I actually guffawed while reading this book. Couldn't stop laughing for a few minutes during the actual turkey preparation. Carson, you beautiful mess.

This was cute and left me with a smile on face. That makes it a winner in my books.

This story is part of the Sleigh Ride Calendar.

This was such a sweet and funny Christmas story.

Carson is forced to spend this upcoming Christmas in a new city. To appease his mother's worries, he says that he's expecting company and cooking turkey. It's all lies, because Carson is all alone and totally clueless about how to cook the bird. But before panic sets in...

Tom Stockton , the turkey hotline responder turns out to be exactly what Carson needs, and not only thanks to his valuable cullinary advice. Carson keeps finding excuses to call him and these conversations become his only joy during the holidays. What he doesn't know is that the feelings are mutual.

And when his fight with Terry, the turkey, proves uneven, because...

Tom is the one who comes to the rescue, and this time not just over the phone.

The conversations between Carson and Tom were hilarious and left me smiling. But I must admit that I felt the turkey talk was almost too much. All they talked about was that damn bird, and I would have liked to see them getting to know each other better. So, when they meet for the first time it is only towards the ending.

That being said, this was a very pleasant holiday read. Not steamy at all, but fluffy and funny, with a nice HFN. Recommended!

I’m sorry-not sorry but I have to do it, I have to use the word: cute. Cute! The way this story begins is cute. And sweet. And honest… kinda. ;) Also, “Hungry Man dinner” mention FTW!

Carson is also sweet, has just recently moved to Chi-town from Cali, is having a rough time finding his place, loves and has a good relationship with his family back west and is missing them at Christmastime. He’s our narrator for this story and he’s pretty dern good at it.

Tom seems nice, too, if a little brusque in his humor and some reactions to Carson during some of their conversations. This trait might fit his personality but we’re not given much to go on regarding that, or his history, or even his current situation. It caused me to do the head tilt a few times, his comments feeling a bit off. I don’t think that was the author’s intent, as it feels out of sync with everything else about the story, but there ya have it. Either way, he likes Carson and Carson digs him right back, but we would have benefitted from a bit more about him to close the circuit between the two of them.

My declaration about the “cute” maintained its hold throughout, adding to the almost chaste nature of this holiday bite-sized snack. Don’t get me wrong, there’s some chemistry twixt Carson and Tom and they show each other some electrified affection, but the focus of this story is Carson’s attempts to adjust to Chicago life and the surprise that is Tom.

Baker’s writing is smooth, if not especially unique in flavor or tone, and I sailed through reading this story with ease. In other words: this is the perfect Xmas pre-dinner mint. ;)

This is one I would love to see made into a Christmas special for TV just for me to watch every year and get that feeling of schmoopiness every time. It screams warm fuzzies and I wanted to hug the conversations Tom and Carson had over the phone. Is it believable? Not so much, but I don't want believable in my Schmoopy Annual Christmas Marathon specials, I want this. Adorable fuzziness with a side of snark.

REVIEW @Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words

Talk Turkey by Bru Baker was probably one of the funniest I read among the DSP Advent Calendar stories I read this year. And surely the most developed in the MCs’ relationship. If you’re looking for an original plot, give this Holiday short a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

Carson has just moved to Chicago and in his first Christmas alone, away from his family, he promises his mum he is still going to celebrate with someone and cooking. The only little problem? He knows nothing about gravy, pot and what size of turkey to buy. Luckly he can count on Tom to save him from a frozen turkey called Terry.

It was a great pleasure to read this story, it was engaging and hilarious, I laughed so much. A lovely surprise by an author I’m soon going to read more about.

Cover art by Catt Ford is perfection.

A hotline for getting advice on how to deal with making a turkey? Sign me up! Since I am about as illiterate in the kitchen as Carson, if not more so, I was able to sympathize with him all the way when he was stressing over preparing a turkey for Christmas. His solution of calling the Talk Turkey hotline has never been available to me, so I was eager to find out what would happen once he gathered his courage and called for help.

Carson has recently moved too far away from his family for a quick visit, and his new job doesn’t allow him the luxury of taking a few days off over Christmas so he can make the trip to enjoy his mother’s cooking. I laughed when at least half of the first call ended up being social rather than focused on the secrets of turkey preparation. But Carson is so lonely, that he soon calls again. He hits it off with Tom, even though it’s pathetic and he knows it can’t ever turn into anything real. Then the turkey takes Cason hostage (you have to read this to believe it – it’s hysterical), and Carson’s next call to Tom is a lot more panicked and leads to a totally unexpected result – including some very “unsanitary practices”.

If you like Christmas stories with a touch of humor, if a hotline-romance sounds interesting, and if you’re looking for a fun read that is as entertaining as it is hot, then you will probably like this novella. I think it’s a total hoot and very cute.

Talk Turkey by Bru Baker

A delightful holiday novella. Calling the turkey hotline has never been more successful.
A M-M clean romance for the holiday season.
Sweet and emotional.

Carson is new to Chicago. He hasn’t made any friends yet at work but he promised his mother he’d make a turkey for his Christmas dinner. Lost in the supermarket because of the overwhelming choices of turkeys, Carson calls the turkey hotline for advice.
Cute jokes ensue when Tom answers and helps answer the turkey questions.

I mean, come on, this was entirely outlandish. As all of these holiday stories are. But it was a unique story and the guys were both extremely likeable. I have not a nit to pick.

Carson picked the worst time to take a new job and move to Chicago. Now it’s right before Christmas and he’s left alone, promising his mother he’ll make a turkey himself. Unfortunately, Carson has no idea how to cook a turkey so when he calls a turkey hotline, he talks to Tom who’s more than willing to help. Tom took a job on the Talk Turkey hotline to make a little extra money but when Carson calls in, he can’t help but feel a connection. As the two get closer, Carson has no idea the great guy he’s talking to is in Chicago as well until something happens that causes Tom to run to Carson’s rescue.

This story was so cute! I loved that Carson was so clueless when it came to cooking a turkey and had no idea what Tom was talking about when he was going over what Carson would need. I also loved that they had such hilarious conversations. Tom was a little bit of a mystery but I loved how patient and funny he was with Carson.

This was such a great story but I wanted it to be so much longer! I would have liked to see more of them after they get together, to see how they work out being face to face instead of just a voice over the phone.

In the end, this was a great little Christmas story. I loved how adorable the characters were and how much fun it was. I wish it had been longer but I hope this won’t be the last we see of these two! Definitely recommended for those looking for something quick, fun and cute!

This holiday story was seriously the most sweetest but at the same time funny story I have read in awhile!!!

So this is Carson's first holiday alone since he has just moved away from his family. Not wanting to worry his mother and family about him being alone for the holidays he decides to act like he is having a friend over for dinner so he must make a turkey on his own for the first time which he has no idea what he is doing. So he sees a sign for a how to cook a turkey hotline and from there this story gets hilarious..

You get the humor between the banter of Carson and the hotline operator, then there was Carson trying to figure out how to cooks this turkey. But you also get the sweet with a little sad mixed in. With Carson and this mysteries phone line operator which honestly was just so sweet! Then there was Carson feeling alone on the holidays which was sad that he would not have his family around him celebrating.

So without giving away any more spoilers which hopefully I did not lol. I will leave this review with I loved the way this author wrote these characters and this sweet holiday story!!

I would definitely recommend this book!

3.5 stars – the new Windy City transplant and the helpline guy who is definitely not a turkey

A sweet short story that reads quickly, it centers on a recent transplant from NorCal (Sacramento) to Chicago. Carson is a likable character (and just as inept in the kitchen as I was at his age), and readers who appreciate watching a totally clueless guy flail around in the kitchen might find him extra-endearing. The setting was cute, and the phone-flirting was nicely tempting while remaining relatively low-key. The first “in-person” meeting of the two was a little low-energy for my tastes, but their banter displayed a really nice, slightly-corny sense of humor connection that worked well for these two characters.

Being a transplant from Chicago to NorCal myself (the reverse of the characters), I loved the description of my hometown, from the L to city shopping to skiing down the streets after a massive snowstorm. (I once snow-shoed down the Chicago streets from my boyfriend’s apartment – located in the same area as the story’s protagonists – to a local supermarket after a particularly strong “storm-of-the-decade” blizzard shut the roads down.)

Carson has moved across the country to Chicago right after Thanksgiving for a new job. He hasn’t had a chance to make new friends. His mom was worried about him being alone and not getting Christmas dinner, so Carson assured her he had a friend coming over and was making a turkey. Then she instead on seeing photos, so Carson is forced into making a turkey. He has never cooked much and has no clue. So he calls the Turkey Hotline for help. When Carson’s problems get more serious, Tom comes to the rescue in more ways than one.
I fell in love with this story from the first line. Carson was so adorable trying to pull this off, and Tom was funny helping him. I laughed so hard I thought I would cry. Some of the stuff was so hysterical that I even read it out-loud out my hubby, and he laughed along with me.
If you’re looking for a good laugh, a fabulous holiday story and a fun romance you can’t pass this one up!

Really enjoyed this, especially the build up to them actually meeting in person. Although it would have been good if they'd touched on some personal stuff in the turkey calls to have something to base their attraction on.

However two things annoyed me right at the end.

I loved this book! Carson doesn't know a thing about turkeys. It's his first Christmas away from his family and he told his mom that he would have a real Christmas meal. So, as he's trying to decide which turkey to get, he sees an advertisement for Talk Turkey. He calls the number and he is immediately taken by the man who picks up, Tom. After talking on the phone for weeks, the reason the two finally meet is hilarious. It was a perfect one to read around Christmas!

Okay, 4 stars because the idea of a hotline for turkey alone was so amusing, I couldn't contain my smile throughout. Seriously, do you Americans have those?!? A hotline dedicated to help people with their turkey problem?!? .

It was cute and it made me happy reading it.

I actually found this one really cute! I liked the idea of falling for the person on the other end of the turkey help line. My only complaint is fade to black sex scenes, I missed the sexytimes.

Talk Turkey is one of the stories included in Dreamspinner’s ‘2015 Advent Calendar- Sleigh Ride’ Holiday publications. This short story stars Carson, who works at the Chicago Stock Exchange, and Tom, who works on the turkey advice hotline for the holidays. This is told in third person from Carson’s pov.

Who knew a call to one of those turkey hotlines that are hyped around Thanksgiving could lead to romance? Carson has just moved to Chicago, not even unpacked properly yet and he promises his mother to cook a Christmas dinner since he can't be home with the family. When Tom answered the turkey hotline that day, he had no idea the voice on the other end would be life-changing.

Bru Baker's Talk Turkey was originally published as part of Dreamspinner's annual Advent Calendar in 2015 but somehow escaped my reading until now. Personally, as someone who has cooked more Thanksgiving turkeys than I care to remember, I could never understand how so many people have no clue how to do so but then I remember my first one was under the watchful eye of my grandmother and my mom was only a phone call away. Miss Baker takes an average holiday tradition that many partake in and gives it a creative spin that leaves you laughing, smiling, and rooting for Carson. I was rooting for Tom as well and for the pair to unite but Talk Turkey is basically Carson's journey of first time holiday cooking and you can't help but want to wrap him in bubblewrap and say "let me do it for you".

Talk Turkey is a wonderful holiday novella that makes a great appetizer for the season. Whether you read it now or in the middle of a summer heatwave will make no difference because it has everything, well its pretty light on drama but its definitely high on fun, flirty romance, comedy, and plenty of heart.

Thank you for the happy feels, Bru Baker! This adorable holiday short was just what I needed to pick up my day. Carson is a sweetheart, lonely, far from his family and struggling to meet his family's expectations that he'll have a traditional turkey dinner on Christmas Day. So he calls the Turkey Hotline and speaks to Tom, not once but nearly every day for the two weeks heading up to the holiday. They banter, they flirt, and they set the stage for a solid friendship.

Then they meet and both their Christmas wishes come true. Great story!

So who says you can't read a Xmas book in May?! Super cute holiday book about couple of guys who meet through the Turkey Hotline! Nice pacing, good writing and uber sweet. Absolute no heat but that's fine. Tom and Carson are lovely MCs and mesh well together.

Review can be read at It's About The Book

This was a sweet and sexy story about two guys falling for each other over a turkey help hotline. A new one for me! Tom and Carson tip toe around admitting it however by way of flirting over zingers back and forth about Tom saving Carson from his disastrous lack of cooking know how. It was a pretty fun read which was surprising given how little time the guys spent together on page. I think I enjoyed the banter and the building of the tension between the characters. I knew the guys had to get together at some point so I settled in and enjoyed the journey. The story is told from Carson’s POV only so you don’t really know for sure if Tom is interested or not. He hints at it. Tom also thinks it would have to be a long distance thing so it probably wouldn’t work out. Or solve his immediate problem of being alone on Christmas. Carson keeps reaching out to Tom for advice on food when all he really wants to do is talk to him again. It’s all pretty sweet in that new exciting crush kind of way. Then a blizzard helps them finally get together in person. And it was so worth the wait. Their chemistry was practically crackling like a cozy fire. This story was a great Christmas read. I loved the characters. Their banter was so sexy and funny. I was laughing out loud and smiling throughout the book. This one was a totally warm and fuzzy read with lots of humor and a great build up for romance. I highly recommend this one. So much packed into one little short. One of my favorites this season.
