a relationship. I think that during the absolute horrific time in Afghanistan, it is amazing that two people fell in love. I'm glad that Ariana was able to change Derricks mind, and he fell in love with her. I would love to read more of their story.

If you like military books then its a good read. Its not really my cup of tea. Its written well and I'm sure there are lots of readers who will love it. It just didn't really hit the target with me. The action is OK and good sexy scenes but for me there was something missing but that in no way diminishes the authors work. Its a definite, its me not the author situation but hey we can't all like everything we read.
This book is exactly what I was hoping it to be! Action. Drama. Suspense . love . heartbreak
I read the book in one day ad didn't put it down till I was finished !
Its about a journalist who finds herself trapped an her only hope is a a**hole soldier who just happens to be super sexy an totally into her. I had to see if she lives to give him the time of day lol
Hot steamy and full of action, has it all from the very first page! I look forward to reading the rest of the series of books... if they are as good as this one is then i need to take a few days off work... oh" my gosh could it ever loving be any better? hmmm
A steamy, military romance. The tension throughout was good. I really liked the characters and how the author portrayed them. It was also different from some of the other military romance books I’ve read, it shows a different aspect and scenario that they can and have faced.
The plot was nice. I started it cause I was in the mood for something dark and smut which was fairly done. Not any insanely swoony moments to get me super interested tho. Nice pick if you're short on time and want to complete your reading goal.
Awesome book, Derrick is a soldier chosen to return some US citizens back from Afganisan . Ariana doesn't want to leave she is a reporter trying to tell people about the other side of war. But they get ambushed and Derrick and Ariana get split up they have major chemistry but Derrick will not fall in love. When shit hits the fan and Derrick and Ariana get separated he knows he has to save her. Will Derrick give into his feelings for Ariana before it's to late? I enjoyed this book was a little disappointed with the way things ended.
Going into this book, I thought I would be getting a story about a hotshot member of the military and the woman who is both the bane of his existence yet the one woman he wants. I'm so happy this book was much more than that.
I was so happy to read that Derrick was NOT a Navy SEAL. Please don't get me wrong, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the members of our nation's military (I'm an Air Force veteran who was stationed with special forces members from all branches of the military), but I was happy that the author decided that her hero didn't need to be part of an elite team in the military. He also didn't sign up to be a babysitter, but that was his current task, keeping Adriana/Ariana safe (not exactly sure what her is supposed to be), until she can be safely removed from the war zone.
I can understand Adriana/Ariana's wanting to get the human interest stories since she is a journalist, but I'm not sure why she was so upset when she was rounded up and taken to a safe location, she was in a war zone after all. And while neither she nor Derrick get off to the best start, they're both still insanely attracted to each other.
I loved how both characters were written, but I really connected with Derrick's character. You can sense the bitterness and apathy he's feeling, and how much of a toll being deployed is having on him. That's not something I see a lot of in stories: the flipside of what being deployed to a war zone can do to a person (it also brought back some memories from my deployments, some good, some not so good). The chemistry and sexual tension between Adriana/Ariana and Derrick was great, the actual sexuals were well written. The action scenes were also well written, which makes this book that much more enjoyable since our couple as an actual life-or-death situation to contend with. One thing that bothered me was how Adriana/Ariana reacted when she Derrick again. She knew firsthand how it is in a deployment zone, yet she acted like a spoiled brat towards him at first. Everything seems to work out, but I'm not sure I would classify this as having a HEA, with the way it ended it seemed more like a HFN. I do hope we get to see more of Adriana/Ariana and Derrick in future stories.
This was a really great book. I enjoyed reading this book and the story line was awesome. If you like military romance, then you will definitely want to read this book.
Not a typical military romance. This author relies on fascinating dialogue between and around the two leads. Sex scenes were well crafted and detailed. The action was near continuous and certainly grabbed me. While the relationship was center stage, it still allowed for the couple to develope a connection. Good book and story.
