As the darkness rises, magic is their only defense—if it doesn’t end the world.

The Dark War, Book 1

Witch. Hunter. Traitor. Kali Richards’s solitary life’s work is to hunt the evildoers of her own kind and bring them to justice. She’s poised to catch her latest bounty when she realizes her quarry is a witch-vampire hybrid with a taste for blood—Kali’s blood.

She’s lost quite a lot of it when Wyatt, the ex who still owns the pieces of her shattered heart, comes to her rescue. Eight years apart hasn’t cooled her anger over their breakup. Neither has it cooled the desire still steaming between them.

As Wyatt heals her wounds, he brings disturbing Kali’s mother has awakened from a years-long coma with a prophecy on her lips. A Dark War is coming that will pit supernatural against human. Kali is the key to stopping it.

Except Kali isn’t what you’d call adept at spellcasting. Like it or not, she needs a lot of help. From Wyatt, and from the organization that she turned her back on once before—the Witch Hunter’s Union. Even with an army at her back, she’s in for one hell of a ride…

May contain a stubborn little kick-ass witch, a wickedly sexy ex-boyfriend and a whole lot of hybrid trouble.

Angela Addams is an author of many naughty things. She believes that the written word is an amazing tool for crafting the most erotic of scenarios and likes telling stories about normal people getting down and dirty and falling in love. Enthralled by the paranormal at an early age, Angela also spends a lot of her time thinking up new story ideas that involve supernatural creatures in everyday situations.

She is an avid tattoo collector, a total book hoarder, and loves anything covered in chocolate…except for bugs.

She lives in Ontario, Canada in an old, creaky house, with her husband, children and four moody cats.

I’ve been wanting to try Angela Addams for a while. When I saw a new series on NetGalley, I thought this was a great time to give her a try.

Kali Richards is a witch and a witch hunter. She has turned her back on her people after a traumatic event that left her two sisters dead. She goes after witches who are doing evil things. Some of witch hunter brethren feel that pretty much any witch is a bad witch. They want to kill all of the ones that don’t work for the Hunter’s Union.

Kali is going after a witch who killed another witch for the dead witch’s family. It seems that Kali is a bit over her head. Kali is not a great spell caster. She uses her shear strength as her advantage. She is also a great tracker. She is able to follow a witch’s magic trail to find them. Ivana, the witch that Kali believes killed the witch, is more than she seems. She is also extremely powerful. Kali almost gets herself killed several times on this case.

Wyatt shows up just in the knick of time to save Kali from a group of vampires. He is Kali’s ex-boyfriend. They did not end things on a good note, but there’s still chemistry there too. Wyatt has some healing powers, so he is able to heal Kali after the vampires almost drain her. Wyatt also has several secrets that come out throughout the book. One of which is a real doozy.

There is also Billy, who is a human who works at the Witch Hunter’s Union. Billy is a nice guy and treats Kali really well. He is everything that Wyatt is not. He does have a crush on Kali and had for a while. This didn’t come out until partway through this book and Kali had no idea. It seemed like there might be a love triangle, but by the end of the book, maybe not. I won’t say no, but looks unlikely. I hope not.

There is also some other secondary characters that I enjoyed. Sam and Clive also work for the Witch Hunter’s Union. Sam is a witch too. Clive is her partner. They are a fun pair. Drake is a seer who makes an appearance. I think he will have a larger part to play later in the series. Kali’s mom and dad are also a larger part of the story. Both see predictions, but with different degrees of success. Kali’s mom is usually pretty accurate, her dad, is rarely accurate.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I liked the action of the war and investigating the murder of the witch girl, which wasn’t everything it seemed. I think this series with the war has a lot of potential. I was not a fan of the romance between Kali and Wyatt or the possibility of a love triangle thrown in with Billy. I thought Kali and Wyatt have some pretty large communication issues. Wyatt has a hard time showing any feelings at all and that has caused some issues with Kali, and rightly so. The book ends on a pretty big cliffhanger, so I think I will have to check out the next book to see where this story goes.

**Book was provided to me by the publisher via NetGalley. This review is my opinion and was not requested or provoked in anyway.

Holy crow! What did I just read?! The Dark War by Angela Addams was simply a-maz-ing!!! All my happy buttons got pushed with this book and honestly, I didn’t expect it to happen. I’m not normally into witches but the blurb was interesting enough that I thought I’d give it a twirl. Sooooo glad I did!

A quick rundown – Kali is a witch. She’s not a great spellcaster but her tracking abilities are off the hook. After the death of her sisters and a bad break-up, she leaves home, her family and everything she knows. It’s been eight years and now she has a new life as a hunter…of witches. That pretty much makes her a traitor to her kind. However, she does only hunt bad witches. Her current bounty is to find the killer of a young witch. As Kali soon discovers, the killer is not a normal witch but a hybrid witch-vampire and battling her may be more than she can handle. During a brutal attack, Kali is rescued by none other the man who broke her heart. There are still heat between them but she still angry and hurt by his betrayal. Before she can send Wyatt packing, she finds out her mom has awakened from her coma and has voiced a new prophecy. A Dark War is coming and it will be a battle between humans and the supernatural…and the only one who can stop them is Kali. Expect quite a lot of exciting stuff to happen in this non-stop edge of your seat story but before I give any of it away, I’m going to stop right here.

I really liked Kali. She’s spunky, sassy and a tad (maybe more than a tad) bit stubborn. Learning her back-story made me want to hug her except I’m afraid she’d kick my ass. Wyatt = strong, tough and yummy. Okay, that said someone please punch him! Together they are volatile and combustible. That means when things are hot between them - Oh Baby! When they fight on the same side - booty-kicking action! Nevertheless, keep in mind he broke her heart and she left home for a reason. Hit him, hit him NOW! As hot and cold as things are between them, I found myself unable to stop cheering them on to be together. And then Wyatt goes and opens his big mouth again…

There are quite a few great characters in this series (Sam and Clive) and some that are just plain scary (Ivana) that keep everything fast-paced and interesting. A few are worth a individual mention. Drake…hmmm… I’m not 100% convinced he’s a good guy. He has these moments of me him. Then something comes out of his mouth and I find myself telling Kali to run far away from the creepy guy! I have quite a few opinions of where I think things may go and they all revolve around him. Billy, oh please don’t let this be the last time we see him (Pun intended!). He’s so badass and a lovable guy at the same time. The Curtises, I’m going to put a pin on that right there. Lastly is Rick who is a prepper. I took that to be coo-coo bananas conspiracy theory thinker. But now, I’m not so sure. Hmmm.

I’m trying really hard to not second guess where author Angela Addams is going to take this series. She’s left a bunch of clues like little breadcrumbs of possibilities and my brain is spinning a mile a minute trying to decide which way the story is going to go. At this point, my struggle is going to have to sit on the back burner because I’ve stalked her page and see no sign of the next book. *Heavy sigh* Whenever it comes out I will be all over it. For now, I’m giving The Dark War two big thumbs up and my stamp of recommendation.

Edited to add: I was devastated when the author's publisher closed their doors and I lost all hope that there wouldn't be a second book. I am so over the moon to see Ms. Addams has found a new publisher and is currently working on the next book. So excited in fact that, while I really didn't need to re-read The Dark War again, I did it for the sheer pleasure. Second time around, two years later and I still am in the same amount of awe I was the first time around. Yup, this book is THAT GOOD!

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.

I was asked to read Fortune’s Fool but in the “Note to Reader” It tells you that it’s a Standalone but you should read The Dark War first. Since I am such a stickler for reading books in order, I started with The Dark War. I have one question. Why hasn’t everyone who loves Urban Fantasy read this book? It is utterly fantastic.

In The Dark War we meet Kali, a witch who is pissed off at the world and her kind. Due to the death of her sisters.  She moved away from her family and the rest of the people she knows. She becomes a witch hunter. Weird I know a witch who hunts her kind. However, Kali only hunts evil witches.

A prophecy is foretold, and her ex comes to find her and bring her home. OMG, I wanted to KILL Wyatt so many times. He yanks Kali’s emotions around so much, and he is just a bastard. If I could have reached into the pages and stabbed him then slapped her, I think I would have. Gah, why are women so stupid when it comes to men!

Loaded with action that doesn’t stop along with some pretty intense passion, which I LOVED. Best of both worlds for me. I love Urban Fantasy, make it a romance to I am in heaven. I am curious why the next book doesn’t pick up where this one leaves off, but I can’t wait to dive in none the less.

I am rating The Dark War 5 HUGE Boundless stars, one of my favorites of the year so far.

Angela Addams is truly a talented author, and this is certainly confirmed with The Dark War (hopefully the first of a new series). After having read Ms Addams Order of the Wolf series, it wasn’t a hard sell to interest me in this exciting new tale. Fabulous world building, intriguing characters and an easy to follow plot, all combined to produce a well-written book. While this definitely stands on its own, the ending does leave an opening for more to come. Please tell me there will be another book Ms Addams? If you haven’t read anything yet by this author, I highly recommend that you do!

There's a war coming, a Dark War. Kali has been away from her family for some time. Too much hurt happened to her and she left. She is a Witch Bounty Hunter, even if she is a witch herself. She's looking for a very powerful witch who has killed a young witch. The girl's parents hired her to find her. When the is almost killed by Vampires, she gets rescued by an old boyfriend named Wyatt, another witch. Wyatt is sent to bring Kali home as her parents have predicted that Kali is the key to ending the war when it starts and they need her. Fighting vampire witch hybrids almost gets her killed. Wyatt can heal her and has been hunting vampires for the Witches Counsel. There are witches, vampires and werewolves that is known about during this book. I expect more supernaturals before the ending of the series. Wyatt has secrets that will affect the relationship with Kali. He has many secrets that he has not revealed at this time. I really enjoyed the book. I would have liked a little more excitement and action and not so much sex. No, I'm not against sex in books. As a matter of fact, I love it. I just didn't think it needed to be quite so explicit. Will read the rest of the series. There is a cliffhanger. I received this book from Net Galley and Entangled Publishing for a honest review. The opinions expressed are my own.

This was a fun read! Kali definitely has her flaws but that's what made her so relatable and easy to like as a lead character. The plot was easy to follow and well-paced; I never felt bored. The world building in this is fantastic! I love it when the genre is paranormal and fantasy because you literally can do anything with it! This was a great start for a first book of a series.
