Gilded Age Newport… Millionaires and robber barons come to spend the season in their opulent mansions while their wives throw lavish balls and gossip over afternoon tea. In 1893, the toast of the town is a spirit-medium—just returned from Europe—who now summons the departed to the marble mansions and wealthy parlors of the summer colonists. Her success attracts the attention of a retired stage magician who has made his name exposing psychic charlatans. He decides to travel to Newport to effect one last dramatic unmasking.

Gilded Age Newport takes center stage in this novel. It is 1893, and the cottages of the wealthy seem obsessed with a medium who who specializes with speaking to the spirits. Everyone wants to participate with one of her seances, but not everyone believes that she is not a charlatan. In fact, a retired stage magician is pretty sure that she is and is doing everything he can to prove it before too much damage is done.

This really was a fun and interesting read. I wouldn't sell it as a mystery, per-se, since the reader is pretty sure about the medium's true status. With that said it is interesting to read the take the various people around her had.
