Born in 1807, Robert E. Lee, son of the revolutionary war hero General Henry 'Light-Horse Harry' Lee, spent his childhood in Alexandria, Virginia, anticipating a military career. After attending the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, from which he graduated second in his class in 1829, Lee became a lieutenant in the U. S. Army.
