Novus (The Cresecren Chronicles Book 1) by Crystal Marcos is a book I requested and the review is voluntary. I was really drawn to this book for many reasons, one was the fact that is was a recipient of 13 HONORS! Wow! Another is the blurb, another wow. The cover too was amazing. Well, the book was just as good as it was played up to be! The characters were rich in depth, the plot complex with twists. There was suspense, intrigue, emotions (mine were everywhere!), romance, and social issues that hopefully would make one think of today too. Wonderfully planned and written! I could see this as a movie! Nicely done!

4 ½ stars

I really liked this book. The premise is wonderful and I quickly got hooked on the story, and given what a struggle I’ve had in recent months finding books I’ve enjoyed immersing myself in, that says quite a lot.

I got very invested in the characters, caring about so many. The writing is very good, the pacing is excellent, and there is a lot of suspense, and several twists, all enjoyable and well done.

I loved the chapter titles but I wish the chapters had also been numbered. I did appreciate that most of the chapters were short, making it easy to read entire chapters during the short breaks I had over the week, although I found it hard to put down the book when I had something else I needed to do.

This is the first book in a planned young adult trilogy and in general I’m tired of trilogies and yearn for standalone books. One thing I did very much appreciate about this book though is that it’s one of the best endings of the first book of a trilogy I’ve read. At the end I got more answers than questions, even though I knew a lot more to the story is coming. I was left wanting to read more but I didn’t feel tortured by the typically written cliffhanger. Book one felt sufficiently complete so that I was left satisfied by the story thus far. I wish more authors of trilogies would write their stories like this!

For a young adult book I was also pleased that at least so far the seemingly obligatory love triangle was avoided, though for a while I thought that was what was coming. I was pleasantly surprised by how the love interest part of the story was handled. By the way, so far the romantic components are PG rated. The violence is a bit less tame but still not overly upsetting.

I think this book would be great for discussion, especially as it pertains to some of the moral quandaries the characters face, and also the society as a whole.

I sometimes guessed what would happen next, but I found that enjoyable, just as I do when reading mysteries, and I was surprised just as often, and that was a lot of fun.

Some random notes: a vegan character is mentioned (I got a kick out of that given that I’m a vegan), as is a horse I found interesting, and I loved the cat character.

I know about author’s daughter so I can guess why some of the characters were named what they were. The characters’ names are original yet very believable.

Occasionally the author used all caps for words and short phrases and I sometimes got why that was done, but I found most were not needed. As a reader I was able to read for myself what was being emphasized, without the caps.

I enjoyed the author’s earlier two children’s books. They showed a tremendous amount of creativity, they were great fun to read, and I hope they get wider readership because of this book, but they were amateurish compared to this book, which is a cut above! I would have really enjoyed those first two books at 7-10 years old and, even more than as an adult, would have delighted in the adventures and fun details, so I’d still recommend them. However, this young adult book/series deserves a professional publisher, as it’s equal to or better than many similar books published traditionally. It’s excellent.

I can recommend this for age 11 or 12 and all the way up, possibly younger if the kids are really interested. This is a good book for readers who like speculative fiction, dystopian stories, older kids and teens who face special challenges, readers who like thoughtful adventure books, coming of age stories, books about friendship and (unusual) families, and futuristic earth stories, and stories that are both escapist fun and thought provoking. This book is fine for independent readers, but also for reading aloud, including group reads with families and school classes.

Full disclosure: The author is a Goodreads/online friend of mine and she gave me the book as a gift, hoping (but not requiring) that I would read it and honestly review it. I am grateful for the opportunity to read it and really loved reading it in advance of official publication.

I’m not a huge fan of dystopian as I’m more of a HEA reader but after reading this book, Marcos changed my mind. Yes, it’s that well done and it doesn’t surprise me that it’s won several awards.

In Novus, the world is very different from today and there are two distinct races: Human and Cresecren (Artificial Intelligence). Humans created Cresecren to serve them. Flash forward a bit and while the Human Race is struggling to survive, there’s growing hatred toward the Cresecren. The Humans go so far as to send them into “camps” and that is where we meet Cayden and his friends.

While gathering food and supplies, Cayden meets a beautiful human girl. He’s instantly captivated by her and her kindness towards him unfurls emotions he’s not supposed to possess. Suddenly, his world is shaken by a series of attacks and he must gather his friends together in search of a new place to call home. He takes his two new human friends on the journey as well and discovers a whole new world outside of Gavaron, a world both scary and thrilling. Cayden will have to protect those he cares for and decide if he is capable of love or die trying.

The world Marcos has created is complex, dark and full of danger and yet, there is an underlying current of hope and love that I found inspiring. Cayden is a wonderful character and I found myself caring deeply for him. Every obstacle and crisis he faced only brought me closer to him.

Beautifully written, Novus has everything you love in an epic story: a humble hero, a group of friends, a battle of good versus evil, conflicts galore and a forbidden romance. I was sucked right in and the plot moved very quickly. I gasped and was in shock a few times but that only because I didn’t see it coming (a feat for those who can pull the wool over my eyes). The ending I didn’t care for but that’s my own personal opinion. Many dystopian fans will LOVE it!

If you like moving characters, in-depth world building, intense suspense and action, this book is right up your alley!

Favorite Character:

Cayden. I instantly connected with him and there’s a sweet innocence to him that I found refreshing, especially in a dystopian novel. He’s fascinated by humans and the more he’s around humans, the more human he became. His coming to grips with what it means to truly live (not just survive) touched me.

Favorite Quote:

“Their fate was to be no one’s son or daughter, no one’s brother or sister, no one’s father or mother, no one’s kin.”

My Rating: 4.5 stars

Novus – Latin for new

Novus by Crystal Marcos is the first book in The Cresecren Chronicles, an action/adventure, dystopian/apocalyptic romance of an inhuman sort. This is a series and after finishing the first book, I can hardly wait for the next.

I was drawn to Cayden’s story from the opening chapter. He is a Cresecren, created to be used in whatever manner his human’s see fit, a slave. When Cayden has served his usefulness, he is sent to Gavaron, with other Cresecren considered rejects and rebels.

He immediately hooked up with Alecander, even though they do not have friends, sex or mates…like humans. They are infertile. Is that considered a curse or a blessing? So what did he feel for Linnaya?

When we do get to Novus, a charming town – “A place to start over, a place to begin, a clean state…” – Just when I thought they were safe, this mismatched band of friends will be put to the test.

I became complacent, lulled into a sense of comfort by Crystal Marcos’s writing. Things are not what they appear to be and there is imminent danger of a different kind.

I felt happy in those moments when the characters could celebrate and enjoy life, and deep sorrow when tragedy struck.

The descriptive writing led me to visualize the action and the world that surrounds the characters. Example: Every once in a while her copper sandals would peek out as if to say hello. How great is that?

Novus made me think of our Civil War, but with a twist. The “people” just want to be free, human and Cresecren alike. The characters have become a family, of sorts, and I am totally invested in their survival. I marveled at their willingness to put their life on the line for each other as they began to realize their feelings and the ability to care. The Cresecren are not just robots, with no feelings and desires of their own. They had more in common with humans than anyone thought…or is that what put them in so much danger, hunted down like criminals or terrorists.

I love Novus and I look forward to more Cresecren adventures with Cayden, Linnaya and the family, as they struggle to make a free life and stay alive.

I received a copy of Novus by Crystal Marcos in return for an honest and unbiased review.

"SPOILER ALERT"

“Their fate was to be no one’s son or daughter, no one’s brother or sister, no one’s father or mother, no one’s kin.”

This is the life of a Cresecren. Set in a dystopian future, life is different – humans now have Cresecren’s to do their bidding. Created beings Cresecrens live by the rules of no harm to humans, no emotional or physical contact, and you do as you are told, no questions! Cayden was born a Cresecren but due to a “sexual misconduct with a human” situation, he found himself thrust into Gavaron, where all retired, ill, or banished Cresecrens go to eke out an existence.

However, Cayden and a few of his friends discover that their world is no more; Gavaron and residents are dead and they are the hunted. Taken in by strangers through a journey of escape and discovery Cayden and his friends discover there are conspiracies everywhere. And to top it all off, Cayden finds love – with a human, Linnayah. Deadly encounters, double crosses and more keep the tight group moving, searching for escape.

Just when they think they have found a safe place, Cayden discovers their most recent savior is collecting them.

“It is the first step in suppressing what Amaury considers negative emotions.”

Cayden must decide as do the others, do they stay and enjoy life as it is or do they continue to seek their freedom and possibly die?

Action packed, futuristic dystopian world is exciting and realistic. Crystal Marcos, author, does an excellent job of creating this future world and raising moral questions within the story through Cayden, his friends and enemies.

The characters are fully developed; the plot is executed perfectly tying everything together. Marcos is a splendid storyteller with a rich and vivid vocabulary to capture the attention of her audience. She develops the underdog, Cayden, beautifully giving his voice a strong presence. Marcos captures the emotional and mental state of teenagers expertly allowing her readers to grasp those emotions and thoughts clearly.

This is a story that not only will have you thinking about it long after you have turned the last page but the characters will continue to pop into your mind. As a reader you want to rush to the end to see what happens but in the same sense you don’t want the book to end.

WordsAPlenty gives this book a 5 star rating for its clear writing style, action, character development and attention holding plot. Kudos to Crystal Marcos!

Novus is an exciting young adult dystopian novel that takes readers on a thrilling and ominous adventure that not everyone survives.

Cayden is a Cresecren teen, a "manufactured being", who's soul purpose is to serve his human family, but when an altercation transpires Cayden finds himself banned to Gavron, a Cresecren camp. Cayden prepares to spend the rest of his life in Gavron and quickly befriends Alecander, a fellow Cresecren. The pair are sent beyond the safety of the walls of Gavron to gather supplies in what is known as the Den. The Den is an unsafe place especially for Cresecrens. Alecander and Cayden are about to discover just how dangerous it is. When devastation strikes, the events that unfold alter the lives of everyone involved. It becomes difficult to determine who to trust as the sinister plan of those pulling the strings unfolds.

I am a fan of Crystal Marcos's middle grade stories and was ecstatic when she announced the release of her first young adult book. Novus is a creative masterpiece. The characters are rich and alive and the vibrant details bring the story to life. The action is gripping and easily captivating. The emotions and seemingly "human" traits that develop in these beings is enduring. When Cayden begins to experience feelings for a human teen (which is forbidden) I found myself liking his character even more. As the plot thickened and the survivors of the destruction of Gavron sought safety, I became even more engrossed in Novus and was eager to see how the group fared against their many adversities.

Novus is a real page-turner and I highly recommend picking up a copy.

Adventure-packed experience with a Cinder-like feel and a iRobot-like storyline. Marcos takes you into a dystopian world where humans have made a new being to aid in the survival of the human race. The Cresecrens, essentially a new race whose sole purpose is to serve humans. No rights, no freedom. Humans and Cresecrens live peacefully within their own boundaries, until one unexplainable event, all that changes.

From character development to plot twists, Marcos story comes together beautifully. There is never a slow or dull moment: conspiracy, forbidden love, hidden cities, battles, and more; you are sure to read this book in one sitting.

Now i personally love any fantasy type storyline for books. It just pulls you into the story and takes you to a different reality. This book doesnt cheat you of that by any means. And to top it off it hits on alot of problems or issues teens may come upon in their lives. Crazy emotions they dont know how to deal with, a love they know they shouldnt pursue but do so anyways. And add to that this amazing fantasy world Cayden gets landed into. It all makes for one wonderful novel.

A must read for any young adult or teen. Love this authors writing style. It appeals to not just teens and young adults but us fully grown adults as well.

I cant wait for more from this author.

I am a big fan of dystopian novels. When I saw this book I knew that I had to read it! I loved the world that the author built. The Cresecren's were created to serve humans. The main character was a 17 year old Cresecren named Cayden who is no longer wanted by the family he serves and ends up in a place reserved for " the maimed, elderly or defiant". I felt that his character was very well developed. I could feel his emotions. The action was very good and kept my interest.

Very interesting. The characters are well developed and numerous. Sometimes this made me feel overwhelmed but the main characters were very solid. The development of the story is very well done and at certain times chaotic which fits what's going on in this book. Would be very interested in reading the second in this series.

This book blew my mind. It was that good. When I got to the end I was desperately swiping at my phone in disbelief. I didn’t want it to be over.

Where is the next book!? I NEED the next book!

The world building done here is fantastic. I was captivated by this new world. The premise here is intriguing. I hate to say it but, this could actually happen.

The writing here is fabulous. There are no holes or confusing elements. All is thoroughly explained without info dumping. Each character is unique and relatable. Emotions are portrayed in a way that breeds empathy. You will get attached to these people.

The action is paced perfectly. There are no real lulls that make you want to flip ahead. Every word that’s written has purpose.

I found this book to be quite intriguing. I loved the idea of the cresecrens as it is unique and I haven't read anything like it. The story was steadily paced and the characters were well developed. I really connected with Cayden and his gang. I found the action scenes to be well designed and the obstacles that they encountered were believable and surprising.

Once they were out in the den, everything changed, the scenery, the characters and the challenges that they faced along the way. The fighting was well detailed and crafted nicely. The plot is full of twists that will leave you guessing. The budding forbidden romance is blooming and I am hoping it will flourish in the next books.

I look forward to reading the second book in the story and seeing where Cayden and his group take us.

Wow, what a fantastic read! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and getting to know each and every character. This is some of the best and seamless world building I have seen in quite awhile. If you enjoyed Hunger Games and/or Divergent I think you would enjoy this one as well.
I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait for the next book in the The Cresecren Chronicles series to come out!
