This was on my kindle for quite some time now, left for when I need something wonderful among a number of not so wonderful books. Then I needed a freebie for my challenge and today finally I started this.

And yes, exactly as I thought, simply wonderful and uplifting. I love these author's writing. And I still have to read the valentine's story and the next chapter of MEC:) Yes, something to look forward to.

Such good writing. I realise that the themes in these stories are not to everyone's taste, there's very little sex and what there is 'fades-to-black'.... then there's that 'domestic discipline' issue ;/
However, whilst I still don't get the domestic discipline thing, I just love these stories and "The Bear Pit" is no exception.
It's always good to read a little background on some of the secondary characters in this Saga and Bear's story was/is more than a little emotional.
Not a full length novel, but hey! It's free and extremely well written. A pleasure to read.

This story focuses on Bear and Theo, especially on the origins of Bear. Theo and Bear come to the ranch to ask Dale to look into Bear's past and find out where he came from, as they know about Dale's gift for seeing things that aren't necessarily visible to others.

This was told in a dual narrative. The first narrative was the present day, where Dale and Flynn are hunting for Bear's origin. The second narrative was set in the past and centred around Bear and an incident with a polar bear. The narratives weren't linked, exactly, except through the fact it focused on Bear. I don't think that this was to the detriment of the story, but if they had been linked more concretely I think it would have added another layer of depth to the story.

I really enjoyed getting an insight into Bear and Theo, both of whom have been quite elusive throughout the rest of the series. Bear, we've seen quite a bit of because he is part of the brats, and he has been around in quite a few of the other stories, though he still managed to be elusive. To be honest, Theo was the character that I knew the least about, but after this story I feel as though I know him quite a bit better.

We also got to see more of Dale and Flynn, and I feel seeing them alone together outside the ranch really added depth to their relationship. For some reason, they seemed even more intimate in that environment. I really love their relationship.

I also really liked how sensitively the issues of slavery and racism were handled in this story. Rolf and Ranger are very good at handling issues like that, to be honest.

Really good story.

I quite liked it! It felt more like a proper continuation to the Silver Bullet, part of the main story. And we learn more about Bear!
