Two or three of the papers contained in this volume have already appeared in print; the others are new to type, though some of them may date back a half dozen years, or more. I wish they were fresher; I wish they were bet ter. Yet they contain things which seemed to me true and worth saying, when they first came to my pen; and which, now that I re-read them, seem still to be true; else, I would not say them again.
