Ryder Axton, the lethal, dirty-minded, Navy SEAL-trained, and hot-blooded bounty hunter plays by his own rules, but he's going to have to break them to save her.
Ryder never lets himself get personally involved. But when he finds a missing federal witness being held captive, it becomes personal, fast! Keeping Rachel Farrington safe, even if it—or more likely she—kills him, is now his only mission. One big problem, she doesn’t know who he is and fights him at every turn.
He thought he had nothing to lose. He was wrong.
Rachel Farrington thought she was safe as a federal witness in protective custody until she woke up chained in the monster’s basement. When a powerful, dangerous man claiming to be a Navy Seal-trained, bounty hunter shows up, she’s not sure if he’s rescuing her or dragging her towards her death.
He is not an ordinary man. He’s dark and deadly; his past is mysterious and his motives unreadable. He seems to be made of the stuff of myth and legend; and of ink and steel.
When death comes, can they defy it?
Defy contains mature and explicit content and is recommended for mature readers only.

This book was different than the other books in this series, but it was still very good! An amazing addition to the series! I loved it! The book is filled with action and mystery, and that fits Ryder perfectly! It can be read as a standalone.
College student Rachel was at the wrong place at the wrong time. She is an eye witness of the murder on another college student. Now, the murderer has kidnapped her and holds her in his basement for several days, but he doesn’t kill her for some weird reason. Ryder is a bounty hunter and is after a drug cartel boss named Miguel, the same guy that has kidnapped Rachel. Ryder finds Rachel in the basement and saves her. Rachel doesn’t trust Ryder at the beginning and fights him to escape. Ryder knows to convince her that he is saving her and that she is going home. The bad guys are looking for Rachel and the only one who can keep her safe is Ryder.
I loved Ryder and Rachel! Ryder is the best bounty hunter there is. He loves his job and loves to defy death. He is immediately attracted to Rachel and wants to risk his own life to safe her. He also wants, for the first time ever, to tell someone everything about his past, and this person is Rachel. A piece of his past is revealed in the prologue. That prologue had me hooked and I couldn’t wait to read more about Ryder. His past is very sad. Rachel is a strong woman. She is also smart and has a big, beautiful dream. She is very close to her family and I love Lemy. There was a lot of mystery about why Rachel was kidnapped and not just murdered. I hadn’t guessed the reason why. Both Rachel and Ryder defy death on several occasions and sometimes together, so I find the title to be perfect for the characters. Ryder is Rachel’s hero and she is alive because of him. Rachel makes sure that Ryder opens up and finally feels alive for the first time in his life!
The other Brothers of Ink and Steel only appear once. I would have loved to read more about them, but it understand it. Ryder is different than the other brothers and he’s always away for his job. I really hope that Talon is the next brother to get his story! I know I wanted to know more about him since Burn (book #2) and I still do.
The only negative thing about this book is that the book ended too soon! I wanted more after all that action at the end. At that point, they only saw each other for a couple days. I wished for a little more growth in their relationship and to read more about them as a couple. I did love the epilogue, it was beautiful!
This next Brother of Ink and Steel was an action packed adventure, with a girl who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and a bounty hunter who was just trying to get his mark.
"Gorgeous, cocky, tough, strong - yeah, he's the real deal and the entire package."
Ryder's life has been full of death and destruction. On the run from a young age, his adult life isn't much different. He is a bounty hunter, a good one, and he has his sights on Eduardo Miguel. The cartel thug who just escaped federal custody. What he doesn't really anticipate when he goes in to get him is the captive he finds who might be more trouble than she is worth.
"Her entire presence radiates with a shining vibrant life-force."
Rachel was just a college student, she was just walking around late at night, she was just in the wrong place and witnessed something shouldn't have. She thought she was safe, until she wasn't. Being held captive by Miquel does a number on her psyche but she never loses hope. She does however loses her trust in anyone, so when she gets unexpected rescued, she does not go quietly.
The connection between these two grows but around every corner they continue to run into more trouble. Their story seems to come secondary to the danger and suspense in grand scheme of things. This was an adrenaline rush from beginning to end with a lot of things happening. Ryder has a great attitude and even while fighting bad guys manages to put a smile on your face. He has never let anyone into his inner workings but with Rachel something is different.
"I'm going to devour you."
Rachel is a strong character as well, she does not go down without a fight. She comes out kicking and screaming and does not except help easily. She is feisty with a whole sweet side that makes her really endearing.
I did miss seeing the other boys, while they make an appearance it is a short one and the connection to the other books is fairly loose. That being said, I still liked this book but it had a different feel than the others in the series so far. It kind of comes in the on the periphery of the story of the brotherhood that has been developed. I look forward to what is next from the author and this one is sure to keep you glued to the action.
Let me start out by saying......THIS COVER IS HOT HOT HOT! Defy started out with a bang, and I never caught my breath until hours after I finished! I LOVED LOVED LOVED IT!
Rachel Farrington is a good girl who follows the rules. When her best friends talk her into going out, she witnesses something that she shouldn't have, and it throws her life into total chaos and danger. She wakes up in a basement, still alive because of her sex trade value. Bounty hunter Ryder Axton is hired to hunt down a cartel leader for a lot of money, because he's the best there is. When he gets to the leaders house, he learns that it's going to be a rescue mission instead, so he saves Rachel. This sends them on a highly dangerous journey, and as they spend 24/7 together, feelings start to grow. Will Ryder be able to save Rachel before the cartel gets her?
WOW WOW WOW! I don't have the words to express how action packed this story truly is. The character development is great, with secondaries that are awesome as well. A super fast paced, intense, and well written story line flows perfectly. The author does a fantastic job of blending in highly dangerous situations with powerful romance. She kept my heart racing cover to cover, and I swear I needed a shot of fireball after I finished the story that I experienced, rather than just read. The sparks are flammable between Ryder and his "Farrington," finally leading to a EXPLOSIVE sexy scene. The ending has a little twist that had me cussing before I figured out what was going on, but I may or may not still be calling the author bad names. I LOVE this author's style of writing, and I CANNOT WAIT to read more of her! HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Wow-Defy really blew me away! I was not expecting such a great book. I haven't read the previous books in the series, so this was my first Allie Juliette Mousseau book. I went straight to Amazon and grabbed everything else she has written. I love the non stop action and suspense in this story. The relationship has that awesome slow burn factor as well. Ryder is an amazing character. He is a total alpha male without being an alpha-hole. Rachel is great as well. Its rare that I like girls in stories like this-they either come off as annoying and whiny or too tough to be believed. Rachel does a good job of not being either and that is tough! If you like a great, fast paced, romantic suspense, this book is perfect! Seriously, stop what you are doing and read it. NOW! Oh, but I have to say, the epilogue about made me chuck my kindle. Seriously. When you read the book you will understand my distress! POV: Dual Tears: No Trope: Kidnapping, Mortal Peril Triggers: Kidnapping Cliffhanger: No
4 Stars: Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance was well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!
The third of the Brothers of Ink and Steel series, and this was very different from the first two. Ryder is a bounty hunter/Navy SEAL and ends up saving Rachel from where she is being held. From there the journey is the two trying to stay alive and not really knowing who to trust, end up forging a bond that ends up with them catching some feelings.
This is a fast paced, pretty much non-stop action story, that is more action that romance (not a bad thing). I will say this really didn't fit in with the first two stories, but that's just IMO. I really enjoyed this story with the drama, danger, and the bit of chemistry we get, I give this 5 stars.
I'm so privileged and honoured to have had the chance to read an ARC from an USA Today Bestselling Author and also one of my favourite authors. I had been anticipating the reading of this book since she started promoting it and to top it off, I got an advanced copy. I've received the awesome book Defy from Allie Juliette Mousseau in exchange for an honest and spoiler free review. This action packed romance book deserves no less than 5 amazing stars.
This book has every thing to make it a great hit. Action packed, fast paced, adrenaline ride all the way. It started with an heartbreaking prologue that got me hooked right away. The readers have no other choice but feel and love Ryder. It's funny and romantic at the same time. It's like watching a movie but in your head.
Ryder is a well known bounty hunter that stops at nothing to be the victor. He's a cocky, confident, funny and sexy all american hero. Who can even ride an alligator. He is hired to find a well known criminal who has escaped the authorities. He vows to catch him. But what he doesn't expect to find is the key witness to the crime, Rachel, tied to a wall in the room of the criminals house. Now Ryders plans have changed, he needs to save her. He will go through a series of hurdles but he will not fail to try to save and protect her family and her. Underneath his tough act, he's scared to fail and has moments where his past comes back to haunt him. He was a witness to a crime when he was young and was not left un scattered. He still has moments of weakness.
Rachel was at the wrong place at the wrong time so she got to witness something awful. Miguel, the criminal will not stop until the problem has been solved. Rachel will awakened in a room and realized she's been kidnapped. She's smart, feisty and easily able to handle the situation. She's good at keeping her fears at bay. Rachel is a fighter and won't back down in the face of the enemy. When she is rescued by none other than Ryder, she thinks he's a criminal too. She will give him a run for his money. They are so hilariously funny together. They have explosive chemistry even after knowing each other for only a matter of hours.
" One day that feels like a lifetime"
Allie has put her creative mind and plotting onto paper to keep us entertained for hours. Defy has a well thought out and executed plot with fascinating characters. The author will take you on a full adrenaline roller coaster ride. She has such a wonderful way of writing that her story just captured my undivided attention and have the perfect amount of steamy romance. She has the ability to give wonderful descriptions and great depth to her characters. The action started fairly early in the book and didn't let up until the very end. After reading a couple pages out of the epilogue, I thought that I wasn't getting my HEA but she surprised me with a wonderful original finish.
This story is told in a dual POV without a cliffhanger and with an HEA. This is book 3 in the Brothers of Ink and Steel series. This is a standalone, there is no need to have read the previous books in order to enjoy this one. Although, I personally prefer to read series in order for better enjoyment but the previous characters do not play a role in this story. There is only one scene with the other brothers, some that were introduced in the 2 previous ones. I've read all her book and they are all worth your precious time and money. This is one book that when you start reading you will find it difficult to put it down.
Adrenaline pumping action packed page turner of a book with a bad ass bounty hunting tattooed alpha that will literally have you hanging on the edge of your seat, but will ultimately have you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
Ryder Axton, Navy SEAL trained bounty hunter’s current mission sees him trying to apprehend Eduardo Miguel, never allowing himself to get personally involved in his assignments gets more than he bargained for when his mission comes to a grinding halt when he finds a missing federal witness being held captive in his basement, things turn personal very fast. Keeping Rachel Farrington safe and gaining her trust becomes his only mission even if it means risking both their lives.
Rachel Farrington, college student and federal witness after she saw a fellow student brutally murdered by a Cartel Boss. Thinking she was safe in the protective custody of the FBI, finds herself chained up and held captive in Eduardo Miguel’s basement. Fearing for her life with no chance of being rescued is surprised beyond belief when a powerful and lethal soldier turns up claiming to be a bounty hunter she’s unsure if he’s rescuing her or dragging her to a greater hell. After a series of death defying experiences she finds herself with no other choice to put her trust in him.
This book had everything I love about a good story. The author’s style of writing instantly sucked me in and didn’t let me go until the very last word, and then I let out the massive breath I had been holding since the beginning. For me personally I felt it had the right mix of everything, action, humour, sizzling sexual chemistry, flowing plotline, main characters and secondary characters that had depth and were well developed. I especially loved the banter between Ryder and Rachel the one liners and the alligator scene had me in stiches and that ending oh I loved that ending!!
And just in case you didn’t know how much I loved this book by the amount of times I have used the word love I literally cannot recommend it enough to readers who enjoy an action packed, fast paced read with a sizzling love story thrown into the mix.
This is the third instalment of the Brothers of Ink and Steel Series each book can be read as a standalone and although other characters from the previous books are in this story it didn’t hinder my reading experience and I will certainly be reading the other books in this series.
** ARC provided in exchange for an honest review courtesy of Words Turn Me On Book Blog **
Ryder is a terrific blend of sarcastic and sweet, he’s dark and light and has experienced some of the most horrific things in his lifetime and in turn those events have shaped him into this tattooed, Rambo that has a desperate need to save the girl and kill the bad guy. Rachel is the damsel in question that after having witnessed something terrible and tragic is sent under witness protection but after it all goes seriously wrong, she and Ryder must work together to stay alive long enough to work through the myriad of murky emotions that each brings out in the other.
‘“Your life will go back to normal sooner than you think. You’ll be back in classes and on that career track of yours, you’ll have a boyfriend, and all of this will only be a fading memory.” “Do you really believe I could forget you so quickly?” I whisper, overcome. Ryder brings his lips to my ear and in a hushed tone that is simple as a breath he says, “Then don’t.”’
Allie’s writing in Defy is electrifying, she paints the action scenes so vividly with terrific attention to detail so you feel like you’re watching a full-fledged action hero movie in your head. Each new book that she releases just seems to get better, the writing more mature, the characters more intriguing and diverse and the story as a whole more enthralling and addictive. In Defy there is a fantastic quality and range of emotion to be explored, there are some really funny moments as well tender and super sexy to counterbalance the drama and violence. The Brothers of Ink and Steel is one of the best series’ out there to buy right now and each book goes from strength to strength as does Allie’s writing and imagination. I cannot wait to see what she has in store for us next.
Wow. What an incredibly intense ride. This book was brilliantly written, edgy, and definitely one of the best in the series. Much different than the others, this book takes you on a ride full of suspense, steam, and quite a few twists and turns. While this is a standalone, you'll want to read the prior books in the Brothers of Ink and Steel series. Each book adds the perfect element to this series.
This is Ryder and Rachel's story. From the very beginning, the author plays with emotions and then throws in tons of action. Oh yes, their story starts off with a bang and she keeps it coming until the end. Ryder and Rachel have quite a path ahead of them. It is going to get dirty and ugly. But the passion between them cannot be denied. Can these two get past the obstacles that lie ahead?
These two were amazing. From the start, they sucked me in to their story and made me want more. I found myself on the edge of my seat at times, flipping pages as fast as I could. Rachel was someone that I connected with and found myself rooting for. I also love Ryder and definitely swooned. I am full of anticipation for the next book in this series because I cannot get enough of these guys.
DEFY took my breath away more than a few times! It's Romance/Thriller! WARNING: Can cause triggers (kidnapping)
If you’re looking for a sweet “boy meets girl, falls in love” story, then keep looking. This SERIES is only for those that can handle heart stopping action with their romance. It’s been a while since I read DARE. It’s one of those stories that you don’t forget. I enjoyed the chemistry along with waiting for the other shoe to drop. I just finished back to back reading of BURN, DARE YOU FOREVER (a novella) and DEFY. I didn’t think they could get any more intense, but WOW! Author Allie Juliette Mousseau has a wonderful way of writing description that you feel a part of, as if you’re there. (Racing thru the French Quarters in New Orleans took my breath away!) This series has great romance with plenty of action, quick wit, and connections. Each book can be read as a standalone, but don’t cheat yourself, read them all! Now I’ve got to read the True North Series!
Action Action Action. Shootouts, abductions, fist fights, car chases, under cover missions, dirty cops, university, elaborate plot, bounty hunter.
Love story between ex military bounty hunter with tragic past and a university student abducted for what she saw. Lots of reflection about death, on both characters side. Interesting “hostage” steps of depression. Entertaining through and through.
One sex scene. Most of the book is them falling in love and escaping with their lives.
This is the third book in this impressive series, and this is Ryder and Rachel’s story. Ryder is a Navy seal / bounty hunter, who rescues Rachel, who thought she would be safe in witness protection, but instead she wakes up chained by a monster. This is a well written fast paced, action packed story, which has emotions, trust, danger, suspense, intrigue, drama, romance, undeniable chemistry, and love, which leads to an addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This is AMAZING!! I loved the other books in both the North series and this story (Ink &Steel) but HOLY COW GIRL!! This book should be made into a movie!!! It is so action packed and cleverly written you are drawn in immediately to the storyline. Then it has a great plot with some surprises that you are like 👍. AMAZING!!! INTENSE!!! WOW!! The love story is great and yes there is steamy scenes so relax people of that is what you want but this is so look much more too!
Amazing as expected! The constant thrill, the love found despite the craziest circumstances. This book makes me crave for more. More inspiring story that will take me to another world full of hope, inspiration and love that will make you not want to leave from this story world. Coz in this world we get unconditional love and hope despite the ugliness.
Every time I read one of Aurora's books, she steals my breath away with the characters and their stories. I can't express how wonderful these books are. Ryder's story is so different from Liam's and Josh's and it pulled me in from the very beginning. Wonderfully done again.
I liked the way it was written, just like the first book in the series, the story moves between past and present, with this the flashbacks are more frequent, but since the most important piece of the story was already discussed in the previous book of the series, the effect it's a little bit lost. There were two key elements that we were dying to read about in the flashbacks, the one that was already discussed in Dare, and another that turned out to be not so revealing after all, we keep reading that Liam didn't do or say anything important, that he did something to send her away, that he is to blame after all, but when I finally read about it, it didn't seem so shocking after all.
I get that what happened to Quinn was bad, and her need to get away, but what I don't understand is why she had to cut ties with everyone or why they didn't try to stay in contact,
No cliffhanger Standalone though part of a larger series Told from both POVs Minor editing errors
I have loved every book in this series but this book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I couldn't put it down. While the other books focus more on a love story, this one is action packed.
I don't want to give too much of the storyline away but Ryder is a navy seal who is on a mission. Rachel is an unexpected distraction. Their chemistry isn't immediate per se but man does it heat up fast. Unlike the other books this one has less sexy time in it but I found I didn't mind that since it was such a page turner.
The only down side is I wanted more Ryder. I was hoping after all was said and done we would get a little bit more of the where are they now but you really only get a quick taste.
This is my first time reading any of Allie Juliette Mousseau's work, as well as the first book of this series I've read and I have to say. I enjoyed it! It's definitely a stand alone read as stated. I never felt lost or any of those other negative feelings one gets when they enter another number in a series other than the first book. I plan to read more of her work in the near future.
Defy is the third book in the Brothers of Ink and Steel; they all can be read as standalone novels. I absolutely love this series! I have fallen in love with all of the characters and Ms Mousseau’s writing gets better with every novel. Defy is full of all of the aspects that I look for in a novel. The angst had me on the edge of my seat. There was lots of action and mystery that kept me turning pages to get to the end. Of course there was also the aspect of friendship and love.
Rachel, a college student, was in the wrong place at the wrong time and therefore witnessed a horrible crime. She was the only eye witness to this crime and is put in danger when the murderer escapes and kidnaps her. Ryder is a bounty hunter chasing after a Miguel. Ryder and Rachel’s paths cross due to the common factor of Miguel. Ryder finds Rachel and rescues her; however Rachel doesn’t trust Ryder and tries to fight him and escape. Ryder is determined to get Rachel home safe.
Ryder is amazing; he is smart, sexy and one heck of a bounty hunter. He loves that in his job he gets to defy death chasing the criminals. He feels an attraction to Rachel from the moment that they first met and he feels comfortable enough with her to want to share the secrets of his past with her. This is something he has never done before. His past and what he went through at a young age was heartbreaking and I think it is one of the reasons he is so passionate about getting Rachel home safely. Rachel is a great female lead; she is so strong and smart not to mention she is also beautiful both on the inside and out. I couldn’t get enough of these two characters; their story was mesmerizing. Of course the other brothers of ink and steel make a brief appearance in Defy. I love the bond that all of these “brothers” share.
Defy is a great story full of angst, mystery, and action with a hint of a love story. I would have loved to have learned more about Ryder and Rachel’s relationship and hope that it will be explored deeper in upcoming installments of this series. If you love tattooed, hot men you will love the Brothers of Ink and Steel series. I cannot wait for the next book to release.
***ARC provided in exchange for an honest review - Jacquie / Scandalous Book Blog*** This is the third offering in the Brothers of Ink and Steel series and it’s time to find out more about the mysterious dark and brooding Ryder. Although this is actually part of a series is can be read as a standalone as well but if you do you will miss out on so much. When college student Rachel witness a murder she is automatically placed under witness protection, a scheme Ryder knows all too well from being a child. Soon Rachel’s life is in grave danger and the only one who can save her is bounty hunter Ryder, but will he be enough when no one else can be trusted and can he save himself in the process. Firstly this book is unlike the others in that the story content is much darker than we are used to but having said that the book is still just as wonderful as the others in the series. Ryder is everything I wanted in the main character and more, tall, handsome, brooding and completely alpha at all times. The dynamic between him and the other brothers as always provided much light relief against the back drop of murder and mayhem. I loved this book and watching the love affair between Rachel and Ryder unfold was simply wonderful. If I have one complaint I would have liked another chapter between the end and the epilogue I felt as though something was missing or maybe I just wanted more Ryder ! Really looking forward to the next book in the series Allie never lets us down.
