MacKenzie K. Paxton has written stories for two decades but never had the dedication or determination to sit down and finish one until 2015.

The best advice given before settling in to write her first book was "write a book you would love to read." MacKenzie is fascinated with the men and women who protect and serve our country. Throw in some alpha males with protective instincts and the stories will practically write themselves!

4.5 stars!

After meeting John and Heather in Bourne for Emma I was curious about them. It was a little odd to read their story after it had already happened, but I understand the author had not intended to write their story. I, for one, am glad she changed her mind!

Overall, this was a sweet love story. While they were in a different place in their lives, it turns out they fit perfectly.

The build up (and sexual tension) went on a looong time. It was hot, but frustrating! Heather is a pretty tough chick. I liked her. I did not mind her eventual "giving in" to John because I was so happy for her to find a good guy that would treat her right. For being so far out of her comfort zone, I thought she handled everything really well. And at the end when John had his moment of insecurity/insanity - she did not immediately give in like all those other pushover heroines we hate. She made him grovel! Thank goodness!!!!

It is hard to talk about the story without giving away the plot, which I believe would ruin the story. But I will say that the inevitable conflict between them is a different twist on an important topic.

This is a nice and easy romantic read. I enjoyed the MCs, the story and even the twist toward the end did not throw me because all couples must have some bumps in the road! The epilogue was sweet!

I look forward to Rio and Raven's story (please)!

Safety Gang safe!

When I read this author's first book, I was immediately struck with two thoughts - she can write like nobody's business, but she's inexperienced in plot and character development.

After reading book two, I'm 100% certain -

She can write like nobody's business .

description

She took her original storyline and characters and went backwards in time to redirect our attention to a romance between secondary characters in book one. That takes a gut of iron to even try, and balls of titanium to pull off.

Mac, you have titanium balls!

Characters

My main complaint with the author's previous characters was that they lacked grit... A tad too Disney for my personal tastes.

Well, Heather & John are NOT Disney!

Yes, this is a sweet & cute romance. It has all those lines that make you go 'aweee'we' and keep a smile etched on your face. But, I never got that overly ewww'y-gooey 'perfect' fairytale vibe that I had with the first book.

Heather...

She's a saucy, sexy, independent, no-BS chick that you'd want in your corner for the good and bad times. I f'ing loved Heather. I couldn't wait to hear wtf would come out of her mouth next.

John...

John, oh John... I just want my own John ~ please, pretty please! John is that nice alpha male character that makes grown ass married women with 2.5 kids and a white picket fence swoon like a 16-year-old hormone factory at Justin B. concert. Enough said~

description

The chemistry and heat between John and Heather was like the periodic table caught afire! Get em' a shirt...

description

It's sexy and naughty without being raunchy or candy-coated. Pure perfection!

They do their own thing and march to their own music vs what "romance" is "supposed" to look like. I loved that!

I loved 'the wait'...

"It's going to kill us both, you know."

"The waiting?"

"No. The sex. When we finally have sex, it's going to be a fucking supernova and we're going to be incinerated."

Plot

There are a couple of tiny - ehh.. I hesitate to call them subplots- missions (maybe)?!? Anyway, these were short and basically just to further introduce us to the other RED cast. There was a tiny 'bad guy' scene.

Otherwise, this book is purely about the John and Heather romance build & development before book one, and we get a tiny glimpse of what happens after the end of book one for both John and Heather and Bourne and Em.

Writing

Technical

A few small grammatical errors, such as "9" not being written out as "nine."

A few typos, such as (31% for author reference) "...never been with anyone who has made me feel more important that you do."

Nothing at all distracting or that a second editing sweep can't easily fix.

Style

I loved the way the author let the story tell me, the reader, the story. I never felt like I was being told the story by the author or some phantom narrator. Great voice, inflection, tone, etc!

Dialogue is crisp, clean, concise sentences that flow naturally.

It's entertaining when it's supposed to be fun... Poignant when supposed to be serious... Hot when it's supposed to be sexy.

Pacing

The angst of this was so perfectly frustrating slow burn. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and watch them squirm under the tension.

description

There was a portion from *68%-*80% that was slow and flat for me. I'd have liked to see something climatic with a little umph happen here. John's freak out at lunch and the car chase didn't really provide that peak to carry readers over from midpoint to HEA.

My main complaint with the writing in the first book was that the author took WAY too much time mentioning mundane goings on like cooking, cleaning, and emails WAY too often. It f'd up the pacing and enjoyment of the story.

Avid readers want a focus on story and characters and to let the little details fit naturally into and around the story when and where they are needed for reader comprehension and enjoyment.

The author improved by leaps and bounds on this aspect, but there was still a few moments where the author gets caught up in the scene and overshares unimportant detail that 1) tells me nada about the character 2) adds nada to the storyline 3) and only serves to break the momentum of the story's flow and pacing.

Every story needs pacing breaks and scene transitions, but, unless you want bored readers, these types of breaks/transitions should be kept to minimal detail unless they themselves add some entertainment or value.

Here's an example of what I mean:

"I showered using the sample shampoo, conditioner, and soap that I found in a basket on the counter and dug a brush out of the bottom of my purse. There was a box of combs in the basket, but my hair didn't do combs well. Half an hour later I was dressed in my jeans and blouse again with my damp hair pulled up in a ponytail.

This is a simple scene transition break (point being she showered) and it doesn't need eight sentences to tell me:

'I showered using the sample toiletries from the counter. Half an hour later, I had my damp hair brushed into a ponytail and was redressed in my jeans and blouse.'

Again, I want to stress that this issue is much, much better in this book than the previous one, but I did want to mention it mainly as constructive criticism for the author's benefit in future endeavors.

Final Thoughts

I think the author took into account a lot of the feedback from book one and made tremendous strides to deliver. She is a talented author with a bright future.

I think she hit the nail on the head with her characters and overall romance plot - 5 stars.

Finding and delivering a plot peak/climax needs some work - 3 stars.

Pacing needs just a tad more work to make sure that non-essential scenes aren't overwritten in detail and in frequency - 4 stars.

Overall - 4 :) stars.

Congrats on book two!!! I'm excited to see what you do for Rio and Raven:::::)))))) Cheers, Mac

My thoughts:
The first book if this series Bourne to love Emma I thought the H stole the show with just how amazing he was. This book I felt that Heather took that title and ran with it. She was ballsy, real, down to earth, not afraid to say when she was wrong and stood up for herself when others were also. So basically she was a real woman that I would just love to sit down and BS with for a while. It made it feel like I was reading a story about a friend and I LOVED IT. The opening scene with her telling about a past sexual fubar was hilarious. I have been there and done that (not that particular situation don’t worry ladies) with friends and we still laugh at all of those stupid little stories.

It seems that the author has an innate sense of how to keep her characters on a path of “real life” and what do I mean by that? They don’t run up the freaking stairs when being chased by an axe murderer just to create some tension. IE over the top drama. Like opening the book up to a sex scene with OM or OW. A shoot out, torturing the h or H etc. It’s a given that your opening chapter needs to hook the reader but the new thing to do for authors is use shock value to keep your attention. It has gotten to the point that it just makes me want to put the book down. I do not think that is imaginative at all and I read to delve into someone else’s imagination. She is also great at keeping her characters relatable without going outside of a lot of comfort zones that seem to be the norm now. OOOOOOOOOK off my soap box on to the book.

So a few highlights. I really liked that she went back in time and wrote about a couple that was already together in book 1. I am not sure if this was by accident because she wasn’t going to write about this particular couple or if it was a moment of genius. I really don’t care because it was great!!! I am always waxing on and on in my reviews saying different formats, timelines etc bring life to your work. It gives it depth and a certain uniqueness that most authors don’t even touch. The characters sexual history was equally weighted, they both had been with many people and that was ok because they accepted it about each other without making a big deal out of it (Awesome! Sexual history should not be a plot point in books!!) Nothing was detailed and it was just about acknowledging they had a past then moving on.

The only negative thing I have to say is I felt that the first half of the book was a little slow. This could my own personal issue because I am not one to fall in love with contemporary novels and the majority of this book was contemporary with a little suspense.

It could have been because this was a slow burn. The couple do not have sex until almost the end. We did not get a lot of John and Heather time but it worked for what was happening in the book and they did what they could to get together. It all ties in well with the plot line and their character traits (both are very strong minded).

There was a lot of learning about R.E.D and internal monologues by both characters. I am sure it was probably a mixture of all of that. How could it have been fixed? Maybe some more texting/phone time between John and Heather is the only thing I can think of. I needed to feel their combustible mixture a little more to really delve into it. If they spent more time face time together it would have changed the book drastically so that wasn't an option.

One part just broke my heart and it had nothing to do with the main couple. Josh how could you!!!! Don’t worry ladies it’s not anything to do with the book just a sideline about a character that is in Heather’s life but it still made me sad. But even that sideline has a reason in the book to explain a point to the h. It wasn’t just thrown in. So I put my big girl panties on, sighed at my kindle and I am crossing my fingers that no books are planned for his character. I don't think I could read it.

Oh and to give John his due since I kind of went over the top on book 1 hero.. You are sex on a stick I might still prefer Jason but I wouldn’t kick you out for eating crackers either babe.

All in all I will be keeping an eye on you Mackenzie K Paxton. You have been warned, you have a new stalker.

~ Possible spoilers ~

"Every day you spend away from the one you love is a day wasted."

♦️BOOK: # 2 (takes place before book 1) - Can be read as a standalone. Full length.

♦️HERO: John Winters, 43--Ex-Marine, now head honcho at R.E.D. Security. Works excruciatingly long hours, he's thoughtful, sweet, protective. Tall, handsome, muscular and fit with dark eyes. Grew up in an abusive home. Celibate for almost a year bc of incident with a female stalker.

♦️HEROINE: Heather Jackson, 32--bartender/bar owner. Tough, feisty, independent, with a smart mouth and an aversion to romantic relationships. Barely escaped sexual abuse as a teen. Dark green eyes, dark red hair.

"I was crying. I wasted two seconds worrying about the fact that I was not a pretty crier before I gave up on the thought."

♦️PLOT: It's instant attraction when Heather & John meet at her bar but both are looking for different things. Heather is looking for some quick, down-and-dirty fun but John wants to take her out and get to know her. After some convincing, Heather decides to take a chance on John, and they come up with a 'no sex rule' till they've been on 3 proper dates. All is good, lots of sexual tension until John decides he can't give Heather what he thinks she needs.

♦️REVIEW: I'm really liking this series. Good writing, a sweet and sexy romance with a little bit of humor, a touch of suspense and some realistic and totally likable characters. Absolutely looking forward to the next book with Rio & Raven!

♦️EDITING: a few minor errors found

♦️POV: dual first person

♦️HEAT LEVEL: 3/5

♦️OW / OM ISSUES: none

♦️ENDING: HEA, Epilogue, No Cliffhanger

I'm really bummed about writing this review. :( I really liked book one, and was looking forward to John and Heather's story, unfortunately this one just didn't work for me.

There is "slow burn" and then there is moving at a snails pace where nothing really happens! They agreed upon a no sex rule until the fourth date, it literally takes until 80% of the book to actually get to that fourth date. By that time I was just skimming to get to the end.

I think this book would have worked better as a novella where things could have moved at a better pace. Still this author has a lot of potential, so I will most likely give her next book a try!

I really loved this story! Although I was intrigued to say the least on how it would work. As when you first meet Heather and John in book one they are a very happy and engaged couple. I was therefore really unsure of how this story would unfold and a little worried it wouldn't be as enjoyable to read. However it really worked, and I loved the fact it went back to the very beginning of the relationship, and covered in detail how they first met, as well as Heathers reluctance to go on an actual date with John, not to mention all the sexual tension, that built and really made the story more and more enjoyable and one I just couldn't put down!

I also loved how the story moved seamlessly into the present and to Heather and John finally getting married and am now really excited to read more from this series in the future. Especially as Rio and Raven's story is next! As for this one, I would happily recommend it to others, although there is no element of suspense, it is still a very gripping, enjoyable read and you certainly won't be disappointed.

I had this book in my TBR pile for a few years and never found time to read it. Big mistake on my part. I loved it. John is the strong, protective type, considerate towards women and anyone in need of help. Heather is strong, self-sufficient and sassy. Together sparks fly and although their relationship is unconventional, it works for them.

I'm not really a fan of books about espionage or government undercover work so I was leery of reading a book with Operatives in the title. John is the main man in the daily running of RED, but his job is secondary to the story and is a basis to his character and others covered in other books. The story was more about John and Heather's relationship and was very well written. Now that I know about this author, I can't wait to read more.

Very good second novel

I quite enjoyed this second novel. The only reason I have it 4 stars was due to the time jump from after book one to before book one. I have never enjoyed books completely that's do that. The epilogue was great though. I will be reading the third one when it comes out.
