Low angst and fairly sweet story where the heroine ends up working for the H and helps with his motherless, equally sweet child. Can you feel my enthusiasm?
Once again, I have a feeling that my Covid-19 induced fugue from negative news overload is interfering with my enjoyment of a sweet romance. The only other thing I can think of is I have been tainted and need an angstier story, a meaner hero? A real Harlequin Presents.
NOOOOOO!
Okay, back to the review. I didn't even finish, but I suspect they end up together.
Fun times were the hero was not a jerk to the heroine but a little protective. He is amused when she tosses food on the married evil-doer who had tried to seduce our heroine with morals rather than jumping to the conclusion that she is a dyed in the wool, husband stealing hussy. Kudos to her for her morality, but she ends up being more prickly than whimsical later in the book. The H's downside is he has to be schooled on what a carelessly, neglectful dad he is to his charming daughter. No Evil Stepmother/Snow White dynamic.
Okay, I've used the word "sweet" three times already.
3 Stars ~ Shannon's a young woman who left Dublin for London when she discovered the man she thought she loved was married with children. She takes a position as secretary bookkeeper for a popular Italian restaurant, and often finds herself helping the wait staff. Every morning Kane comes in to enjoy his newspaper, a coffee and some charming banter with the red-headed waitress. When he turns up at lunch too, Shannon's interest is sparked, and then she sees that his lunch companion is the man who tried to use her, her red-headed Irish temper takes control and soon the lech is wearing his lunch and Shannon is out of a job. Learning that she has secretarial skills, Kane offers her a job working for him, not only as his secretary but as a sitter for a few hours each day for his 8 year old daughter, Eleanor. The jobs are great, except that Shannon finds herself very attracted to her new boss. Kane lost his wife in child birth, and has since worked very hard to provide a secure home for Eleanor. He's a protector at heart, and soon finds himself wanting to look after Shannon. He disapproves of the bedsit she rents and the neighbourhood, and when she refuses to move in to his home, he enlists her mother to his side. Living with Kane and Eleanor makes Shannon long for them to be a real family.
Though this is an enjoyable story with some sizzling love scenes, I found the conflict was rather mild. Kane's wife had been immature and wanted to hold on to a party lifestyle. I think Ms. Williams tried to portray Kane as controlling and disapproving of Shannon's youth and boasts of clubbing with her friends, perhaps comparing her to his dead wife. Shannon was a contradiction; one moment feisty and independent, and the next, immature and insecure. This one lacked the intensity I've come to expect from the Harlequin Presents line.
I loved a bit of drama now and then. But sometimes, I want to read something light but with enough emotions to keep me interested. This one got that in spades. Just the book I needed. Perfectly drama-free.
Drama free, no OW, an H who has been showing up at the cafe the h works out every morning the last 7 months, instant chemistry, sassy h. The H has an 8 year old daughter after he lost his wife in childbirth. The h is a red headed green eyed 5" 3' Irish girl. Some love scenes were glossed over, and I think the girl gave him a blow for her very first time ever lol. Random angst when around the same time as she realizes she is in love so obviously she runs away to Ireland where the H tracks her down and after some back and forth, asks her to marry him. They have a baby girl soon after. HEA.
This a great story. It was funny, romantic, with parts of drama and angst.
It was a bit different than the normal Harlequin but that did not affect the book at all.
All the characters were realistic and likeable. I had a hard time with the female main character, I never warmed up to her, however, the book was a great read.
Oh dear. Female was too soft on her boss who asked way more than he should have. Baby sitter required in evening and full time job. Sexual harassment in the workplace left a nasty taste .
Pet peeve well scaled: A child’s dialogue matching that of an adult is as intrusive as it is telling of the author’s lack of research to achieve believability.
Definitely a cute story to read. I loved the fact that the hero actually changed the heroines life to be positive. It was sad that the heroes first wife died in childbirth but I was super excited when we found out the heroine was pregnant.
