A MESSAGE FROM THE AUTHOR:
I've always loved science fiction, fantasy, and horror, but it wasn't until I combined them with pulp thrillers and noir that I found my voice as an author. I want to leave my readers breathless, want them to feel the desperate longing, the hope and fear my heroes experience as they struggle not just to survive, but to become something more.

I found this book a tad disappointing. I acquired it over Kindle Unlimited, so I didn't pay close attention to its length. But, the book is about 50 pages long, with easily the last quarter taken up by promotional material for other books. The quintessence of the book is that readers are no longer satisfied with one-dimensional characters. For example, if you are conceiving a villain, then the reader wants to know about his motivations, the burning eye atop the tower doesn't cut it anymore. Thank you, captain obvious.
The rest of the book is spent, listing the kind of characters there are (side, sub and such) and then providing a few lines of description and maybe a list, for instance in the chapter about superhero characters the author lists every single superpower he could think of.
In short, this isn't so much a How to, but a summary of some basic facts. I've read Wikipedia entries that offered more insight.

Final note: besides the chapters on character, there is one that deals with the structure of a novel. If you look at today's action movies/tv shows, many of them tend to be written like the final battle of an 80/90s action movie. Think Jean-Claude Van Damme, who battles the big bad. For an interminable 15 minutes, he gets constantly hit in the face until finally, he summons his last bit of strength, hits the guy once and wins the battle. Chase might suggest otherwise, but that never was nor ever will be good writing. If the hero gets constantly beaten down with no chance of winning until the last five seconds, that is (1) annoying to watch while it lasts and (2) completely unrealistic when he wins. Even if he doesn't beat the odds until the very end, there have to be some small successes in between, such as narrowly escaping from Tattooine and saving the princess from the Death Star (sorry about the Star Wars references).

There is a lot of thought provoking information in this book. For example the Catalyst hero provokes change in others, where the Reluctant hero sees change in himself. Humanising the anti-hero with some redeeming features, then making the villain even worse. Characters who cause conflicting emotions within the reader are often deeper and more interesting. Supporting characters can add both strength and conflict to a story and a love interest can bring about change in your main character.

Where most books on character talk about appearance, family, lifestyle and work it is nice to see a book which looks at some character types. Even if this book is used as a starting point it offers a different perspective and useful examples.

Not Kindle Unlimited, received it via one of those here are some free books hope you take the time to review it. Actually aware of this writer, read Worms Ate Your Face {poetry collection} and quite a few of his other works, and he never has been 'right' but he's been entertaining and sometimes amusing and sometimes gross, but at least never boring. At one time had quite a few on ku but don't think any or many now.Just check out his writer page on amazon already. Some of the others got through freebies too or else ku. Dates may be wrong on some of the reviews, missed some.

This book gives you a lot of pointers on how to make your characters more realistic. Starting with the hero right down to the minor characters, the advice he gives is spot-on. Not only will your characters be more realistic, but you will have the expertise to flesh them out quickly without wasting time. This is a must-have that will pay for itself many times over.
