Harriet Rose Mystery books are full novels with an enticing mystery to solve. They are all stand alone reads. The following books are best enjoyed in this order:
Death of a Celebrity: Harriet Rose Mystery #1 Death of a Liar: Harriet Rose Mystery #2 Death of a Salesman: Harriet Rose Mystery #3
An over zealous and nosey woman with not enough to do.
I found this story to be a little outrageous and could not imagine that the police would accept her nosing around in a murder case. Normally she would be charged with interfering with the law. I would have liked to see see the writer being pulled in by just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. A different twist would have been easier reading for me.
This book was a delight. I’ve read a few books in the “Cozy Mystery” genre and I can definitely say, this book lives up to its title. It’s fun, has relatable fun characters, a beautiful cozy setting and a budding romance. There’s lot to offer in this book, I would happily recommend it.
In fact, I enjoyed the storyline and the characters. In some ways, Death of a Celebrity is reminiscent of Dame Christie's Miss Marple mysteries: small village atmosphere, busybodies, red herrings, and all.
BUT, there the similarities end. The book appears to suffer from a lack of proofreading by an independent eye. I will always forgive the occasional slip-up, but about 30% in, I found myself so annoyed that I began noting the frequency of errors. In no time at all, I had run across 8 more in just a few pages.
The biggest issue I have with the writing is that the heroine, in the clutches of the evildoers, thinks she is doomed because no one knows where she is. In fact, a couple of pages earlier, just before she leaves for the destination, we are told that she has texted her police friend, confirmed where he was, and asked him to meet her at the suspects' location.
A little extra work would have improved this book immensely.
Apparently anyone can write a book these days. That doesn't mean they should. The dialogue is so bad, it's painful. I don't know anyone who talks the way these characters do. There was also a lot of redundancy and over explaining that drove me nuts. There were random paragraphs thrown in the middle of various scenarios that had nothing to do with what was happening at that particular moment. The plot is good just poorly executed. All of the characters were annoying and unlikable. I was surprised to find more than one typo, too. It is clear the author didn't have an editor. I honestly don't know why this book has so many five star ratings. I'd give it zero if I could. Glad I read it for free and didn't waste money.
A cozy mystery but the real digging and research around the possible murderers are missing, which left you with the reveal at the end that no one could have seen coming only because it's consciously hidden. Not bad but could be better.
Right from the start the book took off! You could see the characters with her descriptions. It took several twists and turns. You will love the pace and the storue
As well as having several awkward spots, details in this book don't fully add up, so it needs a careful edit. Background details about her before inn time are contradictory a few places. Her reason for getting involved is Milly being blamed, but the only person talking about Milly when she declares this is her. And she's too much of an idiot for me with what she hides from the police.
I have this novel four stars because it is a great rainy day read. It isn't just a "cozy" book, it is comfy as well. Just enough characters to make the reader more willing to solve the mystery. The sense and feel of Cape Cod are good , felt very natural. Anyone who enjoys a rainy day or beach book will want to read this!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters and story were interesting and engaging. It keeps the reader guessing. I have to day that my favorite part was the bit about not blaring the siren. I never saw the sense in that. You might as well call them ahead of time. This book is definitely worth reading.
I love reading Cozy Mysteries & I liked the title & the cover. When sleuths & animals are involved I'm sold. I was surprised that Father & daughter were both involved & I also enjoyed the humor. I will be reading more. Loved it & at times I couldn't out it down long enough to cook dinner. 😁 My hubby would fix himself soup & sandwich💖
I enjoyed the plot, the settings and the characters. It's a fast and mostly easy read. I found it jarring there were several missing words or wrong words sprinkled throughout the book. I've purchased the next two in the series, so hopefully this improves. Overall, I'd recommend this book.
An enjoyable mystery although I did find the police acceptance of Harriet’s involvement in the solving of the crime a little far-fetched. It made me laugh that that the character was a writer who struggled to get her second book published, when this writer struggled with sentence punctuation.
There are quite a few typos in this story & mixed up wording that gets a bit frustrating. It is an OK story & a nice twist near the end but not keen to read more
This was a nice cozy read. Had me going a few times as to who the murderer was. Nice to read a book without foul language or being sexually explicit. Good clean read.
I really was enjoying the book. There were a few editing glitches, but nothing big. The story flowed and the writing was well done. But about 2/3 into the story, it just got confusing. The author would write something, then in the next pages or chapter it would be contradicted. Once I can see because of a rewrite, but the whole end of the book was messed. As an example, Harriet says that she texted the officer to meet her at the church, then on the next page, she is lamenting that no one knew she was there & the officer says he followed her. It got so confusing, I almost didn't finish the book. However, the book on a whole, especially if it got cleaned up, was a very entertaining read.
