As this is the third book of Mo Bao Fei Bao I am reading, I can honestly say that I am indeed drawn to her books. She has a compelling manner in which she writes her characters that we are drawn to them and it feels realistic and almost feel as some of your own experiences are embedded in them. As I have mentioned in a previous book in regards to this author, the main thanks should be given to the translator, Hoju who has done an amazing job in translating every scene carefully so that we the reader understands even the smallest nuances well. This book is part of three books that shows a more realistic aspect in Chinese novels and mainly the unsung heroes of China. Here our protagonist was a doctor who was at the Peking Union Hospital caring for SARS patients and unfortunately succumbs to the disease himself. The story start well after it and deals with his life after it and we get a gory outlook of how the after effects of it continues after them. Reading this during the world pandemic happening now itself really brings out sentiments that would have stayed dormant.

I really liked the first book of the series I've read and we actually even had a cameo of Gu PingSheng in it and finally we get his story here. To my knowledge this is actually the first book but as I have read that first the comparison of this against that would naturally occurred. I honestly do not know if it is my cultural up bringing that affected my view of their romance or if I am just backward thinking and considerably a "boomer', my feelings on this romance was not completely on ship as it was with "The Healing Sunshine" couple. Yes PingSheng's and Tong Yan's romance is worth being gushed over but the teacher-student romance was not my cup of tea. As they first wanted if they waited till she began her internship at least I would not have minded. The constant sneaking behind the doors would be attractive and kinda secretively addictive to some people but for me it was not. I suspect that was the main reason that I could not completely love this book the way I did the former and in the end gave a much lower score to it. Not that it was in any way bad.

At one point I can clearly writing on my review notebook that as the couple got together fairly in the beginning of the story that they would have major break up later as it is with lots of stories but I have to admit that I was completely blindsided by the last chapter. If it was not for the epilogues I would have actually not read the last bit because despite my reluctance to like this couple completely I really did wish that they have a happy ending. Both of them led sad lives before meeting each other and they deserved the happiness that they bring each other. Thus I was extremely sad at the outcome. Nevertheless the epilogue gave us a bit of happiness.

One of the aspects that I really liked was how Tong Yan was actually modeled after an acquaintance of the author and that how at the end she told that the real life counterpart is living a happy life. That really does leave a hopeful tone in one's life.

I would not first recommend this book for people looking for a light fluffy read but rather who have the heart to bear some sadness. Despite this, the story truly does point out some pretty realistic moments and life and it would end up making you re-evaluate life and really be optimistic f life. Although it is not mentioned the story dives into aspects of life where you can truly learn from both PingSheng and Tong Yan.

This story is about minority people in community
Not something like race, gender, etc,
But people with dissability, or special need, people with broke. home family
The story itself is rather gloomy, I can understand the pain of the character.
So this is the introdution:
1. The male lead was an angel in white robes when SARS outbreak in China
2. Years Later he met with female lead as a lecturer in Faculty of Law
3. The female lead is her student.
4. They've met once when he is still a doctor
5. Female lead is from the broken home family.
6. Male lead have chronic health after SARS outbreak
7. They fall in love but their love make their couple pain

English title: Together Forever

A modern romance story about two individuals with difficult pasts coming together. It starts out as a teacher/student relationship, since the ML Gu Pingsheng is one of Tong Yan's law professors. However, they actually met for the first time 6-7 years ago at the hospital when both of their mothers were sick and still remember each other from that encounter.

Overall I thought the story was cute until the last 2 chapters, when I got very annoyed with the direction the author took the story. They got together pretty quickly and remained dedicated to each other as more issues started cropping up. Surprisingly, the student/teacher nature of their relationship didn't play a huge part in the story, which is one of the obstacles I thought they would have to overcome. All the FL got were some comments and side eye from her fellow students, but she didn't let them really bother her. Instead, most of the obstacles in their relationship came from other external issues such as her dad's gambling problem and health issues (their own as well as that of extended family members).

I was fine with the story up until the end. All along, there were small things that didn't make sense with the story, like why was he tutoring her on physics when he's a law professor or why they're hosting the 110th anniversary student gala together, but I let them slide because I knew the author was trying to create more opportunities for them to interact outside of the classroom.

I also thought that the ML's ability to read lips was way too strong. He didn't really come across as a deaf person in most scenes, since he's able to figure out what all his students are asking in the classroom even from the back rows and sing along with the FL in an impromptu song performance on the gala stage. The only caveat is that you have to look at him when you're speaking and there has to be light so he can see your lips moving, but the way he could read lips so well was too OP imo.

I also felt like I didn't fully get closure about their initial meeting at the hospital. The FL kept alluding to her broken family and how only the ML knows all the details, but it's also never clearly mentioned what the deal is with her mom. I kept waiting for more details to be revealed as it was constantly brought up, but there was nothing in the end... I was a bit frustrated by this. I also find it hard to believe that after meeting each other at the hospital once when she was only 13 years old (and I'm guessing he was around 22), they'll still remember each other so many years later, and in such a different setting where he's the professor and she his student.

Despite all of my complaints, I still enjoyed the romance and sweetness. Honestly, if it weren't for the ending, this probably would've been a 4 star book for me. But I was super frustrated by how the author chose to end the story . The ending came super abruptly; if the author wanted to throw something like this in there, the story should've been longer.

Anyways, because of the ending and some of the other small issues I had along the way, I can only say that this was a good but not great story.

3.5. The last chapters pushed a good storyline over a cliff without warning or this would be 5 stars! I thought I missed a key point in the last chapters. What would make a couple who only find true happiness with each other choose to separate to avoid their immediate family members becoming a burden to the person they married? They are two highly educated people with very little common sense based on their actions and unilateral decision making.

I was not too upset with the student/teacher relationship because they didn’t drag it out too long in the school. Also, one left the school rather quickly.

The couple also lost my interest with their handling of violence from family elders and the statement “The debt of the parents passes on to the child!” It must be a cultural difference. But, I cannot see why a young adult or their sickly grand parent should bail out life long gamblers just because they are a parent/child who shares their DNA. They just continuously provide money to enable the gambler to shirk responsibilities and live in a cycle of running up debt, then, plead for debt relief with a false promise of stopping after the next bailout. It’s like feeding money to a life long drug addict and getting surprised that the addict used the money you gave them on drugs!

I expected it to be a fluffy read about romance. Although there is enough fluff this novel made really an impression on me. A student teacher relationship is not very alluring but it was respectfully done. I'm glad that a big part of the book was about their own backgrounds. Especially with sars-covid-19 it is an eye opening to read about the other SARS. The fact that it deals with the aftermath and the impact is has/had on some life's and health is very emotional.
