Lycan Instinct

Rate this book
When a murderer leaves a trail of nude, high-profile bodies across Chicago, Detective Mackenzie Lyons must decide whether to trust her instincts about a mysterious philanthropist with secrets he’ll do anything to protect.

Rafael Stone heads a team of vigilante shape-shifters tasked to stop rogue Lycans from harming people or revealing Lycan existence, even if that means breaking “human” laws.

In Lycan Instinct, Mackenzie takes a twisted journey to catch a killer that evidence indicates might be Rafael—a man who makes her pulse race and her mind question where the line is between duty and love, truth and myth.

Sexy shifters and a tough as nails detective. What more needs to be said. This is an awesome romance and a great suspense. I can't wait for more in this series.

LYCAN INSTINCT is the first book in a Shifter series from Cobblestone Press by Brandi Broughton, I will admit I was attracted to the book by the fact that there is a female detective and the shifters are people who are not on the up and up for the most part.

The book starts off with another murder, in a city the size of Chicago that may sound like par for the course so to speak, but the detail of the murder is probably the thing that stands out – it’s also the thing that makes Detective Mackenzie Lyons on edge and desperate to find out which animal is causing all this chaos.

With a partner who really is a cross between a five year old and a protective big brother, Mackenzie goes right to the top of the food chain when she learns that Rafael Stone is the head of an organisation that just do happen to deals with wolves. Little does she know that Rafael is more than just a businessman – he is the shifter alpha of not only the local wolf pack but he is trying to hold a programme together that may mean the difference between life or death when any one of these wolves goes rouge.

The first meeting goes better than either party expected and before long they are at each others throat – Literally, but beneath all the snapping and growling there is an attraction between the two.

For Rafael this attraction is a foreign entity, to be so instantly attracted to any one person and he has no problem seeing where it goes, especially when his brothers start teasing him. For Mackenzie it’s a different matter, she has worked hard to be where she is and she is not and will not cave to a “man" just because she is attracted to him and who just might be a killer.

And so the fire works begins, Rafael and his brothers wants to do the right thing by helping to catch a killer, but with so much to lose they butt head with hard headed Mackenzie who intends to find out all the secrets that the Stone men are keeping from her – because if she don’t she might just have let a killer walk away.

Sometimes all I need are book Like LYCAN INSTINCT, a book where I know the type. The type of plot, the type of heroine and the type of hero. For me sometimes that’s not a bad thing, because I end up liking the the story and look forward to the next book if it’s a series.

In this first book I liked where the author went with the story – in some ways the romance was secondary, she gave a pretty involved amount of detail about the shifters and actually showed me the inner working between Mackenzie and her colleagues at the police station.

Mackenzie was likable enough although there were a few times when I thought she was too gong-ho about her job and how she wanted people to see her. She had a few TSTL moment – but I could live with those as she also brought in some sarcastic humour as well that made me smirk a time or two.

Rafael and his brothers on the other hand were a treat and Ms Broughton really delve into the dynamics between the three brothers. They were fun to meet and in alot of ways they were classic shifter alpha male type protags. The kind you wants to slap twice yet give a hug to make it better soon after.

The murder mystery was of the kind where you didn’t have to work for it and the author made use of other things like back history and sexual tension to carry this book. I thought the whole package worked well and it was a great way of finding out more about the strengths and the weakness’ of the characters.

I really ended up enjoying LYCAN INSTINGT alot and I thought as a first book it did what it was meant to do. Introduce me to the characters, develop the background while leaving enough room for me to be suitably curious about what will come next.

A fun read.

Enjoyable read. Good mix of mystery, paranormal aspect is more of a backdrop which worked, likable believable characters, and ofcourse a bit romance and sex.

After having read a strand of kinky books recently it was good/a relief to read a book that had an actual story. Highly recommended - and everything ties up nicely at the end. My only problem is that when I tried to find other books by this author I could only find one. I really hope Brandi writes some more - she's good.

This book was good. It had a real plot, interesting characters and hot hot scenes. What more can a girl ask from an erotic romance?

I went into this book thinking I was going to get some brain candy in the form of werewolf smut. Instead, I got a mystery detective novel with romance, happy surprise!

This book was easily forgettable. Even the sex scene's weren't worth the purchase. I'd like to write a longer review, but I've already forgotten the entire plot.

I can guarantee you that there are much better paranormal romance's for you to spend your money on out there.
