I'm really torn on this one. I love the idea and concept behind this book and there were many interesting concepts and ideas. But I feel like it could also lead to discouragement.
In this busy season of littles, it is utterly overwhelming to me to read about all the programs and things they do in their home. Granted, this book is an overview of their entire life. But if I'm not careful, I can quickly feel like a failure for not having tea time every afternoon or eating by candle light each night at dinner.
Don't get me wrong - I love the idea of crafting a cozy atmosphere and a life giving home. But what about those times when you are barely surviving? What about those days that you can barely make it to bedtime? In those moments, on those hard days...you don't need tea time. You need Christ. You need to cling to the Gospel and tell it to your kids.
My fear with this book is that we would invest too much into creating our own life giving home, that we make that the focus instead of CHRIST! This life may be rough, and many days are, but our hope is in Christ alone!
Overall I do appreciate what the authors are sharing. But the book overall felt very long and drawn out to me. Maybe it's just not the right season for me and this book. I want to pick up again in the future and see if my thoughts have changed.
If I do pick it up again, I will just read the one chapter that corresponds with the month each month. Maybe then I would appreciate the suggestions more in bite sized pieces. Anything more becomes too overwhelming!

This is the book my heart NEEDED to read in this season of my life! I grew up in abject poverty and so homemaking in general has been a s-t-r-e-t-c-h for me, let alone "Creating A Place of Belonging & Becoming", the subtitle of the book.
I have five mostly grown children, and only one teenage daughter left at home, so I intend to use the January thru December format of this book and the accompanying planner to make these last two years with her as memorable as possible before she leaves the proverbial nest.
Plus, I have my future grandchildren to look forward to...so in a way, I'll be feathering my nest for them!

My Review:
Family such an interesting concept and completely overwhelming to someone that has never created one and yet most people want one. I know as a young newlywed, I was in no hurry to start having children. But after that first baby my mind went to everything "family". I was very interested in everything having to do with nest building and almost 20 years after the birth after that first child, I'm still going strong in that direction.
My family is the most important thing that God has given me and it has brought the most blessings to me and my soul. My husband and children give life to this old woman more than they will ever know. The authors of this book get that and they want to teach readers a better way to run their household. A household that not only gives life but nourishes it, as well.
Spiritually based a guide that will help you get the many rewards from your family, just as they do you! Beautiful book with really great suggestions to get you on the road to peace and tranquility and to nourishing the souls you have been entrusted with.

I was given a preview copy of the first chapters, and after reading that, I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the rest of the book. Sally and her daughter, Sarah, give an excellent summary of what a home can be, including the theology of the idea of "home," in part one. Following, in part two, is a month-by-month plan for creating a lifegiving home. If you are struggling to figure out how to make your house, flat, or RV a home, this book will inspire you.

What a perfect book to have found its way into my hands right now! As an extremely busy mother (and let’s be honest, what mother isn’t very busy?), I’m constantly juggling and trying to find a balancing act between work, home, kids, marriage, and life…and it seems like nothing is ever accomplished to everyone’s happiness. I’d like a big bowl of busyness with a side of guilt, please! This book puts it out there straight – forcing you to come to grips with the things that are truly important, and which ones can wait until another day. Which is not to say that I’m going out to quit my job because, after all, food and heat are important! The book helps to determine what is important in your world, and helps you figure out how to make it happen. It also helps to keep Christ at the center of those decisions, and you become the home maker (not to be confused with a housewife…they are two different things) that you crave to be. I really like the duel perspective, from both mother and daughter, that alternate throughout the book. Falling somewhere between their two ages, both of their perspectives resonate with my own life. The chapter on technology, by the daughter, is one of the topics that has been pressing on my heart for several years now. It’s a necessary evil, but most days it just feels evil. In that chapter, we are given suggestions and ideas for accountability and responsibility of technology as it relates to the home. I also love how the book is laid out with each month being a chapter. Based on the season, different suggestions are touched on for implementation into your own home. While we won’t adopt all of the ideas covered, there were many great small things that could go a long way toward uniting all members of the family and creating a more home-y home. This book is a must-read for all moms out there, or for anyone that just wants to invest into their home as a sanctuary for themselves and others.

I really wanted to like this book, but honestly, it's more of a family memoir and a lecture on common sense rather than a good source for fresh ideas. For example, in our digital age, this book doesn't offer genuine ideas about how to reconnect and balance homemaking with real, everyday life. They can talk about their evenings sitting reading aloud, but unless you constructed the perfect family dynamic from infancy, do you really see your family suddenly abandoning their screen addictions for family reading time? It's more of a snapshot of how one set of parents raised their children more than 20 years ago. I love the principle and the message, but I think they seem more enamored with their own stories than connecting with the struggles modern families face. (Note--they definitely acknowledge the disconnect of our digital-age families, but their own family experiences decades ago just don't translate to the current generation.)
It also is ridiculously repetitive. How many times do they talk about making tea, lighting candles, and setting baskets of books all over the house. Like I said, it's more memoir based and less in-touch with diverse families with a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. So much repetition made this so hard to read. I really wanted to love it, but it I just don't think it spoke to me.

Sally Clarkson has written yet another invaluable resource for our home. Looking forward to implementing this book in our home and sharing it with other mothers who desire to build a place of belonging for their families as well. Uplifting and encouraging and thoughtful, my creative fanciful spirit AND my real life schedule were equally challenged. Memories, hospitality, accountability, identity, responsibility---just a few of the topics that have been pressing on my heart for the last year or so and this book provided answers and helped guide us to ask better questions about those topics. I love the layout of this book and the way each month is laid out. Will be rereading this for years to come!

I discovered Sally Clarkson soon after I had my oldest daughter almost six years ago, and her writing has been so inspirational and encouraging to me ever since. I love her books, and this one may be my favorite so far! It is broken down month by month into ways of being intentional and pouring life and love into your family; and making your home a place of belonging, a refuge from the outside world. It is co-written by Sally's daughter Sarah, and I love hearing both of their voices and their mom/daughter perspectives coming through. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to truly make their home a Lifegiving Home!

This is an amazing picture of how and why a LifeGiving home is so important for our families. It also offers practical ideas on what I can implement into my own family. I love the stories shared throughout the book. Maybe you're lost on what might bring "life" to your home and your family? I highly recommend reading this for some wonderful insights!

I met Sally while at a Leadership Intensive in Texas back in September and the subject of our families being our biggest mission field was brought up. Creating an environment where our families feel welcome, loved, cared for, nurtured and invested in. I look at my family and know I need and want to infuse my home with LIFE. The life of Christ!!!
This is a must for ANY Mom out there. If you want to invest in your family, invest in your Home, make your home a PLACE TO THRIVE! then this book is for you. Sally and her daughter weave a beautiful story in with their words and it's such a blessing to be able to read these over and over again.

I am loving this book! What a miraculous way to invite someone into your home from the perspectives of a mother and her now adult child. This book brings clarity and eliminates uncertainty to those of us who know what we want; we just don't know exactly how to make it happen. The Lifegiving Home walks us along our path with Christ, as He molds and shapes us into the home makers or as “home builders” as Sally Clarkson states that we should be.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to get a sneak peek at this book while serving on the launch team. God spoke to my heart about making home an experience, not an activity several years ago. Having grown up in difficult home, I desire so strongly for my own children to experience a joyful, life-giving, loving, safe and nurturing environment in our own home. So much so that I have put many other dreams and gifts on the shelf to plug into my present ministry and calling in this season, our family. I've found that this type of mothering goes against many current cultural norms. As we seek to prioritize home, we mothers need and long for the motivation of Sally Clarkson. Thank you Sally for loving us through yet another amazing book! It's time to get my hot cup of tea and listen in for the treasures of advice and stories awaiting me!

I was given a preview of the first few chapters as a gift for being on the launch team and I gotta say this book is going to be fantastic! I love Sally! She always brings such encouragement and life to anything she does! I cannot wait to dig into the rest of the book!

I really wanted to like this book. I’ve really enjoyed Sally Clarkson on several podcasts but this book was at several points condescending, trite and repetitive. Honestly, I wish this book had been written by only Sally, I found myself dreading the chapters written by Sarah. I imagine the target audience of this book is mothers with children and it just didn’t seem like Sarah, a woman in her mid-twenties with no children, had experience relative to the audience. She was also often braggadocios and it had me rolling my eyes (“Nate and Joy are both singers and songwriters, recording and performing songs that express the challenges and grace to be found in the journey of life. I am more inclined to play accompaniment, although I compose an occasional instrumental piece”).
Sarah’s chapters droned on and on and seemed to have no real point. I got the feeling that she imagines her readers to be dimwits. She actually wrote two paragraphs on soup and bread, and what a good combination the two make. Ending the whole section with a nice punch to let you know that “fresh homemade bread is easier to make than you think.” eye roll. At one point, she writes about observing holidays celebrating those who served and makes sure to remind us that Memorial Day is in May and Veterans Day is in November. Her chapters are full of “don’t forget to do this” or “make sure you do this”, and it comes off as terribly patronizing.
In the chapter titled “A Heroic Heritage”, Sarah spends most of the chapter describing the importance of remembering your family heritage only to end with a flippant paragraph letting the reader know that if they came from a hurtful past, don’t despair, we can simply tell a new story and forget the past. I imagine readers who do come from abuse, like she mentions, do not find it that simple. The icing on top of the cake is that she paints herself and family as near perfect, Sound of Music-esque; it’s boring.
And it can’t go without mentioning that the book is overwrought with marketing for their other books. Areas of family life that would have been perfect to delve into in this book (24 family ways, for example) are cut short and the reader is told to read one of their other books. I would guess it is mentioned no less than 50 times that we need to go to their website to get this or that list. How much better it would have been to have the list in the back of the book for reference, you know, like every other book. Across two pages, Sarah references going to the website 3 times. It’s completely distracting.
All in all, I enjoyed the sections written by Sally and underlined several things but I would never recommend this book to any mother for fear of it being a source of comparison and shame.

Nunca he sido una persona "hogareña". O sea, me encanta estar en mi casa, pero no se me da muy natural eso de mantener la casa o ser hospitalaria.
Este libro me ayudó a ver mi hogar de manera nueva. No se trata del quehacer para sobrevivir, sino de crear espacios de refugio en los que podamos invitar a otras personas para ver cómo luce una familia que ama a Dios y sirve a los demás... sobre todo, para invitar a otras personas quién es Dios y lo que Él ha hecho. Para vivir la historia del evangelio en lo cotidiano del día a día, a través de comidas, lectura, juegos, conversaciones y tradiciones.
No tiene que ser muy complicado. Prácticas sencillas (como leer juntos) y elementos cotidianos (como unas velas a la hora de la comida) pueden hacer toda la diferencia. ¡Salí muy inspirada! Seguro lo volveré a leer.

I love Sally Clarkson's books. She always speaks to my heart and seems to know what I need to read when. I received an advanced copy of the book from the publisher and I have been enjoying the book immensely. I love her description of home and have always longed for a home like she talks about in The Life Giving Home. I love the perspective from her daughter, Sarah as well. How they have made each place they visit a home by adding special touches from their family likes to their personal likes. Home is what you make it. It isn't just four walls where we live, it's the place we feel safe, we feel loved, we long to be. As a mom, I can only pray my children feel this way. As I am enjoying my grandchildren, I pray they too will find great comfort, peace, rest and love in my home and long to come visit, even as they grow. I want my friends to feel welcome, to feel safe and long to visit my home. This book tells how Sally has made her home just that. I continue reading this book to find new ways to make my home like the one described here by Sally and Sarah.

I am on the launch team, so I received an advance pdf of the book. (Thanks, Tyndale!) As an experienced mom and homemaker, I have been challenged to do some things better. This book has caused me to think more about hospitality. Even though circumstances have been difficult and my family has not had our own home for several years (we've been renting) I can still do some things to make our home more comfortable and welcoming. I have limited myself because of money and circumstances, but Sally's statement that when "we invite someone into our home we are to take charge of their happiness for as long as they are under our roof" challenges me to do more for those who come to visit. The planning and little details are important. I am usually very pragmatic. I can do better for those who visit and those who live in my home. When I read about the many moves and issues Sally's family has dealt with, my excuses fall away. But the book doesn't make me feel like a failure or overwhelmed. The way Sally and her daughter cast the vision for a welcoming home causes me to think about things I can do - simple things - to make our home more welcoming, life-giving and glorifying to God.
To see Sally's daughter appreciating and imitating and expounding on the things her mother taught and demonstrated gives me hope that my children will also rise and call me blessed some day. Sally and Sarah are both very gifted writers, and it is a peaceful, calming, yet challenging, inspiring experience to read this book co-written by them.
To see Sally's daughter appreciating and imitating and expounding on the things her mother taught and demonstrated gives me hope that my children will also rise and call me blessed some day. I have been a fan of Sally Clarkson's writing since I read Desperate. I've heard her speak and listen to her podcasts. I sometimes think she is speaking right to my soul. The Lifegiving Home is a call to creating a place of life for your family and others who enter your home. It is a beautifully written and inspiring book by Sally and her daughter Sarah.

The title of this book puts forth a challenge to make HOME more than just a place to come in out of the cold but a place to become... to become whole, to become great to become all that God created you to be. Sally Clarkson offers encouragement along with great ideas to make this challenge a reality in your family.

The title of this book alone speaks volumes to my heart. In this book, Sally Clarkson and her daughter Sarah share what that means to them and give practical tips and ideas on creating an inviting home that serves as a place of refuge. This book (or at least the first few chapters, which is all I have read so far) challenges me to be more intentional in creating a place where my people feel free to be themselves with abandon, that shelters us all from the storms of life, and that nourishes our soul and allows all who enter to leave refreshed, refueled, and released to be whom God made them to be. The first chapters have encouraged me and fueled my "to read" and "to watch" list with nourishing suggestions. I am excited to read the rest!

I'm so grateful for Sally and her books! She is like the sweet friend and mentor you wish could just come over and chat...in book form! ;-) I long for our home to be a safe haven for my husband and kids, a place to grow closer to God and with each other, a place to have convictions molded and strengthened, a place where they can be nurtured and sent out to minister to others for the glory of God. I desire it to be a place that breathes life into their souls, and through this book I've been encouraged in some practical ways to do that! I received an Advanced Reader Copy pdf in order to give this review, but can't wait to receive my book. :-)

This book has been so inspiring for me so far. It's just the book I wish for whenever I read one of Sally's other books. It answers the question of how she makes her home as it is. Simply inspiring. I can't wait to continue.

The Life Giving Home. The title sounds amazing, especially to this Christian wife and mother. I wanted to love this book, but it fell flat for me. This is really a story about the Clarkson's life and traditions. It doesn't feel applicable to most of my life. I live in a house of males, and they are loud and active, and I love them. But I could quickly become discouraged and discontent with most of the suggestions in this book because of that. That is not my life. I also felt this book was very materialistic and child centric. I wanted ideas on how to love on my family better, not how to have a lot of books and food, which they went on and on and on about. There was only one very little paragraph about doing something for the husband in the book. There wasn't much about love in the book. And one thing that really annoyed me, and seems to be becoming more common in books these days, is to go to the website for the other ideas. It's so frustrating to me. I don't have a lot of time to be going on a website. Just list in the appendix, like books used to do. I want all of the information right there in my hands with the book that I paid money for. And I looked at the website. It's not like there is these long lists. They could have easily added it to the back of the book. I won't say the book is without total value. There were some good things in it, but definitely not what I was expecting for such a book.
