The awesome Avro Vulcan is an enduring image of the Cold War era when the world stood on the brink of nuclear annihilation. For many years the RAF's delta-wing jet bomber was the cornerstone of Britain's nuclear deterrent. Read about the Vulcan's operational history and take a close-up look at its construction. Discover what it takes to own and fly the mighty V-bomber, and find out how engineers keep it airworthy. Centrepiece of the manual is Vulcan XH558 - the world's only flying example of an Avro Vulcan.
An unmissable and invaluable history of the Vulcan, with nods to the Victor and Valiant also.
Well written and researched with great photographs and diagrams, this is a great testimony to a wonderful aircraft. Sadly, I never saw her fly, but passed under her wing many times whilst doing my glider training down St Athan many years ago.
Another novelty title from the Haynes Guide series. This briefly covers the development and operational history of the Vulcan bomber, before looking at various the technical aspects of the aircraft from various viewpoints with the use of the preserved example XH558. The illustrations are excellent – there are historic photos of Vulcans in development and in service as well as detail shots of XH558 undergoing various types of maintenance. The final part of the books briefly tells the story of the preservation of XH558, and also provides a summary of surviving complete Vulcans at the time of going to press. The technical detail, whilst not onerous, is very useful in gaining an understanding of where a lot of the key systems are, as well as what they actually do. A useful book to anyone needing to gain basic knowledge of how a Vulcan works.
